Hoodoo-influenced Southern Louisiana seems like the perfect place for Camille to escape her abusive past and dysfunctional family. She doesn’t expect to fall in love with the handsome Gavin Devereaux and plummet into the world of Amaranth, a place of exile for reformed vampires.
Wrestling to escape a deadly ex-boyfriend while giving Gavin a chance, Camille is confronted with decisions that threaten not only her life, but the lives of her inhuman friends she has come to love. Entangled in her friends’ quest for freedom, she dives into their realm and faces the threats of Amaranth’s ruler—the mother of all vampires—and her own inner demons.
Now Camille must decide whether she will derail her life and make the ultimate sacrifice for the monsters that interrupted her bumpy path back to sanity—what she still wants so desperately—or escape with Gavin before it’s too late for both of them.
During the high of the magical indie author era that swept the nation in 2012, Rachael Wade wrote over a dozen romance and fantasy novels about broken characters with tattered hearts. She has since then retired this pen name, so you won't find her on the socials anymore, but she still welcomes rights inquiries and messages from readers via Goodreads. Today she writes horror and suspense under a different name, though romance subplots still make cameo appearances in all of her stories.
I received this book to review for the ReadIt&Reap program in the ShutUp&Read group. Thanks to the mods and the author for providing this book for us to read.
Every time I start a new book/series that involves vampires I worry that I'm about to waste time reading the same story I've read so many times before. I love vampire stories, but they need to bring something fresh to the table, and be somewhat original for me to actually enjoy them. This book did that.
The first few pages of this book I struggled with. It quickly seemed like a story that I felt disinterested in, because it was the typical boy meets girl story. In a matter of two days the main characters become obsessed in love with each other, and I almost stopped right there. I kept reading because Camille was a genuinely interesting character, in my opinion. She has been abused, betrayed, abandoned, and more by people she loved and trusted. She was a broken woman, fleeing her problems, and just trying to get away from it all to live a normal life. Quite a relatable scenario in the sense that most woman don't actually flee the country to get away from our problems, but sometimes we would like to!
This author definitely has skills in character development. At first, we are introduced to this fragile, damaged woman, and after she finds out about the vampires she transforms into a sarcastic, more confident person. That's also right after her ex just tried to kill her in her sleep! She's still drawn and attracted to Gavin, but this time she's not just jumping into things so quickly. She demands answers. Gavin was okay as a character. I didn't love him or hate him. He was just nothing special in comparison to all of the men I read about each day. Audrey and Gabe were great. I really liked them.
The plot itself did go beyond expectations, and I was happy for that. Introducing real issues such as physical and emotional abuse to readers who may or may not know how that feels can be tough. I feel the author did a superb job with this. The adventure of going through Samira to enter Amaranth was exciting.
It a nutshell this is a pretty short, fast paced paranormal story that does keep you interested until the very end. It starts off rocky, but finds it's footing rather quickly. By the end of this book you will really want to know what's going to happen next. Very entertaining, enjoyable read, that I would recommend to all paranormal fans of any age. The quality of writing is high A wonderful start to an exciting series I look forward to continuing.
3.5 stars.
This is just a side note, but I love that Breaking Benjamin was mentioned. Loveeee them! One more sidenote: the cover is gorgeous!
What an amazing book I COULD NOT put it down it was a fascinating story and it flowed so lovely I was taken in from page one. This is a truly must read vampire book with love, excitement and adventure you will NOT WANT TO MISS!!
Camille has finally taken a step toward breaking away from her abusive relationship and dysfunctional family. A trip to Paris, where she has always longed to go, research for a book she longs to write (but has not even told her best about), and a "special" coat she spent way too much on, but it makes her feel happy and in control. It's here in Paris that she has a chance encounter with Gavin Devereaux. He somehow can tell she's searching for something and recommends that she move to Paris. This is too much of a leap for Camille, and while she is drawn to Gavin, she wanders through Paris on her own without ever contacting him again. She is, however, inspired by his suggestion...
A year and a half later, Camille is now living in Southern Louisiana. She has "improved" her life by leaving Seattle, is attending a university, and working at a local bookstore; at the same time, she has just traded one abusive relationship for another. The Hoodoo influences in the area have lead her to attempt to work spells and rituals herself to banish her newest, and worst, abuser yet. But nothing seems to work! She is still trying to rid herself of Andrew when her best friend finally visits for the first time from Seattle, and Gavin appears at the local bookstore. Still drawn to him, but without Paris to distract her, will she find what she has looked for in his arms? Despite what she may, or may not have been looking for, she finds herself drawn into a world she never knew existed: Amaranth, an exile world for vampires. Soon she must decide what path to follow and what price she is willing to pay. For all paths require a sacrifice.
What I Thought
I've never been this conflicted about a book before. I've waited a full 24 hours after finishing it, hoping that time and distance would clear up my thoughts and resolve my opinion, but to no avail. I so badly wanted to like this book, not that I dislike it... The best way I can describe what I think is to lay out the pros and cons. My overall rating fluctuates between 3 and 4 ♥'s. I can seem MANY people liking this book despite my ambivalence.
Pros: The characters are vivid, the description is impeccable, even the cover is so lovely. It is written very well, and one can't help but want to read the next in the series to find out just what happens. She really builds and entirely new world, with an interesting take on vampire "mythology". The main male lead, Gavin, is most definitely swoon-worthy. And I simply loved the small nods to Twilight and Johnny Deep (*sighs*).
