Boy Princess is a pulse-quickening tale of swords and sorcery, far-away kingdoms, and the fairest princess in all the land. Except this is a fairy tale with a twist. When a prince's soon-to-be-bride elopes two days before their wedding, her desperate family dress up their young son and send him to get married in her place. With his deep blue eyes and flowing blond hair (and strategically placed apples), nobody bats an eye at the pretty pubescent standing before them. But how long can he keep up the charade? Despite the odds stacked against them, the two princes share adventures and intimacies in a story filled with imagination and visual delight.
A Prince married a princess... But the princess is a prince! Seems a very easy plot, no? Well, it's not... Believe me, it's anything, but a simple story.
Can love be stronger than jealousy and betrayal? In a different reality, with amazing character, wonderful drawing and many surprises this is much more an a simple yaoi... It's perfection.
I think the cover image cal already convince you it's a high quality work... And deserve to be read
I just finish all this serie, noticing I can't give less than 5 stars, and sadly I can't give more. I recommend it to all yaoi readers, and keep a tissue near, it's a heartbreaking love story.
Could have been great but the abruptness of scenes change was utterly confusing. I also have some problem with the art. The characters seems to have frozen facial expression. Otherwise the storyline is pretty interesting.
It was cute. The main plot was essentially boring. The boy princess deal? Nah. Not interesting. The sub plots was the main thing that caught my attention. I really loved the princes and their pursuit in love. I have to say that Jed's brother's lover was the best character out of the whole thing. And Jed's past was extremely unique, touching, and a bit terrifying at the same time. But back to the main plot... I just couldn't feel anything for those two main characters. The ending was extremely bland as well. Some of the art was really wow to look at but sometimes the art was also just really cringe worthy. If the author was a more consistent with the art, this series would have definitely gotten a 4/5.
Let me tell you something first: the style of this manga is horrible, at least concerning faces. The details of the background are beautiful - but the characters look horrible. Those fat fat eyelashes framing tilted eyes and dark, big, pouty mouths... Not my favourite style. The story was okay, I liked reading this but I thought about giving it only two stars. When I finish a manga I normally have some kind of feeling, mostly a warm and nice feeling, sometimes I feel really annoyed. This manhwa didn't leave me with any particular feeling. I am a crybaby and easily get happy or angry - I feel what I read. And I really did not feel much with this manhwa, kinda disappointing. I am still thinking about changing the rating to two stars, but the story wasn't so bad.
When I borrowed this from the library I was warned by Glorious Leader Insane Otaku that it was shōnen-ai. As a manga beginner I vaguely understood that to mean "girl's manga". I've read some very girly stuff which turned out OK (e.g. the first volume of Princess Ai) so that didn't scare me. However it turns out that shōnen-ai is rather more girly.
I was expecting a manga about a little boy who for some reason had to be a princess. It didn't occur to me that it was about a big boy who had to be a princess, and furthermore, he had to marry a prince as well. Even worse, he seems to enjoy his role rather too much.
Essentially this story is soft-core gay porn. This is a genre I will try to avoid in future! It's not really so much the sexuality that disturbs me, but the inconsistent behaviour of the boy princess. He starts the story at least a little bit reluctant to dress up as a princess, but by the end is complaining that the prince won't sleep with him. At no stage does he admit he's a raving queen-to-be. In my experience sexual tension in manga is never explicitly stated, but in this case it's a bit over the top. Of all the bizarre sexual tension manga I've read, this was the worst.
There's not really much I can recommend about this book. I didn't even like the art. All of the characters look like elves wearing bad make-up, and I could only tell them apart by hair colour. Next time I'm warned about shōnen-ai I'll listen.
Series review: The yaoi itself was more of an undertone of this series. The characters are just trying to find happiness in a world of politics. The story is a bit cutesy and cruel, but it never shows anything graphic. I enjoyed it and read the whole thing in a day. The herbalist tribe was a pretty creative idea, and the ending was satisfactory, but could have been better. The story is medieval politics heavy, so if you don't enjoy that kind of thing, I wouldn't recommend it.
Graphic novel about a prince that has to dress up as his sister, when his sister runs off with a commoner right before her wedding. Of course, the prince falls in love with his groom, and the groom eventually discovers that his "bride" isn't who "she" seems. I liked the general premise of the story; however, the artwork was very confusing in terms of who was who. Most of the men looked way too similar to one another, especially the various older brothers of the two main characters. There's also a very confusing side story between the crown prince of the husband's kingdom and the healer. This series would have seriously benefitted from either color illustrations so that it was a little easier to tell who was which prince based on hair, eye, and clothing colors or more differentiation in facial features. It's a fun, short reading, just a little confusing.
