This is the part source for Mel Gibson's "The Passion of Christ." In vivid detail the saint tells us about the mysteries from the Old Testament such as the flood to the very detail of the Crucifixion, and what it was like to be the Mother of God.

Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich was a Roman Catholic Augustinian nun, stigmatic, mystic, visionary and ecstatic.

The daughter of a peasant couple, Anne Catherine Emmerich worked as a seamstress and servant before entering an Augustinian convent in 1802 at age 28. Frail and pious, she became known for her ecstasies, visions of the supernatural and "conversations" with Jesus.

After she became bedridden in 1813 she developed the stigmata -- bleeding wounds corresponding to those of the crucified Christ. A church investigation pronounced the wounds genuine. Ill for many years until her death at age 49, she offered up her suffering for the souls in purgatory. She was beatified on October 3, 2004 by Pope John Paul II.

This review is quite challenging. I know that Mel Gibson's movie about the Passion took details from Emmerick's book, and that was my first impulse to read it. But there's much more.
First, my wife and I read it together and I saw spiritual fruit in her. I noticed that her inner smile grew brighter page after page. And I am very grateful to the one who recommended it to us.
Second, it was an intense, interesting, and surprising read. And it was really well written, so I wanted to know more about the writer. I learned that in 1818, when Anna Katharina was 45 years old, the Italian-German author Clemens Brentano came to visit her. The Brentano family came from Tremezzo on Lake Como, in Italy (a geographical detail that really got me, 'cause I lived there for a while, not long ago).
Brentano was in his forties when they met, and had a stormy, rough past. But Anna Katharina had no doubt, he was the man God had chosen to help her write. She won him over with her spiritual strength and Brentano left women, fame, and literary success behind and stayed with her in Dülmen for six years. A great teamwork. I think that's what overwhelmed me about this book: the intense spiritual cooperation between two very different souls and personalities. Some say that Brentano just wanted to profit, but I don't think so.
And I also picked up a phrase: In God there is no time, in God everything is present.
This is another detail that struck me. It sounds like a meeting point with concepts of physics that we have been thinking about for centuries: time and space and how they work when they are out of visible matter. Okay, they are faith and science, but I fount it enlightening.

Fresh perspective of historical events in scriptures.

This book is a blessing. It embellished the scriptures with a rich human context of events and persons so familiar to us. Places, persons and prophesies become clear. It refreshes devotion of the heart.

Incredible Book

There's no words to capture the immensity of this book. She describes in minute detail many persons, places, things and events of the scriptures. Some places in real life have been discovered because of the visions she's been given, such as Mary's cottage in Turkey. I also felt like I got to know the people in scripture much more closely. It reads like a novel that also vividly describes the settings.

Encountering the mission and Person of Jesus

Such an awe inspiring journey, like no other, into the lives of Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the Apostles in particular, but all Old Testament prophets and patriarchs as well.

Interezting Details

I enjoyed reading the details not in the Gospels even though they are not considered Divinely Inspired like those in the Bible.
There appeared to be many typos and mssing text. The formating with regard to footnotes was very bad and made it difficult to determine the narrative from the footnote.
These matters aside, it brought to life the everyday lives of the people involved in the Life of Christ.

Interesting to say the least

I wanted to read this after hearing that Sister’s visions inspired The Passion movie. Sometimes hard to follow because footnotes were interspersed with the text. All in all, a worthy read.

This is a large book. If you have ever wondered if there was more to Jesus life than what is in the Bible, then this is the book for you.

The most life-changing book I have ever had the privilege to read. So much so that I wish I could give every person in this world their own copy. I am slowly savoring all that I am coming to learn about God and Jesus and Mary and I am grateful for its immense length as I hope to be reading - and savoring - it for a long time to come.