Cons: Part of who Camille is, reads (to me) as a standard relationship abuse victim. She seems to define herself by the bad males she has paired herself with in the past. Granted, some of her "current" victim behavior is supernaturally enhanced... but enhanced or not it's there. She's a victim at heart, in my opinion, and I just don't like victims. Yes, she did take steps to break away from abuse but she seemed stuck in a cycle she was doomed to repeat no matter what steps she took. And her choices that she makes! It's been a while that I've read a book where I so badly wanted to reach through those pages and smack the main character (in this case, Camille,) around. ALOT! Because of these reasons, I never connected with her character. And her relationship with Gavin, while he is swoon-worthy, seemed to have that "instant love- just add kiss" syndrome. Maybe I've read too many books recently using this approach, but I wanted to really see more "falling in love". Maybe I've just become too jaded to "buy" what that syndrome seems to be selling to so many books. Additionally, the "blurb" of the book gives out far more spoilers than I would have given, had I written it.
It really is a book I can see so many people reading and enjoying; I know all readers do not have the same hang-ups that I do. Most likely, I will read the next because I want to know where the story is going to go- and hope- that Camille redeems herself as a character in my eyes. But on the other hand, I will also likely never read it again. I "erred" on the forgiving side for actual stars to appear on the overall review- but my heart is still not sold on 4 stars. There are still times that I want to just be evil and give it 3.
*UPDATE* I left the original review (above) untouched, but I wanted to add that upon reading book 2 in the Resistance Series, The Gates, I firmly hold to the 4 star rating for book 1 now. No more wobbling on the fence about my rating- 4 stars all the way. Book 2 was that good!
I purchased this book but didn't get a chance to read it until I received the second book for review and decided it was time to get my butt in gear and read this one first. (Holy run on sentence, Batman!) Let me tell you, putting it off was a HUGE mistake on my part.
I absolutely adore Camille and Gavin's story. The way they meet is the perfect love story type meeting and from there it just gets better. We are left in just the right amount of suspense about what will happen next and trust me, you won't put the book down until it's finished. It's just one of those reads that you'll stay up until 2am reading.
Generally I focus on the main characters in a story but the sub-plots are actually quite good in Aramanth. We get to meet some wonderful characters and follow them through their journey as well. This isn't your typical vampire novel and it gently leads you into this other world.. and you aren't sure if you want to leave.
Let me also mention that there is a point in the book where Camille mentions her love of my FAVORITE band, Breaking Benjamin. She definitely won brownie points with that.
My Cover Thoughts: I love the cover! There is a girl walking towards the bayou and it looks like she is searching for something. Will she find it?
My Thoughts/Review: Amaranth left me speechless! I loved this story from the minute I read it. It is a story about love and finding your inner self. Cam is running away from relationship after relationship when she decides she is going to Paris for a vacation. While there she meets a handsome guy and gets his number and promises to call him.
When she returns to the states she is right where she started and running away from another relationship until she sees Mr Paris in the book store where she works. He recognizes her and she feels like she knows him so she stares at him until he catches her and they begin to talk. She realizes who it is and sets a date up so they can go out. They go out and hit it off but there is something a little off about him because he always has her home by midnight. As the friendship grows Cam finds she needs Gavin more and more. That is until she finds out his secret and is devastated to know things go bump in the night. Gavin explains to her that he never meant for them to fall in love but he could not help it because he loves her and would not change them meeting for the world. Cam is soon thrust into a world unknown to others and guarded by very serious people who want to keep it a secret. She will do anything to keep her and Gavin together no matter what it is.
She will sell her soul to the devil if need be. She will conjure up some voodoo and hoodoo just to keep them together. But what will happen in the end to them, will they stay together? Will they go their separate way? One question remains will their love surpass monsters that go bump in the night?
Memorable Quotes: Page 32 Gavin speaking to Camille: ―Before you ask anything else, he ran his fingers through his hair cleared his throat, ―I have to say something, or I might never get the guts to say it again. ―Okay, just say it. I turned toward him, too. A little warning. This is going to come off strong for a first date. He chuckled, adjusted his shirt collar. Unnerved by the urgency in his voice, I nodded to encourage him. I sensed what this was like for him, the fear that opening up to me, someone he barely knew, would give me power over him. I also knew that every once in a while, that was so undeniably worth the risk. Maybe his confession, whatever it was, would make me feel better about breaking the news to him about Andrew. “I‘m completely crazy about you, Camille.” He moved in closer, his eyes assessed my reaction. ―I know there are details you didn‘t want to mention before ... things about the guy you left back in Seattle, and your mom. But I want you to know whatever it is you‘re still running from, you don‘t have to run from it anymore. You can talk to me. And I would never, ever, hurt you.
Advice: This is a vampire lovers must read! You will not be disappointed!
“I’m completely crazy about you, Camille.” He moved in closer, his eyes assessed my reaction. “―I know there are details you didn’t want to mention before ... things about the guy you left back in Seattle, and your mom. But I want you to know whatever it is you’re still running from, you don‘t have to run from it anymore. You can talk to me. And I would never, ever, hurt you.”
3.5 out of 5! I’d wanted to read Amaranth for a while so I was thrilled when Rachael Wade gave me a copy to review. Firstly, the cover is what initially attracted me to the book; take a look, isn’t it lovely? Then secondly after reading the blurb, I though vampires and hoodoo? That must be interesting. And now after reading the book, overall I generally liked it.
