Tawny Stokes has always been a writer. From an early age, she’d spin tales of serial killers in love, vampires taking over the world, and sometimes about fluffy bunnies turned bunnicidal maniacs. An honour student in high school, with a penchant for math and English, you’d never know it by the foot high blue Mohawk and Doc Martens, which often got her into trouble. No longer a Mohawk wearer, Tawny still enjoys old school punk rock, trance, zombie movies, teen horror films, and fluffy bunnies. She lives in Canada with her fantastical daughter, two cats, and spends most of her time creating new stories for teens.

Sounds a bit like Jennifer's body, Right?
Wrong.
I can say that once I started reading this book, I wasn't reminded of that movie at all. The author did an amazing job making this book entirely unique. I really did LOVE Static. It totally rocked my socks off! No pun intended. In my opinion It held the same kind of appeal as The Modern Faerie Tales by Holly Black. Made for the more mature YA audience because of mild drug use, language, and not-very consensual sex. It is a fast-paced, deliciously dark and gritty tale. Although I found no connection between Salem and myself, I loved her as a character. Not your average Heroine. She just seemed real to me.
I have always really loved the emotionally damaged, constantly brooding bad boy type. Put him in a novel and Its an instant win for me. And that is exactly what Trevor was. I wanted to pull that boy from the pages and keep him forever.
This book is a great read. Just like the characters in it, It is just real. In my high school, life was a lot like Static-minus the demons. Kids fourteen and up were sexually active, using drugs and what have you. But in most YA fiction life isn't portrayed like that; everything for the most part is unrealistically perfect. That is one reason why I loved this book so much. Even if I hadn't gotten this book free for review I still would be hugging this book to my chest like I am now.
I loved the new take on demons too. How they used music to seduce their listeners. The whole plot was truly creative.
I'm thinking about buying a paperback copy to giveaway here, on the blog, so my readers can see just how awesome this book is. The overview doesn't do the book justice. I suggest you check this book out. It is ONLY $2.99 on Amazon!!!

I'm not a huge reader of YA books. I've noticed that some (not all) authors dumb down their writing for a younger crowd. Authors I love in their mainstream genres will tackle a YA and I wince my through it.

Tawny Stokes isn't one of those authors and Static isn't one of those books.

I became sucked into Salem's story immediately. Salem is a regular teenage girl who has a massive crush on a rockband, especially the lead singer Thane. Things do not go according to plan for Salem is giving up her virginity to the musician. Instead she finds herself turned into a half-sucubus demon. Yeah, no vampires, angels or werewolves in this world. Tawny went the naughty root.

And considering that Cambian's feed on sex - there was no sex. Some heart-pounding kissing scenes and bra action but that was it. The budding romance is sweet, the growing pains of her demon half are heart-breaking and Salem is a heroine you just have to love. She doesn't sit on the floor and whine that she's a half-demon. There's no "Woe me? Why me? It's so unfair!" foot stamping attitude. Sure she has the denial...who wouldn't. But she never loses sight of who she is. Even before she was turned, Salem was a strong character. There was none of the usual "Oh I'm an outsider boo-hoo, my teenage life sucks" that I've read in some YA books. She marches to a different drummer and doesn't apologize for that. She's a tough little cookie and I adore her.

Static is a wild ride as Salem deals with her new self, falls for a half-incubus demon named Trevor and tries to figure out how to rid the world of Malice. Not what the usual 17 year old deals with. All of the characters (the heroes, villains and secondary characters) are strong and balance each other well. The story is unique and Tawny's writing is awesomely awesome.

If you're looking for a YA book that's unique with a strong heroine, go no further. It's a book that will appeal to the late-teen crowd and the adult crowd. A good read is a good read. Period.

There is some underage drinking, undertones of sex and a girl with a kick a$$ attitude. Read Static. Do it. Right now.

Review by Shyla: Right out the gate I realized that Static wasn’t your average YA novel. The world Salem Vale lives in is gritty, dark and at times almost too real for a seventeen year old. With an ex groupie for a Mother, Goth Style, and balls the size of King Kong, Salem is a strange mixture of maturity, darkness, and vulnerability. Salem and her best friend Chloe have spent their entire summer following around their favorite band Malice, with all of their attempts to get backstage ending in failure. This is their last show in the area, so when Salem gets her hand on a backstage pass it seems like fate. Until a kiss from the dark and brooding lead singer Thane renders her unconscious.

Waking up in a dumpster without her cell phone or id is just the beginning of Salem’s problem as her life begins to unravel. A near death experience lands her in a hospital, and her life begins to read like an eighties horror movie. Her eyes bleed black, leaking a tar like substance, she wakes up floating near the ceiling, and she has a hunger for something other than food.

