Winning isn't everything in the game of basketball, but who wants to come in second? It takes dedication and discipline to be the best, and the Shohoku High hoops team wants to be just that. They have one year left to make their captain's dream of reaching the finals come true—will they do it? Takehiko Inoue's legendary basketball manga is finally here and the tale of a lifetime is in your hands.

Shohoku steadily increases their lead against Ryonan with less than ten minutes remaining in the game. But the all-out attack wears Shohoku down and fatigue is getting the better of them. Without Coach Anzai's guidance, Shohoku struggles to hold on against Ryonan as their weaknesses are exposed one by one. Sakuragi's inexperience is one of their biggest and the margin for error is slim with Sakuragi on the court. Is this game going to push Shohoku to the edge of total collapse?

At this point, Takehiko Inoue has the readers in his grasp, he knows what keeps the readers at the edge of their seats, and delivers just that.

If reading volume 20 makes you uneasy, most likely because you are absolutely rooting for Shohoku, but Ryonan once again catches up as their star player Sendo was just holding back his true talent, then Slam Dunk proves to be effective in the narrative point of view. Totally investing with the Shohoku players just meant that you don't want them to lose.

Inoue's talent is not the element of surprise. His writing is methodical yet predictive, bit where he really shines is in execution. He knows when to be serious and when to be funny. And almost always, he is correct.

Only two minutes left and Mitsui collapsed. What is going on? The name Sendo won't ever get out of my head.

Slam Dunk, Vol. 20 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (171–179) of the on-going manga series.

The tankōbon continues the game of Shohoku High School and Ryonan High School. With Ryota Miyagi scoring, Shohoku continues to lead by almost fifteen points. As such, Coach Moichi Taoka of the Ryonan team is forced to make Jun Uozumi return to the game. Uozumi manages to reduce Ryonan's disadvantage with help from Akira Sendoh, and continues rebounding most of Shohoku's missed shots.

The high performances from Uozumi and Sendoh allow them to reduce Shohoku's lead to only ten points. Sendoh continues to contain both Kaede Rukawa and Hanamichi Sakuragi, and Ryota Miyagi has problems defending and commits fouls. Rukawa and Sendoh continue scoring making, alternately expanding and reducing Shohoku's advantage. However, with only two minutes left, Sendoh reduces the gap to only two points and Hisashi Mitsui suddenly falls unconscious.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue. For the most part, the game between Shohoku High School and Ryonan High School was narrated and depicted rather well. It is rather getting a tad ridiculous as this tankōbon literally spans six minutes of the game. The dramatic cliffhanger with Hisashi Mitsui falling unconscious makes the chances of Shohoku High's advantage of two points in a precarious position as the Nationals are on the line.

All in all, Slam Dunk, Vol. 20 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

*This review is for the series as a whole with 4.5 out of 5 stars*

I’ve posted 2 articles about Slam Dunk early this year so I’m sure you guys already have an idea how I adore this series. The anime series was incredible but its manga counterpart is beyond incredible, it was AHA-mazing!

I’m not a sporty kind of girl and I don’t think I’ll be anytime soon, but I think what’s great about reading books and watching shows is that you learn and (kind of) experience a lot of things you don’t normally do in real life. And because of Slam Dunk, I learn to appreciate sports stories and eventually love them.

When I started reading this manga, it felt so nostalgic. It’s not so different in the anime so while reading it, I keep on picturing out all those episodes which I think made my reading experience even more enjoyable.

Slam Dunk showcases a great team work. What I learn to appreciate about sports stories/shows is that it’ll give you a lot of lessons about what it means to be a great sportsman. And Slam Dunk absolutely slammed dunk that part!

I usually watch the anime series first before reading its manga counterpart and as for Slam Dunk, I’ve watched it quite a number of times already and I don’t think I’ll ever stop watching it, *wink. Even after watching the anime, I can still feel the tension, the suspense, and the excitement while reading this manga.

As you can read on its title, this manga centered around the sports basketball and through it weaved a really good story everyone of us will enjoy and appreciate whether you’re into sports or not. Another thing I love about reading manga is that it will never ceased to make you laugh with its funny scenes and Slam Dunk had it big time! I lost count how many times I laughed my heart out reading this masterpiece.