Camille is a 21 year old girl who travels to Paris in order to get away from her abusive ex-boyfriend. While in Paris she meets handsome and charming Gavin who she feels an instant attraction to but their meeting is quiet brief. After travelling around Paris, two years have passed and Camille has been living in Louisiana. She’s dated another abusive boyfriend who is currently her ex but he’s still trying to get her back. It’s then when is she working that she meets Gavin again and she is suddenly taken on a whirlwind of a relationship and she starts finding out things that she never thought possible existed.
I really did enjoy this book. It was definitely one I was looking forward to starting and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where the author now takes the rest of the series. From chapter one, I was taken on an enjoyable journey where I was intrigued to discover more of the world that Rachael has created. It was imaginable, realistic and the storyline is quiet unique. The characters were loveable and although I struggled to connect with Camille as much as I did with Gavin, I still really enjoyed how much their relationship developed. I loved how Gavin was so shy at times and came across quiet vulnerable too. The secondary characters were second to none, with Joel being one of my favourites. His sense of humour was amazing and I don’t think this book would have been the same without him. He definitely was a fantastic addition to this story.
The story line itself had quite a few laughs but also had a few sad times, so there was a good mix of emotions used. It was also full of excitement, romance and suspense. By the end of the book, the story has been left open in quite a few areas making us readers wanting more and boy, do I want more. Rachael has done a great job with Amaranth and I for one will look forward to reading future books by her.
Thank you to Rachael for giving me the opportunity to review this book.
Can this book be as wonderful and enchanting as its beautiful cover? Why yes, it most certainly can! :)
We follow Camille as she tries to escape an abusive past and make a new life for herself in Louisiana, but she has no idea what she’s in for when she meets the handsome and charming Gavin. Not only does he look familiar but he has an other-worldly aura about him. As Camille gets to know Gavin and his best friend Gabe, she is introduced to a world she never thought existed.
Camille is a woman after my own heart. She is emotional and damaged but at the same time she is incredibly smart and stronger than she realizes. I love a light and fun read as much as the next girl but Wade has the talent to introduce us to a new and mystical paranormal world while confronting important issues like physical and emotional abuse. This is a hard thing to do without making the book sound like a public service announcement, but the author managed to pull it off as well as give you a story every vampire lover is going to want to read! Filled with strong characters, fight scenes, humor and of course hunky vampires, this is one of my new favs! Mix in some revenge, an impulsive, love struck main character and a portal only open under the Crescent moon, and you are ready for Amaranth, a land of exile for Vampires who want to become human again. Once through Amaranth’s gates you can’t return to the human world and live under the rule of Samira, a ruthless witch turned vampire. When Gavin sets off to save the people of Amaranth and himself from his vampiric nature, Camille is convinced it’s a suicide mission and tries to save him. Along with a few friends, they must try to get out of Amaranth without dying first.
I managed to read this book in one sitting. Not because it was short but because it was so good! I love the idea of Amaranth, giving vampires an out if they wish to become human again. I’ve heard some say this seems far fetched but come on, it’s magic! Anything can happen. One thing I loved most was Camille and the others reactions to situations. I found the emotions and dialog to be the way I would react in the same situation. I’ve read so many books where the characters would whine when they shouldn’t, be calm when I feel the situation is upsetting and altogether miss what seems like the big picture, but Wade seemed to really think out the characters and put herself in their shoes. Amaranth contains all the elements I look for in a great paranormal novel and I’m glad I came across it. I’m excited to read the next books in the trilogy and hope you choose to follow Camille and Gavin’s story!
I will be honest, I was pretty skeptical at first. I haven’t had much luck lately with Indie authored books. But, when I found out that Rachael was giving away copies of the book in e-book form to bloggers, I couldn’t resist the indulgence. The following is my review of Amaranth by Rachael Wade, the first installment in the Resistance Trilogy.
Can You Judge a Book by its Cover?
Okay, so there are plenty of yucky book covers out there that house good reads but Amaranth has anything but a yucky cover – very beautifully designed. I also really liked how the cover art tied into the book itself. Not a lot of books do this. The same outfit worn by the main character, Camilla Hart, on the cover is also mentioned and worn inside the book. Very great tie-in!
Character Development
Lately, I have noticed a huge flood of vampire/fantasy/angel/demon romance books on the market. I have bought a few, read a few and have, outside of on series, been rather disappointed. Poor character development has become quite common in this genre – one-dimensional characters that have no motive, no depth and are sometimes downright annoying.
Not the case with Amaranth. Character development was very solid. Author Rachael Wade took you on an emotional journey. By the end of the book, I was completely engrossed in each of the main characters and had a pretty good glimpse of some of the minor characters.
Camilla Hart, especially, came to life for me. I could feel her fears, her desires and her doubts. I could see depth in them, feeling like I knew them, understood their inner struggles and inner desires just enough to make them seem alive.
Story Line
I could envision moments in the book – see them as if they were really happening. It was like reading one of those “true story” books, only better. The fantasy added that extra touch of excitement and surreal indulgence that most fantasy readers are highly addicted to.
Some readers may be taken aback by the story line in Amaranth. If you’re not into engaging books, then you probably won’t enjoy Amaranth. You have to take your time here and there – I believe it is part of the reason that the characters are so well developed – because Rachael makes you slow down a little to experience the book. You taste, see, hear and feel the sights, people and places. In my opinion, this has become a sad rarity in the vampire/fantasy fiction genre. The absence of it in many of my recent reads made Amaranth a refreshing experience.
