This is the most current text on child and adolescent development for teachers available on the market. Covering early childhood through high school in an easy-to-follow format, the book provides teachers with authentic, research-based strategies and guidelines for their classrooms. A strong emphasis on diversity among children is reflected throughout. The authors specifically apply child development concepts to topics of high interest and relevance to teachers, including social-emotional development, classroom discipline, humor, constructivism, and many others. Case studies and real-world vignettes further bridge the distance between research and the classroom, helping students be better prepared to create an environment that promotes optimal development in children.
this textbook was racist, sexist and transphobic, espoused an extremely america-centric worldview that testing = the only way to teach, learn and assess. it was very slut-shamey also, revealing a cultural mindset that was like. not explicitly christian but easy to see the christian values it takes for granted (commonlaw parents are not as good as married parents; teens having sex is just as bad as teens doing violence and drugs). just overall, quite out of touch. that said, it has given my education cohort much pleasure to bash this book, and we have bonded very much over our mutual hatred of it.
I used this textbook for one of my undergrad courses, and surprisingly this text provides thoughtful organization and an easy-to-read and understand format. It gives relevant comparisons and real-life examples to material discussed throughout the text and I thought that each domain was explained clearly and adequately.
