Fans of Zane's APF sorority stories, which have appeared in earlier collections including The Sex Chronicles: Shattering the Myth, wanted more, and Zane has given it to them. Here is a book-length story about the sexy escapades of APF, a sorority dedicated to sexual freedom and the fulfillment of its members. Their on-campus antics are off the hook, and Zane, as ever, turns the heat up so high the pages are practically sizzling. Mary Ann is the daughter of a chicken farmer from the Midwest. She has never been more than fifty miles from home and has led a sheltered life. By the time she goes off to college in Washington, DC, she has been intimate with only one man--her high school sweetheart. The resident manager of Mary Ann's dormitory, Patricia, befriends the country bumpkin. She finds Mary Ann amusing, but also senses something intriguing about her, hidden under the surface. After Mary Ann becomes smitten with Trevor, the campus playboy, Patricia is determined to show Mary Ann how not to be a victim, but rather how to outdo the players and heartbreakers. She indoctrinates Mary Ann into the ranks of the sexiest secret society ever: the sisters of APF.

This had a really good premise but there was one glaring issue that I could not get over
TW: cheating, serial cheating, strong sexual content
So let's just talk about how I came to acquire this book. I recently got Audible Escape and I was just scrolling through Black romances and I came across this book. First, the title made me laugh out loud. I knew that Zane had a reputation for being wild so it didn't really surprise me. I was definitely invested in reading a book where the women were aiming to break the boundaries often associated with what a woman should/shouldn't do concerning sex. This was supposed to be a book all about sexual liberation; HOWEVER, what I got was 288 pages of individuals attempting to justify serial cheating.
I have read books that have cheating in them. I'm not a huge fan of that trope because cheating is a super harmful thing that can not only ruin a relationship, but also the mental and emotional health of those involved. When I came across the first instance of cheating I grimaced, but I kept going. Then there was an incident where a character gets cheated on so they cheat in retaliation. THEN we have characters in committed relationships who make the decision to cheat because they need to fulfill their sexual desires. THEN we have characters that cheat because "if men do it why can't we cheat as well." It was so cyclical and sent an absolutely horrible message. I know that cheating happens and that people make mistakes and how couples handle infidelity varies from couple to couple; HOWEVER, I don't ever want to promote the message that if your partner cheats you should cheat or that fulfilling sexual desires is justification to cheat. If a couple agrees that having multiple partners within the confines of their relationship is appropriate then that's different. And honestly I almost wish she would have gone with that idea instead. Willingly and knowingly getting into relationships only to cheat a few days later and to do it serially is NOT OKAY. Then there was this excuse that if a man can't fulfill your needs sexually you should stay with him for other reasons, but cheat on him so you're satisfied. WHAT?!? That's what communication is for. And Zane almost covered the importance of communication until she let a character tell her partner what would satisfy her sexually. He followed through. She was satisfied. AND SHE STILL MADE THE DECISION TO CHEAT ON HIM. I just couldn't get past this part of the book. It completely overshadowed the conversations about sexual liberation and sexual gratification for women. I love having those conversations because of the double standards that women are faced with concerning sex. But this wasn't it. I almost don't want to read anything else by Zane because if cheating is a common theme that occurs in these books they won't be for me.
I don't know if there really was a lot of character development. The main character does become more confident in herself and her sexuality, but she changes from this kind and compassionate person to someone who will hurt people for her own sexual gratification. And this book is told in three different perspectives and I didn't really like ANY OF THE VOICES. Honestly, this was just a rough book. The writing was okay, but nothing spectacular. Zane took like the first 15 minutes of the book to address her fans and haters which was completely unnecessary. Honestly, it was a hot mess and the only reason why I didn't give 1 star is because I did enjoy the conversations related to sexual liberation.
I can't recommend this book, but if you decide to pick it up please be weary for the amount of cheating that does occur.
I've read erotic romances aplenty. And I'll be the first to admit I've gotten slightly hot and bothered. But never before has erotic fiction made me gasp and fan myself as much as this book did.
