Nicole is not yet a best selling thriller writer but she is working on it…

She has been lucky enough to live in such glamorous locations as London, New York, and Croydon! She currently lives in Devon with her family. For over three decades she worked in music PR and marketing within Europe and the USA before reinventing herself within the world of healthcare management. She writes mystery thrillers with a large splash of romance. Her debut novel ‘All Tomorrow’s Parties’ was released in 2015, and followed in 2016 by her second novel ‘Forbidden Colours’. Both novels have received great reviews with comments such as ‘Wow, Just Wow…’ and ‘A Real Page Turner…’
Nicole’s first short story collection ‘Soaring’ was released in April 2023.
She admits to getting bored easily and will try anything once in an attempt to alleviate that! Apart from writing and ‘doing the day job’ she can often be found enjoying new adventures. These can range from tap dancing to helicopter rides over the Black Forest. Nicole is a member of The Society of Authors.

This is a gorgeous collection of poignant and touching short stories and flash fiction. The author's imagination soars, almost like the title of the book, transporting the reader to places of enchantment, both dark and light.

The book begins with a story of hope and a dog named Tilly. It progresses through stories of people finding their own voices, the life-and-death importance of imagination, the loss of loved ones, living with ghosts, and the alternate reality of a world in lockdown.

The author proves herself again and again to be a master of inhabiting the minds of both men and women, children and adults, supernatural and earthly, past and present. The collection of stories offers a cross-section of settings and arcs and situations, but two things remain constant: humanity and love. Whether it's love of self, or a child, or a parent, or an animal, or a place, or an idea, or even the absence of love, the theme of love runs throughout the book, bringing a stirring narrative to every page.

I would recommend this lovely book to anyone who enjoys short fiction.

Stepping into a short story is akin to arriving at the theatre 15 minutes after the curtain raised on a tantalising mystery play.
When the action is already underway, there’s a lot of work to do, to place the characters, plot and storyline into the intended order.
You work hard to fill in what you’ve missed or perhaps with a short story, something that wasn’t even intended to be there.
The interpretation and creativity at play here will lead each of us to colour these stories in our own unique way.
I confess that I may have missed the point to some of them but, with only 1000 words maximum, the joy is that they can be re-read at a different time or place, in a different mood.
Nicole Fitton certainly knows how to dive straight in, to take you on a journey and make you think.
Agatha Christie Thinks I’m Grand. Is my favourite. Poignant and satisfying.

What a treat it was to dip into this book and be transported into the lives of others with such effortless ease. It takes great skill to immerse a reader in stories as short as 70 words, and yet they are as compelling and moving as their lengthier counterparts. Exploring themes of family, love, loss and everything in between, these stories stir up a range of emotions with a mix of humour and tragedy: I loved A Swan's Path <3 and I Don't Want to Dance - strikingly different yet both wholly realistic.
The beauty of short stories is that you can dip in and out as time permits, though, I must admit to always wanting to read "just one more".
As the description so aptly states, these stories portray small chunks of life, many with a poignancy that lingers on in your mind long after you've finished reading. A great balance of tone, characterisation, setting and feelings that ground you in the moment, no matter how fleeting.
Enjoy! You'll not regret diving into these pages.

I interviewed the author, you can read it here: https://sarahtinsley.com/post/on-the-...

There’s a lovely introduction to this short story collection. Nicole Fitton asks if you would like to dive into her stories when you have a snippet of time, allowing yourself to be carried off by them. And I most certainly was. ‘Soaring’ is the name of the collection, and the word she uses to describe the way she feels when she writes. The stories certainly reflect that. In each of them I was so completely carried away on the wings of story it was as though I had read a much longer book.

Varied in tone, style, subject and character, the stories give you a wonderful opportunity to lose yourself in a well-crafted story. I particularly enjoyed the dabble into the witch trials that is epxlored in ‘A Moonless Sky’ and the shiver of magical realism that comes into ‘A Swan’s Path.’ A wonderful collection of stories.

Captivating and Thought Provoking
As a successful short story writer, I often read the efforts of contemporaries. Many are not my style, either lacking in basic skills or lacking in interest. Not so with Nicole Fitton’s Soaring. This fresh anthology is a potpourri of intriguing punchy tales often told in the present tense with its intriguing intimacy (always a challenge). I was impressed with both style and content offering different slants on the art of storytelling. An impressive, easy-to-read, enjoyable collection.

This collection of short stories is perfect to read while waiting at appointments, over lunch, or anytime that you have 5-10 minutes.

Each story is unique and brings a new perspective to life with the situations that the characters find themselves in. I don't know if I could choose a favorite, but I devoured all of them in no time. The author was able to draw me in while I forgot about reality, even if for a moment.

Some of the stories do have an abstract feel, which only adds to the depth of the book.

There is something for everyone in this collection and we give it 5 paws up.

The tag line to the impressive collection sums up the stories perfectly: small chunks of life, perfectly wrapped. I thoroughly enjoyed the variety and range of the short fiction Soaring contains. I had my favourites: Thunder Song for the thought-provoking content, I Don't Want to Dance had me cringing and laughing, Jellied Eels was a poignant tale. This is clever writing and well worth dipping into or reading cover-to-cover.

Impressive

I've enjoyed dipping into Nicole Fitton's 'Soaring'.
I particularly liked 'Shoes are not my only handbag' with its good characters and clear structure. I also found 'Strawberry Fields' good as many readers could relate to someone creating a perfect father when they've never met their real father. I can see why Fitton has very impressive competition results to her name.

I was intrigued by many of the stories in this collection. They range from a few lines to three or four pages and cover everyday themes.
The first story Come Tilly Come was my favorite as it was so poignant.
Some of the stories were a tad too abstract for me personally but the imagery the author evoked was good.