While Rachael does slow you down so you can better experience the world of Amaranth, it does not drag on. There are ebbs and flows, crescendos and decrescendos in the book. The way Amaranth moves throughout the story line reminds me of classical music. Beautifully moving, taking the reader gracefully through every moment, speeding up when the excitement peaks but slowing down so you can indulge.
Originality
Amaranth was not your typical vampire romance book. Author Rachael Wade really made this genre her own, reminding me of a time that vampire romance books didn’t saturate the shelves of every book store. No copycatting found here – very satisfying since I read a lot of vampire fiction.
The Bad News?
Probably the only negative I noticed about Amaranth was the end hook. Author Rachael Wade left off in a place where the story peaks, leaving you hungry for more. This, of course, is how trilogy books are supposed to end…the “to be continued,” so to speak. Sadly, however, I am one of those really impatient readers. I want the next book immediately accessible to me so that I can keep reading! I found this especially true with Amaranth. Alas, I suppose I will just have to wait for the next installment…impatiently.
First we have Camille who is a Seattle college student in Paris escaping for her birthday to a long awaited dream to visit Paris. A chance meeting and cue sexy Gavin, however Camille is in no shape to be starting a relationship and this meeting is a brief intriguing encounter. Camille has an abusive boyfriend back in Seattle…
Next chapter we skip ahead 2 years to Camille working in a small Louisiana town and attending school. After returning home from Paris she finally got wise and ditched the scum. Now here is the aspect about the book that I didn’t care for at all… we find Camille again in an abusive relationship. I have seen with emotional, verbal, and physical abuse most of my life, knowing and loving a victim of this type of abuse I know firsthand the emotional fall out. I love that the author is bringing this up as I know lots of teenagers struggle with body image and self-confidence however this is a very tricky topic to write about in a young adult/adult romance novel. I think the character or her best friend needs to have a bit more knowledge on how to deal with a victim. In NO WAY am I saying the author condones or glorifies the subject, in any case I didn’t feel it captures enough outrage that this is going on… make sense? I hope so…
Then we are taken on a Journey of discovery with Camille as she breaks up with scum #2 and a whirlwind romance with the supernaturally sexy Gavin. Camille has to navigate through the discovery that vampires exist and that some are closer than she realized.
Now here is the other issue I have with the book, I didn’t connect with the characters or understand some of their actions. I didn’t get emotionally involved with the characters, but this could be quickly solved with an edit. Also this is the first in the series so I am extremely interested in what book 2 will bring in April. With all that being said I would still recommend this series, the world is unique and vampires are a bit different, not allot but enough.
I would recommend mothers read this with their older daughters; it is wildly entertaining and a chance to talk about a deeper topic. Rating - 3.5 Stars
P.S. I found this AMAZING looking model named Arthur Keller and I just couldn’t stop finding amazing pictures of him. The even better thing about sexy Gavin was he has a couple looks the casual look and the dressed to kill look, soooooo I have to show you both! Plus I happen to have found both looks! Enjoy…
Woohoo for Vampires with a Mission !!! This book wants me to actually visit Amaranth and see it for myself !!
Cover-speak : I absolutely loved this cover .. It has most of my favourites colors on it and also has this sparkly night-ish feel to it and once you are done reading the story you'll realise the significance of this bayou and why the girl is standing there .
Amaranth is the story of Camille , who runs away from her abused and broken life to start over again .The inspiration to do so comes in the form of Gavin , a man she accidently runs into on her trip to Paris . Then the story moves two years into the future and the reader is made known to the fact that Camille is going through another abusive relationship but is too scared to do anything about it . Enters Gavin ( again ) and brings in a fresh sprinkle of life and hope to Camille's life . But Gavin has secrets of his own . Secrets that could change their relationship for good or for worse !!
Things I loved about this book :
1) The storyline : Although we have read a lot of Vampire-based story , Amaranth definitely comes across as a new , exciting and riveting tale of love and loss . The part that really stood out for me was that this book is just not about fighting for your love , your soulmate but it was about redemption of an entire clan so to speak . I cant really get down to details here , because i highly doubt my abilities of keeping the story , atleast the major portion of the story under wraps. 2) Characters : I'm a sucker for Ass-kicking female leads , but not here . The hero of this story is definitely Gavin for me . The man and his past definitely makes me feel for him and the reader can totally connect with him on so many levels . His reasons and the missions he soughts to complete in order to avenge and bring about a change is completely justified . Camille on the other hand was .... Hmm , i dont how to actually put this , but i felt that at times she was little annoying and at times didnt really understand the seriousness of the situation around her , but then i also wouldnt blame her for her behaviour seeing how her life changes instantly . But later on she definitely came around as a stronger person . Other important characters include Gabe , Joel , Audrey and not to forget the evil queen !! 3) Untold Secrets and Mysterious Mysteries : I love books that concludes with unanswered questions , making the reader jolt or buzz around for the sequel to get those questions answered .. This book definitely had that kind of an ending . Questions left unanswered , situations left unknown .
Parting thoughts : On the whole , this book was an exciting read , showing vampire's in a different kind of limelight .There is a little humour added into the story as well not to mention the reference to a certain 'Pattinson Guy' . An absolute read for Vampire Romance lovers , this one's a good read !!!
