As a wildlife rehabilitator in southeast Louisiana, Pamela Wells has dealt with her fair share of wild animals, but her reclusive life is forever changed when she meets an elusive former soldier named Daniel Phillips. Sent to Pamela's wildlife sanctuary as part of his parole requirements, Daniel and Pamela quickly clash until Daniel's troubled past unexpectedly comes to light. After serving in Iraq, Daniel suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. Pamela tries to help ease his condition by introducing him to the healing power of animals. Daniel begins to find peace, and an unexpected kindred spirit in Pamela. Fearing one day she will be forced to give up her beloved sanctuary, Pamela confides in Daniel about her debilitating health. United by their misfortunes, the relationship turns romantic. Just when Pamela has found someone to love and share her burdens, Daniel skips town, crushing her heart. Suddenly Pamela finds herself alone and in a desperate situation. She has no choice but to turn to a ruthless Louisiana attorney, Bob Patrick, for help. Bob promises Pamela financial security in exchange for a life as his obedient wife. When Daniel unexpectedly returns, Bob is not willing to give Pamela up. Like an ensnared bird, Pamela struggles to free herself of her cruel capture. The fight may prove deadly, but Daniel is willing to do anything to save her. Can two broken souls eventually find happiness or, like the broken wings of a dove, will they be forever kept from reaching the heights of heaven.

Daniel said to Pamela:
"Despite what you may think, you and I are a lot alike, Pamela. We are both birds afraid to fly in case we should fall and break our wings. But broken wings heal. And every bird must fly, even if it's only for a brief moment. But in that moment, they get their chance to spread their wings and try to touch the sky."

4.5 stars.

Wow, such a pleasant surprise! I was waiting for months to read Broken Wings and it was so worthwhile!

Pamela Wells is a permitted wildlife rehabber and the owner of Second Chance Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. She pampers injured animals to put them back into their natural habitat. Pamela suffers from a chronic disease called lupus. Her immune system has trouble telling the difference between her body and a foreign body, like a virus. It attacks her joints (causes pain and swelling) and can destroy major organs, like her kidneys, liver, lungs, and heart. But she is not broken, only bruised. Pamela doesn't fear a possible death sentence but much more the loss of control over her life. Lupus had robbed her of her marriage, her chance at motherhood, her health and, at times, her sanity.

Enter Daniel Phillips. He was busted for assault and battery, and therefore his sentence was one hundred hours of community service. He's assigned to help Pamela. Daniel suffers from a serious case of PTSD since he came back from Iraq about six years ago. He said:

"For someone like me there isn't a forever. Right now is about all I can handle."

At first they didn't get along so well since Mr. Phillips said a few things that didn't appeal to Ms. Wells:

"Only a bored housewife looking to show off her altruistic side to her posh friends would waste her days chasing flea-infested fuzz balls around a makeshift petting zoo."

But don't be afraid. It will get better between these two!

Broken Wings is NOT a steamy and passionate love story. But it is warm. It is sweet. It is heartfelt. And it seems that the author did pay homage to the wildlife. She did a truly fine job! Pamela doesn't like to socialize, and she finds animals more pleasant than people. Her wildlife center is her safe haven. It was incredibly rewarding to see how Daniel and Pamela helped each other. The both of them had issues to opening up to people again:

"I guess the more wounds you have, the deeper the scar tissue you have to cut through. Makes people like you and me impossible to get to know." He paused and let his lips graze her cheek. "But I think we are making progress," he whispered. "Progress?" "I think you're beginning to trust me. Tonight you showed me a side of yourself that I suspect not a lot of people have seen."

Ms. Weis does a fine job in portraying two scarred and damaged people. They are very likeable and believable. I'm not a PTSD expert but I felt that Daniel's disease was realistically written, and I'd say the same about Pamela's chronic disease lupus. Daniel's panic attacks felt very palpable and vivid. Being surrounded by all those fuzzy balls is helping him to calm down. He finds his inner balance and peace. Again. After a while it becomes his little sanctuary. At a certain point Pamela had attached herself to some place deep inside Daniel's heart, a place he had not dared to visit for a very long time. He just knew that his life would never be the same.

