A beloved character from the mind of Astrid Lindgren of Pippi Longstocking fame. Emil is much-preferred Swedish version of Dennis the Menace -- he's always getting into mischief, but just in minor ways that do not harm others like Dennis does. He sends his sister up a flagpole, head stuck in a soup bowl, etc.

I was given this book as a gift from the family who owns the farmstead (Katthult in Småland, Sweden) where the movie based on this book was filmed. I was lucky enough to spend a few nights on the farm. I then gave my copy of the book to my godson, Ellwood, the son of my dear friends I met in Sweden the year prior.

If you have a little boy, always running into trouble, THIS is the book to read for him. Old fashioned, good and thoughtful, perfect read if you want to read something for your grandchild. All of Lindgren books are reat but this one stands out for me as the one to read for your troubled grandsons after a day full of childhood disasters. It will melt your heart and soothe them into the peaceful sleep knowing that others were a complete disasters before them :)

I had a lot of books by Astrid Lindgren when I was little. I read the same books to my daughter. My oldest grandson was 4 last time we went to Sweden and visited Juni backen. It's a wonderful place for kids where you can visit Villa Villerkulla, Pippi's crazy house. On "The Story Train" you fly over many worlds that Astrid created. She wrote so many amazing books about different characters. https://www.junibacken.se/

I look forward to visiting Sweden again so my youngest grandson gets to go to Junibacken.

Kirjan lopussa lukijoille paljastuu, kuka kumma nämä taivastelevat säkeet on oikein kirjoittanut.

Eemeli on vienyt enenevässä määrin lapsieni sydämen hyväntahtoisena koltiaisena.

A "greatest hits" of sorts from the Emil books, with added poems which seem quite badly translated.

I really wanted to like this book as it was a gift for my children (and as you might imagine I've read many books to them over the years). I actually found this book quite difficult to read for 2 reasons. The language itself felt a bit strange - like it had been literally translated without recognising how modern English speakers speak or read which made the prose somewhat cumbersome and unrealistic both as an English and a present-day reader. I've read many translated books before (as my family is a mix of nationalities) that flow better than this or that don't feel quite so very "old fashioned" as a result. The short stories also lacked pace (children like pace as well as a good story) and my children got visibly bored as they tried to follow stories where Emil's activities weren't nearly so naughty as the author's prose would have us believe. I'm glad that others enjoyed the book, but with the best will in the world I wouldn't recommend this to my friends. On the positive side, the book is without doubt beautifully illustrated.

A delightful introduction to one of Astrid Lindgren’s most endearing characters. The success of the Emil books stands upon the tripod of 1) well shaped characterization, 2) the natural voice of the narration and 3) an exceptional sense of comedy. I only pity those who cannot read it in the original Swedish.

Between painting his sister purple (typhus), locking his father in the toilet, and many other hysterical adventures, Emil was the brother I always wished I had if I were growing up in Sweden!
