A plant-lover's journey from trauma through a therapeutic rewilding to a grounded life.
Echoing the journey of a plant itself, this is a personal exploration of rewilding and recovery. In a series of short chapters, the author explores an element of the natural cycle of dispersal, growth and bloom. By focusing on totemic plants and wildlife in each chapter, eco-psychotherapist and herbalist Brigit Anna McNeill delivers a beautiful, immersive, botanical journey to healing.
Raw, honest, beautiful. Brigit writes a magical memoir of rewilding, recovery and finding home and healing in the natural world. Everyone should read it!
This is definitely a book that I will be returning to again and again. Packed with wisdom and wonder it's a book that can change things, if you let it. A wonderful mix of nature, biography, wisdom and magic, and I would recommend this as a tonic for anyone feeling lost, lonely or disconnected from the world. Simply divine!
Words fail me when trying to describe The Wild Within. I feel that author Brigit Anna McNeill has already crafted and chosen her words with such precision and perfection in this remarkable book, that I struggle to know what to write. I do know that The Wild Within has reshaped my view of the world and my place within it.
McNeill is a trained therapist and herbalist, and uses these skills to explore how the natural cycle of dispersal, growth and bloom can inspire our recovery from trauma, stress and illness. Divided into sections related to the four seasons, each chapter highlights particular plants and what they can teach us.
This book is written tenderly, with great love and vulnerability. The Wild Within is like a marriage between the poetry of Mary Oliver and the nature writing of Robin Wall Kimmerer, showcasing scientific knowledge along with detailed observations and poetic language. This is an intensely personal book, and when I completed it I felt both changed and inspired.
This is a book I hope to read again and again in the years to come.
Such a beautiful book. Perfect balance of plant wisdom, science, folklore, personal story and psychology. A reminder of our place in the more-than-human world and the power of reciprocity. Written with tender care and soul. Will definitely be re-reading this one. I immediately bought the author's other book: Bloom and Thrive, and have become a huge fan of herbal infusions.
Set aside time to read this book slowly and let the authors words sink deep into your consciousness. She writes so descriptively and atmoshperically, honestly I haven't read a book this slowly for years. The words drip off the page and into all of your senses creating a beautiful living canvas. A very special book and one to be treated with reverence. Loved it.
I didn’t want it to end. So nourishing! Beautiful storytelling woven with deep wisdom and knowledge. I opened. I learned. Deeply moved and inspired. I Amin the midst of planting my own medicine garden!
