The Cold War is over, and chaos is setting in. The new President of Russia is trying to create a new democratic regime. But there are strong elements within the country that are trying to stop him: the ruthless Russian Mafia, the right-wing nationalists, and even revanchist Czarists. Op-Center, the newly founded but highly successful crisis management team, begins a race against the clock and against the hardliners. Its members face an uphill battle. Their task is made more difficult by the discovery of a Russian counterpart to Op-Center - but this one is controlled by the same repressive hardliners. Two rival Op-Centers, virtual mirrors of each other, exist. But if this mirror cracks, it will be much more than seven years bad luck.

Decent book I thought was OK. It was like the first one. Still way better than the Power Plays Politik book.

Russia is a nation whose people are romantics and deep into nostalgia. They are people who still yearns for the time when they were a huge world power, the time of the Soviet Union.
A book which speaks loudly about the greed for power which is there in any human and the way we can even justify murder for a greater good.
My favourite section in this book is when an American General shares a Russian Folktale with his counterpart Russian General. History has its lessons and we need to learn from everyone.

Old guard elements in Russia look to reconstitute the old Soviet Empire, however their plans run into a stumbling block in the form of Op-Center and their Russian counterpart. Mirror Image is the second book in the Op-Center series bearing that bears the name of Tom Clancy, but was actually ghostwritten by Jeff Rovin. From the historic Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg to the streets of New York to the frozen wilderness of Siberia, the action spans across the world as forces and individuals battle to reignite or prevent a new Soviet era.

Nikolai Dogin, Russian Minister of the Interior and loser of the Presidential election, convinces his old guard coalition members to go along with “Plan B” which amounts to a military revolution to reignite the old Soviet Empire. One of his most important pieces in the newly created Operations Center (ROC), a Russian crisis management center exactly like Op-Center, but its head General Sergei Orlov might not be the figurehead Dogin hopes. The old guard’s plan begins with a bombing in New York to keep the United States out of Eastern Europe, but results in Op-Center zeroing in on its Russian counterpart that is Orlov and his second-in-command (a Dogin flunky) battling for control. Yet Dogin’s dealings with the Russian mafia prove his undoing as a shipment of drug money to pay off Polish, Belarussian, and Ukrainian officials becomes the focus of the ROC and Op-Center on the Trans-Siberian Railroad.

Written in the mid-90s when post-Soviet era Russia provided a lot of potential to the political thriller genre, Mirror Image took an interesting tack that could have provided an very good book however there was many unfortunate mistakes that made this seem a “set up” book for later events in the Op-Center series. The first was the blurb on the back cover of the book itself which stated the hardliners wanted to return Russia to the days of the Czar, within the first 15 pages of the book this statement is proven false and things are just starting. There are father-son issues dominating the Russian side of the book as Orlov and his son’s past that would play a major role at the book’s climax, which was very much telegraphed from the onset. An important character dies at the climax, which is pretty much telegraphed throughout his point-of-views. However, the most irritating thing with the book was that characters “magically” got information or knew things that the story didn’t support them knowing or characters didn’t act like they should of (Orlov not getting into contact with the new President seems to be the most glaring). Although most of the book seemed paint-by-the-numbers, the British spy network subplot was the best of the book.

Mirror Image seemed to be a book meant to add elements to the overall “world” of Op-Center to set up future stories as Rovin relied on telegraphing the story’s direction and creating in-story plot holes. While Sergei Orlov and British spy Peggy James are the two stand out characters, it’s not saying much because previously establish characters were in a holding pattern and other new characters were two-dimensional. This book could have been very good, it just average and almost subpar.

I was a bit sceptical towards this book as Tom Clancy is known by being the master of the techno-thriller genre, which is not my thing. I don't like much technological description, as it happens on Atlantis by David Gibbins. Fortunately the description of the electronic elements isn't extent, just the necessary to understand which use they have on the story.

I actually liked the story, though at the beginning I thought I would suffer from jet-lag. The chapters jump from a geographical point to another, where the actions is taking place, and since this points were on opposed sides of the globe, the chapter tell us when, where and the time in which the action is taking place. So you pass from an afternoon to a morning and then it's night. At first is tired a bit hence the jet-lag feeling, but then after getting into the rhythm it turns out to be agreeable.

We find ourselves in the eves of Russia setting a operations center fully operational, an exact mirror of another center set on the U.S., but this one isn't ruled by the Russian government but by a minister, who was defeated on elections and dreams of getting back to the golden age of the Soviet Union. To make sure the U.S. will not meddle in, they're threatened by terrorists' attacks. But of course the U.S. can't be without doing anything and the American Op-center gets into action.