I appreciated the thoughtful dialogs. The author mixed them with a nice touch of humor. Furthermore, I so adored Carol! She is Pamela's best friend and such a funny and dear person. Actually, the cast of secondary characters is very good too. Admittedly, Pamela's ex is such a self-centered, conceited bastard. With that said, he was the cause for a bit of drama that was woven throughout the plot. Naturally having two "sick" main characters enhanced the drama as well. Additionally, the ending was pretty upsetting and heart-wrenching.

Reading this story makes you feel humble again, and you don't take anything for granted anymore. Broken Wings is beautifully written. It's a very satisfying read, and if you're on the lookout for a "new" author then I strongly advice you to give Ms. Weis a try!

I'd like to conclude my review by saying:

Yes, she can fly now. It's time to let her have her chance to spread her wings and try to touch the sky.

** I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

I admit I'm a sucker for anything Southern: food, accents, cities....men – not necessarily in that order. So throw me a book that's based in Louisiana and I'm yours. Make it a book based in Louisiana with one of the characters having a lot of bad boy qualities and attitude in the mix? Um, yeah. I won't be coming up for air until said book is finished.

Broken Wings is a touching story about a woman’s love for wild animals and her struggle to keep the wildlife sanctuary she runs for them afloat, all the while trying to resist temptation with the so called thug that is volunteering at her place.

I was hooked right from the very first paragraph. Pamela is a strong, independent woman who hates asking for help, yet is still under the thumb of her ex-husband when it comes to keeping her wildlife sanctuary up and running. You can feel the love Pamela has for her critters radiating off the page the way Weis writes her.

Of course, it didn’t hurt that she had Daniel stripping in the hot Louisiana sun within the first couple of pages either. Daniel is the perfect leading man with his attitude and troubled past. You can’t help but let him into your heart (and fantasies, ahem) just as Pamela soon found herself doing.

Bob. Oh, what can I say about asshole Bob? He was a great character to hate. And that’s all I feel for the lying, cheating, manipulating bastard. Hate. Nuff said.

But as much as I enjoyed the two main characters, my favourite would have to be Carol. She was hilarious with her one liners and just the kind of (somewhat) smutty friend I like to read about. She was awesome.

I loved the conflict and uncertainty in the book, however I felt that maybe the end was rushed a bit. However, it is still a beautifully written love story and one that you should check out if you’re looking for a new author to try.

"EDUCATIONAL, HEARTWARMING, COMPELLING!"

Pamela Wells is a wildlife rehabber, who devotes her time and energy in giving animals a second chance in life, her facility is the world she lives in. She often worries about who will care for her sanctuary if her health should take a turn for the worst due to lupus. Daniel Phillips is a former soldier, who returned from Iraq with post traumatic stress disorder and is sent to Pamela's facility as part of his parole. Two different people struggle everyday with disease and disability, at first they clash, then their hearts are joined together. Through the healing power of animals, two lives begin to change as they share the same peace and love they give to animals with themselves. The drama becomes intense after Pamela and Daniel share their love, before he skips town. Pamela has no choice but to turn to her ruthless former husband for help. Does Daniel return, and will the fight for Pamela become deadly? Who will survive, and will Pamela lose what she loves the most? I highly recommend this captivating novel to all romance lovers, who enjoy inspiring stories, combined with drama and suspense. Alexandrea Weis uses her expertise as a wildlife rehabber with a love for animals, combined with the compassion she has acquired from Nursing in creating a Masterpiece of love, struggle, and healing. This heartfelt story is a tale of one woman's struggle for happiness, set in rural Louisiana with genuine characters who become unforgettable, long after this book is closed. The author portrays conflict, trials-and-tribulations of illness, and how the little things in life have the greatest value. This engaging story that's filled with drama, made for the Movie screen, will tug at the heartstrings page-after-page. The reader will laugh, cry, and take a new look on life of what they have, but never realized how special it is! "BROKEN WINGS" is as fascinating as MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE, as deeply moving as A WALK TO REMEMBER, and as dramatic as THE NOTEBOOK.

