At last -- a book devoted to the concerns of people of color that will help you enhance and protect the health and beauty of your skin, hair, and nails. Dr. Susan Taylor, a Harvard-trained dermatologist and a beautiful woman of color, bases her advice on more than fifteen years' experience treating patients in private practice and at the first-of-its-kind Skin of Color Center in New York City, which she directs. Her quizzes, product recommendations, and patient-tested solutions provide information you can use today! She
I would recommend this to anyone with skin of color, which includes more than just Black women. It answered a lot of questions I had but could not find answers to, or was too shy to ask about. It makes great recommendations of regimens and products. This was one of the first books I purchased when I finally started taking my health and appearance seriously years ago, and I still go back to it as a refresher or to look up something new.
She doesn't know that much about natural hair and thinks it can only get to "afro length". She also suggests pomade with lanolin or petroleum, which weighs down hair and is really hard to wash out. Its definitely bad if you want to maintain curls, because it will slick back hair. There is also a section where she promotes skin bleaching. While she doesn't say this because of a racial inferiority complex; she suggests bleaching knees, elbows, dark patches and freckles. Bleaching skin makes the skin thin, damaged and prone to scaring. In short its bad for your skin, but shes promoting in in a skin care book. I didn't bother reading any thing after chapter 5.
This is a solid straightforward beauty book for women of color. This book would be helpful for all women of color but the focus is more or less on African American women and their specific beauty needs. A great book to keep in mind if you have a patron of color looking for a helpful and easy to read beauty book.
This book has some good information but the 5 minute and 2 minute showers was a bit weird. I did learn some things and will definitely be using this book as a reference.