The characters aren't much developed, only enough to let us know what is going through their minds, but we can't stay indifferent to what awaits them in their varied missions. It's easy to connect to them and fell we're part of the teams.

I think it would work as a movie, since it's a bit visual and it could work just like the adaptations of Bourne and Jack Ryan. As a book it entertains and it's not boring, it's actually a nice reading to lighten up.

If Op-Center was in charge of Irak,Syria or Afganistan maybe they could made them U.S states by now .it exagerates a LOT about American troops and capability and made the Russians look like useless idiots, There is a part where the Strikers (Op-Center's strike team) with more gadgets than James Bond assaults , incapacitates and destroys an train WITHOUT killing a single Spetznaz (Russian Elite Troops) after doing a parachute jump, in a very hostile winter enviroment also with only 4 guys against 9 Russians. Also it has some facts mistaken, the girl in the Striker team made SEAL training, ok i get that maybe a woman passed the test, but it isn't supposed of her to be in the Navy where they don't have the rank ''Private'' . Also the UK agent must be a superwoman, dealing with several Russian idiots of Center (the Russian Op-Center) without a scratch. Did i mention that they stopped a World War and the birth of the new Soviet Union? the history is amazingly shallow and goes bottom after the first decent novel of this series. The weirdest part of the novel was when a Spetsnaz soldier with blind fucking luck by some miracle hits an Striker and he has time to put the train to full power, hence derailing it and killing the Strikers' commander. LUCKY!

I just finished reading the book, minutes ago... and I can still feel the moisture in my eyes!
The book is extremely well-written, and the heroics and patriotism of the characters involved is so real in feeling that I almost believe it is a true-life story or something.
The starting of the book was really nice, what with all the hollywood-movie style elimination of the workers who had done a small misdeed. The way the scenario changes is nicely executed here.
Along the middle of the book, the author ends a chapter on cliff-hangers such that you want to just skip a few chapters to read again of what is happening here.
The characterization is really, absolutely awesome. You feel that the characters involved are people, and not just different entities. The plot revolves around the Russian overthrowing-the-current-ruler thing that has been going on there from centuries, and boy does it revolve nicely! The way everything is linked is really nice, and feels true, not manufactured.
In all, a great book to read. All time great.

I enjoyed the first book in this series greatly, I also enjoyed the beginning of this book as well. Which is why I am rating it two stars instead of one.

However I came to realize many shortcomings of the story that were either repetitive, bad writing, or plainly inaccurate and at many times cliché.

The shallow and now uninteresting characters I had enjoyed reading so much in the first book, as well as the lack of interesting antagonists, overall left the book to be a dud and challenge to read.

I went further onto goodreads reviews of the others in the series and found many reviewers whom have had issues similar to mine after the first novel, and have decided to drop the series as a whole. I spent a long time thinking on this, because I greatly enjoyed the first book, but if they continue as this one does (which it seems the books in the series does, and get worse too) I had to make the decision to cut ties, which is unfortunate, but maybe I will enjoy books that Tom Clancy himself has written.

This series had me hooked from the first, but crashed and burned me on the second, never leading me to continue it through.

This book is part of a series of Books known as the op-center. In this book the newly elected leader of Russi after the Cold War is planning to rebuild the Russian Empire, but there are people who want to go back to the days of the Czar. Then there is a Russian op-center that matches the U.S. op-center alomost evenly. This book is suspenseful and has alot of action but, it is very long.

Nikolai Dogin, Russia's Minister of the Interior, just lost the presidential election to Kiril Zhanin. Undeterred, he continued with his plans to re-establish the Soviet empire.

I hate it when it looks like the "good" guys are going to be in trouble, and they seem to be heading toward trouble a lot in this book, which made me stall numerous times. First there is Keith Fields-Hutton, then Jet Lee, Peggy James, Private George, and the rest of the Striker team. Not to mention Sergei Orlov. Mike Rodgers is sitting pretty this time, while fuming that Paul Hood decides to abandon his family to take over the leadership of Op-Center during crisis. I have to admit that I finally couldn't stand it anymore and looked in the back to see who survived. Naturally, I missed one, and yes, that death makes me sad - seems a very steep price to pay in that particular scene.

At least this time the team is a bit more cohesive, or maybe it was just Liz Gordon's perspectives before. In this book, the opinions come from Ann Farris, who seems to be a much nicer person than Liz. She doesn't even seem to be annoyed with Lowell Coffey, like Liz previously implied. She thinks that Liz is the biggest bully.

Unfortunately, Paul Hood is not as interesting as in the other 2 books I've read. He seems pretty dull, actually, not the enigmatic leader who is quietly dealing with serious personal problems. Bob Herbert barely has anything to say. Same with Matt Stoll. There are too many people and events that this book tries to cover and at the end, it loses focus on the Op-Center. I tried to write down who these people are, but at the end I got one person completely wrong.

