The premise of this liberating book is that the single experience can be much more than a way station between partners; it is rather, a rewarding and desirable alternative lifestyle. The author's purpose is to show single adults in a couples-oriented culture how to overcome the problems and fulfill their promise of living in the first person singular.
I went through a period in my early 30's, of reading self-help books. In the process I discovered there is small period of time in the early to mid-70s, when self-help books were no longer filled with Hippie lingo, and New Age cliches were not yet in vogue. The best book I ever read on meditation comes from this period as well. Without the hip lingo, what is left are short, concise and eminently practical guides on often nebulous subjects. FIRST PERSON SINGULAR is the most helpful book I ever encountered on the topic. A no-nonsense guide to re-framing your self image with a practical daily/weekly/monthly schedule on learning to do for yourself and increase your self-sufficiency. Also addresses the process of learning to like yourself and others by treating yourself better, becoming a better friend; all ultimately leading to a better intimate relationship - when you've re-established your own stability. Perhaps I found the right book at the right time, or maybe this one is sadly overlooked. I suspect there have been endless books written since that might give a reader a sense of being caught up in a current craze for some new title; but few that have improved on the rock solid theories and program set forth in FIRST PERSON SINGULAR.