I got this as an Amazon freebie a while ago and when I re-read the synopsis I thought I was in for a boring book. Boy, was I wrong! This is about Pamela, a wild-life rehabilitator, who is dealing with lupus. One day, Daniel, who is on parole, comes to her house to start his community service for her wild-life center. Daniel sees how much help she needs so he offers his services to help fix her roof. From there Pamela and Daniel develop a friendship where their bond seems to grow into something more. Unfortunately, Pamela's ex-husband, Bob, tries to meddle with their relationship and forces Daniel with no option but to leave Pamela. Pamela has no one else to turn to so she goes back to Bob. However, Daniel comes back and now has try to rescue Pamela from Bob's grasp. I wasn't expecting much from this book and I just wanted to get it off my to be read list. At first reading this book, I was kind of bored with it but this book ended up surprised me. It was filled with drama and angst. I kept wanting to scream at Pamela so she could finally let Daniel in her life and give him a second chance. I hated Bob with a passion. I couldn't understand how Pamela could have been with this man for so long, know what an asshole he is, and then go back to him. Although I did get that she was in a time of need and alone, I thought she could have done without him. Even if Daniel didn't come back she should have let Carol help her because Carol was a way better option. Thankfully, Daniel did come back and showed Pamela what a huge mistake she was making. I was so emotional, this book had me in tears by the end of it. I'm just happy everybody got what they deserved. 4 stars!

Broken Wings by Alexandrea Weis is a wonderful love story! Pamela is a take charge woman who hates asking for help from her ex-husband. She is witty and strong willed and I fell in love with her. Beneath all of her tough exterior she has such a warm heart. It is obvious every time she is caring for one of her many animals.

Daniel was tall dark and handsome. He was a little moody and he could hold his own in a fight. He may have had some issues, brought on by his PTSD, but he has a huge heart. When he was helping Pamela care for the little animals I was hooked. Later, when he is still caring from Pamela from afar I was really hoping he would return to her before it was too late.

Bob was a great antagonist. He was a drunk, cheating, violent man. He deserves everything that he gets in this story. He is so controlling and when it seems like he will get Pamela back into his clutches I was just so upset. I think the ending to his story was very good, and he definitely reaped what he sowed.

I loved reading about Carol and Ian! They added such great comedy into this story. Carol was so funny, always pushing Pamela at Daniel. Poor Ian, I almost felt bad for him when I wasn't laughing. I also loved reading about Val. She was an interfering lady, with a great heart.

This was a love story filled with conflict. Pamela and Daniel's relationship is rocky and the outcome is uncertain at times. I thought the ending was so perfect, though. It was a great read. I think I will be going back and seeing what else Alexandrea Weis has to offer.

Thank you Alex for sending me this novel. Broken Wings has a different focus than her Nicole Beauvoir series which is animal rehabbing.

Synopsis:

Pamela runs a wild life rehab center just outside of New Orleans. Carol her friend of the family helps to run the business. It is totally dependent on donations and goodwill of others. Also the support of her ex-husband Bob. A surprise helper shows up to work off his community service. Daniel is vet from the Iraq war. The rehab center becomes a place of healing for him. Pamela has pushed men away since her ex has left. Will Daniel get through Pamela’s line of defense? Can he show her that she doesn’t need to be dependent on Bob?

My Thoughts:

Another great novel by Alexandrea Weis? This story follows an animal rehabber and her work. The story is sprinkled with facts about the work of the animal rehabber, and what it takes to run this kind of facility. The wild animals that reside there. Lastly most importantly the kind of love to take care of these animals. You might be surprised by a visit of some characters you from her previous series Val Easterling and Lance Beauvoir.

I felt that the novel started a bit slowly but picked up the pace after fifty pages. The story is told well. I sometimes find myself impatient with wanting the characters to move faster than the pace of the story. While I am impatient occasionally I find myself satisfied in the end.

to me

Broken Wings written by Alexandrea Weis and published by World Castle Publishing is a must read Four out of Five!

The reader who loves animals, loves Louisiana, and loves romance will take pleasure in reading Broken Wings. Although there are no surprises in the plot or the outcome with the lovers, the novel is well-written and worth reading.

Alexandrea Weis creates well-developed characters the reader can feel for and root for. Pamela Wells, an animal rehab specialist, and Daniel Phillips, a war veteran, are like the animals Pamela rescues, they need rescuing in their own ways. Both Weis’ main characters have their foibles. Pamela suffers with lupus and a memory of a miserable first marriage, while Daniel suffers with PTDS from the Iraq war. How could these two ever make it?