— Dacă nu-ţi dai seama care-i deosebirea, Piotr, înseamnă că eşti tâmpit.

I have reas some of the later op center books in this series, and have felt let down by them as a general rule as. It living up to the Clancy standard I am used to. Mirror Image was a return to the masterful storytelling I expect from Clancy’s work, and I suspect he had more of a hand in the writing of this one than he has in some of the subsequent less stellar novels. I think the level of detail was perhaps not quite as high as some of the original Jack Ryan series books, but some of those, like The Sum of All Fears, delved into a little too much detail on the manufacture of a nuclear weapon, so I’m not sure that’s an entirely bad thing. But I do like a little more depth of character development and plot intricacy than I saw in this book, which I suspect is shorter for faster faster times to publication. Still, a nice read.

Maybe 3.5/5, but it doesn't even come close to the first chapter of the series.

Not very Clancy-esque (if not for the technical bits which don't abound anyway), more diverted towards a novel-style prose than what one may expect from Clancy. The rhythm is really slow for most of the book and the amount of build-up is at times almost intolerable. Even the last 100-ish pages, as better as they are, don't completely hit it home for me and some of the key moments seem a bit poorly thought out, more to create convenient "big moments" than following real world logic.

Clancy definitely knew better than this

Mirror Image by Tom Clancy

This is one of the Op-Center books. You expect Clancy style and polish and you get something different than you expected. My wife quit after 50 pages. I stuck it out and finished it. It is a détente type of book with electronic surveillance the center of the technology. It’s set after the collapse of the Soviet Union and diehards are trying to resurrect it.

The plot wasn’t bad but the writing felt disjointed. There was decent action and some good characters but they did not feel properly fleshed out.

Featured an ex cosmonaut. Just a procedural action story. Was waiting for a twist that never came.

There is a former cosmonaut.

Failed to work out which character we were supposed to care about. A key Russian character is a former cosmonaut.

The usual useless details I'd expect... "Orlov, the former cosmonaut, heard a ding so pressed shift F4 to read his message which popped up in a new window in Arial 10 point font". OK I paraphrased but my point stands.

if it's your thing, a drinking game could be every time you read a reference to Orlov's cosmonaut days......

Great job on 2nd book. Paul and the whole entire group came together in a tough and tricky plot. Unlike what Putin is doing today. But Paul and Mike came together to get job done. The plot also showed the sacrifices of what their jobs have on Paul's and Mike's personal life. The whole Opt- Center is that way. Also Mikes was definitely heartbroken over the Striker commander death. A l so Paul definitely found a colleague in Orlov. Just a fantastic series. Can't for next one!!!! 5 stars plus . Thanks, Carl Clause

I am very much love Tom Clancy’s book and novels. This one is no exception the is amazing like always. The characters are full of life and courage. Not to mention best amount of action you can get. What made this book so intresting was that it was like I was in the battlefield. There is so much detail flowing around you its great! What made the book have great elements of action and suspense is mostly the plot. I hope you people enjoy this awesome book.

I know this is fiction but come on, some of this strayed into the absolutely silly. I can suspend belief with no problem normally if it moves the action along but the stuff in this book had me just shaking my head in disbelief at what the author expected me to believe. Sure hope the next one is better. I started off with a later book in the series and liked it a lot. Not this one. ! But I liked the narrator, he was great.

I prefer Tom Clancy over Jeff Rovin as a writer of spy novels. Rovin is too gung-ho with mindless military rhetoric and misogynistic treatment of women. A good story, but I will not be able to tolerate another novel by Rovin because I am tired of gagging on so many (unnecessary) sentences. This novel is better than Op-Center 1, yet neither deserve to be in print. I stuck with this novel because parts are placed at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia—one of my favorite places on earth.

Mirror Image by Tom Clancy – Quick Review

Boy howdy, this book’s a wild ride. Got spies, guns, and a feller who looks like another feller causin’ all kinda mess. I got lost a few times—too many big ol’ Russian names—but it’s got action, secrets, and stuff blowin’ up, so I stuck with it.

Clancy writes real smart, maybe too smart sometimes, but it’s still a dang good read if ya like twisty, sneaky stuff. No mushy love junk, just good ol’ spyin’.

4 catfish outta 5. Needed more pickup trucks.

This had it's moments, both good and bad. It shines in the action sequences, and drags in others. It's also a similar formula to the first Op-Center book, so hoping that changes with subsequent books.

Seemed very quick for a scenario. It also came off as a massive deus ex machina with very little character growth and definitely with a side plot of spies that had absolutely no bearing on the story aside from a return of the Jedi ending.