Wow is my first and continued reaction. I literally could not put this book down, it is so intense, so endearing, so inspiring of empathy. What the protagonist Camille endures-and her exquisite talent at self-analysis-is riveting. Absolutely impossible to break away from this book. Without need for a spoiler, I can express this: Camille has a major crack in the foundation of her psyche. For whatever reasons, her inner strength and her intuition don’t seem to match up. What she is, is a magnet for domestic abusers, in her case relationship abusers, males who first build up their hold over her by verbal and psychological denigration, then “progress” to physical battering. Due to the quake faults in her psychological makeup, Camille gravitates to these, and magnetizes them; but when she encounters anyone who might be more “normal” and non-abusive, she can’t recognize that individual’s worth and tends to shunt him aside. Her only outlets seem to be a complete change of foundational beliefs, so that she can break away and then stay strong, on her own; or suicide; or enduring till one of these violent males eventually kills her. Not much of a choice, and to the reader, the only right option seems obvious; get real, get right, and get out.
But such a solution is not the way our heroine sees it: instead she turns to Hoodoo, the Southern Louisiana version of Voodoo as it has been practiced in Haiti and elsewhere. Camille intends to rely on protection spells to keep the abusers away and at bay-not legal protection orders-despite the fact that her local supplier insists there is more at stake than Camille realizes and that the protection spells may not stop the abuser’s advance. Where many modern-day women and girls would think first of abuse shelters, arrest warrants, and restraining orders, Camille heads for the paranormal resources: first, the Hoodoo spells; and then, the reappearance in her life of the sexy yet diffident Gavin Devereaux, whom she had first unexpectedly encountered two years earlier on a visit to Paris. Gavin, of course, is very much more than he appears. Camille is about to peel away a veil that has kept an entire different probability hidden from her-and she has tangled with powers greater than her own human strength.
This is a well- and carefully-thought-out novel, with skillful world-building, believability, and characters who ring with intensity and reality. The plotting (on both sides of the veil of reality) is extraordinary and very realistic-the reader will accept that any and all of it could actually come to pass. Whenever you begin this book, do set aside a block of time, for you won’t turn away from it till you’re finished, and you’ll find yourself longing for the next volume in the trilogy.
Camille has pretty bad taste in men. She fled her Seattle home for a Paris vacation, in order to escape an abusive boyfriend. And she followed him up with another winner once she moved to Louisiana. She is trying to turn her life around and break ties with Jerk #2 when Gavin shows up. He is a charming guy she met during that trip to Paris and she feels an undeniable attraction to him that seems to be mutual.
But there is much more to Gavin than meets the eye. He's actually a vampire, though it takes him a long time to share that information with her. And even though he grows to love Camille, he has to leave her not long after they realize the depths of their feelings. He's on a personal crusade to help his people and in order succeed, he must travel to another world, where she can't follow.
It didn't take me long to get invested in the story. The writing style was easy to follow and the pacing was good. Gavin is very likable and I found myself rooting for their relationship to work, if for his sake alone. I had a much harder time connecting to Camille. The first big turn off was in the moment she struggled to hide evidence of her abusive boyfriend to her best friend. I can't relate to a woman who would take a year to kick a guy like Jerk #2 to the curb. Then, when vampire stuff comes to light, she is inconsistent. She's angry; She wants to see Gavin; She loves Gavin; She can't be with Gavin; Then she can't be without Gavin. --On a side note, the developments with Camille's best friend seemed to come out of nowhere. I wish that had not been so abrupt. And by the way, I would have been a lot more pissed off with her than Gavin for how things went down... but I digress.
There is a lot more to the story than I have laid out here. And while I didn't love everything about it, I didn't want to put it down. There was nothing predictable about the storyline and I cared enough about poor Gavin to be invested in how things played out. I must warn you, though, that while there is romance, there is no sex. The book is part of a trilogy, though, so I'll hold out hope that it will come in the next installment. There is some resolution to the immediate story arc, but as the book ends, this tale is far from over. Almost 4 stars.
I received this as a part of the Read It & Reap program.
Overall this was a good read. The author did a great job in building a new world that kept me very interested. The story line was not predictable. I would find myself reading think “X” was going to happen, but then “Y” and “Z” would be the twist the author took. I liked being kept off balance.
I did have some questions with this story.
All that aside, I did enjoy the story. I think that other would really enjoy this one too and I wholly recommend it. I for one was slack jawed at the ending of the epilogue. It’s not often when a cliff hanger takes me by utter and complete surprise. Can you say I’m waiting on pins and needles for the next book? Heck yes!
I thought I'd try something different for this review - a reading diary. I'll also add a few overall thoughts at the end.
Initial Thoughts on Cover; I absolutely LOVE the cover. The colors & the text make it simple yet striking. A beautiful cover makes you want to read the book. Oh, and purple and blue are my favorite colors!
Initial Thoughts on Summary; Geez. Anything on vamps means I'm game.
14% I love when a book captures you from the start. Something about the writing, the setting, the characters, it just grabs you. I hated to stop to write this.

87% Omg, noooo!
Overall Review
Okay, wow. I really liked this book. Amazing. I cannot wait for 'The Gates' (I'm on the arc list - woooohoo)
Rachael is an amazing writer.
She has created such a real to life heroine in Camille. I felt for her through the entire book.
The plot is great. Rachael weaves romance and mystery and action together perfectly. I found myself picturing everything that was happening.
and last but not least she has created a very swoon-worthy male lead. Gavin is mysterious and sexy and very passionate about Cam!
Overall, I really liked this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes vampires, action and romance!
This book was far from "just another vampire book." Camille is the mail character and tends to get into bad relationships...she dreams of finding that one perfect relationship. When Gavin steps into her life, she just might have a chance. Her last relationship was horrible, filled with abuse. She is still recovering...and he is still after her. She wants to believe Gavin could be her special someone, but Gavin has a shadowy past.
