USA TODAY bestselling author Stephanie Bond was seven years deep into a systems engineering career and pursuing an MBA at night when an instructor remarked that she had a flair for writing and suggested that she submit to academic journals. But Stephanie, a voracious reader, was only interested in writing fiction–more specifically, romantic fiction.

Upon completing her master’s degree and with no formal training in writing (her undergraduate degree is in computer programming), she started writing a romance novel in her spare time. Two years later in 1995 she sold her first manuscript, a romantic comedy, to Harlequin Books.

In 1997, with ten sales under her belt to two publishers, Stephanie left her corporate job to write women’s romantic fiction full-time. In 2011,

Stephanie launched a self-publishing business. Since that time, she has sold more than 1 million copies of her own books. To-date, Stephanie has published over 70 novels and has over 6 million copies of her work in worldwide distribution in numerous languages and formats.

Let's not pretend here. This short story is terrible. TER. Rib. BIBBLE.

I'm, right at this moment, reading "Southern Roads Book1" which follows this one and you might wonder why. Well, it seems the in this case Stephanie Bond cannot write a short story. Because this really wasn't a story. It wasn't really anything which really made it a terrible prequil.

We met the hero and heroine and we learn a bit about their past relationship and their ... struggles. But there wasn't really a story here. Nothing was overcome or learned. Stuff just sort of falls into place around a natural disaster. Literally, this was like a 3rd or 4th subplot, or a prologue, it was no sort of stand alone ANYTHING.

I'm nearly without words to explain how I literally cannot categorize it. It just is a really really terrible short story because there isn't really a story here.

I read this very quickly so I'm not sure that I would warn you off taking 10 minutes of your time to skim through this, because if you want to, you want to. But this book is a bit like unwrapping a gift to find an empty box inside, and then not understanding what you missed because clearly someone wrapped the empty box for a reason, but you just don't get it.

I'm hoping Bond does a better job with the full-length novel that follows. If not, I'll come on here and tell y'all.

This is a short prequel to the Southern Roads series, where a tornado all but wipes the town of Sweetness, Georgia, off the map. The series, Baby, Drive South, Baby, Come Home, and Baby, Don't Go, chronicles the efforts of the Armstrong brothers to rebuild the town they love.

The story opens with Emory on his way home to Sweetness, on a very short leave from the army. He desperately misses his girlfriend Shelby and is determined to ask her to marry him. The biggest obstacle is her father, who is equally determined to keep Shelby safely in Sweetness. And then there's poor Shelby, who loves Emory and wants to marry him, but doesn't want to hurt her father.

I felt bad for Emory, who did everything right. He saved up for a ring, has solid plans for his future, and even went to Shelby's dad to ask for his blessing. But that stubborn old man doesn't want to let go of Shelby. When Emory takes his proposal public, he sort of puts his foot in his mouth, which causes Shelby's pride to kick in and she sends him away. I ached for his pain, as he fled to his boyhood sanctuary of the town water tower.

I ached for Shelby too, as she was caught between a rock and a hard place. She immediately regrets the things she said, but can't go after him right away, because of issues at the grocery store. She also needs to be honest with her father about her wants and needs.

When Emory spots the tornado from his place on the tower, his first thoughts are for Shelby and the town's safety. My heart was in my throat at his dangerous predicament and I held my breath until I was sure he was safe. The intensity of his fears for Shelby leapt off the page. My heart melted as Emory says all the things he didn't say to Shelby when he proposed while he's trying to dig out the ruins of the grocery store. I loved her response, and that of her father. I loved seeing all the townspeople pull together to give them a special wedding day in spite of the devastation.

Short with no substance. Not really enough to get me interested in the series, not enough to make me interested in the characters, but worst of all, nothing was really resolved.