The drawings were really so good too plus those facial expressions were epic, especially Sakuragi’s, haha.

This story has a main character but I love that it didn’t just center around him but the author also gave its other characters a chance to share their own story. I love the character development as well especially Sakuragi’s.

And speaking of Sakuragi, I didn’t eventually like him at first. He’s definitely trouble and I didn’t quite appreciate his annoying antics and his excessive bragging. But all throughout the story, you can’t definitely help it but like his character. As I’ve said above, Sakuragi’s character development is definitely one you should see. From being this good for nothing delinquent, he became a true sportsman. I just absolutely love his improvement not just in basketball but eventually as a person. It’s definitely hard for me to explain but I just LOVE Sakuragi. Ofcourse he can still be an airhead sometimes but I can see now that it’s one of the things that makes him quite likeable, haha.

Slam Dunk has some pretty amazing group of characters and as I’ve said in this article, they come in varieties so I’m sure a lot of readers can find some characters they can relate and love.

The anime series left off the national championship and let me tell you guys, it was already good as it is. It was full of intense scenes with a right blend of humor but the national championship parts were sooooooo good I can still feel its intensity even after finishing this manga. Actually, I cried pretty hard when they won! You should definitely read it!!!

Although the ending felt short which ofcourse makes you want to ask for more, I guess it was still a pretty good and hopeful ending, not just for team Shohoku but for the other teams as well. Besides, after that intense match with Sannoh, I don’t think Slam Dunk failed me.

So if you’re looking for an intense sports shonen manga to read, Slam Dunk should be on top of your list.

too young to fearrrrrrrrr :))))))))))

Oh no!

I'm having a mental breakdown right now, the stakes are so high and you can feel the pressure in the air by just reading this volumes. Obviously i want Shohoku to win but Inoue made care for Ryonan so much that at this point i'm in conflict with myself. NO! don't say that man!!! GO SHOHOKU!!!

Something that impressed me (a lot) is that even if Sakuragi doesn't appear in some chapters it dones't matter, even though he's one of the (if not the one) drive force of this series and the one guy you want to see succeed, the game, the other players, there's so much going one that you can go without him for a little while that it doesn't matter.

Kudos to you Takehiko Inoue for making me care about everything in this incredible series.

The tension slowly creeps here, albeit predictably. Slowly, Shohoku unravels and Ryonan regain their lead. Sendoh is incredible here. But what are Rukawa and Sakuragi doing? Idk. Akagi acts rash too. The absence of Anzai sensei looms heavily over the team. Dark clouds. It ends with the tensions at fever-pitch. Miichan has collapsed.

Shohoku takes a commanding lead in this volume but with less than ten minutes remaining we begin to see what the opposing coach was banking on—Shohoku direly miss the guidance of their wise Coach Anzai. Coach Anzai is sleeping peacefully in the hospital, recovering from his minor heart attack (?) as Shohoku is about to have one of their own. Sakuragi saved one and cause another.

It’s does get more intense as we draw near to the resolution of the match, but I can’t help but feel like I’m a little used to the formula. It kinda feels like things can just happen, Rukawa can just score, like that, they just get goals on a whim. So it really means the only goals that counts are the very last one. And we haven’t gotten to there yet.

One of the more iconic of sports manga. It's the first series where I actually both read the manga and watched the anime. It has flawed protagonists, growing up pains, colourful characters, and beautiful meaningful relationships, all neatly wrapped around the context of college basketball.

At the time of this review, I have finished the series, except for volumes 22 and 24, which I am not sure if I will go back and read.

This was quite an exciting backdrop as Shohoku continues without a coach. They are hanging in there, but we see the stardom of Sendoh. With Sendoh and some of the characters, I see the foundation for Kuroko's Basketball, which I will talk more in depth as I go along with the volumes in Slam Dunk and in Kuroko's Basketball. Ryonan's coach make some dire predictions about the fate of Shohoku. We then on an uh-oh of a cliffhanger.

Verdict: This was quite exciting!
