Sometimes It's Fate

Rate this book
Jason McCarthy is gay. He’s also a police officer living in a small-minded northern New Brunswick town where being gay could spell the end of his career. When an impending snowstorm threatens to strand his best friend and policing partner, David, Jason offers up his spare room for the night--a move that reveals Jason’s secret, and changes their friendship and lives forever.

David Richard isn’t gay--at least he doesn’t think he is. He knows he loves his best friend, and he admits to feelings that had started after a tragic accident almost a year before. When David acts on these feelings, it doesn’t go well, leaving both men alone and hurt. Jason, however, doesn’t think twice about stepping in and rescuing David’s children when their mother abandons them. The move brings David and Jason back together, but Jason’s past rears its ugly head and they both have to make difficult decisions that are sometimes best left up to fate.

I really, really liked this story...a lot. It was so real life, so relatable, so believable in most aspects. Jason and David are RCMP officers and now I want to go to Canada and check these hotties out.

David is a divorced father with 3 small kids. Jason is his partner at work. David is straight and Jason is openly gay with friends and family but not at work. David finds himself attracted to and protective of Jason. He doesn't understand it but he accepts it. This is obviously a "gay for you" story because David still gets a little distracted by and attracted to women.

I won't go into details about how they come together but i will say their first time having sex is a scorcher...wow...that scene was worth the price of the book alone.

As much as i liked this story there were some loose ends and "say whats?" that made me take a star away. The first was Davids ex wife Carol and her illness...if she was bad enough to forget she had small children, would leave them alone to go on dates and disappear for a weekend...how come she was allowed to keep them? And Jason volunteering to go Afganistan...why bring that up if it didn't happen in the story and had zero bearing on anything in the story...he didn't tell David about it and he never went....so what was that about? Also, David was just a little too easy going when the "scare" came up.

Besides all that....it really is a great story and i am so glad i read it.

Chris recommended this one. It's two mounties in New Brunswick. David is 34, divorced with three small children and best friends with his partner Jason. One day he inadvertently finds out Jason is gay. Jason has hidden it for obvious reasons. Suddenly David clues in to his attraction to Jason and they start an affair. Things are going well until Jason's fuck-buddy shows up HIV positive and he and Jason didn't use condoms. However this was not the kind of drama where David freaks out, he's there for Jason 100%, doesn't care and gradually they start to come out to people, although it seems everyone already knew they were together or should have been, including David's ex. So while she had issues, him being with Jason wasn't one of them. So there were some nice twists, no evil homophobic ex, not gay bashings, but there were also stories that showed it wasn't gaytopia in general. I quite enjoyed the fact that they were best friends and how they interacted and were there for each other 100%. The sex was hot and sometimes funny as Jason initiated David into gay sex, although both men appeared to be well over averagely endowed. *slight eyeroll* LOL Still, I quite enjoyed it. There is one thing that Jason volunteers for at work that I can see being a major hurdle for them as a couple, but nothing was mentioned of it, so I'm wondering if there is meant to be a sequel, since if I was living with someone and they volunteered for that without even discussing it I'd be pissed.

Even though at times it seemed slow, and there were quite a few editing errors with missing words/letters I really enjoyed reading this book. The romance between Jason and David was nicely written and believable and their characters were well drawn. Though I admit at times David seemed a bit too perfect as he seemed to handle being attracted to Jason (where before he thought himself straight) and the HIV scare almost too easily. Than again that is part of the reason why I enjoyed the book so much. There was no drama inside the relationship. Sure, they had a lot to deal with and to get through, but they did it together as a couple with none of that every man for himself mentality so many fictional characters seemed prone to.
Overall a very good story with characters I wouldn't mind seeing again. Especially considering there are some loose ends left.
Also, wouldn't mind seeing how Craig is dealing with things. Maybe even gets his own happy end.

This was an enjoyable story that was fairly predictible. It never actually gets too deep or too heavy, despite some aspects of the storyline where you would expect that. Everything seems to just fall into place for Jason and David, and I'm hoping the next book shakes things up a bit.

Sometimes It's Fate really sets itself apart from many of the m/m books on the market today through it's extremely realistic progression of friends to lovers within the gay for you subgenre along with the emotional affects of a possible HIV diagnosis on a committed relationship. Each emotion tugged the reader further into the story and you soon became fully enmeshed in the lives of new couple Jason and David.

Jason's always known he was gay and while he doesn't flaunt it he doesn't make it public knowledge for fear of having to deal with homophobia in a small town. He and David have been extremely close for years with David helping him through a particularly emotional time. David's divorced with kids though and is greatly confused about the increasingly intense romantic feelings he's having when around Jason. Their progression of friends to lovers felt realistic with its slow transition that allowed for a lot of steamy sexual tension that ultimately resulted in an extremely satisfying first time scene that was both sweet and sexy. David's hesitation was gone quite quickly and their transition to outright couple seemed to happen before you could blink. The sexual interludes started out slowly building in intensity and were nicely spaced throughout the story with Jason definitely being the more dominant for obvious reasons. Jason was also the more emotional of the two and therefore I felt a deeper understanding of his character as opposed to the more subdued David.