Super short story — hardly any build-up of conflict at all, and then kind of a pat solution. The heroine must choose between her father, who wants her to stay in a dead-end tiny town, and the man she loves, who is in the military, who wants to take the heroine away to a better town, and who will probably be moved all over the country to help with that goal. The three characters fight over this, each of them stubborn in their own right, without really resolving anything, and then a tornado tears the town a new one, and it's the hero's quick thinking that saves everyone in town.

There is nothing like the threat of death to a loved one to make everyone suddenly so willing to compromise and consider other viewpoints. Deus ex machina threatening to bring in deus ex mortem — problem solved!

It's a nice introduction to the series, though; it sets things up nicely so that good-looking, capable men can be heroes in their own books as they help to rebuild the little town. Hopefully, their stories will have more of a build-up in the conflict and resolution end of things.

Loved it. A Prequel-Short to a series called Southern Roads. A great introduction to the town of Sweetness and its population of 952 people. This story takes place 10 years before the series, and is about Emory, and the day he went home, on a 5 day leave, to propose to Shelby. A Tornado has different plans for this special day, and leaves the Town completely destroyed.

This short had it all. Love, suspense, danger, friendship, a happy ending, and a cliff hanger. What more can you ask for from a Short Story? It was 5 stars, especially for a free download. Best one I've read all night. :D

"Baby, I'm Yours" is a very short introduction to the 'Southern Roads' series.
Soldier Emory Maxwell, on an unexpected leave, returns to his hometown, Sweetness, Georgia, with just one goal in mind - to propose to Shelby Moon, the girl he has loved since second grade.
His visit is a surprise and nothing goes the way he expects - not only doesn't he get Shelby, the entire town is facing disaster.
Because it is so short it lacks depth and skims the surface of the plot most of the time.
There's not much more to it but the final third is very well done.
I felt that it didn't quite work as a prequel and haven't decided whether or not to continue the series.

this was a nice start to a new series for me. This was my first time reading Stephanie Bond & I enjoyed this book. The angst of the pull between 2 people she loved had Shelby torn in 2. But with the tornado bearing down on them , she realizes that she knows what her decision is going to be if they get out of this mess. For a very short novella the author packs it full of feelings, happiness, sadness, fear, terror & elation are all through the book. I can't wait to read the next books in the series.

Short and sweet

This is a short, sweet story that takes place in a small town in Georgia. Shelby and Emory have known each other since second grade, but Shelby’s emotions are split between her love for Emory and her loyalty/love for her father. Add in a tornado that devastates the small town and you have the makings of a good story. This one doesn’t disappoint. It’s short, sweet, with a HEA that satisfies.

Really good prequel novella about a guy home on leave from the Army and the girl he wants to marry. His obstacles are her relationship with her father, her father's unwillingness to let her go and the store he built and plans to give to her. This is a sweet story that has an HEA but also has a lot of adventure packed into it with a cat 5 tornado that rips through Sweetness destroying the majority of the town and much of the mountainous countryside.

A short, but complete, story. It tells the story of the tornado that destroys the town of Sweetness, and sets up the setting for the rest of the series.

Emory, on leave for 5 days, is returning to his small hometown to ask his best friend and lover, Shelby, to marry him. I like the friends to lovers romance trope, and I like marriage-minded heroes. I find them to be rare in the romance genre. Therefore, I was predisposed to like this.

I appreciated the conflict that Shelby had between wanting to please her father and wanting to live her life because I could completely relate to it. Unfortunately, Shelby seemed pretty bland in much of the short story.

It was inevitable that a marriage proposal must be made twice: the first time was for practice, which usually entails mortification on the part of the proposee, and the second time was for real, which the heroine usually accepts at this point. While the past few books I've read usually went the route of Jane Austen's Mr. Darcy (i.e. insult the heroine), where Emory went wrong was in failing to propose with Shelby's happiness in mind, which I found to be an interesting turn of affairs.

The catastrophe that occurred to Sweetness, which took a bit of a stretch to suspend my disbelief, actually ended up making me roll my eyes when Emory started worrying about the fate of Sweetness and Shelby. I'm not quite certain why, but at that point, my battle to suspend my disbelief was lost.

