In this book from the highly acclaimed Little People, BIG DREAMS series, discover the incredible life of Leo Messi, one of the world's most skilled and celebrated soccer players.
As a child, Leo developed his passion for soccer playing games with his brothers and cousins in the streets of Rosario, Argentina. He later honed his skills on the pitch as part of the local youth team, Newell's Old Boys – who famously won every tournament whilst Leo was with them. But life wasn't without its challenges. Aged 9, he was diagnosed with Growth Hormone Deficiency, which meant he had to inject himself with hormones from the doctor every day to help him grow. But nothing was going to stop Leo from following his dreams. He debuted with FC Barcelona in 2004 and across the next 17 years scored 672 goals for the club and helped them to win 35 trophies. Leo has also received seven Golden Ball awards, more than any other soccer player in history, and won 4 trophies with Argentina's national football team, including the 2022 World Cup, where he captained the team to victory. Messi's next chapter will be spent training under the Florida sunshine, having joined the U.S. team Inter Miami CF.
Today, he is considered by many to be 'The Greatest of All Time' – and is a hero off the pitch, too, as a committed ambassador for UNICEF and founder of his own children's charity.
Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara, born in Barcelona, Spain, is a writer and creative director perhaps best known as the author of much of the Little People, Big Dreams series. Each book tells the childhood story of one of the world's female icons in an entertaining, conversational way that works well for the youngest nonfiction readers, allowing them to identify with the characters in each story.
Little People, big dreams – LEO MESSI written by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara and illustrated by Florencia Gavilan. Is a cheeky little graphic book about the brilliant Argentinian FootballerLeo Messi.
As a passionate football fan, this little book is right down my alley. More importantly, this would be ideal for any young kid (I’d imagine 5-10 years of age) to inspire them to play our great game.
The art here is fun and colourful. I love the way the artist paints Messi, as small. He was and is. He's a wee man. What a wonderful thing to inspire a young footballer - particularly a small or tiny young kid - to become a footballer.
We follow Messi's introduction into team football in Rosario, Argentina – encouraged by his Abuela.
We also learn about his health involving growth hormone treatment because he was so diminutive . But also, his stellar ability, so much so that – Barcelona, one of the world’s biggest clubs (….almost as big as Leeds United), showed interest in the lad at 13 years of age The rest is history.
I will carry my experience to the grave just last year, visiting the Camp Nou in Barcelona and seeing for myself some of the trophies won by this great player.
One thing that strikes one about Messi, apart from his obscene ability, is his humility.
Often lauded as the best of all-time, for me, it’s close between Messi and Maradona – either way, Leo is brilliant. Winning the World Cup last year was the cherry on the cake for him, as it's often said - and I agree - "one cannot be considered the world's best until one wins a World Cup".
It's a great little picture book for the young ones. A must buy to inspire.
5 Stars
Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my review.
Arguably, Leo Messi always plays for teams I don't follow, e.g. Argentina, FC Barcelona, but I'm well aware he's one of the best players, if not the best player, alive. There is much to be said about Cristiano Ronaldo, but this isn't his book, so...
In his youth, Leo needed injections to help him grow. I didn't know this about him. It makes for a very interesting story. I did know he was very young when he started at the Barça youth program. His rise is obviously very well known, and his fame deserved.
This inspiring biography series for children (4-7 years) brings exciting figure of Leo Messi, one of the best soccer players, if not the best.
Leo comes from Argentina, where from childhood he loved playing soccer. He was so good that he got on a team with older boys. With Leo on the team, they won every single tournament.
At thirteen, he got invited to Spain to try out for Barcelona’s youth academy. He was accepted within minutes of his playing. At sixteen, he joined the first team and with time became the greatest player in soccer’s history.
When Leo started playing soccer, he was always the smallest among the players. At first, it was because he was the youngest. Later, it turned out to be his medical condition for which he got help with injections. This obstacle didn’t stop him from becoming one of the greatest soccer players.
There were times, when his team lost, and in those moments he drew inspiration from happy children, including his family and all the children he helped through his charity.
With easy to comprehend sentences, and fun illustrations, this book is a cheerful inspiration for children.

My 8-year-old ‘Messi-crazed’ nephew has just finished reading this spectacular book … to me!
I asked him what he thought people needed to know about this book:
1) You will learn why Messi likes jersey #10 2) You will learn why Messi points to the sky when he scores 3) You will learn why Messi is considered the G.O.A.T. 4) You will learn why his grandma is an important part of his life. 5) You will learn about all the things he could have used as an excuse not to play soccer. 6) You will learn what Messi does when he loses.
I’d like to add that it was great to read about someone who believes that “life’s obstacles are just a part of the journey to reach our dreams.” Most fans see his success and don’t consider the multitude of losses on the way to the top. Furthermore, I appreciated that he discusses how he handles losses and this gives fans something to focus on while they are perfecting their skills.
Messi’s advice: “You can overcome anything if only you love something enough.”
The illustrations are fantastic and the photos/timeline adds just enough information to get children interested to investigate further.