Mary Ann Ferguson is a sexually inexperienced country bumpkin who moves to D.C. to begin law school. When the R.A of her dorm, Patricia, takes her under her wing, Mary Ann's eyes are opened to a sexual freedom she never knew existed.
My feelings about this book are so conflicted.
I feel like I should feel dirty for reading it. I should not be able to relate to the sisters of "Alpha Phi Fuckem" sorority and their liberal use of the cooch as some sort of feminist liberation. I mean, really, I have no issue with a woman sleeping with 50 men a week but, let's be honest; a slut by any other name is still just that. Even still, I found myself cheering for the heroines every time they picked up strange men and were screwing the living hell out them within ten minutes. I found myself rooting for the 'countrified' Mary Ann as she took on 7,8, or 9 men.
Jeez, I'm a dirty, dirty girl. The thing is, I'd ordinarily feel ashamed to even admit to reading a book called "The Indoctrination of Soror Ride Dick", let alone reading it and loving it! But Zane truly has a gift for creating characters with depth and placing them in everyday situations. She puts a completely new feminine spin on sexuality and freedom. This book was incredibly well written and captivating.
I'd recommend it to anyone who's into erotic fiction.
This book right here, had to have been the best book back in the days ever. Zane started an entire new found "Sexual" underground so to say for people who were less "experienced. People on MySpace actually had groups centered around her books, ("literally") that's how popular they were. I don't know if there will ever be another Zane, but her popularity was incredible. History repeats itself, so maybe kids will just pick up her books and follow suit. Who knows?
Everyone knows that once a confined person finally has a taste of the pie, they crave it for eternity, and that's basically the story of Mary Ann.
Mary Ann was a predictable character, but I reckon twists and turns wasn't the point of penning this novel. The point was to turn you on so much that you would need your lover or favorite lube nearby. That...which is what Zane is known for...was done to perfection. The story within itself didn't really excite me, but I did enjoy it.
This book is short and I wish there was a sequel. I feel like seeing Mary Ann's struggle to keep APF a secret from her relationship would be more entertaining. Just my opinion though.
I read this book 10 yrs ago and it was hot and steamy. My prudish self and my "inner goddess"(50 shades) were in conflict and I did not have any friends to discuss the book. Fast forward to 50 shades of Grey and I can talk to anyone on the street! Oh and there is no more conflict!!
In my continued quest to become familiar with the genre of Urban Fiction I decided to try some Zane, who is hands-down the most popular author of this genre in my library system. To save time I opted to listen to this book and have to first say that I really enjoyed the narrator. Now, on to the actual story... First of all, Zane clearly advertises her novels as erotica and this is a step up in my opinion. Many of the other Urban Fiction novels I've been reading seem to try to pass their books off as something "better". There is nothing wrong with erotica and Zane seems to do it pretty well. This book actually has a story that progresses well and is rather believable. The characters are forward and likeable for the most part and the story is about more than sex - it's about a woman's changing world and relationships with others and herself. Now for the picky stuff... The first 8 or so tracks on the audio book can easily be skipped. Urban Fiction authors seem to like to spend a lot of time thanking people. Readers would be better off getting right to the first chapter. A final picky question: WHY do audio books have sound effects these days? I can imagine what a door slam, rainfall and zipper sound like.
I'm not a fan. The story didn't keep my attention as much as my stubbornness in finishing it did. I suppose I'm not the target demographic, but it wasn't the worst possible way to spend an afternoon.
Zane APE this book is about sexual freedom in a sorority. What kept me reading this book was the intelligence the author uses in this book. I would have never thought about making a book about a sorority nobody knows about or the true meaning of the sorority. My favorite line in this book is when Mary Ann says “So, people might assume you all are gay.” You both know you’re real men so don’t sweat it. I think the author tried to write this book by saying there is things that are out in the world that are secrets. Like a sorority. This book made me have funny emotions because of the way Zane puts out her characters in different emotions and what they do. This book is extreme. The beginning of the book was captivating to me because the first chapter. It sord of tells you about the sorority before she gets there. Who was my favorite character in this book? The main character Mary Ann because she goes from being the girl who didn’t know what was going on in the sorority and she didn’t know what to do, from that to going to be the champ at everything. My least favorite character would be Patricia because I feel like she the worst at everything and that she did Mary Ann wrong. If this book was a movie, I would put Mary Ann as my main character again and I would put the whole sorority and the same men back into the movie. I would recommend this book to anybody who is interested in it because it’s a very intimate book, but it cracks me up. I was wrong on my prediction of the end of this book. I really don’t like telling the ending because I won’t other people to find out on their own.
