A group of humans transported to a new reality must fight for their survival—and that of their loved ones—in the third book of this fantasy adventure.
On the planet of Fanwath survival depends on the skills, levels, and powers one attains through combat or exploration. Unfortunately, Morgan, Bronwyn, and Olivia aren’t on Fanwath anymore. In fact, they don’t know where the hell they are, but one thing’s for they’re in constant danger.
Pulled through one portal after another, the trio has found themselves in a seemingly endless dungeon contending with a menagerie of horrors. But the more challenges they face, the more powerful they become—even to the point of transforming their physical beings. And their newfound talents are going to be sorely needed . . .
Because while Morgan is away, his mate, Issa, back in First Landing, learns she’s carrying twins. Overjoyed, she can’t wait for Morgan to return. But Issa’s joy will soon turn to dread, as a mighty enemy fleet approaches First Landing with the aim of “recruiting” its citizens for their evil machinations. Can Morgan and his friends make their way home in time to prevent their worst nightmares from coming true?
The third volume of the LitRPG adventure series from the author of Royal Road hit Victor of Tucson—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!
Plum Parrot is the pen name of author MC Gallup, who grew up in Southern Arizona and spent much of his youth wandering around the Sonoran Desert, hunting imaginary monsters and building forts. He studied creative writing at the University of Arizona and, for a number of years, attempted to teach middle schoolers to love literature and write their own stories. If he's not out walking his Airedale Terrier, you can find Gallup writing, reading his favorite authors, or playing D&D with friends and family.
So this story consists of 3 POVs and I HATED that aspect. It completely detracted from the story. Each of these POVs deserved their own story. Instead they each got some half-assed brief story focus. They could have been so much better and it kills me. I still gave it 4 stars because I liked the story, even though I think it deserves 3 stars.
It was easy to skim through her content in the first two books but having her working alongside Olivia and Morgan for much of this book was a distraction.
That said, it also seems like the dialogue is deteriorating. It seems to be more juvenile and people are far too giddy despite the seriousness of their situations.
Hopefully the next book comes along with some maturity because the story and world building and magic is first class otherwise.
I am enjoying the comradery of the main cast and the sense of growth they experience. I am less thrilled by constant shifts in focus. A story told from three main points of view can be a bit scattered and Bronwyn's POV seems the least developed.
**spoilers below**
Reintroducing characters from the first book and then having Bronwyn swoop in to save the day undercuts their capabilities. Olivia's story focuses on the hunt for a serial killer that goes from killing randoms to her professor with a cryptic note for Olivia. Then the killer turns out to have killed the others to upset Olivia without any obvious connections. Morgan's adventurous wife feels she cannot keep up with his rapid growth and suddenly decides to change from a Battle Witch to a Prime Artificer which she grows immediately into a Heart Artificer. And the group of "recruiters" spending the entire book ever so slowly working to entrap the community, when they have three powerful individuals which are obviously going to end up fighting the community's heroes. The talking is very well written. Each character is distinct and believable. I think my issues stem from the work coming from a serial web series that exacerbates the continuity flow. I am still hoping to read further adventures from Plum Parrot
Morgan's still the swellest guy you'll ever meet. Bronwyn can still suck it (and seems like things are developing well here, if the author ever returns to this series), and Olivia, well, she's a lot of fun and stuff and while I've seen a lot of reviews complain about dumb characters in lots of books, I've never complained about that before.... Until now. Goddamn did the author make Olivia look dumb AF, like wow... She's supposed to be a genius, right? Well she should probably stick to science and stay away from investigating and whatnot. Anyway, I enjoyed the book and series and hope the author returns to write more for these characters. They've probably improved their craft a lot after writing Victor of Tucson and their other series (I'm guessing this was the first, or among the first, that was written, though I haven't actually checked..). Thank you plum parrot, you're as swell as Morgan!
I don't know if this series will continue, but just in case..
First, I don't love the route author took with MMC's evolutions. He was compelling as a physically powerful sellsword, less so as a "lithe," "elegant" flyer. Plus wings on humans are silly. The center of gravity is all wrong and I cringe at the physical awkwardness every flight scene. There are so many great choices for magical flight; angel wings are not one of them.
Second, I'm so over humanizing evil races. Yes life is shades of grey, but sometimes the grey is so dark that it's just not worth agonizing over. Just kill it. The yovashi are twisted lovecraftian horrors that eat people. I don't need or want to sympathize with that. Should the fly sympathize with the spider?
Anyway, solid read otherwise. This series is my second favorite by the author, after cyber dreams. Despite my criticism, I'm hoping we get a book 4.
I had forgotten, until I just reread it, how great this book—and really the entire series—was. I first read it on Patreon, and it was just as good the second time.
The world building is just fantastic, you really feel for the characters, and the magic System is top tier. Really, if you haven’t read this book, what are you waiting for?
Why are all the MCs FOREST GUMPS?? Have they never in their life seen a TV show, movie, or read a novel? Or the author is just not as smart as he wants to think??? Morgan leaves an enemy behind without making sure he is dead. Olivia ignores all the clues and blindly walks into a trap.
This was a great spin off series that I seriously can't wait for more of them to come out. If you have nt read any of these or Victor of Tucson and you like litrpg then read them immediately
If there was a point to this book I totally missed it, there were so many plot holes more than there was story content. It achieved absolutely nothing and had a miserable ending.
Best of the series so far. The murder mystery was exciting and I loved Morgan’s story in this one as well. Bronwyn’s story was a bit of a let down compared to in other books but I don’t like Fey plot lines so that may just be me
Captivating story about the first group of colonists from earth being assumed by the System. Plum Parrot (Miles) weaves the tales of three of the colonists as they navigate the new system and become champions for humans in the new world.
