Sex with the Ex

Rate this book
In a story that bubbles with energy and glamour, queen of the London party scene Tyne O'Connell asks: In passion (and fashion), should we ever go back?

Lola was the hottest publicist in London for one of the city's hippest members' clubs. She had fabulous friends, an apartment to die for—and her boss, Charlie, was the sweetest man alive. But as celebrity guests enjoyed her latest cocktail party, Lola was having a dramatic epiphany as she spotted her three significant ex-boyfriends chatting over the same bottle of Dom Perignon….

Shocked to see her past objects of affection so happy without her, it dawned on Lola that maybe one of them had, after all, been her true soul mate. Had Richard—or Hamish, or Jeremy—been The One? Lola was determined to find out—no matter how loudly her friends, and an unexpectedly concerned Charlie, warned about the perils of Sex with the Ex.

"An eccentric is not trying to define themselves, they're born seeking a different way," explains Tyne O'Connell, and if anyone should know, it's her. The Mayfair-based author and socialite seems to have been torn straight from the pages of an Evelyn Waugh novel; with her cut-glass accent, perma-fixed tiara and layers of pearls.
Despite recently being diagnosed with a brain tumor, O'Connell has continued to embrace the extraordinary.”
In 2015 HRH as patron of the historic Eccentrics Club awarded her the title of “Most Eccentric British Thinker” based on her research into the 17th C when Eccentricity became the quintessential aspects of the British character. Her extraordinary life has been featured in TV documentaries & feature-spreads in Vogue UK, Elle & most UK broadsheets. Cassandra Jardine in The Daily Telegraph UK wrote: “The Impossibly glamorous Tyne O’Connell’s real life is every bit as extraordinary as her fiction” ELLE UK.
Critics have described O’Connell as, “Enid Blyton of our time” comparing her bestselling boarding-school series, Pulling Princes to “an up to date Mallory Towers”. The first four books in the series are set in a fictionalised Eton College &St Mary’s Ascot near Windsor Castle and based on her three children’s experiences at boarding school & Oxford as well as her own extraordinary life in Mayfair.

Born into an Irish Catholic family, daughter of a retired spy, her favourite chore as a child was collecting eggs from the hens for sixpence writing & reading. She was told by teachers & family she would be an author from age eight. Her first bestselling book was Sex, Lies & Litigation, pub1996 Headline to rave reviews.
Shes spent all her life in Mayfair where she brought up two husbands & three children. The area is at the heart of her ancestry & many of her books. She writes about all things Mayfair for mayfaireccentrics.com, & elsewhere. Visit her at www.tyneoconnell.com & follow her on Instagram @tyneoconnell

O'Connell was educated by elderly Flemish Sacre-Coeur nuns (born in the 1870-80's) with the expectation that she would marry a diploma or Catholic aristocrat - perfectly equipping her for a world that hadn't existed since the 1930’s. It was an unusual Victorian style upbringing & by 17, she was accomplished in Le Cordon Blue, Croquet, Semaphore, Literature, Latin, Needlepoint, Flower Arrangement, Diamond Valuation, Deportment, Millinery & Embassy Dinner Seating. After school she returned

I really liked this book because of the drama that existed between the main charcter and her life. The ex husband, the boss and the new interest. The twist at the end was suprising and really good. Also the plot in this book was really good. By the way, the ex husband was an ass. The internal conflict for this book was the main characters fight with herself. She believed she met the "one" for her but she let him go and she's fighting with herself trying to find out which one she should ebe with. The external conflict is a bit cloudy to me because I read this book a few years ago but I think it was between her and her boss. He didn't approve of her falling back into a relationship with her ex-husband.

This is the "other" book I got from that book-of-the-month club thing before I had the wisdom to cancel it.

My review from BookCrossing:
Well, I did read this, as part of Ant's Chiclet Summer, and it was so forgettable I can't even remember what I wanted to journal about it!

I just remember I didn't like the main character at all -- she was rather pathetic, and I wanted someone to smack her and tell her to stop going back to that awful man!

This classic was memorable and mesmerizing, a go to when sex with your ex is like a hex . I surely would take my chances with the possibility of perilous consequences, to be willingly seduced with the soft touch and raw naked beauty, as well as the moans and sounds of the lovemaking I remember vividly. I must in order to be blissfully tranquil and sexually fulfilled in my life, have, unforgettable, uninhibited, undeniably wondrous and ultra hot Sex with the Ex!.....

We all need to walk on the wild side occasionally. So I guess that is my excuse. I read a little bit about it, and it sounded good. And I got it cheap. By the time I reached page 50 I decided that I had better things to read, so I quit.

This book is just plain dull. It reads like a very boring telephone conversation. The other party keeps talking and talking, and never seems to say anything. And after about 5 minutes you wish they would shut the hell up.

I have forgotten most of the plot, and the names of the characters. If I had gotten far enough to know a spoiler, I think I would reveal it now.

I thought this book would be about a girl who decides to give it a go with three of her exes to see if she missed out on "The One." Instead it was about the bad choices a girl makes when she thinks one of her exes is the one. The blurb on the back of the book was very misleading. I could have enjoyed the book had I not wanted to hit the main female character over the head for keeping her head in the clouds for the majority of the book.

Why do women continue to write female characters who are powerless and stupid? Do they really think that we can feel empowered by a women who can't see and inch in front of her? I would definitely NOT recommend this book to any smart women I know.

Meh... I didn't care about Lola, the protagonist, or any of the characters. Why she would want to remarry her ex with the drug problem I didn't understand at all! I only read the book to see how the hot mess would end. Jean, Lola's pet bunny, was the highlight of the book.

Never grew to like the main character and ended up skimming the book to see if I was right about who she'd end up with. I was.

An amusing beach read with a happy ending. What more could the average woman hope for?

Silly and very concerned with being British. The best part was the pet rabbit.