At this point you’d be inclined to think Malice must have been vampires, but you would be wrong, which is a huge part of what makes Static so very brilliant! Malice is a den of demons better known as succubus , and now Salem has become one of them. Her journey to this knowledge is filled with various trials, and a mysterious boy named Trevor who seems to know everything. This dark desire filled world is captivating and the plot is constantly going in a new and unexpected direction! Tawny infuses drama with humor in a seamless manor that keeps the story fresh.

One minute you’re laughing and the next you’ve been slipped into a moment that chills the blood in your veins. This creepy thriller is an echo of horror movies gone by. With its blend of romance, suspense, violence and macabre themes! This is one that teens and the older crowd alike can enjoy. But parents are forewarned there are a lot of adult themes in this one.

Static is an edgy YA paranormal book. I was pretty impressed actually – it was even better than I thought it would be. It's about a 17 year old girl named Salem who is determined to lose her virginity to the lead singer of a rock band. She basically seems obsessed with him. Little does she know, there is a very good reason for that. Thane, the lead singer of the band Malice, isn't what he seems. She finally gets a chance to meet him and next thing Salem knows, she wakes up in a dumpster somewhere. She can't remember what happened, but knows it was something awful.

This isn't your typical YA book. I'll admit, there is content in the book that some parents might not feel comfortable letting their teenagers read. The story is about so much more than just a teenage girl wanting to lose her virginity though. Not only that, but the book is so true to life of teenagers. Well, besides the supernatural part. Besides that part, this book is “real”. It doesn't have sweet innocent teenagers who do nothing but hold hands on a date. Don't get me wrong, there isn't any sex scenes in this book – but the desire that all teenagers feel is there.

The first part of the book keeps you on the edge of your seat, dying to know what is happening to Salem and wondering what kind of supernatural creatures we are dealing with. Also, even though the book isn't a novella, it is still pretty fast paced. It's exciting all the way through. Not only did I really like the character of Salem, I also really liked Trevor. He was sweet, and there was a lot of sexual tension and swoonwothy moments – even though they were plotting to kill.

This book is really well written, and it's very unique and original. I have no idea if it is part of a series but I would like to read more about these characters. I'd recommend this for older, mature teens – and even adults who like paranormal romances.

"Parents hide your little rockers because the demons are coming to town to suck out their souls"
At first glance at the cover I expected I would be getting into a contemporary novel about a girl in a band, but when you read that synopsis, it's anything but.
I devoured this book when I started reading it pulled me in. I always tend to be on the side of the "bad guys" in the books. I love the dark side that challenges, overpowers and sometimes protect the main characters. It happened again to me here. I always find myself asking, if this (main) character cannot overcome and fight back from what is put upon them, how can I truly root for them? Why would I recommend this book to others if I don't appreciate what the characters are put through?
As she has become more than human (but I will not spoil you with what exactly happens)there is a lot of heavy make out scenes and sexual tension that pushes Salem to act on her desire, or urges. Now that kinda sounds dirty, but really the story does not go into explicit details beyond what can be found in other Young Adult novels.
The cover really starts to make sense a little more than halfway through the book. The characters in the band and Salem begin to really get intertwined and get more complex. I really liked the twists and the idea of "shadow ways" I cannot remember if she actually refers to it as "shadow walking" but that's how I remember it in my head. It's creative and intriguing.
The chemistry between Trevor and Salem was my favorite part of the story. How there was always an edge of uncertainty when they were around each other or figuring things out. I think Salem is a fantastic lead character that does fight back in her way and takes on new challenges, she is somebody I rooted for.
Great characters, twists and energy happening in this one, I give it 5 stars, highly recommend.

Talk about some life changing music! I really loved this book. I think the plot line of this book really grips the reader. I am always amazed at the writer's out of the box imagination to create such a great and wonderful story!

Ok, first the plot line of this book is nothing like I've read before. I enjoyed being pulled in all kinds of directions but also diving into a book with a unique storyline. I love the thought of music becoming static. If what you hearing is not all that your hearing, but subliminal messages hidden within the music. The plot line never fell short. It caught the reader quickly from page one, never letting the reader go.

I loved how well Ms. Stokes brings the reader to a place in the book to connect with the characters. Ms. Stokes created likeable characters that anyone can connect to. You feel the characters angry and grief over what is taken from them unexpectedly. I enjoyed their harbored angry along with the plot to get back at them. It's like a lion hunting its prey. The characters completely engrossed to reader, that you are no longer yourself, but Trevor and Salem fighting for their lives.

