Great book that describes how to to transform your goals in a way that will let you lead more fulfilling life. I liked the distill in 8 principles and how each one of them can be applied. It's not a set rule the author describes instances when using goals is good and when they can hinder your performance. Great read for anyone who feels drained in their life due to ambitious goals and how to transform their life.
Read about this in a magazine and was intrigued that someone shares my view about how to live with goals. I haven't read this yet so I can't say for sure, but from what I understand, the author is not condoning living an aimless life. Instead, we should be flexible in our goals and the ways we achieve them so that we do not shut out unexpected/unplanned opportunities for ourselves.
Basically, this book changed my life. One paragraph spotted in a book store in far 2008 - and a 180 degrees turn in life. I would give in much, MUCH more than 5 stars if I could.
Kergesti loetav raamat.
I was wary of this book because the title and jacket blurb make it feel rather hyped. It promises a lot in the subtitle. However, I am really glad I read it and I highly recommend it. It is a short and quick read packed with helped tips and anecdotes. Shapiro's eight "secrets" make a lot of sense and are sound advice for living a happier, more fulfilled life.
I found it interesting that much of what he suggestions is familiar to me from having read, studied, and practiced with Buddhist-inspired insight meditation -- living more in the present and being less future-oriented are key aspects of meditation. However, Shapiro does not come from a meditation background at all, but rather from a business/organizational background. In the end, I think these are general concepts that are rediscovered time and time again across cultures.
My only criticism is that occasionally it felt like the anecdotes were too biased towards entrepreneurial types, not feeling that relevant to me. However, overall, there is a lot of great content and I highly recommend reading it if it sounds in the least appealing!
A dressed up, watered down application of traditional stoicism. Try the manual of Epictetus for the original and spare yourself the extra fluff Shapiro stuffs into this knockoff.
Subtitled “How to Have the Life You Want NOW,” this interesting little book reveals what the author describes as the eight secrets of goal-free living. The problem with goals, says Shapiro, is that the realization of them seldom brings happiness. We are a nation a collection of “goalaholics” (he includes a quiz at the back of the book to measure your tendency in this direction). Goals are not necessarily bad, he claims, but need to be balanced with aspirations. Goals without aspirations can lead to despair, while aspirations without goals can create aimlessness. Shapiro describes each of the eight secrets in short, readable chapters with personal experiences and anecdotes gleaned from interviewing a wide range of people across the country. Each chapter ends with some short practical advice on each of the themes. Here is an overview of his secrets: 1. Use a compass, not a map, to wander about and experiment with new ways to fulfill your aspirations. 2. Trust that you are never lost, just somewhere to move on from and discover new things. 3. Remember that opportunity knocks often but very softly at times. Pursuing goals can cause you to miss these subtle opportunities. 4. Want what you have now, appreciating your life as it is at present. 5. Seek out adventure, seeing this one-time adventure of life as a time to foster incredible discoveries. 6. Become a people magnet, continually seeking, building and nurturing relationships and camaraderie. 7. Embrace your limits, learning to be at peace with your weaknesses as well as your strengths. 8. Remain detached, focusing more on the present and committing to the future without becoming consumed with what might happen. This fascinating little book closes with some practical advice on “Setting Your Compass” as well as recounting one person’s journey out of “goalaholism” and a collection of FAQ’s on the concept of Goal-Free Living.
WHAT THIS BOOK IS ABOUT: 1) A different and unique, to me, way of achieving things in life. 2) It may seem to some as if Shapiro is advocating no goals and nothing to strive for, but, that is not what he is doing at all. 3) Shapiro advocates living life in "themes" instead of goals. For instance, my New Year Resolutions were going to be to jog 5 minutes 4 times a week, play tennis twice a week, etc. Very cut and dry goals for improving my health. After all, most of us have been taught now to set specific, observable goals that can be verified. 4) Shapiro's motto is to go "in the general direction" of the goaland see where life takes you. Hence, I chanced my New Year's Resolution to a motto of "HEALTH". This now encompasses a healthy body, mind, spirituality, attitudes, bank account, business, relationships etc. It even includes a healthy world, healthy economy, health of my friends, neighbors, fellow citizens, etc. 5) This has allowed me to think more expansively and less specifically about the same goal. I am excited to see how my life changes by doing this. 6) This is the gist and backbone of the book. If you read it, he will give scenarios and examples of how having themes instead goals works and benefits us. But if this is all the info you need to say, hey, I don't need to read this book now, then that's cool too!
First of all, goal-free living isn't some free-for-all, blow with the wind kind of living. What Stephen advocates is to give up being attached to goals many o us make in life and being present to what actually is around us, in front of us and being open to new experiences - you are where you are - I think it's safe to call it "intentional living" The book is a call to expand your life is a very zen way without having to be a spiritual guru.
From my own experience, I feel his 8 secrets will make great training wheels for anyone who is new to this way of life. I can't give this book 5 stars because I'd like to see a more robust online platform - it is currently just a simple questionnaire. What I would love to see in the 2nd edition of this book is a platform that begins to build scaffolding to help you live a goal-free life - this is not something that happens overnight. A futuristic version of the platform might even help you coordinate major aspects of your life. Now to be fair, if an online platform doesn't sound useful to you, you may very well find this a 5-star book, especially if being "goal-free" sounds like a big jump for you and it inspires you to make the jump - if so, the book will be priceless :)
The book is all about how to achieve incredible success in life by giving up on goals. And if you don't experience incredible success, at least you'll be happy (but possibly poor, which is largely ignored). I thought the idea behind the book was great, but the prose dragged a lot in the beginning. It got better, especially when the people the author encountered on his cross country trip were featured. Plus towards the end, the book was much more inspirational and motivational in contrast to the beginning that sounded a lot like another management consulting book. Worth a read if it comes your way.
While setting goals can be beneficial, allowing them to control your life may lead to negative outcomes. Goal-Free Living teaches you to explore new paths and achieve a more fulfilling and successful life today!
Good book. Being the goal-a-holic that I am, I was initially skeptical, but after reading the book, I can understand where he is coming from. Just need to relax a little and live life a little fuller!