I remember enjoying this very much as a teen, but revisiting it as an adult has left me somewhat underwhelmed. I think I loved this for the unusual (to teen me) subject matter, for the unusual (to teen me) art, and the POTENTIAL of the story. The characters can be a bit difficult to distinguish from each other, particularly if they're related, and although there's definitely a story being set up it's somewhat vague and changes scenes too abruptly. Still, it's a pretty book and would probably still be enjoyable for teens; there's nothing "sexy" in here except for a few kisses between the main couple and some topless men bathing in a river.
The art is not mainstream, and it can be a bit difficult to follow at times, somewhat because the characters are difficult to tell apart in some scenes. Parts of the story feel rushed into (notably the beginning), though once it picks up properly, its well paced. It's easy to overlook whatever irks I may have, however, since the characters are so sweet, and the story is as well. The art will likely be a hurdle for some people, but it truly does compliment the storytelling well, and I'd recommend to a fan of shonen ai that can get past that.
This series was a bit confusing at times, and it took me quite a while to sort out which character was what because a few of them looked the same. Even figuring out names was a bit difficult because they didn't explicitly introduce characters. But, once I got what was going on and who was who I really enjoyed it! Much more political than I expected. A good read!
A pretty series that got dropped (or was slow to release) back when I was reading it. I got tired of waiting for the rest of the series and lost interest. Swapped my copies of v. 1 and 2 away years ago.
I've read and reread this so many times. It's one of my absolute favourites. The delightful characters, the enchanting and humorous story, the beautiful outfits, this manga is so much fun to read every time. ❤️
I remember reading this as a preteen and enjoying it, though the story can be confusing at times and the characters are often visually hard to distinguish.
I absolutely loved Sweet Blood so I had to give this one a read. I found volume one to be just as beautiful as Sweet Blood but at times a bit confusing.
I bought this book on sale for $3. The plot seemed interesting and the art decent. But as I made my way through the first book and eventually the rest of the series I realized that despite the story which I did enjoy to the end, I was less than impressed by the storytelling and the art. The characters which at first were gorgeous soon blurred into one another. It was hard to tell the three brothers apart unless they used names or one was off somewhere. And the crowned prince of the there kingdom was nearly impossible to tell apart from the man he slept with. For women it was even worse. They all had the same faces and most had their hair covered and the headwear in question changed constantly so you could not pin down a certain hat to a certain lady. This did not help since the story itself seemed to jump from place to place. Events seemed to happen randomly, some with little context that left you confused or wondering what happened between then and the last time you seen them. Certain storylines were fuzzy at best and others were started but left inconclusive. As for the climax of the whole series, it seemed to have been skipped completely making me wonder if I had missed an entire chapter of the book. We go from wondering what will happen to all the characters to days later and barely any explanation other than prince Jed being allowed to flee and living with Nicole. And his brother the crown prince dead in his lovers arm( an don't even get me started in that part on the series). Overall I found it a drag to get through. It felt rushed and messy as if the people involved weren't trying their best. I really enjoyed the story as it could have been so much better if a lot more effort was put into it.
From time to time, I experience some odd situations in terms of reading. I buy books without reading the description, I get mysteriously drawn to a book I’ve never heard of or liked the cover, I foresee the most unthinkable scenes in the plots… Anyway, sometimes I’m pretty messed up. With Boy Princess, from Seyoung Kim, was no different.
If you, like me, thought it would be a funny light yaoi manhwa (Korean manga), you are very and deeply wrong. Boy Princess has a deep plot, several characters that look all the same (which was a nightmare for me, because I suck with names, so I remember characters by their faces), some weird ends during the story and an unbelievable happy ending after so much drama.
Moreover, I didn’t feel a connection with the main characters and there was little comedy about it all, to my frustrations. I prefer less drama and, even hating many parts of what I was reading, I didn’t stop until I had read all nine volumes of it. NINE. In less than 4 hours.
That’s the bizarre part. I couldn’t put it down. I found the title at Manga Rock’s app and didn’t put my iPad down until I saw the end of Boy Princess. It was like a big tide washing over me, if I was going to die if I didn’t finish it. Strong black magic, really.
Anyway, I’m not a fan of manhwa generally speaking and I have a lot of issues with this series, but I strongly recommend it if you like a good yaoi drama in an alternative universe :)
And that was the Boy Princess phenomenon that crossed my way this year, thanks for reading it!