The slight touch of love in this book gave a right combination of peace to it. The love that grew before the reader eyes set the tone for the book. That there is hope when you think you have nothing left. Ms. Stokes set the opportunity for love when there is fighting everywhere else. I really liked that it wasn't a insta-love but once that grew through survival.

Static, is a dark and thrilling book that I can read again. Filled with a revengeful plot and music that is not all what it is, Static is awesome! If you love a good paranormal book with a fresh twist read this book!

I had a bit of a love hate relationship with this book. It was unique and entertaining, but I didn’t really care for the hero—Trevor. Thane was much more interesting, and honestly, I liked him way better.

What I loved: Salem was a fabulous main character. She was spunky and sassy. Her personality was fantastic and kept me interested even when Trevor came along.

I also loved Thane. He was edgy, dangerous, and he didn’t hide who or what he was. When he met Salem again after the night that she was changed, he was blunt about being a demon and a killer. He owned it, and I loved that about him.

What I liked: The overall storyline was enjoyable. At times it felt a little underdeveloped, but overall, the revenge plot kept me intrigued.

What drove me crazy: Well, when we finally see Salem and Thane together, nothing really happened. It felt kind … flat, and could have been developed more. As the blurb says, the guy took her virginity and then threw her in the trash. But when they are finally face to face, Salem does his laundry—literally.

Thane was much more intriguing than Trevor, and near the end, he actually showed some redemptive qualities, and it was at that point, that I just couldn’t stand Trevor. He hid away worrying that Thane would hurt Salem, but that was it. He worried. And Thane, well, I got the impression that he care (in his own way) about Salem. He even saved her a one point. I guess I just didn’t see Trevor’s appeal.

In the end, I enjoyed the book. It was a light read, with great characters, but I’m still not sure if I’ll continue on with the recently released sequel.

Salem is a typical seventeen year old girl that is following her favorite band Malice around Idaho. She is infatuated with the lead singer Thane. The story starts with Salem and her best friend Chloe at Malice’s last show. Salem manages to get a back stage pass, but only one. Chloe lets her go by herself and Salem ends up waking up in a dumpster later the next day. When she gets home she ends up dieing.

Waking up in the hospital, Salem realizes something is wrong with her, especially when her eyes turn solid black and start leaking tar like tears. Soon she sees a guy that was backstage at Malice. Trevor is trying to tell her that her life is going to get real strange real fast but that he can help her. When she learns that she was turned into a cambion after Thane, an incubus, almost killed her, Salem doesn’t want to believe it. But when she almost kills the hottest guy at school, she if forced to face facts.

Trevor is also a cambion turned by Devon, the bands succubus. Trevor feels guilty that he didn’t stop Thane from almost killing Salem. But he thinks that working together, they can find a way to kill Malice.

This was one heck of a great story! Salem got a crummy hand dealt to her, but she over comes it. I feel so bad for Trevor, but being around Salem helps him to start healing from his own past. If you like the paranormal young adult stories, this is one that you must read. I cannot wait to see if there is going to be a sequel.

I received this book from Roxanne at Bewitching Book Tours for review.

After flying through the pages of Demon Whisperer I simply could not wait to read Static. At the same time I was a little nervous about reading Static because it's about a girl who plans to lose her virginity to a rock-star and so I thought that there would be sex in the book which I'm not always keen on but I have to say that in Static it was tastefully done. There's not really very much of a sex scene so I thought that was really good.

I started reading Static and I just couldn't stop. I really liked Salem, I thought she was a great main character, strong and definitely awesome. Not to mention her name, Salem, that is such a cool name. I also liked Trevor too. He seemed like such a cool guy and I was rooting for them both to kick some bad guy butt.

The story line was good. Tawny Stokes does a really good job of straying from normal paranormal creatures and writing about some well known ones that aren't so over done. I find it to be really refreshing.

I really liked the pacing of Static; there was always something happening so I always had a reason to keep reading. The ending was really good too and I'm curious as to whether there will be a sequel or not and if there is then I am going to be all over it.

I would say that Static is a brilliant book and if you're looking for a paranormal book that isn't your run of the mill story then you'll love Static.

As much as I love vampire fiction it was fun to read something that was paranormal but different. I dont want to spoil it too much and say what the characters are. But they are not shifters and not vampires. And it was a great story.

The main characters of Salem and Trevor are well developed and you feel like you know enough about them to have their decisions make sense. Many of the secondary characters (members of the band Malice) are not as well-developed. But for being the secondary, evil character types they had enough detail. A couple members remained fairly mysterious though the whole story but it worked.