With Weis’ creative use of Louisiana as the backdrop for the setting of the novel, the reader is immersed in the relevant events of the day: BP Oil spill, Hurricane Katrina, and the Iraq War. Throw in the conflict with her ex-husband, the reader is compelled to finish the novel.

Broken Wings is a well written, enjoyable romance novel that is worth the read.

I highly recommend this book.
Broken Wings by Alexandrea Weis is the kind of book you cant put down, and not think of it. It keeps you wanting more...
Broken Wings is a story about a woman named Pamela Wells who is struggling to keep her wildlife rescue center going. She loves the animals she cares for so much that she doesnt mind having to ask her mean, manipulating ex husband for help.
Soon she meets Daniel Phillips, a man sent to help her as part of his parole requirement. At first their personalities clash, but as they begin to spend more and more time together, they realize that they have fallen for eachother....
I dont like to ruin my reviews with too much details of the story, but all I can say is that Alexandrea Weis did an awesome job with this book. The characters are very well developed and likeable...You will find yourself rooting for Pamela and Daniel's romance, the wildlife sanctuary and hating her ex husband...

*The love scenes maybe a bit too intense for Young Adult readers and there is some profanity used in the book so I would recommend this book for adult readers.

Wonderfully paced emotion and romance makes this one of the best books I've read in a long time. Pamela Wells isn't some empty headed do gooder ; she's a woman living for the animals she cares for at her makeshift shelter. She thinks she's got everything figured out and in its place but something is missing.
Irritation and romance come in the form of a hot tempered bartender assigned to community service. But Daniel is more than he seems. I did have the initial feeling that this was going to be a clichéd relationship, but I had to change my mind after the first two chapters. Truly an engaging, emotional journey for these two.
One of the most memorable character's is not human : Rodney the raccoon was simply adorable and completely believable. His personality was better than. Pamela ex-husband, Bob. :)
Great book.

BROKEN WINGS was a very sweet and warm love story of two people who had many emotional wounds and had a hard time opening up. The two come together after having some conflict and fall in love. Pamela had a love for animals helping them return to their natural habitat. Daniel was the rougher type, charged with assault and battery having to complete community service. The author did a great job describing PTSD as well as developing the characters. Ms. Weis kept my attention right from the first page. I couldn’t put the book down. I would highly recommend this book.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
Pamela Wells is the main character of the book, and she owns and works at a wildlife rehab center. She loves animals and is very wary of people. She ends up working with the convicts that need community service. This is how she meets Daniel Phillips. Both of them have very emotional pasts and physical issues that keep them distanced from other people. This is actually what helps them connect. This is a touching love story. I read this book in one sitting, as it was a very good read. The characters in this book are well developed, even some of the not as important side characters.

VERDICT

Good book! I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a good romance.

This is one of those books where you see how broken both of the main characters. The author has helped the reader understand how the main characters got that way. Shoved together the animals and their relationship help them both begin to heal. When Daniel leaves, Pamela is forced to once again seek help from her ex-husband. Can you say controlling? He is the type of character you love to hate. You can’t read this book without hoping that he will get his. Want to know if he does? Read the book.

As the wife of a veteran I was really looking forward to this book since I have first hand experience with the topic. I don't read many romance novels so my opinion may be a little skewed. Broken wings is a light read and would be enjoyed by readers of romance novels. Personally, I was hoping for a little more substance. I was curious how the author would be able to make PTSD work in a romance novel and wasn't overly impressed. However, I applaud her for tackling the subject because it is very misunderstood.

I am really liking this author. As I have enjoyed with her other books, it has a good cast of charactes. (including a few from the Nicci Beauvoir trilogy?. This was not a suspense though, just a romance with a nice couple, the conflicts keeping them apart included illness, money and a really weasily nasty ex husband. I was definitely choked up at the ending and epilogue which could have been coy but was actually a surprise.

Pamela has a bad marriage and the disease Lupus hanging over her. Daniel has PTSD from two tours over seas. Both are trying to keep a wild life rehab facility on its feet while overcoming their own issues. They find out that only together can they find peace and happiness. I was really getting into this book until half way through. At that point the story took a left turn that ruined it for me.