Important issues like homophobia and the HIV virus were brought to the forefront of this story and handled in a mature, not overly preachy way. While I felt the HIV issue was handled in a sensitive and nicely incorporated manner, the fears of homophobia which were mentioned often early on, seemed to be quickly swept under the rug with everyone seeming to easily accept this new relationship. Another issue casually mentioned was postpartum depression, which was the catalyst for Jason and David getting together, but was resolved before it really even started. It's purpose was solely as a plot device which is a shame since the author dealt with the other serious issues rather well.

As this is the first book in a series, we're introduced to many secondary characters with one leaving a particularly strong impression. The former hard partying, recently diagnosed with HIV character of Craig changed dramatically from first meeting to last and I'd be intrigued to see how a relationship would progress for him considering his HIV status. With how well Ms. Stone handled things here, I have no doubt that a full-length story for Craig would be as sensitively written. No matter whose story is told next I look forward to revisiting the Great White North and am eagerly anticipating this author's next release.

This review was originally written for The Romance Reviews and can also be found there.

When you start reading this one, I suggest you read the Author's Notes at the beginning. They clarify some things in the book and for me they even gave a whole new feel to the book. Maybe I could say – a dose of reality.

SOMETIMES IT'S FATE is a story about Jason and David, two police officers living in a northern New Brunswick town. Their friendship has been growing stronger for years and their job connection as partners only solidified it.

We get introduced into the story just as David finds out Jason is gay and surprisingly enough hasn't got any issues with it. Instead, gradually, their friendship turns into something more and is just as solid as their friendship.

Both men were fun characters to read about. They were strong and down to earth with a big sense of responsibility. Their relationship matched their personalities and no conflict to come between them just made everything easier. What I liked, and I'm sure a lot of other people will too, was the genuine attention to detail when it came to police work and little details like jokes and sets of rules. It felt like the story was based on men the author knows and I, for one, liked that.

More realistic rating of this book would be somewhere between three and four, a rating I cannot give, but I thought the book was nice enough to kind of smudge that and I just gave it four. Some readers will have a problem with the easy way things happened. The no-conflict thing is truly that and the ‘small-minded' comment I read in the blurb cannot apply to this story. No one had issues with the two men being together and they found support on every corner. It is unrealistic, but it was written is such a way that I couldn't genuinely mind.

Children in an m/m romance always make me smile and it is something I like to read about. David has three and all of them were a joy, but what got to me was just how great Jason was with them. They felt like a family and that you just don't see very often.

The plot moved fast, giving away just enough details about the couple to not feel lost but not enough to make you all sated and satisfied. But on a happier note, there is a sequel, one of two actually, scheduled for release next year and I am hoping more will be said about the men and their happily ever after.

Until then, this author will give you a taste of real men in real everyday situations, where her unique writing style gives a book enough of the special to make it stand out.

You know what I absolutely loved about this story and most M/M that I read? It has a way of pulling your heart strings and making you so emotionally invested with the characters that you are hanging on every word.

Jason is a cop in a town where if he comes out as being gay, there could be horrible consequences. When a snowstorm blows into town, Jason offers his partner, David, a man who he is secretly jonesing for in every way, his spare room when he can't get back home. Everything changes from that point. Jason is on the phone cancelling his plans with his on again off again lover, Craig, when David came into his apartment to overhear his conversation. Jason is panicked when he finds out that David knows his secret. He is even more worried that David knows he has a thing for him. He doesn't want to lose his partner and best friend.

David is shocked to find out that Jason is gay. Never once had he mentioned this and he was supposed to be his best friend. After Jason clearly leaves a little panicked, he knows that he is instantly ok with it. He is a little unsure of what to do with the feelings that are pushed to the forefront after he overhears the part of Jason's conversation about him. He knows that he loves his best friend and would do anything for him but could there possibly be more?

Jason and David were such great characters. I liked that David is a divorced parent. It throws a little something extra into the book that shows you how great of a parent David is and how much Jason loves David's kids like his own. I love that it also added the challenge of having to tell the kids about their situation when things progress. It made an all together wonderful, emotional story that much better and well rounded. And I can definitely say that when the next in the series comes out, I will be buying it that day.

I really, really liked this book, but I have to tell you that I was completely emotionally spent at the end. This author is incredibly good at painting a picture with her words, I felt almost voyeuristic while reading. It's also one of those novels that once I started it I was compelled to finish it, I HAD to know what was going to happen next in the lives of Jason and David.

Jason and David are partners at work. David is a divorced father of three and Jason is an in the closet gay man who has been in love with David for years. When David overhears a conversation that Jason is having and realizes Jason is gay he starts to reevaluate the feelings he has for him. But a relationship between the two men won't be easy, there is an ex-wife, homophobic co-workers, children and a possibly devastating health condition that the two would have to deal with. They have to decide if their love is strong enough to even try.

