How to Manage: The Art of Making Things Happen

Rate this book
This is the ultimate `how to' of management, covering all the vital hard and soft skills of management but in a readable, witty and wise form. This unique book contains all the critical information found in large manuals but delivers it in the preferred more inspiring and personal form of a readable handbook. As every frontline manager knows, the theory of management is one thing but the actual day-to-day real life experience can be something else. In the real world, busy managers need to know what to do and how to be as effective, productive and successful as possible. This is the first book to cover the 30 essential hard and soft skills of a `manual' but in a readable, easily absorbed and insightful way. If you're only going to read one book on management ever, this is it.

Jo is the first person to be awarded the CMI gold medal three times, for Mindset of Success; How to Manage and Leadership Skills Handbook.

He practices what he preaches as a leader: he has started seven NGOs with a collective turnover above $100million annually. He was a partner at Accenture; he started a bank, was sued for $12 billion and was the best nappy (diaper) salesman in Birmingham.

His research on leadership has taken him to the ends of the earth and resulted in Tribal Business School: what modern business can learn from traditional societies. He has worked with over 100 of the best , and a few of the worst, organisations on our planet and has interviewed everyone from spies to sportspeople as well as leaders around the world to find the essence of leadership.

His latest work is on Global Teams, which is the first book to look at the plumbing of globalisation: how global teams do and do not work.

I used to hate books about management. Even before starting reading this book I had my doubts.

I gave it a chance based on recommendation from Jozef and I was amazed how perfect the structure of the book and content is handled.

Theory is effectively combined with practical examples and while going from the chapter to chapter I could immediately identify mistakes I was continuously repeating in my work, change them and use different approach for execution.

If you deal with management of people, or if you start your first job, you are going to make huge mistake if you don’t go through this book right away.

Many of the chapters are well written and useful but the part on "PQ", political intelligence, is just depressing and suggests that to be a good manager (or at least to succeed) you have to leave your ethics at the door.

Good, educational and simple book that covers a lot of important things but also provides good examples.

Добра идея, има какво да се вземе от съдържанието, НО превода и/или редакцията на български език са провалили повечето послания на книгата. Въпреки това извлякох полезни съвети от написаното...

Definitively one of the best book I've read on the subject. Very little academic content as this book wont teach you how to manage your budget but rather how to not get stuck with a bad budget in the first place... I love how the book was separated in 3 main sections: IQ, EQ and PQ covering the main tasks of a manager/leader with an emphasis on getting things done. Nowadays when people read EQ they assume some "touchy feely" content, definitively not the case here, reading and understanding people interest in a project is crucial at alI level. I will definitively re-read and take notes as there is a ton of useful material that was eye opening for me in my current role.

First half was similar to many other books and didn't add much info, but some insights and more interesting discussions took place in the second half.