The story does contain that girl meets vampire and they have the potential to fall in love theme, but Wade makes the story seem more unique than the plot sounds. The characters are really fun to get to know. Camille is smart, brave, and interesting. Gavin is charismatic, protective, and suave. The secondary characters, particularly Camille's best friend, all have differing characteristics that make them stand out. The reader will be rooting for Camille throughout the novel and booing Camille's ex. The events are fast-paced, the reader won't be bored. The reader will not be able to wait for the next novel in this series! This book is recommended to young adults/adults.
This book was simply amazing. One of my favorites I have read this year. Not only was it a great vampire novel, but it also showed that women can overcome domestic violence. I loved how Camille was strong enough to back out of not only one abusive relationship, but two. Camille was without a doubt my favorite character. She was a bad ass in the way she always stood up for herself and never showed any fear, even when facing Samira, the evil ruler of Amaranth. I wish that the author would have given the reader more of a back story on Audrey and Gabe, but that might happen in the next book. The story left off on a cliffhanger. It made me very excited to learn what happens next. I can't wait for book two, The Gates to be released.
Klişe dediğimiz türden bir vampir kitabı. Ama ben başlarda beğensem de sonlarda sıkıldım.. Bölük pörçüktü olaylar. Saçma geldi.. Gavin bir plan yapıyor. Sonra ne yaptığı belli değil.. Camille'nın ne yaptığı belli değil.. Hızlı hızlı saçma bişiler oldu ama ben bişi anlamadım. Yani Amarant şehrinin amacı bile saçma... Pehhh olmamış :P
First of all, let me say the cover is beautiful. It was what drew me to the book in the first instance. I am a big lover of purple and blue, as many of you know already. I love the fact that the red dress provides a stark contrast to the ethereal feeling background. Honestly, big love to the cover artist, Robin Ludwig Design Inc!
I was being nosey on Twitter (as some of you now know I am a lot) and I came across Rachael. This was a few months ago now and I was intrigued by the look of AMARANTH. I asked her if she wanted me to review it on exchange for a free e-book copy. Luckily for me, she said yes. (I would have bought it at some point anyway no doubt). I haven't actually had chance to pick it up until now and I have been feeling guilty about that. But in a way I am glad I had to wait a while. This is simply because I am so desperate for the release of The Gates and now I don't have to wait so long in between books :) When I first asked Rachael for a copy, I read the blurb so that I knew what it was about. But by the time I picked it up a couple of months down the line, I had totally forgotten. I could have easily picked up the paperback that Rachael sent me, but I was too lazy to go to the bookshelf. So I went into it totally blind, not knowing what I could expect. By the fact that it says Resistance Trilogy #1 in brackets after the title, it gave me cause to think it might be a Dystopian novel. But when I picked it up, I realised I was wrong. I thought that maybe it was a romance. But was proved wrong on that count too.
What was it? I hear you ask. Well, read on for my review and see for yourself :)
Camille realises she needs to leave her abusive boyfriend and put her dysfunctional family behind her. Louisiana seems like the perfect place to do both of those things. Or at least one would think so. That is until Andrew, another abusive boyfriend, comes on the scene. Just what is it about Camille that attracts the deadbeats and the abusive? I mean, she's a sweet, sensitive girl. She deserves to be with someone wonderful who treats her with the utmost of respect and decency. But no, wherever she goes, it seems she is destined to attract the bad ones like a magnet.
So when Gavin Devereaux comes along she is most pleasantly surprised that he is not only very handsome looking, but also a loving, caring man. He's not one of these with a dark and murky past full of secrets. Is he?
Camille's best friend Audrey comes from Seattle to visit her and finds herself attracted to Gavin's friend Gabe. So for the fortnight that she is visiting, the two couples double date. Everything's goes well. Except for the fact that the boys always have them back at Camille's house for midnight.
At this point I was thinking to myself; Why on Earth would they have to get them back for midnight? Thankfully, it wasn't too long until I found out.
Gavin does have a secret after all. But it isn't anything that Camille could have imagined.
This secret plunges Camille into the world of vampires. There she is faced with decisions that threaten her life and more importantly to her, the lives of those she loves.
Those she loves must go to the city of Amaranth on their quest for freedom. But their journey will not be an easy one.
At this point, I feel like I shouldn't tell you any more about their journey. I could talk about the things that happened and how they made me feel. But I feel this incredible journey is something that you must discover for yourself.
Throughout this entire book, there were ups and downs, highs and lows. It was a fantastic journey from beginning to end. The only thing I disliked was the fact that it had to end. I cannot wait until The Gates (The Resistance Trilogy #2) is released so that I can pick up where I left off. I can't even begin to describe to you how I felt reading AMARANTH because I am afraid that if I do, it will be too spoilery. All I can really say is, there were times when I laughed, but also times when I cried. I felt I could relate to Camille for a few reasons. Having had a dysfunctional family growing up myself and having had an abusive ex I needed to escape, I could totally feel her pain as though it were my own.
I absolutely love the way Rachael Wade writes. She created some wonderful, lovable characters. I really felt an empathy for Camille and what she was going through. Audrey was the perfect best friend. You need someone like her in your life. As for Gavin? Ooo everybody needs a Gavin. Tall, dark, handsome and a remarkably nice person to boot. I would love me a real life Gavin Devereaux.