This story really runs the gamut of emotions and feelings, from laughter and tears to some really beautiful love scenes between the men. Ms. Stone's storytelling will draw you in and make you feel a part of their lives. It is one of the most realistic feeling books that I have read in quite a while.

There are a few editing problems, a couple of phrases that are very repetitive and a few threads that were left open and felt out of place because they were not addressed. I am hoping theses things will be addressed in the following books in the series.

If you are looking for a beautiful, realistic story about real life situations and the feeling that sometimes fate gets it right, then Sometimes it's Fate is one that you don't want to miss.

After finishing Sometimes It’s Fate, written by Angela Stone, I am left somewhat perplexed. Not perplexed about the book itself, which was very enjoyable, more so about a pivotal juncture I have reached in my own life upon reflecting on the content of this book! If you have not had the opportunity of reading a book written about male/male relations, I highly suggest that Sometimes It’s Fate be your first.

Angela’s classy prose tells the love story of Dave and Jason. Both men are employed in a traditionally viewed as macho/manly job, but macho men can’t be gay, right? (excluding the Village People, who in my opinion happen to rock! – LOL – did I just date myself?) Simply put, this is a beautiful love story about David and Jason, two officers of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. This IS NOT just a story about two gay guys; instead, it is a tale about two souls that are in love and they just happen to both be male. Jason knows he is gay and is openly “out” to his family, but he has chosen to keep it on the down-low when it comes to work. He has secretly loved his partner, David, since he first hired on at their detachment. For David, a father of three that has been divorced from his wife for a few years, the struggle comes in understanding how it’s possible to love his partner, Jason, because he knows he is not gay – it just feels right to love Jason. Through this journey, Jason helps David realize that anything is possible and that Sometimes It’s Fate. I am anxiously awaiting her next book!

Sometimes It’s Fate is a wonderful treasure among M/M erotic stories. It is a story about ‘real’ people in actual life issues. Yes, it’s a HEA story (why read one that’s not? Seriously.) but there are some very hard hitting issues that these two men have to deal with, abandonment of children, coming out to self much less others, possible HIV issues (see Interview for excerpt that references this), etc.

The character development was so well done that I feel like I know Jason, David, and Craig. Angela delves into who the characters are, their past, their hopes, dreams, fears, and more while making them strong, independent, and loving. Too often one of the two characters in the relationship is more like support than an actual partner but that is not the case here. Yes, there are things to deal with, things to overcome but they are both loving, yummy men!

There are a couple of loose ends that I’m hoping will come up / be dealt with in future books (I’d be pissed if I was David, just sayin’). I’m floored that this is a debut novel, as she writes like she’s been at it for years and as noted on her site, she has Dysgraphia which makes her writing skills that much more amazing. I highly recommend Sometimes It’s Fate to any that love a great M/M romance! I can’t wait for the next book, Boots On The Ground, coming out July 2012.

I read Angela S Stone’s second book in this series first, BOOTS ON THE GROUND, and it was an epic read, a highly recommended book. I was so impressed I asked Ms Stone for the first book in the series, SOMETIMES IT’S FATE to get to know the back story of one of Boots’s MCs. SOMETIMES IT’S FATE is not only the first book in the series, it is Ms Stone’s debut novel. Her growth as a writer is starkly apparent. While the second book is outstanding the first one is “merely” very good. Is that a put down? Absolutely not! The fact that she built on her experience writing Fate to come up with Boots, though, is an indicator of what an exceptionally talented writer Ms Stone is.

I didn't like either of the main characters and it seemed like the author just kept adding every possible issue you can think of for a gay couple. It was not believable at all and I had a hard time finishing it ..

Spoiler alert -

Also what happened to Jason signing up to go to afghanistan, she had a chapter about him wanting to go and signing up for the police volunteer thing and nothing ever happened, it was never mentioned again, just another example of the author trying to just add in as much drama as she could

3.5 stars. I really liked the characters & the story. The writing style was a little strange. Seemed rushed in places & went off on tangents in others. Some things didn't completely make sense. But overall I thought it was a relatable & steamy little story.

This is a nicely written story about friends to lovers. David, divorced with 3 children, and Jason, his police partner, realise that they have feelings for each other. The story centres around David, who is not gay, acknowledging his growing feelings for Jason. There are some family dramas, issues with David's ex-wife, problems with one of Jason's buddies and a bit of police action. The sex scenes are well written.
Some of the scenes did not seem entirely required for the plot and some things were mentioned but not further addressed but on the whole this is not too distracting.

Good m/m romance about two members of the RCMP (Mounties) whose friendship slowly develops into something else. I think this book had the potential to be much, much better than it was - better editing would have helped tighten it up and would have resolved problems with punctuation and the like.