I was gifted this book by Quarto Publishing Group, Frances Lincoln Children’s Books, and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
"You can overcome anything if only you love something enough" Leo began playing footie even before he started school and kept on with it to become an international FIFA star player who gave a lot of support to his foundation and work with UNICEF. The illustrations by Florencia Gavilán are fun, simple, colorful, and delightful. Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or your local public library! I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Quarto Publishing Group/Frances Lincoln Children's Books via NetGalley. Thank you! @QuartoKids @CBCBook @Frances_Lincoln #littlepeoplebigdreams @sanchezvegara
I became a fan of Messi when my daughter lived in Argentina and he was playing for their World Cup team. This series, which is biographies written for children, gives background to the international soccer star. I learned about his speed and abilities that were recognized early on and also having to take injections to grow. Messi is one of the few soccer players I get requests for books about in my school library. This would be a welcome addition to my shelf or for soccer fan families. Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for the temporary ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.
I love this series. However, I am quite disappointed with the illustrations and the write up for this one. Enough information fit for the reader audience is there but I expect the quality to be as par or better than the other books in this series.
Thank you, Frances Lincoln Children’s Books, for the advance reading copy.
Very cute children's book for any child who has an interest in soccer and likes Leo Messi. The story of his young life is uplifting and lets you know never to give up and fight for what you want. I learned things about Leo Messi that I didn't know from reading this story.
Leo Messi is the 106th book in the Little People, Big Dreams series. Even if you don't follow soccer, chances are you have heard of Leo Messi, one of the best soccer players in the world. Leo lived in Rosario, Argentina and played soccer in the streets. His grandmother was his number one supporter, and got him to play on some local teams. When he was nine, the doctors diagnosed him with a problem with his growth hormones. He needed injections which were very expensive, but luckily, his soccer team helped pay for them and they worked. By the age of thirteen, he was invited to Spain and earned a place at FC Barcelona's Youth Academy. He only improved and moved up from there. He won many awards with FC Barcelona and even led Argentina to the World Cup. Never forgetting where he came from, he supports vulnerable children with his foundation and works with UNICEF.
I love this series as it shows children that anyone can overcome things to follow their dreams. Little Leo had a talent, but without the support of his grandma and hard work, he wouldn't have achieved what he did. This series is made up of child friendly biographies, to show children that dreaming big is something everyone can do and you might just be able to be what you have envisioned. For young children who may be smaller than others on their team or in their class, it gives them hope and something to strive for. My grandson played soccer this past summer for the first time, so he enjoyed this book very much. I read it to them, then he read it by himself. We also checked out images on the internet to see more, which is a goal of this series. Another great addition to the Little People, BIG DREAMS series.
I absolutely love this series. It presents people who went from ordinary to superheroes. I feel that they will encourage the little readers about their journey to success in a fun, easy to read way.
Kudos to the dynamic combination of author and illustrator who have made this one of my fave series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you @netgalley
Leo Messi by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara was another brilliant book. As a child, Leo developed his passion for soccer playing games with his brothers and cousins in the streets of Rosario, Argentina. This inspiring book features stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of Messi's incredible story.
WoW! Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara books must be one of the best little books to purchase for children, these are the best-selling series of books and educational games that explore the lives of outstanding people, from designers and artists to scientists and activists. All of them achieved incredible things, yet each began life as a child with a dream.
I love the books in this series and always find something new in them, this was a book that focused on a legend in the footballing world - the great Leo Messi.
In this book we get to read a little about his early life and his background where he started out playing football in the streets of Argentina - it sounds like he was a really fun kid to have around.
The book details a little on his treatment that he had when he was younger too after he was diagnosed with a Growth Hormone Deficiency, meaning he had to inject himself daily so that he could follow his dreams - as a diabetic that uses insulin I can tell you that it is no fun at all and it goes a little way to show how determined he really was to succeed - and boy did he succeed!
Messi has won dozens of trophies during his career and these include 8 Ballon d'Or, the FIFA World Player of the Year 7 times, 9 times he was La Liga Player of the Year, he won the European Golden Shoe 6 times as some of the main awards. He has also won the World Cup and an Olympic Gold Medal with the Argentinian national team - not bad for a young boy that started out played on the streets of his hometown.
I always enjoy the extra facts at the end of the book and the biographical timeline with the historical photos and the links for any further reading.
The illustrations in the book really suit this one and it is another great addition to the series - it is 4 stars from me for this one - highly recommended!
This is a wonderful children's book from the Little People, Big Dreams series, which is an amazing, educational series of books, focusing on inspirational people in the world.
This book focuses on Leo Messi, the footballer. When Leo was young, he played football in the streets with his brother and cousins. He then joined a football team at the age of four, and after that he made it into his favourite hometown football club. When he was nine, he had to have injections to help him to grow. When he was thirteen, he signed a contract with Barcelona Football Club. When he was sixteen, he made his debut for the first team, and for twelve years he was his team's icon, winning many matches and becoming an inspiration to many. He went on to join Paris Saint-Germain, he lead the Argentina team to victory at the World Cup, and today he is with the US club Inter Miami CF.
