It is interesting that I came to know about this book because the author lives by his own rules. I tried to connect with him in a terrible "I'll add you to my LinkedIn network because we're part of the same group but without actually making proper effort to ask anything about you" kind of way.

The author instead started a useful conversation by inviting me to ask him questions if I had any. I did. And he answered them with such though and consideration that it nudged me to look him up in greater detail and I found that he had several books. (He had made no mention of these or "selling" of anything whatsoever in our interaction).

AND I'm now recommending his book for any who is interested in growing their business through referrals and recommendations and improving the effectiveness of their networking. I was originally going to say I'd recommend it to anyone "new to networking" (as I am!) but actually a lot of networking old hats do it very unproductively so it's just as helpful even if you've been doing it for a while.

A very practical book that gives you action steps as well as an understanding of how to improve your strategy. And it comes across as unselfish as it recommends that you be in order to grow your business in a sustainable way that adds value to those around you.

The business of selling both ourselves, our products and services seems to have come full circle. In the old days before supermarkets we would buy everything we needed from the local store, we knew who the traders were, we knew the people that would be able to best solve our problems. Then came mass marketing and mass shopping, suddenly the rules of the game changed and we were buying on price; often ending up unhappy with the end result.

With the advent of social networking online, we are once again becoming used to buying the things we want and need based on recommendations and suggestions from our friends. We are once again familiar with the reality and practicality of the ‘recommendation’.

This change has been a boon for the experienced networker, whose skills are honed to within an inch of their life. But what about those people who have yet to tread the networking boards, who know that ‘word of mouth selling’ is important but don’t know what to focus on or where to start? Enter Andy Lopata and Recommended. This book is brilliant for both beginner and ‘expert’ alike; through practical step-by-step processes with excellent advice and stories to illustrate his explanations. This is definitely a ‘must read’ for everyone who is engaged in word of mouth selling, whether of their own books, products or services or someone elses.

I found this to be an excellent explanation about how to gain and best use referrals as a way to sell and grow a business. As a whole I don't read a huge number of sales books, but for anyone who runs their own business sales are obviously critically important. Lopata has written a really practical guide, that rings true as you read it. I found myself on several occasions thinking "aha - that's what I've been doing wrong". Best of all this is not difficult to put into practice. It is one of those books that reminds you that common sense is often far from common!

Before reading Andy's book I thought I was a good networker and well connected. Andy takes networking to a whole new level. He talks about developing quality connections and getting recommended instead of offered leads. He explains his step-by-step process giving practical advice and telling you quite a few interesting success stories along the way. A must read for anyone in business in the 21st century.

Fantastic book witch explains the concept of referals in a simple and and easy format. Love the extra touch of how the author used his own network in how the books was done!
