Award Winning Author, Opal Carew writing as Amber Carew
Can Vanessa risk falling in love with a man obsessed with a fantasy woman -- even though that woman is her?
Vanessa always wanted to be Cinderella. Taking the opportunity to attend a lavish masquerade ball -- even if she wasn't invited --was just too delightful an opportunity to resist. When Nicholas Powers dragged her into his arms for the most explosive kiss she ever experienced, she floated on cloud nine. It is a fantasy night she'll never forget, even though she knows she would never have a chance with him. Especially when she winds up working for him as a temp and sees him obsessing about finding his Cinderella... a fantasy she can never fulfill.
Nick had never felt such fiery passion as he did when he held the dazzling beauty in his arms. She aroused him as no other woman could, then she ran away with his heart, leaving behind only an antique glass slipper earring. If only the mask hadn’t hidden her features. Knowing no other woman could ever make him feel the way she did, he swears to find her and make her his. Why, then, does his little spark of a secretary make his pulse quicken?
I got this book in the 7-book boxed set, Love in Disguise.
What to say, what to say. It wasn't the worst story I've read. It's the typical Cinderella story, so I fully expected it to be cheesy. I could've dealt with it just being cheesy. Instead, it drove me crazy and there were several times during the whole 11 chapters that I wanted to just give up on it.
Vanessa is your modern day Cinderella. Nick is her Prince Charming. Her best friend, Rachel, is his secretary. Nick is throwing a costume/masquerade party at his house. When one of the female guests calls to say she can't make it, Rachel gives the woman's invitation and her Cinderella costume to Vanessa. So Vanessa goes to the party and there's the instant magnetism between Vanessa and Nick, who is dressed as Prince Charming. So they're interrupted during a passionate kiss and she flees, somehow losing one of her glass slipper earrings in her frantic escape. A couple days later, Vanessa gets a call that Rachel has been put on bed rest for the remainder of her pregnancy and Vanessa is asked to fill in for her. Of course, Vanessa doesn't know Nick is the Prince Charming she kissed at the party until her first day at work. He asks her to help him find the mysterious woman whose earring he now has. So they dance around each other for awhile before getting together. He figures out she's his Cinderella. There's the obvious happily ever after.
It sounds good, right? Vanessa drove me batshit crazy! She's all meek and timid and ya know, totally lacking in confidence because of her wretched stepmother and two stepsisters treating her poorly when she was a kid. I MAYBE could have dealt with her timidity and self doubt, if it hadn't been for the several occasions she suddenly became this totally confident seductress who was sexually confident and all that. It didn't sit right. In general, she was just WAY TOO whiny for my tastes. She was also a MAJOR snob, but kind of in reverse - a snob AGAINST wealthy people. It was irritating. Then you had Nick who was just forgettable to me. Nothing about him made him stand out for me.
The writing drove me batshit crazy also. There weren't a bunch (if any) typos, which is a major turn off for me, so kudos there! But it read like a fairy tale. Like a children's book. And there was SO MUCH repetition about their feelings and her insecurities that I ended up skimming most of it.
I've read a couple modern romances that are a sort of twist on an old fairy tale and still enjoyed them. This one, however, I didn't enjoy at all. If you're a big fairy tale, it might be absolutely wonderful for you though.
The heroine was a little too wishy-washy for her own good. The hero, Nicholas Powers, was too dominant for my own good. I like alpha men but come on.
The story was good. The Cinderella theme did well. Vanessa was the perfect choice in that role due to her own upbringing. Over all, I liked the story but the characters were a little bland. Vanessa spent more time acting like a teenaged girl meeting Justin Bieber than she did a strong, adult, independent woman that she should have been.
Her best friend, Rachel, interested me more than she did. Not by much but still.
Overall, I liked this book but it could have been better. The book just went on and on. It was the same thing over and over again too which is frustrating.
This stand alone short story is a modern day fairy tale romance come true.
Vanessa gets a once in a lifetime opportunity to become Cinderella for an evening she crashes her best friends boss’ masked ball. Nicholas is the rich and powerful host of the ball and when he kisses Cinderella, he becomes obsessed with finding out her identity, even though he has a red hot attraction to his new secretary.
This is a sensual and steamy fairy tale romance that is painted with such vivid detail that the reader is left with a happy heart. The conflict and emotional turmoil is believable and the reader can easily relate to the captivating characters.
I found this heart-warming tale to be a tale of personal and emotional growth that leaves the reader believing in Happily Ever After.
Such a horribly whiny and insecure heroine that I couldn't make it past chapter 5. Yawn-worthy hero. If you're having trouble falling asleep at night, I guarantee this book will put you right to sleep with dull characters and dull writing.
So annoyed I forked out $3.99 for this on smashwords.
The blurb reads much better than the actual book. What saves this book from being a 1star rating is the fact that there were barely any typos - much better than other self-published stuff you see out there.
