A wind whips through the trees, carrying with it the call of Pandora’s Box. It will choose one victim, as it does every year, and beckon its quarry to open it. He will have one year to find the box. Or die. Twenty-year-old Fox is heir to the House of Lords, a group dedicated to protecting Pandora’s Box from the chosen who seek to open it. When the new chosen kidnaps her father, Fox rushes to find him. Joined by her best friend Onyx and the mysterious Falcon, her journey leads her to a strange silver-haired man, the ethereal Fae, and what may be her first, and only, chance at love. Fox ultimately learns she must fulfill her long-awaited destiny sooner than planned.
When I first saw the cover I knew I was going to read it and I was actually trying to win it from Librarything, but Parrisha was kind enough to give away 5 free copies to those who asked and so I received one. I'm very happy I did because I really enjoyed it, not to mention the cover is gorgeous! I wish I had a paperback copy just so I could look at it in person.
Anyway, cover love aside let me talk about the actual story. The first thing about the summary that drew me in was the promise of mythology being incorporated, which if you don't know by now I am a fan of. Which it does but in a more obscure way. The world itself isn't terribly fleshed out so I never really knew if they were on Earth or someplace entirely different (I treated it as a different place). There are several races to get a feel for; the Blessed, the Fae, and humans. In all honestly I wasn't quite sure what the Blessed were exactly or what their origins were. They seem like Fae but it is stated they are not, and from their name I also assume they are simply humans who are 'blessed' with abilities. That aside I really liked the abilities that a few of the Blessed showed off. The Fae were really interesting and I liked their culture. The Greek mythology involved is basically untouched save for a few major things that seem like they will be fully explained more in a the next book. The fight scenes leave a little to be desired but they aren't terrible either. The main characters are really enjoyable and very relate-able. Fox is strong but at the same time she's also very much a venerable person, and I found that I could relate to her protective barrier. I was sure how I felt about Falcon most of the time but I knew I felt his frustration and I felt bad for him, and Onyx is extremely likable from the beginning. There is significant character development and the personal stories of each character is very well done. The story overall was wonderful and unpredictable, and the ending definitely has me wanting more. I really like when a book throws me off and I don't feel like I know what's going to happen, and that's exactly what this book does. I was surprised at how things turned out and I'm interested in knowing where they will go.
The writing is fluid and works the plot perfectly, and I don't think I spotted any formatting issues or errors throughout either. This being Martelly's first book I'd definitely have to congratulate her on a job well done. Despite the things I mentioned that sound negative I do believe that this is a book worth reading, and the fact that the plot is a original and enjoyable earns it extra points with me. I do recommend this to anyone who enjoys fantasy novels, it's worth the money.
The main character Fox, was one that I felt I could understand. She is a loner not by choice but because those in her town are afraid of her. Fox is a very likable lead, she's strong yet not closed off even though others fear her, she still goes out of her way to help those that need her assistance. Fox as the heir to the House of Lords is a warrior, one of the best. I enjoyed learning about Fox's back story which made me like her even more. There are parts of Fox's past that are sad yet most of her childhood was filled with happy memories of her and her father.
They guys that accompany Fox on her journey are quite different. Onyx is very open and outgoing. He's always joking and keeping things light even though the situation they are is dangerous. Falcon on the other hand seems very closed off, quiet and angry. He doesn't want to interact with either Fox or Onyx. Falcon wants to get the job finished and be done and doesn't feel as though opening up and talking is a requirement for this job.
I was really intrigued by the world that Parrisha Martelly created in Fox. We learn more about each character as the story progresses. Such as why they are they way they are.I really like it when a book surprises me with the twists and turns that it takes. I did have a few issues with this book. First, I wasn't sure when this book takes place. There is no mention of time which was a little confusing. My other issue was that it was too short. I would have liked it to be longer, only because I really enjoyed the story that I was reading. My issue with its length had nothing to do with the development of the novel.
Overall I really liked this novel and its story line. The characters were quite entertaining and I am really looking forward to learning more about this world.
Fox, Book 1 of the Vendetta Series, is the debut novel of Parrisha Martelly.
As a fan of Greek mythology, I loved the premise to Fox. In order to avoid spoilers, I'll just say that Pandora's Box plays a large role in the series, which is pretty clear from the product description.
Here's what I loved about the story: ~It had a great plot. ~The author's writing style is impressive, especially considering that this is her debut novel. ~The characters seemed to be fleshed out very well. ~There was enough mystery in it to keep me interested. ~The story itself was pretty unpredictable. There were plenty of turns that I had not expected. ~The characters, especially Fox, was very likeable. I felt that I could relate to them. ~The Chosen and the Fae had interesting cultures. ~As far as I could see, there were no technical issues with the e-book. The formatting was done well, and I never saw a typo.
Here's what I did not like about the story: ~The fight scenes were not all that impressive, but they were not bad either. ~By the end of it, I was still trying to figure out what the Chosen were and what they were capable of. ~The world was not fleshed out too well. After reading it, I honestly could not tell what country it took place in. Only the ties to Greek Mythology bring me to the conclusion that the book takes place on Earth.
Taking everything into consideration, I'd give the story a rating of 4.5 out of 5.
Since Goodreads doesn't allow half stars, I rounded it up to five. What can I say? It was a great read and I look forward to the author's future installments in The Vendetta Series and beyond.
That cover is absolutely and completely gorgeous! Just gorgeous. I had to begin by saying that.
Now, this is a high fantasy novel with the adventure type of scenario. This has been my reading phunk niche for a while now, but I think it's reached the height of no-modjo. I just couldn't get into it at all. I just couldn't. I read something like half of the book, trying my best to become interested in the story. I'm sorry, it didn't happen for me.
The writing style is third person narrative with that type of voice you commonly find in high fantasy. And I'm not responding to it anymore for some reason. It's a well written book, with interesting plot and nice characters, but I'm just not feeling that sort of read.
So don't go by my phunk no-modjo mood, if you like high fantasy narratives and fantastic worlds like that give it a shot, it's a well done book. It just isn't the read for me...
I received this book through the Goodreads First Reads program. Since this is not the type of book I usually read, I was a bit apprehensive, but this was quickly replaced by interest. The story drew me in quickly, and was very impressed by this young author. The book is the first in a series, and I will be watching to see when future volumes are published.
While you can tell that the author is young, this is a very solid first novel. The plot is intriguing and ends with enough mystery to make you want to read the next in the series. The characters need fleshed out a bit more, all of the dialogue tends to sound the same, but overall a very good book. 3.5/5.
I really enjoyed this book! Well written, interesting characters & plot and a bit of a cliffhanger/whodunit ending to keep the reader on their toes for the next installment. I will definitely be reading the sequel.
This book was okay. Nothing exceptional. It was not boring but also not that exciting. The story was predictable. It gave me a dèja vu experience, like I've read this before. I do hope it gets better as the series progresses.
