Fenton was born in a remote village during a raging storm. Bad omens surround his birth. He grows up alone, understanding from an early age that he is not the same as the other children. He does not fit in. Then he meets Alec; another young man who doesn't belong. Hope, loss and banishment ensue as they try to carve a life for themselves in a world that forbids their love. But is love ever enough, or will Alec always want more? Kali understands. Kali knows that there is only one true desire in this the desire for blood. Kali offers Fenton something that he has been searching for his entire perfect companionship, and complete understanding. But can Kali really give Fenton what he needs, or is he just like all the others? ' The Loneliest Vampire' is a 'Lost Realm' 9,300 word short story. Revised and expanded 2012.
Sooo. I really loved this look into Fenton. I'd contemplated skipping it bc I wanted more of Ash and Azrael, but it was so short, I don't. And I'm so glad. I thought it have more depth to a side character and I'm hoping to foreshadowed for later books in the series.
Wow, the title couldn’t be more appropriate for this story. Unfortunately, I jumped into this book without having read any of the trilogy that it belongs to, so I’m guessing that some things would be more clear and that potentially Fenton finds his love interest, but as a standalone it was sad. Basically, Fenton is adrift throughout the story – being interested in no one and nothing except for a blood craving once turned into a vampire – his life really has no meaning. Not sure I’m hooked enough to seek out the actual trilogy…
I felt so sad for Fenton. I mean poor guy is just trying to find himself and feel. Fenton is born special. He goes off with his friend so he doesn't lose him and than is humiliated. His friend walks away and Fenton starts over lost and alone. He meets someone and thinks this is it and for awhile it is but that goes by the wayside as well. Fenton does get bitter. He gets angry but does in a way understand.
So Fenton goes and goes but suddenly hears about someone who may help him. Help him feel. help him desire. help him love question is will he? I don't know but I am interested in finding out.
Kate Aaron has written a interesting take on this lonely vampire who is just trying to feel something anything.
This is a bit difficult to rate, as it is a short story and obviously part of the worldbuilding for a larger series.
The rendering of Fenton's asexuality was quite on the dot and it made him the perfect victim to Kali as well as himself.
I loved that these vampires do not glitter, have to stay out of the sun (as proper vampires have to do) and else appear to be rather more like pre-Twilight vampires than post that drivel. I'm interested in reading more Fenton.
Interesting premise... asexual personality. First time I've ever read anything like this and was surprised at what Fenton had to deal with. It must be so lonely to be so out of sync with everyone else. The story was good, but it's leading into another story and I was all set to read more. Can't wait to find out what's happening next. Recommended. =============================== 1st read - Sep 2011 2nd read - Jun 2015
I need to go.back and read the first book. Not sure why I skipped it. I think there is more background info that would be interesting, though not really necessary to enjoy this story. I really wish there was more detail and meat to the story of Fenton's existence. Things started really rolling along, then it ended, which I found a little disappointing. However, I am interested enough to read the other two books.
This is really short about 15 pages and it was free on the allromance site. This is an odd story about the human then quickly turned vampire life of Fenton who was gay/asexual. There is a hint that he may found a fey price named Skye to fall in love with, to finally feel something. Cute with some short sexy scenes, but always with a distance because Fenton never has normal 'feelings'. 2 stars
This was a quick and easy read featuring an asexual main character. I haven't read any of the other books in the series but I don't feel that I really needed to to enjoy this book. Fenton was an interesting and I'd love to know more about him. I don't know if I'll buy the series since I am unsure how often Fenton features in it.
When I saw that this story and the next work in the series, Fire & Ice, were tagged “asexual,” I decided to give them a shot. I wanted to see how an asexual character would be handled. Since I hate reading series out of order, I bought the first work, Blood & Ash, as well. If you've been keeping track of my recent reviews, you already know I was disappointed by Blood & Ash. Fenton: The Loneliest Vampire (hereafter, FTLV) wasn't an improvement.