I found this book really interesting, and I really loved looking at the beautiful illustrations in the book, as well as the informative text sections and photographs at the end of the book.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
A book that does pretty much what you expect – a very simple biography of Messi, which did tell me things I didn't know, such as his growth hormone injections taken as a teenager, and which shines a potential light as a way forward for other similarly-minded young readers. The Messi here is all about the football, with a touch of charity work at the end, with the typical message about things always being possible if you put your heart and love into it. You don't have to be the most observant to see someone else that might have been called the best of his time not mentioned (and how that will smart that he hasn't got a book in this series, when Messi and even Marcus Rashford have), but this shows that even the most satisfied of people still want more, in Messi's case his world cup winner's badge. Still, much as Lionel didn't rest on any laurels, this series doesn't, and this entrant is a good example of its kind.
Messi's life story for children, the ilustrations are stunning.
I loved the fact that the book adresses Messi's Growth Hormone Deficiency, and it's a good way to talk to kids and make them understand that if they have the same condition there is nothing wrong with them and that they can make their dreams come true.
Messi is an absolute national treasure for us (I'm from Argentina) and this is a lovely book for Messi's little fans.
Recomendable.
Leo Messi, an inspiration to young children worldwide.
Another fantastic book by Little People Big Dreams. Leo Messi's book offers a unique insight into his younger years that is awe inspiring for young children particularly those like my son who are facing medical trials of their own.
The writing style calls children in. I started reading to one child and soon a bunch of them had crowded around us and were absorbed into Leo Messi's life. The kids wanted to hear more about his charity in the story but otherwise I'd say it was pretty flawless.
I was gifted a digital copy of Leo Messi, Little People Big Dreams in exchange for a fair and honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing for this opportunity.
Another excellent addition to the series. Again, I'm not the biggest football fan so a lot of this I didn't know about his early football days and personal life/charity work. It was really interesting to see his roots, where he came from and his journey to becoming one of the best footballers of all time. I really loved the illustrator's style in this one, and I think I've said before but I like that they all seem to match but have a lot of different illustrators with their own unique styles. The only thing I wish is that it had been called Lionel Messi because although I don't know much about him, I've watched World Cups and seen him talked about a lot but I've never heard him referred to as Leo before?
The latest in the Little People Big Dreams sees the story of Lionel Messi told for children.
I think this is actually one of the best books I have read in this series - it was very well rounded, and incredibly informative for such a short book. I live with football mad boys, and I thought I knew about Messi, but this book taught me about his childhood struggles, his love of his Grandma and why the number 10 shirt is so important to him.
Wonderful illustrations, and great subject matter - Messi is a fabulous example of working hard to achieve your dreams, but also showing how to handle losses.
My kids love the Little People, Big Dreams books for the very simple and approachable way they highlight notable public figures, and Leo Messi is a great addition. The book goes into a lot of details about Messi's early life, which I think makes it that much more relatable for young kids. It is also very relatable since he is a modern soccer player who won a World Cup as recently as last year. I highly recommend this book and many other from the Little People, Big Dreams series!
Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books via NetGalley for gifting my family with an ARC to review. We loved it!
In this book the life and success of Leo Messi is explored in a clear and easy to understand way. As someone who has no knowledge or prior interest in Messi I didn’t expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. It was really easy to read, the pictures are well drawn and I feel I could easily have a chat with the football fans in my family about my newly gained knowledge! Children will also benefit from the artwork, short pieces of text and easy sentence structures. It’s refreshing to see an inspirational story written in an engaging way which children won’t find overwhelming.
Even people who don’t know much about soccer are probably familiar with the name Leo Messi. He is probably the (or certainly one of the) greatest soccer players ever. Messi serves as an inspiration to all kids who enjoy this game.
In this latest entry in the Little People, Big Dreams series find out about Messi’s early years and his route to greatness. It is an inspiring story. In addition, those who are interested will find additional resources at the end of the book.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this title. All opinions re my own.
Me and my children enjoyed this story with all the characters within. It about life of a celebrated soccer player. It start out when the soccer player is young and go to adulthood.
This was a fun story to read. It had action and adventure throughout. It had a few giggles within. The illustrations went well with the story and were colorful.
I received a complimentary copy via Netgalley. This is my honest unbiased opinions.
I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are my own opinions.
Even myself, a non fan of any sports, know the name Messi. It is fascinating to learn his story, which in Little People Big Dreams fashion includes both the ups and down of his life. I love this series and the people it has introduced not only students to, but all the people I got to become more familiar with as well.
always been a fan of "little people, big dreams" series. was expecting more insight on his personal life too given he has a seemingly steady and successful long term relationship. A little let down since the book never mentions about it. But besides that, this was a good read. Thanks to #netgalley for the early copy.
This is a cute book for kids to learn about the GOAT, Lionel Messi; Leo. The artwork is beautiful and would be easy for kids to see what's happening in the book. There are some great little tidbits you might not have known about his earlier years, so that was nice to read. Overall, definitely recommend.
My son was so happy to have me read this to him and I love that this series is bringing some more recent and relevant inspiring people to Childrens minds. I have loved this series from the beginning but my son has fallen in love now that he has one where he knows who we are talking about immediately
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review
