From Oprah's Book Club. Life in impoverished and prejudiced rural Mississippi in the 1950s.
Fatherless young white teen named Valuable is befriended by poor black man, Evan Grade, as they both search for love and connection in their small world. Thought provoking. Tragic ending.

Rich exploration of rural white and black culture in the 1950s deep south. Haynes characters are one of a kind and fully realized. While racism, homophobia and poverty are pervasive, the characters live rich lives. An enjoyable read.

Good narrative, interesting characters, laugh-out-loud funny at moments. Heads up that there is offensive language (n-word and r-word).
