Photo Recipes Live #2

The Adobe Photoshop CS5 Book for Digital Photographers

Rate this book
Are you ready for a Photoshop book that breaks all the rules? Updated for Adobe Photoshop CS5, this top-selling book breaks new ground by doing something for digital photographers that's rare--it cuts through the bull and shows readers exactly "how to do it." It's not a bunch of theory; it doesn't challenge readers to come up with their own settings or figure it out on their own. Instead, it shows them, step by step, the exact techniques used by today's cutting-edge digital photographers and retouchers, and it does something that virtually no other Photoshop book has ever done--it tells you flat-out which settings to use, when to use them, and why. Including coverage of all the newest features of CS5--such as the amazing Content-Aware Fill, Puppet Warp, HDR Pro, and the completely redesigned Lens Correction filter.

The Photoshop CS5 Book for Digital Photographers is full-color, graphically rich, and contains project-based examples of every key step in the digital photography process. Integrating all the newest features of Photoshop CS5 into the book's workflow, Scott shows readers how to work with their images like a pro, from importing to organization to correction to output. In addition to fully updating the book for CS5, Scott has also added a brand new chapter, which lets readers in on his entire, personal post-processing workflow by incorporating his popular 7-Point System into this book.

For a solid beginner, this is a good book, but any prospective reader should be aware that the first half of the book is, essentially, spent describing the tools in Camera Raw. I don't fault Kelby for this - most serious digital photographers prefer to work with their images in the raw format before, finally, opening it in PS for final touch ups, but I found myself continually asking, "well, yes, but when are we getting to the photoshop part?". That said, he did cover the most interesting new feature of CS5, the content-aware filter, which I was curious as to what he would say about it, and he also talked a bit about HDR photography, and actually included some things that I,, unfamiliar with HDR techniques, didn't know.

The information is kind of thick, for a hands on learner like me, this book is definitely going to act more as a reference rather than a die-hard bag of tricks I keep memorized at every moment. Lots of interesting tricks and ideas, but, in the end, it simply didn't feel like a book about Photoshop. I haven't perused the PS bibles out there, but if you are looking for detailed information about all things Photoshop, you might be better served there. As is, I basically read this as a reason to stick with my Lightroom workflow.

I jumped from Photoshop CS to CS5 - and before I even installed the new software, I went out and purchased this book by Scott Kelby. I have two of his other Photoshop books and like those, this book is an excellent resource for Photoshop users of any level.

The author sets down concise, step-by-step instructions for various processes - from using Minibridge to converting photos to black & white images to creating panorama shots from multiple individual photos, and everything in between. Screenshots accompany the clear, easy-to-follow text, and the before and after images are crisp and illustrate the different techniques under discussion. A must-have book for anyone who is thinking of upgrading to CS5.

Need to start to read all my Photoshop books so I can work on my photos! simple as that. Kelby writes with humor and not sure if I want to go through this one or go straight to Adobe's Classroom in a Book, which is straight classroom learning. Kelby is fun in his digital photography books, but I need to learn this quickly, so we'll see.

Plain and simply put, this is a CS5 recipe book for photographers. And perhaps much more. Time will tell. For me, the proof of the pudding will be in an extended application of the techniques and procedures Kelby chose to include in it.

in spite of the bad jokes and over inflated ego of Mr. Kelby, this is a good book to get the important points of a very complicated bit of software.