The only problem I had with the story was the actions of the groupies at the clubs. It was very 70s-80s like. It just had the feeling of how groupies acted then. I know in many cases its still like that, but those scenes with trying to get backstage passes, parties, etc just seemed to me way more dated and out of place than the rest of the story.

The story was interesting. It flowed well. I didnt notice any lag spots and I never got lost following the movements of the characters. It was very well written and I enjoyed reading it. I am looking forward to reading more by this author.

FULL ORIGINAL REVIEW @ HERE!

What’s the first thing you think about whenever you read the summary of this book? You think about Jennifer’s Body, don’t you? I am completely sure that the summary reminds you of it, but let me tell you this, this is soo NOT like Jennifer’s Body. I have to admit that I thought the same when I found out about it, but as I started reading it, I realized that I was wrong, that this book was something different, and I am so glad I did.

Now, shall we talk about the plot or. . .? Yeah, let’s go with the plot. I admit that I completely loved everything about it. Yes, everything includes the beginning, the development and how it made me suffer in the best way possible. I still remember that I couldn’t really put this book down thanks to how good it was! Tawny did an amazing job writing this original and amazing story that blew me away and has me here, wanting to read it again, and ah, the way she made her little connections across the characters and the plot twists was seriously very well done and easy to understand and I think that’s what I loved the most, to be honest.

I don’t know what else to say so let’s move on to the characters now, shall we? This is probably one of the few books where I didn’t hate any of the characters and have zero complaints about them! Is actually the other way around, I totally loved them and the way they developed! Even though Salem was kind of dumb at the beginning being all butterflies and rainbows over Thane and saving her virginity for him, I loved the way she developed after waking up in a dumpster and realizing and accepting what happened to her. I also loved how Trevor helped her control herself, understand what happened, what was happening and what had to happen. The way those two characters connected was very very good, I loved it. And last but not least (after jumping a bunch of other characters), we have the famous lead-singer of Malice called Thane, and I only have one thing to say about him: he’s an ass.

And finally, to end this review, all I have to say is that if you guys are searching for a nice and kind of funny (because yeah, I laughed at some parts) paranormal read, you should totally check this one out! I totally recommend it! Oh, and if you end up loving it as much as I did, make sure to check out the second book Electric (which I’ll be reading soon, since I recently found out about it).

When I saw the cover of this novel I wasn't too sure what to expect, I just knew that it would have something to do with music and Rock N Roll hence the girl in the tartan skirt holding an awesome red and white electric guitar, but that was as far as I had gotten. As readers know I am a cover lover and that was the reason I purchased this book as I loved the look of the cover and thought to myself hmmm --- that could be a book I am interested in.
Static took me surprisingly not only into the world of Rock N Roll and Music , Backstage parties which I kind of expected but into a world where this novel would turn more into fantasy supernatural rather than a reality type teen angst novel. You see the main band in the novel are not of this world and not to give too much of the main surprise away lets just say that they have been getting away with it for centuries.
Static starts with two teens Chloe and Salem who have been traipsing around the music scene following the popular band Malice. Salem more than Chloe is absolutely head over heels in love with the lead singer Thane and has planned to lose her virginity to him backstage. Things however don't go exactly to plan as it turns out the band is hiding a dark secret - they are in fact incubuis aka Sex Demons who feed off their victims via sexual intimacy. When Salem wakes up she discovers something is off and she later discovers, that they have turned her into a Cambion - one who is turned by a incubi. Now Salem along with Trevor who was also turned must work together to gain their revenge on the band and by doing so must band together in order to survive or else they like the rest of the band's victims will end up in tomorrows trash.
Static was an interesting novel and started off great, but I found near the end of the book it seemed a little rush and the ending was quite sharp and blunt yet it does also allow a cliffhanger of sorts as you the reader are left to wonder what becomes of the main characters etc.
If you are wanting a light-read and something demony and supernaturally like with a mix of Rock N Roll music bopping around in the novel , then Static by Tawny Stokes is the novel for you.

Tawny Stokes’s debut, Static, completely took my by surprise! I didn’t know if I was going to like it or not, but once I started, I couldn’t stop reading Static, and finished it in no time.

One of the things I liked the most about Static is that isn’t censored. For a young adult book—especially a paranormal one, it’s pretty gritty and raw. I loved how down to earth it all seemed. The mythology Tawny Stokes has created for Static was fantastic, and was just detailed enough to enjoy Static.

