Suzy Kline, nee Weaver, was an elementary school teacher for 25 years and most of her books are based on the experiences she had while teaching. Suzy and Rufus got married and had two daughters named Jennifer and Emily. Now, more than 24 years after writing her first book, Suzy has traveled all over the United States helping children learn how to enjoy reading and writing.
I liked this book because I like salamanders. I like salamanders because they are amphibians and I like amphibians. I also liked this book because I lllllllllllloooooooooooooooovvvvvvvveeeeee surprises!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:). the surprise was the fire alarm going of without a fire.
Doug, the narrator of the Horrible Harry series, tells about one of their classmates in room 2B. It is about Song Lee, the girl from Korea. Doug shares with the reader of Song Lee's shyness, loyalty to her friends, and all the different pets that she has, and the differences of lifestyles between Song Lee, and her classmates.
I love Song Lee; I like that she has her own little spin-off series in the Horrible Harry franchise.
I think in this book about Song Lee, we learned a lot about Song Lee: She's painfully shy, loves her culture, adores animals of all kinds, even the "horrible" ones, she is sweet and kind and a great friend.
The one thing I did not like, and continue to dislike is Mary and how she treats people. She didn't get her way when Harry had the opportunity to appear on TV in the art exhibit, and she destroyed his art piece; and now with Song Lee, because she didn't want to tell Mary the secret about Harry, she violently put clay in her hair? Song Lee didn't tattle on Mary, but I feel like she should have. That's just enabling her poor behaviour.
I don't like Mary.
I think the last line in the book is the best thing:
"Song Lee. Most of the time, she follows the rules. But when she doesn’t, it’s because she follows her heart."
Song Lee in Room 2B, I think, is one of my favourites in this series.
I don't know why, but it never occurred to me that this series would still be told from Doug's POV, just focused on Song Lee instead of Harry. This was a cute collection of stories, though I stand firm that something is fundamentally wrong with Mary psychologically.
It was good. Better for yougner readers. So I wouldn't recommend this for older readers, unless they want super light reading. For younger readers, who are starting to read chapter books, enjoy!
This book is a realistic fiction and can be geared towards 1st-2nd grade, depending on their reading level. Song Lee in Room 2B is about Song Lee (of course) and her classmates in their interesting days of class. Song Lee is an extremely shy girl who is from Korea and has difficulty speaking English. Certain scenarios in the book could be teachable moments such as classroom management. The students were very rowdy in their classroom with name calling, screaming, and in one scenario, one of the girls throwing clay in Song Lee's hair. The students could be asked what we shouldn't do in the classroom that happened in the book. Another teachable moment could be to research Korea since there is a little snippet in the book of Song Lee presenting her essay of her home country. I personally did not like this book, I found it confusing at first - I thought that Song Lee was the narrator but in fact it was another student whom I could not find out which student until close to the end. However, it is a good transitional/early reader book.
I thought at first that it was neat that this book had a child from Korea. I was disappointed that Kline wrote Song Lee with stereotypical grammar of an Asian person still learning English. I know that this is an easy reading/transitional book for children starting on chapter books but I felt like each chapter was only slightly related to the previous one. It wasn't a horrible book but it wasn't great either. I wouldn't purposely put it into my library as I feel there are much better books at this reading level.
"Before students read Song Lee in Room 2B, talk to them about the book. Ask students if they have read any of the other books by Suzy Kline about Room 2B. Some of those books feature Song Lee while others feature the mischievous Harry. Ask students what they expect the book to be about, based on their experience with the characters in other books. Explain to students that Song Lee is very afraid of public speaking. Ask them if they have similar fears, and discuss some ways to overcome them."
This was a sweet book about the challenges and fun of being an eight-year-old. The main character, Song Lee, is shy and sweet, but has a good sense of humor and a big heart. The story is narrated by a boy named Doug, so this is a great book for boys and girls to relate too.
My little one and I really enjoyed reading this book; it had some great pictures. I would recommend this to children 8-12.
when doug talks about the mold on the corner of the fish tank and the coral are dying room 2B has to give there fish away so song lee brings a salamander to school for a pet when the fire alarm goes off song lee rescues her pet while room 2B are wondering where song lee is.