As for the bad guys? Yes, of course I hated the bad guys. But the one good thing I can say about them is that they were totally believable. Sometimes an author goes out of their way to create the 'absolute bad guy'; Rachael Wade made them real. Andrew was creepy, abusive, aggressive and rotten to the core. He had no redeeming features, except for the fact that Rachael made him real. There really are guys out there like him.
So, high praise from me to Rachael for a stunning first book in the trilogy. I cannot wait to read the next two, but at the same time, don't want it to end.
Thank you Rachael for the chance to review this book. I am eternally grateful.
I really and truly loved this book! It was so different from what I usually read in the fantasy genre.
I liked the main character Camille Hart. She was insecure and vulnerable through most of the book which wasn’t a bad thing. The main reason being that Camille was a victim in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend Andrew; she is trying to find herself through all the chaos. I also enjoyed the Side characters a little more to tell the truth especially Camille’s best friend Audrey. She is what I would call a true friend because she has tried to help Camille get out of her boyfriend’s abusive ways. At the beginning I was so wrapped up in Camille’s story that I totally forgot that this was book was supposed to have some fantasy and paranormal elements. So when the fantasy elements came into play I was blown away!
As Camille tries to break away from her abusive boyfriend who continues to stalk her and won’t take no for an answer she meets Gavin Devereaux. He is dark and handsome and only has eyes for Camille. As Gavin and Camille’s relationship continues to grow things become more supernatural when Gavin tells Camille that he is a vampire as well her best friend Audrey. Then things get really interesting when the rest of the supernatural beings are introduced and boy there are a lot of twist and turns from then on. The story really takes off and there’s a huge amount of romance and action to satisfy my needs! I really loved Joel’s character he was super sweet and hot!
This book will keep you guessing till the very end! Rachael Wade really took her time with all the characters and I loved how you couldn’t tell this was going to be a paranormal read in the beginning and then when the fantasy came it was amazing! I Loved Loved the amazing twist at the end of how all the characters are connected it was really shocking and I wanted to read more! This book totally took me by surprise and its hard to believe this is her first book!
Recommend to: Twilight and Evermore(but way better than Evermore )

3.5 out of 4 stars
I enjoyed this book. If I say that with a slight note of surprise, it's because that, indeed, I was pleasantly surprised.
It's a story of vampire meets girl and they both fall in love, and they both face challenges to be together. With so much out there with the same type of plot, it is really difficult not to make comparisons.
This book was shorter that I thought it would be. It was a quick read. But it should have been a longer book. There was room for more, and it was needed. I really didn't connect with the world of Amaranth; I needed more information to really envision what this place was, and how it came to be. And this Queen that rules it - what an interesting character. I know the book did not revolve around her, but she felt like an integral part of the story, and I wish there was more character development with her, and who she was.
The 1.5 year span between the first chapter and the second threw me off a little bit. I wasn't sure why it was necessary and left me scratching my head a little bit. Same to the scene where Camille gets whisked off to London in a flash by her protector, with no explanation as to how they got there in the time that they had. I had to reread a couple of pages back, thinking that I missed something, but I hadn't.
Besides these small points, the novel kept my interested from beginning to finish. The main characters were well developed and believable. I felt empathy for our main female character through her emotional upheavals, that being with her abusive relationships. I enjoyed her blossom as she began her new romance with Gavin.
I really enjoyed how the author used and wrote the action scenes. They were fluid. I could play them out in my head. And that, to me, is important in connecting with a story.
Rachel Wade did a great job. I think this is her first published novel, and I congratulate her for this great first effort.
How could I not love this story. What a great new take on vampires! I was a little lost at first, but didn't take long for me to get what was going on. The story begins with our heroine, Camille, roaming the streets of Paris when she first meets our hero, Gavin. Let me tell you right now, I fell in love with Gavin FAST. The book then fast forwards two years later. We find Camille in Louisiana trying to get out of yet another toxic relationship with an arse named Andrew. However, this current relationship isn't like any other she's had in the past. No matter how hard she tries, she just can't shake this bad apple. Then one day, Gavin walks into her bookshop and the sparks reignite once again between the two. A relationship quickly erupts between Gavin and Camille. However, both have their secrets. Camille has yet to figure out how to permanently get out of her toxic relationship with Andrew. While Gavin is trying to hide the fact that he's a vampire. Things sure hit the fan when Gavin finally meets Andrew and everyone's secret is revealed. Things just get more interesting after this.
We get to find out more about Gavin's world of vampires. It isn't a hunky-dory world. Its a world ruled by a manipulative Queen with rules that Gavin and others are trying to change. The resistance is starting, with Gavin, and now Camille, in the thick of things. Things get really fast paced towards the end of the book and the author leaves us hanging with twist after twist. How could you Rachael? lol. Well, all I can say is that I can't wait til the next installment of this refreshing trilogy. Well done my dear! Well done!
I received a copy of this book from the ReadIt&Reap program in the ShutUp&Read group here on Goodreads. This is an excellent program in which authors provide free copies of their ebooks, in exchange for honest reviews.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. Amaranth is a short, fast paced adventure. From the beginning, Camille is a very likable, relatable character. She is shy and just getting out of an mentally and physically abusive relationship. The secondary characters (Gavin, Audrey, Gabe, and Joel) are devoted and completely lovable. The mythology, although a little jumbled at times, is a refreshing new take on vampires. I love the idea that the curse is moon based and, in certain circumstances, can be lifted.