A big part of the problem was that FTLV was not actually a story, but rather a series of events connected by lots of summarizing. It began with Fenton's birth, and it wasn't until halfway through that he became a vampire. The last half of FTLV spanned several centuries and ended not long before the start of Blood & Ash. I think FTLV would have been much stronger if Aaron had focused on one particular event, such as Fenton's time with Kali. All that summarizing really weakened the story, and the portion focusing on Fenton's time as a human felt unnecessarily long.
When I first started planning out this review, I thought I would at least be able to say I liked Fenton better than Ash, but that wasn't really the case. True, Fenton didn't annoy me the way Ash did, and I found him to be more interesting. However, it was the idea of him that interested me more than anything. I loved the idea of an asexual main character who still wanted love, but wasn't interested in or comfortable with expressing that love via sex. It was too bad that "asexual and lonely" seemed to be all Fenton was.
Part of me is looking forward to seeing the development of an asexual relationship between Fenton and Skye, which reviews tell me will be happening in at least part of Fire & Ice. Unfortunately, I have little faith that Aaron will be able to make the characters and their relationship as complex and interesting as they should be.
Additional Comments:
The bit at the end, about Azrael's torture at the hands of some witches, only emphasizes how surface-level the characters in this series are. In Blood & Ash, Azrael is captured by witches again while trying to save Ash. Was there any mention of his previous capture and torture? No. I didn't even know about it until I read FTLV. There should have been some mention, maybe even some residual emotional effects.
Fenton and Alec have been friends since they were little, now 18, Fenton knows that Alec loves him. He lets the other boy kiss him and touch him, but nothing more, bcs he yes, loves Alec, but not the same as Alec. Fentom didnt want to experience sex and never had. We see the two guys leave their village and go to work on a ship. Alec tries to make Fenton have sex with him, but he always says no. One day another man arrives on the ship and he and Alec fall in love, too late Fentom will understand what is happening btw the other guys. The boy decides to leave the ship and he will go in search of something he doesnt even know what it is. Walking in the city, a whore(man), pulls him in a dark corner, where there is a bed, and they have sex. Fentom loses his virginity, but he doesnt feel anything, he still doesnt understand what Alec felt, but at the same time he still misses him.In his journay he will met a vampire that will become his maker, his name is Kali. They spend centuries together, but always being just friends, till one day the older vampire gets bored and finds another companion. Fenton then leaves again and tries all the thing in the world, sex with men and women too, but he is still lonely, still different from the others, maybe like his maker said he misses his love, that special person he still hasnt found. In the end of the book we see how he hears the story of a brave fae prince, that saved Azrael from his kidnappers (seems he likes to get kidnapped), and something is him changes. He now wants to find that man, bcs he is sure that is that special person.
Thoughts: I pity Fentom, he doesnt understand what he wants till he loses it, and maybe his cursed too. He didnt make love to the man he loved, but then he has sex with a random whore. (at last was single not like Azrael) The book is short, but was better then the first one. I hope the 2nd book will have a nice story, not just meaningless sex.

Glad this was free for my Kindle because I was very disappointed. Fenton is a young man who just doesn't understand the attraction of a sexual relationship. His friend, Alec, tries to tempt him into a sexual relationship. When they are discovered by Fenton's father the young men run away to sea. After two years of sharing a hammock and light sex play (but not actual sex) Alec finds another. Fenton leaves the ship, loses his virginity to a male prostitute, then is seduced (asexually) into vampirehood. Centuries pass in this short story before Fenton is intrigued by another creature. The story ends with Fenton happily looking for the fae prince, Skye. Not recommended.
Reading this short story made me feel like I was reading the background notes an author makes to do their character background and world-building. It was interesting but I never felt like I got to know the main character. Throughout the centuries that this story entails, there is no depth to the MC. If this was to give the reader a sense of the MC's loneliness, then it doesn't really work. It just made for a flat main character.
I received this for free through an offer from the author on a Goodreads forum.
