If you’ve ever been frustrated with the angst and anger in this world, or pondered how simple life could be if you put down your phone and breathed in nature, you are not alone. Vicky McLain’s second poetry book takes on these issues while trying to find hope in a dimly lit world.
Well, Broken Moon, it was going to go deep wasn't it. The poet didn't disappoint, kicking off with two introspective poems right off the bat. McLain is a lyrical writer, and her verse would fit well with a guitar and piano. It's really smooth, it's got a lovely pace and cadence to it. But it's not just mellow fancy words. There's a lot underlying it.
Feeling alone Sitting at home Tweeting Treating Others with disdain It's the lonely you feel When nothing seems real
EKG is an exceptional poem, I just love the way the author has followed that beat throughout, driving us through. It's fantastic.
I loved Abyss too. I've been there. I've seen that. This element of autobiography in these is just beautiful, the poetry is beautiful but there's a solemn edge.
There's a spiritual element in these, perhaps even religious. It's very much a journey of sorts, this collection. It's like a look on who we are, the microcosm, the macrocosm.
Judgement Day is another excellent poem.
The second half is dedicated to the poet's dog, who had surgery. Thankfully she survived, bless her.
The melancholy is tangible, the imagery, beautiful. Serpentine Branches is just gorgeous.
There's just something about the way McLain writes. She writes about real things, about our world now, about what we see. You can't help but be carried off because you can see the truth in it, the poignancy, the vulnerability.
I'm a big fan. I've been waiting for this collection for ages! Have a read. You might become a fan too.
Second book from the author – absolutely enjoyed every word. Vicky McLain is a gifted human being. Poetry, writing, art, she can't get anything wrong. Do yourself a favour and read her work!
This was my first time reading something from Vicky, and I am not disappointed at all.
The poems in this collection flow amazingly and they deal with some very important topics. There were a couple of great poems about mental health and the state of the world which I enjoyed the most.
Fractured Universe, traverse, reality of Me, yesterdays, We Matter, The Dark Side, cocoon, and Anxiety are a few of my favorites from the entire book. I don't usually like collections like these, but I ended up enjoying this a lot. Especially the overall concept and the way the author's honest was so visible through each and every poem. Definitely a great poetry read.
Although I’m now aware that the author has written two poetry collections, this was the first one I’ve read and, although it’s an overused expression, this book really does take you on a journey.
Aside from the obvious talent as a poet, as I read each piece, it felt as if I was taking a step with the author, as if we were travelling together. The profoundly moving poems dedicated to friends and family were perhaps my favourites although I really enjoyed them all.
I would obviously recommend this collection to anyone who loves poetry but even if you don’t believe yourself to be a fan, there is so much that’s relatable, it’s as if the writer is talking with you.
A gem of a book and one I shall prize for many years to come.
While I don’t read a lot of modern poetry, I have been exposed to McLain’s poetic prowess through her social media posts and have for some time admired her way with words. I was therefore interested to explore her latest collection of poems, “Broken Moon”.
While the subject matter largely relates to life matters giving rise to anger and angst, the poetry itself is light and lyrical. McLain traverses topics and circumstances familiar to all of us – COVID lockdown, losing loved ones, longing for simpler times, the people we depend on, those who let us down…
Broken Moon is an enjoyable collection of poetry, that captures deep emotions, cultural reality, and spirituality. The intersecting point is the poet herself. This is a collection that will speak differently in different seasons of life. The beauty and diversity are reflections of the author and her art.