I do take issue with a couple of things. First the continuity leaves a little to be desired. Chapter 2 takes place 1.5 years after Chapter 1, without any indication. The book seemed to skip right over the falling in love aspect, and it was kind of 'insta-love' for me. I suspended belief and went with the love as part of the story. Secondly, a pet peeve of mine in books is when the less knowledgeable character thinks he/she knows best and knowingly jumps into life or death situations. I find this completely out of human nature and it happened in a big way towards the end of this book.
After information that is revealed in the Epilogue, I am definitely looking forward to finding out what happens next! I give Amaranth 3.5 stars.
I love a good vampire story and Amaranth didn’t disappoint. It gave a fresh new twist on a time old tale of love, death, and ever after. I was captured by the grace of the opening chapters in Paris where we find our young heroine reinventing herself, falling for the beauty of Paris and of a handsome gentleman who stumbles across her literally in the café.
Her return to the states was a bit disjointed for me. The character development was good and I enjoyed the lovely description Louisiana, however the story seems rushed missing some vital information. I was lost on how Camille’s best friend visiting from Seattle was just suddenly lost from the story and discovered just as suddenly as the vampire lover of Gabe. How is it ok for Audrey and not Camille? The entire concept of Amaranth is not well explained.
Enter Amaranth and the entire story changes shape and pace. Fast and exciting with several twists and turns make the end of this book outstanding. I was captivated by the growing love you could feel between Camille and Gavin real and not imagined, very well written. The end is just the beginning and I am anxious to begin the next chapter…
This little gem took me by surprise on two counts. One because it was very good and the other, because I read it based purely on the cover. In fact, I never even read the short synopsis posted so I had no idea what it was about and the title gave me absolutely no clue, since the word amaranth is a plant often cultivated for food and cereal in Central and South America. (I admit, I had to look that one up to be sure, I knew it had something to do with plants). The name, Amaranth, and the cover intrigued me so much I had to read the book. I know you’re not supposed to base a book on its cover, but this time you can.☺
I find it fun sometimes to read a book not knowing anything about it. It really makes the journey, somehow, more magical, so I won’t tell you much about it and the beginning didn’t give me much of a clue either, but I was drawn in immediately from the very first paragraph. Amaranth is an enjoyable, quick read (mainly because I couldn’t put it down) with a lot of twists, which I love. Great job, Ms. Wade, I am looking forward to the next book in this trilogy.
Again another amazing cover. The cover art is always an eyecatcher for me. This book took me on a rollercoaster ride from beginning to end. I loved Camille she has the makings of a good heroine. I loved that she has no problems realizing a bad situation and moving on from it. Its refreshing to have heroines that stand up for themselves and aren't so codependent. I loved having Louisana as the backdrop for this story as it is such a place of mystery and intrigue. I could imagine vampires being able to blend in well here. Amaranth sounds like such a beautiful place too eventhough the evil lurks there. The author was so descriptive with her writing that I was imagining in my head with the wonderful colors and graphics. The character of Gavin needs to grow on me a little though. I didnt like that he hid so muchof himself until he had no choice but to tell Camille. I do like his love and loyalty to Camille, his friends and the memory of his parents. I am looking forward to book 2 in this series.
Thanks to the ladies at Shut Up & Read Group for this review.
I loved this book! Its your classic paranormal romance. Camille is 21 and went off to Paris to escape, if only for a while, her abusive relationship with her now ex-boyfriend. While there she walks, literally, into Gavin. And he is gorgeous! Two years later life is as normal. While definitely getting away from her ex, states away, she found herself yet again in the break up stage from another abusive relationship. Trying to avoid Andrew, the almost ex, she runs into Gavin at the book store she works at. As their relationship takes off, a dark secret comes out. Not only is Gavin not what he appears, but neither is everyone else she thought she knew. Camille is terrified and angry. But Camille is also in love, and can't give up her best friend Audrey. As she plunges deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole Camille is faced with all new dangerous and foreign obstacles. This book had me laughing, crying and on the edge of my seat. Can Camille get a grasp on this new reality? Will love prevail? Read on to find out! I know I can't wait until the next book.
3*s A good first book in a new series with a slightly different take on vampires. This is just the start so we only just delving into the characters and plot and it felt like it was over just as it was getting started and i wish i had the 2nd book to continue straight away. The set up of the plot is good and held my interest, I want to know more ! I want a lot more from the relationship between Camille & Gavin, more couple time to really get a feel for them emotionally. I also want more of Gabe & Audrey and hoping theres a way around what supposedly happened to a certain someone toward the end because i want more from that character too especially after the meeting at the end and the disclosure.... yes , I know i'm rambling about what I want which basically boils down to MORE ! As I said a good start and i'll be putting the sequel on my TBR list :)
I got this book to review through the Read It & Reap project.
This was a fun read. Perfect to while away some unused hours while riding a train.
Personally I thought the relationship between Gavin and Camille went a bit too fast from first/second meeting to I-am-willing-to-give-up-my-whole-life-for-you, but that is probably just a question of personal reading taste.
The ending was a bit abrupt and I am not really buying that . I've read far too many superhero comic books to believe something this drastic that is not witnessed. And even then it's not always a sure thing.
That said, I am glad there is more than one book to this story. I just want to know what happens next.
I thought that this was a really good book. I liked how the author kept me engaged with all the twists and turns. I really enjoyed the romance between Gavin and Camille. It was sweet. The novel was a relatively quick read. The idea of that alternate world was fascinating. This book reminded me a lot of the Twilight Series. The relationship between Gavin and Camille was very reminiscent of Edward and Bella. The fact that Gavin wanted to "save" her from himself. I am a Twilight fan, so that is probably another reason why I like The Resistance Trilogy.