Loved it!! Some parts became confusing for the simple fact that it switched characters so smoothly that it was hard to tell, the same as that some characters looked so similar (Girl Nicole, Elena, Shahi, and Derik). Although, I must admit that I am quite new to reading manga, I probably most things confusing in it. But I believe once you read (or watch, if you like to watch anime) for a while you'll get used to the author and creator of the stories way of writing and drawing, so you'll be able to tell easier, like in "Boy Princess", the small differences between characters. I found the story addicting, which is probably why I was able to read all 9 volumes in one day! The love and sarcasm in this story is awesome, and I just love Jed and Nicole's relationship after Nicole's 'little' secret is found out by Jed. The teasing in this is funny, and the graphics are wonderful (I love to draw, but I'm nowhere near as good as the person who drew the graphics in this!). A MUST read for anyone who likes BL. I know some people complain of the realism of the dialogue, but I honestly didn't find much wrong with it. I mean, the author did well writing the story and making it seem like they were actually in medieval times. I enjoyed this story and give it 4 stars, for the simple reason that I was confused in some areas (But this rating might go up if/when I read this story again. You never know, maybe it is just because I', inexperienced with manga and graphic novels).
Felt like I ended up on the wrong side of the bookstore with this one. I'm not entirely sure this is a manga for boys who like boys, but the other manga advertised at the back of the book seem to indicate that it is.
I stumbled onto this manga while searching for children's books on gender issues and gender acceptance online through the library. The synopsis made it sound rather amusing. The idea of a young boy dressing up as a princess, as a stand-in for his runaway sister, spoke to some of the gender topics I was already thinking about.
Overall, though, it was just a rather confusing read. All the characters pretty much looked the same, with big jewel-like eyes and flowing blond hair. I couldn't tell them apart nor whether one was supposed to be a girl or a boy. Okay, the girls looked like girls (wearing dresses and with hair dressed up) but the boys also looked like girls. The tone was confusing, too. I couldn't tell, the whole time, if things were supposed to be funny or homo-erotic. Lastly, I'm not that good at reading manga, so I always get confused about what order to read the dialogue in. Not helping matters at all was the fact that a lot of dialogue on the inside edges was hidden by the binding, so I couldn't read it.
My guilty pleasure- shounen-ai- and this series is so cute. "Boy Princess is a pulse-quickening tale of swords and sorcery, far-away kingdoms, and the fairest princess in all the land. Except?this is a fairy tale with a twist.
I like the premise of this book, that a young prince is dressed up as a princess to replace his sister, who ran off with a stable hand. I like the groom in this unusual wedding, lovely Prince Jed. Some of the drawings are quite lovely. The story itself was a little disappointing. There's a lot of court intrigue, but it's not quite as good as the Cantarella, Volume 1 series. I'll probably still read the second volume, since this one ends just as the real princess returns...
I read this whole series and really enjoyed it!! I had to get used to the art style but once I did I couldn't put the books down.
The story takes place in a faux-European-ish medieval fantasy world with princesses and kings and the like. Nothing really makes that much logical sense but the author keeps you on the edge of your seat with what will happen next. The faces of all the characters are extremely stylized but her backgrounds and costuming is gorgeous.
If you're looking for some distracting fairy-tale-ish fluff, this is the series for you!
Randomly plucked this from my massive tbr pile last night to read out of pure boredom and WOW. I loved this manga SO much. The story was original and the characters were so cute and AH. I will admit that, at times, the scene changes were a bit hard to follow and some of the characters looked nearly IDENTICAL so it was hard to decipher what was going on. BUT Nicole and Jed were so adorable together and it ended on a cliffhanger that basically KILLED me. So I'm looking forward to getting the second volume! Eep!
This was a little confusing to follow at times. I wasn’t always sure which character was supposed to be speaking and some of parts I thought were supposed to be thought bubbles turned out to be actual dialogue even though they were in a bubble different from the rest of the dialogue.
There were also a bunch of characters just thrown at you without real introductions to know them or their motivations.
But I’m still curious to see where this is heading so I will definitely be picking up the next volume.
So, I love the plot here, a boy takes the place of his sister who eloped with a commoner. The husband even figures out the deception early on and goes along with it.
But then everything falls apart. The way everything is drawn it was a NIGHTMARE trying to figure out who was who. So new characters would be introduced and I wouldn't notice for literally pages. Or people would be talking about someone and I'd be like "damn I thought that was you, but I guess not."