I was really surprised by how much I liked Tawny Stokes’s writing style. Sure, there are some little things I noticed, but overall she is a great writer and after reading two of her books, I know I will be checking out more of her books in the future. Every word packs a punch, and her writing is smooth and to the point.

Salem was really edgy, spunky, and was a really fun character to read about. She doesn’t take crap from anybody, and was really strong and fierce. The supporting characters were all pretty solid, except Trevor, who got on my nerves too often for me to really like him throughout the book. By the end, however, I did warm up to him.

If you want a quick paranormal read that will sweep you away for a little while, don’t hesitate to read Static. It’s a great debut, and I really enjoyed reading it.

I have recently had the immense pleasure of reading not one, but two books by Tawny Stokes, and I can tell you I will be waiting for more. Her writing is edgy and intense, fast paced and fun. I love how Stokes is able to write a book that can be so dark one page, and have me chuckling the next. Static is a book like no other that I have read before, and I have to say it was pretty frickin awesome.

Salem starts off as this star-struck girl that just wants to meet the lead singer of her favorite band and sleep with him. Really? I mean who makes that their life's goal? I have never understood how people can get so totally obsessed with "stars. Anyway... moving on from that mini rant. Once Salem meets her obsession she realizes that he isn't all she thought he would be and she finds her self in a situation that she can't explain. Later on in the book Stokes provides a reason for Salem's obsessive behavior and all is happy in my mind again. Gritty and suspenseful Static might just be your next up to late reading to function the next day book. I know I am adding Tawny Stokes to my must read this author's books list.

Word of Warning: It is my opinion that Static is probably best for mature young adult readers.

Salem has been following her favorite band all summer waiting for her chance to be with the lead singer of the band. When her shot finally arrives everything goes wrong and she wakes up in a dumpster rembering nothing of what happened or how she got there. Suddenly something is happening to her and the only one with answers is roadie, Trevor.

Trevor was on and off but once you found out his past and how he's gotten to where he is you understand what he's doing touring with Malice. He was a great male lead coming to Salems rescue over and over and I LOVED him for it. Salem might have been a bit níaive, but once she decided on something she stuck to her guns and more props to her for it.

This is the first in a new series and the second is out now!!

¡Me gustó mucho!

This book was kind of ridiculous, but I liked it. I haven't seen many YA books that involve incubi and their offspring, let alone do so well. But this book does a great job with it. It was a little over the top with the romance between the two main characters, but I've come to just expect that in in YA books lately. I do think the author does a wonderful job of creating that relationship in a not creepy way, and the girl gets to stand on her own, grow, and save the day, which I appreciate.

I'm really glad I read this book, which I received for free from a Goodreads giveaway.

Another page-turner by Tawny Stokes.
This tale reminds you to be careful what you wish for. Because you just might get it.
Salem fantasized about losing her virginity to her punk rock idol, Thane, lead singer of the band Malice. Who ever thought she'd actually get to meet him, let alone end up in his bed. Or did she? This is where her nightmare begins...

REVIEWED BY PAPERBACK KINGDOM BOOK BLOG:

Static is a well-written book, which does a great job of mixing a punk-rock, music-loving, alternative lifestyle with the strange and supernatural.

What We Liked:

Salem is a very interesting main character, and she's likeable for a lot of reasons. She's different— without the added supernatural stuff. Like, she's actually different, and it's refreshing to be in the head of a main character who is not only aware of her status as an outcast, but actually embraces it. Even though the popular boy, Josh, takes an interest in her, she doesn't fall head over heels believing it's a dream come true— she's aware of how weird it is, and she is able to distinguish that no matter how handsome he may be, they're not a perfect fit.

Salem is a sensible, brave, and gutsy protagonist, which was really nice to see.

This book is also a great book to showcase sexual relationships in both a consensual, and non-consensual light. Sex in young adult books is really important, especially in teaching young girls what to expect and how to say no. Thought a tad jarring to read about, it does paint a picture of awareness for the reader, whereas a lot of YA books tend to gloss over these scenarios and create a false sense of reality.

What Could Be Improved:

While the first half of the book was great, the second half seemed to fly by. The romance between Salem and Trevor ignited very quickly, and it wasn't a case of instalove, but it definitely moved fast for two people who barely knew each other. Additionally, the band members didn't feel threatening enough sometimes—they have the power to control and kill people, and yet, they'd rather make Salem their laundry slave? It doesn’t seem evil enough, and it lowered the stakes.

But overall, the book is still a great read and definitely fit for its age group.

Recommended For:

Suitable for young adults between the ages of roughly 15 and up. It would probably appeal to people in their early 20's as well.