In the end, however, I finished this short story with an interest in continuing the series. I just knew that his buddy was going to require a story, and I am willing to take the bait.

Emory Maxwell and Shelby Moon have been inseparable since second grade and childhood sweethearts ever since. Emory joined the Army and Shelby stayed behind in the rural town of Sweetness, Georgia to work in her father's grocery store.

Emory is back home on leave for five days and intends to propose to Shelby despite the tensions in their relationship regarding her loyalty towards her father to stay in the town that offers no prospects for the future. But they've been together for so long; she won't say no, will she?

Charming albeit corny novella. It wasn't long enough for me to care about the h/h. Emory loves Shelby so much that he's easily frustrated with her unwillingness to choose him over her father, even though she wants to. She doesn't want to hurt either man and wants to remain unconfrontational. Not realistic in my opinion. It takes an F5 tornado to make everyone realize their mistakes.

Seeing as this was a prequel to the Southern Roads trilogy, I didn't expect this to be lengthy, but for me it fell short of making me itch to read said trilogy and see the Armstrong brothers (Porter Armstrong is Emory's Army buddy and best friend) rebuild the destroyed town of Sweetness. I may still do it one day.

I've had this for a while now, ever since Jennifer Estep mentioned in a newsletter/blog post that she had read it or its subsequent book and enjoyed it. Having trouble sleeping means that I wind up reading during the awake times, and I grabbed this one after being inspired to read the author in a Featured Author Challenge in a group I am in.

Since this is listed as a prequel short story, I went in knowing it would be brief. However, the author sidestepped my chief complaint about novellas or short stories, because this book had a logical and fulfilling plot! When I finished it, my appetite for more of these characters was whetted, but I didn't feel cheated that this wasn't the full story. We had a happily ever after, but it also set the stage for the subsequent books in the series. Some reviews stated that the book was too wordy, but I have to disagree. The wordiness of the book lent to my satisfaction because we were able to connect better with the characters. All in all, it was an enjoyable way for me to spend an hour or so, and I would go back and finish the series out, based on this introduction!

This was a free read from Kindle. I’m so glad it was.

This is listed as a .5 in the Southern Roads trilogy, which is set in Sweetness, Georgia, and sets the stage for the next three books.

Emory Maxwell, on a five day leave from the Army, heads back to Sweetness to ask his long time girlfriend, Shelby, to marry him. They’ve been having their ups and downs (more down lately) and Emory decides asking her to marry him will fix the issue.

Unfortunately, when he gets back home, he finds marriage is not necessarily going to fix the issue.

Quickly, the town is hit by a tornado and Emory is determine to pull Shelby out of the rubble alive and tell her all the things he’s meant to say.

Of course, everything gets tidied up pretty neatly in the last chapter and set up the first book in the series.

I understand why the author wrote it and I also see why it was free. This definitely left me wishing she had made Emory and Shelby’s story a more in depth novella or a full length book. Just felt too rushed to me.

This said, I’ve got my copies of the next two books ready.

Baby, I'm Yours is the short story prequel to Stephanie Bond's Southern Roads series that introduces the town of Sweetness Georgia and sets the stage for the trilogy. This is a freebie at both BarnesandNoble.com and Amazon.com and is extremely short at only 48 pages.

It honestly wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. Even though it was well written, it felt half-assed. The characters had absolutely no time to develop so you'll have a hard time caring what happens to them. For all intents and purposes this should have been a bit longer an featured in a romance anthology. If you do read this, just take it as a sample of the trilogy as the main character of the first book Baby, Drive South is featured as a supporting character in this one. I intend to give the trilogy a try, but suggest you read this only if you are stuck in an airport with absolutely nothing else.

My Thoughts:
This is the prequel for the Southern Roads series and we get to met Sweetness, a small town in Georgia that looks to be stuck in time.

