Lucas Malet is the pseudonym of Mary St. Leger Kingsley (4 June 1852 – 27 October 1931), Victorian novelist.

She was the daughter of Charles Kingsley, author of The Water Babies. In 1876 she married William Harrison, Minor Canon of Westminster, and Priest-in-Ordinary to the Queen.

La data di pubblicazione (siamo ormai quasi nel 1920) e lo strano pseudonimo mi hanno fatto temere di trovarmi a leggere uno di quei sottoprodotti letterari che vanno sotto il nome di 'romanzi rosa'. Per mia fortuna, sono stata smentita. Le descrizioni, l'ambientazione, la scrittura hanno tutto il fascino e la perfezione formale di uno dei migliori prodotti letterari di età vittoriana.