This book was amazing. It was real sexual but, it gave great detail. The sisters of APF are all dynamic characters because they all began to change their friendship and began to become secretive about their sex lives. The setting of the story took place at an college were the woman are in a feternity called APF. The APF are full of sexual aroused woman who all want to have wild one night stands with men that they will never meet again. Mean while the main character eventually catches on to what APF really is and wants to join the fun after leaving her old boyfriend at home and meeting new men at the college that seems to be a players, but he says he is really interested in her. The main character then begans to change and become attached to them but, she still is having wild nights in the APF club. The story was a fast pace and had lots of emotions for all the woman to adapt to.I loved this story also because it used imaginary views of the enviroments of were their wild nights took place and how they would dress at late nights. I really did enjoy this book, not becaus it was sexual but because it was eye catching.
listen. this book was spicy and hilarious from start to finish 😭 zane gave us a bold, erotic coming-of-age wrapped in wild plot twists and even wilder pledging rituals — and yes, i devoured every messy minute of it.
mary ann started off as this sweet, reserved girl just trying to figure herself out — but once she got involved with alpha phi fuckem (APF)? oh baby, she unlocked a whole new version of herself. by the end of the book, sis had the confidence, the control, and the power. the character development? chef’s kiss 👏🏾
i loved the way zane balanced pure erotic chaos with messages about sisterhood, confidence, and women reclaiming their pleasure. it was over-the-top in the best way — dramatic, nasty, and liberating. and those sisters?? absolutely unhinged — but in the kind of way that makes you want to group chat your girls and say, “we might need a secret society too.” 😂
5/5 for pure entertainment, steam, and shock value. a classic Zane experience.
I remember as a preteen catching my cousin reading this book. She had stolen it from my aunt and I read 1 chapter before putting it down lol. A while later I was stealing my own mother's Zane books but I had never gotten another chance to read this one until today.
And baby, all I can say is I wish there was more. I loved every page of this book. Olive is for sure who I wanna be when I "grow up". I partly listened to the audiobook and made the mistake of listening at work. I was blushing like a virgin in a sex store.
NO!!! Just NO!!! A horrible mash up of cliche expressions on steroids. The dialogue between the so called law school student characters is raunchy, junior high school level at best and totally unconvincing. This trashy novel is more indicative of boring, poorly written, graphic porn than erotic literature. Simply awful. For truly good erotica, I would recommend an author like Lorilei James.
I've come to realize when I was reading Zane in high school I had a much different mindset then, than I do now. I'm simply not into her books like I used to be.
This book was just...meh for me. It's the typical bag em & tag em full of steamy sex kinda book. Your typical hood novel or urban style book and that's just not my style anymore.
First off, I have been a Zane fan for a long time. However, this one takes the cake. I don’t so much agree with what’s being promoted. The PID could have been omitted as well. But the characters and storyline are both gripping. I understand why her novels are often compared to Tyler Perry plays. This one is similar because maybe it’s just me seeing the exact same person in different costumes playing most of the characters. Idk if this was done on purpose, but knowing Zane, those characters are well fleshed out. Thank you for an entertaining read sis!
I haven’t read this book in over a decade but I still get the same feels from it. Zane definitely did her thing with this one. The idea of an underground organization where you can be sexually free is a dream come true. I’m definitely about to revisit the sequel.
This was my first Zane book! It was entertaining but not exactly my cup of tea. The characters were too thinly drawn and I realized that I enjoy romances much more than I enjoy erotica. The sex positiveness was admirable though.
As usual zane delivered I always read her books when I'm the mood for something raunchy. It was a bit hardcore at times and still interesting. It gave a whole new meaning to vacationing with the girls. I'd recommend it but definitely not for the faint of heart