Emory Maxwell and Shelby Moon were childhood friends and now are dating, but since Emory joined the Army and Shelby started working for her father in a groceries store, their relationship started showing signs of breaking.

Emory takes a leave for fives to ask Shelby hand in marriage and that’s when all hell break lose. A tornado swiped through Sweetness and destroyed everything but thanks to Emory no life was harmed and this nature event helped mend the relationship.

I liked Emory and this story was to short, it could be a full out book that it would be a best way to meet the characters. I understand Shelby way of thinking but her father seams to be on a different century and he was actually making his daughter miserable, but only him couldn’t see it.

Poignant short story of Love surviving and triumphing in the face of a natural disaster.

Sweetness, Georgia is a tiny mountain town north of Atlanta, Georgia that is the hometown of Emory Maxwell and Shelby Moon - a young couple who have always loved each other. However, with Emory being in the Armed Services away from home, and Shelby at home in Sweetness, their relationship has been tested. In fact, the last time Emory talked to Shelby on the phone, they got into an argument over Shelby's responsibilities and Shelby hung up on Emory. So, with 5 days of unexpected leave, he decides to head home and propose to Shelby even though he knows her father is not likely to approve. Little does Emory know that an irate and controlling father is going to be the least of his problems.

Will Shelby agree to marry Emory, or will she do as her father wishes and stay behind in Sweetness? Will Shelby and Emory's relationship survive when a horrifying natural disaster in Sweetness?

An ebook prequel to Ms. Bond's new contemporary romance series featuring the Armstrong brothers returning to their town of Sweetness, Georgia. Porter Armstrong, hero of Baby, Drive South, makes an appearance in this novella.

Emory is determined to ask Shelby to marry him despite not having a plan, not asking her father for his blessing, or not getting along with Shelby's father period. What made this story emotional for me is the timing of when I read it -- the destructive tornadoes in Alabama had just happened -- so to see an entire town literally taken off the map and read various townspeople's emotional reaction to the storm and its aftermath was unexpected. I do wonder if we'll meet Emory and Shelby again, perhaps in the final book of the series, because we last saw them driving out of Sweetness as husband and wife.

Honestly, I was expecting this story to be awful based on other reviews I read. But I thought it was well written and well formatted. It did exactly what it was supposed to do… whet my appetite for the upcoming series.

I’ve gotta say, this was the best short story I’ve ever had the pleasure to read. And even though it was short (8 chapters), I felt like I knew the main characters well enough. So much so, I felt what they felt... my emotions were everywhere just like theirs were. Make sure to have the Kleenex handy! Especially for chapter 7.

Overall, it was a truly sweet and moving story. The shortness of it worked well for me, meaning I can get the ‘feel good’ mojo from it quickly in the future. Always a plus since I read so slow.

Really quick, really unnecessary. Good palate cleanser. I've liked Ms. Bond's work in the past and decided to give this short a read. I should have saved my energy and I'm glad I didn't buy it. This is for completists only.

In this prequel for the Southern Roads trilogy we meet Emory Maxwell, a soldier on a 5day leave from Afghanistan decides to take the bull by the horns and ask his Shelby to marry him. Well Emory and Shelby seem to have a sticking point that involves her father and the dwindling town of Sweetness that they live in.

As mentioned before this short wasn't good - it wasn't bad - it just was.....unnecessary. I'm not intrigued enough to follow through with the first full length book of the series.

I will admit that the lack of another edition in the Body Movers series is tainting my judgement here...if it had been a Body Movers book it would have received more stars. I LOVE the Body Movers books.

This novella is a prequel to Stephanie Bond's new Southern Roads trilogy and introduces us to the town of Sweetness, Georgia. I think this length story is hard to judge, character development has to happen quicker and story lines need to wrap up faster than may be natural. I see potential in this series and will be looking for the 1st full novel in the series "Baby, Drive South".

This was a free download! So if you're interested get reading now!
