Daniel grew up knowing that his family had a gift, and a curse no one else did. It wasn’t just the ghost of the family matriarch that haunted him. It was the shadow of witchcraft hanging like a cloud over his head. Ambition, he could have dealt with, protecting his little brother from the political games their father played. Until he saw its true nature for himself. To hurt or kill with just a touch. It was a world he didn’t want any part of after witnessing his father kill a man for some insignificant slight.
He fled rather than continue playing the game he had been taught since childhood. Only to find himself in the arms of a Calais, Maine teacher. And in the shadow of the illness that had always plagued his family, as much as the power did.
A great book and a moving story with an ending that I wasn't expecting, given the genre.
I haven't read any other books in the series yet, but I soon got into the swing of the characters and the connections between myths, legends, and everyday life. Mark has done a great job in creating a unique and interesting premise that has the potential to develop and go a long way.
Some of the character arcs were quite surprising, both in a good and at times sad way, but the story kept moving forward and pulled you in.
If it weren't for the typos and other grammatical errors, it would be five stars. However, if, like me, you can look past that and enjoy the story for what it is, I 100% recommend this.
This book had an interesting concept, that sadly didn’t quite live up to its full potential. There were wiite a few twists and turns in the multi-layered narrative that I lost track from time to time. There were quite a few typos which tended to detract from reader from the story, and lots of misused or words missing entirely. With a good editor on board, this certainly has potential.
