Rate this book
Over 40 powerful explanations proving the Bible is still accurate and without error! Can God be Tempted? Why don't Christians follow all the Old Testament laws? Is marriage good or bad? All these and more are questions that appear to point out a problem in the biblical text. Too often people focus on what seems to be contradictions or errors in the Bible, using them to create doubt in the minds of believers or act as stumbling blocks in trying to present the Gospel. It is important to resolve these issues to reassure people that the Bible is inerrant.

Dr. Ken Ham is the president of Answers in Genesis USA and is a well-known speaker and author on the subject of Young-Earth Creationism. He received a bachelor degree in applied science (emphasis on environmental biology) from the Queensland Institute of Technology, and a Diploma of Education from the University of Queensland. He has also received two honorary doctorates: a Doctor of Divinity from Temple Baptist College, and a Doctor of Literature from Baptist Liberty University.

He was a director of Creation Science Foundation (CSF) in Australia, an organization which he jointly founded with John Mackay. In 1987 he moved to the United States, still maintaining his links with CSF.

From 1987 to 1993, Ham worked for the Institute for Creation Research, and in 1994 set up what in 1995 became Answers in Genesis (AiG), a creation ministry dedicated to "upholding the authority of the Bible from the very first verse."

In 2008 Ham was described by well known atheist and evolutionary biologist PZ Myers as a "Wackaloon" for carrying out a prayer session with members of the Pentagon. Ham responded regarding the validity of that prayer breakfastand that PZ Myers and other critics were intolerant of his position.

A quick and easy resource to read.

✏️ Review ✏️

While this second volume wasn't as instructive as the first volume in this series, I still appreciated and benefited from many of the topics covered. However, some of the "contradictions" were way too simple for that label (for instance, "Can a Thief Go to Heaven?"). While I'm sure the authors had good intent, these topics make it appear that every hard-to-grasp concept in the Bible needs to be defended on a contradiction status, which can create a host of problems. And there can be a point of over complicating such matters by doing this. I'm not saying don't read this book — only pointing out what I observed while reading it. I would recommend this resource to most people; but the first volume in this series would be a more a beneficial read.

📊 A Quick Overview 📊

👍🏼 What I Liked:
•The quick explanations of each "contradiction."
•The organization of this book into mini-chapters and headings.

👎🏼 What I Did Not Like:
•A few of the concepts covered (see main review).

Completed reading both volumes of Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions books (which contain a total of 80 explanations!) and absolutely agree with the conclusion of this book:

“May we always have complete confidence in God and His Word and rely on Him for all things. ‘It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man’ (Psalm 118:8).”

I am adjusting my star rating due to a recent experience of someone asking questions to prove certain things in the Bible. First off, I don't need to prove anything. But because there seemed to be an urgency in the questioning, I thought I'll sow the seeds, even though she said she was once involved in a religion and now claims to be an atheist.
The responses to my answers were as ridiculous as the ones in these books. I had thought surely those questions cannot be real, as ridiculous as they are. Now that I have experienced the ridiculous responses ignoring history, archaeology, and science, I have given both volumes three stars.

Better than volume 1, but still not great.

Since the fall of man Satan has been attacking God’s word and planting doubt about its truthfulness (Gen. 3). Israel faced attacks on God’s word to them, Jesus faced attacks by his opponents concerning his words about himself (especially from the religious leaders) and since the first century to the present, Christians have faced attacks on what God has revealed to us in Scripture.

While there are many angels the attacks have come from, one of the most common is the assertion that within Scripture itself there are numerous contradictions in every book of the Bible. The accusation is that while Scripture may affirm one thing to be true in one place, it affirms something contradictory in another place. Thus, skeptics see these as clear contradictions and therefore question the trustworthiness of God and his word.

In seeking to respond to these accusations, Ken Ham, Bodie Hodge, Tim Chaffey and others have produced Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions, Vol. 2. This work follows what Ken Ham did in Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions, Vol. 1 but has utilized the help of others in answering the questions. While the word “demolishing” in the title may seem to go over board in both approach and actual delivery, the aim of the book is to provide clear, biblical and thoughtful answers to the 40 supposed Bible contradictions addressed in the book.

In the introduction, Bodie Hodge and David Wright contend that Christians do not need to be constantly on the defensive when it comes to answering the accusations of those who believe Scripture is fraught with contradictions. Rather, the Christian should turn the tables on the skeptic and, in light of the internal and external biblical evidence, ask them to defend their position that the text of Scripture has contradictions. Thus, as the intro title states, a good defense of a good offense. Also, it is good and right for the believer to ask questions of the skeptic in regards to their own religious and worldview beliefs.

Most of the questions in the book are answered within 2-4 pages. The supposed contradiction/problem is stated, the answer/solution is given and the chapter is concluded. The answers are clear and the text of Scripture is given the highest respect in regards to its inerrancy. Most of the answers are helpful though some may not be fully convinced of the particular answers given and may want to study further for more satisfactory answers.

Some of the supposed contradictions would not only be asked by biblical skeptics. In other words, if every Christian is honest about their reading of Scripture, they have and will come across passages of Scripture that seem to contradict each other. This does not mean the Christian believes there actually is a contradiction. Rather, because God inspired over 40 human authors across 1,500 years, each writer, in their time in history or context, may be looking at the same event from a different angle. Every honest reader of the text will struggle with reconciling certain passages with others. At the end of the day, though we may struggle to interpret certain passages of Scripture, we trust in the character of God that he has truthfully inspired the authors of Scripture in what they have written. God’s word can be trusted, its content can be harmonized and its message is unified.

Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions, Vol. 2 will serve as an introduction and quick reference guide for sorting out supposed Bible contradictions. This book would serve school age children well as an easy to understand guide that is not technical or academic as well as new believers. Laymen will also find this book helpful in their own study and in answering the challenges of unbelievers to the text of Scripture.

NOTE: I received this book for free from Master Books in return for a review and was under no obligation to provide a favorable review.

Search for the words “Bible contradiction” on google and you will get search results that exceed six million hits. Perform that same search on Amazon.com and you will find more than two thousand books on the subject. We clearly are living at a time in history where questioning the authority and historicity of the Bible is all the rage.

What does this mean for the Christian? At a basic level, it means you will likely encounter people who do not share your view about the truthfulness and reliability of God’s word (i.e. the Bible). 1 Peter 3 suggests that the Christian needs to be ready to offer a defense for the hope that is within them, doing it with gentleness and respect. In order to offer a proper defense, every Christian should become somewhat familiar with the the study of apologetics. When people hear the word apologetics for the first time, they will often ask what exactly it is they will be apologizing for. Don’t worry, apologetics has nothing to do with saying you’re sorry. It is actually the branch of theology concerned with offering a defense or proof for Christianity.

The team at Answers in Genesis is extremely passionate about equipping Christians with apologetics resources that will aid them in defending their faith. One of their latest resources is Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions: Volume 2, which is a follow up book to Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions: Volume 1 (Master Books, 2010). This new volume examines forty alleged Bible contradictions, twenty from the Old Testament and twenty from the New Testament.

If you’re the type of reader who tends to skip over introductory material, I strongly encourage you to take the time to read through Bodie Hodge and David Wright’s introduction. It will help you to better understand some of the types of conversations you may find yourself in with skeptics. Their goal is to help you move away from always “playing” defense in these exchanges. With the right tools and training, you’ll be ready for offense in no time.

The layout of each chapter is very straight-forward. First is the explanation of the “problem” and the relevant Bible verses. Next is the solution, which offers commentary on both sides of the issue, but ultimately gives an explanation that strives to show that the Bible is not contradictory. Each chapter comes to a close with a final section called conclusion, recapping what you learned in the problem and solutions sections in a few sentences. Some of the chapters cover a lot of ground in only a few pages, so the conclusion section does a nice job of bringing it all together, helping you to connect all the dots to ensure you have a good understanding of what you just read.

This book has something to offer Christians of all ages (teen to adult). Some of the articles do dive a bit deep, but the writing will be accessible and understandable to the average man in the pew. If you have more of an academic bent, you will find many good things here too. It’s well-reasoned articles will challenge you to think critically about your Bible and the attacks that are lodged against it. My hope is that this book will whet readers’ appetites to delve even further into the study of apologetics. Should you want to go further, you will definitely want to consider the many great apologetics titles published by Master Books.

THE SECOND VOLUME OF THIS SERIES

Editor Ken Ham is a prominent “Young Earth Creationist,” and the president/CEO and founder of Answers in Genesis, and the Creation Museum.

This 2011 book has contributions from a variety of authors, and is arranged in order of the Biblical books. The companion volume to this book is 'Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions Volume 1.'

The Introduction states, “We often hear skeptics attack Christians with pointed questions in an attempt to poke holes in the Christian worldview… notice the tactic---attack and make the Christian defend his viewpoint until the battle is over… But in the battle over these humanistic religions and the Bible, should Christians simply be on the defensive?... the Christian needs to take the offensive in the debate, rather than always staying on the defensive… In fact, we are called to demolish arguments, but… we need to do this with gentleness, respect, and graciousness… The atheists, agnostics, humanists, and so on are not the enemy… The false ideas of atheism, agnosticism, and humanism are enemies of the truth… Sadly, many unbelievers do not realize they are merely being used as pawns in a chess match… Notice this is not attacking the person but his or her philosophy.”

They continue, “Pointing out supposed contradictions in the Bible is really nothing more than a smoke screen to keep people distracted from the real issue---the numerous contradictions in the humanistic worldview… As we have said … the Bible cannot and does not contain any legitimate contradictions and inconsistencies. It is infallible in its original autographs… This truth is absolute, and it allows us to make sense of logic, morals, ethics, the human condition (sin), death, suffering, science, and everything else in the world around us. If the Bible is not true, then logic and morals would have no basis.”

About whether plants were created on day 3 or 6, the writer observes, “There is a rather simple solution to this alleged contradiction. On the third day of the creation week, God made certain types of plants… Beginning with the fourth verse of Genesis 2, the writer zooms in on the events of the sixth day. God made Adam (v. 7), the Garden of Eden along with the plants therein) specifically mentioned are the fruit trees, v. 8-9)… What about the plants described in verse 5? Why weren’t those created on day 3 when God made the other plants? The context provides the answer… Two specific types of plants are translated from specific Hebrew terms: ‘plant of the field’… and ‘herb of the field’… The cultivated ‘herbs of the field’ were not around because Adam had not been created yet, so there was no one to till or cultivate the ground. The ‘wild shrubs of the steppe’ are plants that often have thorns, and those thorns would not have been present until after the Curse.” (Pg. 20)

About 1 Sam 2:8 [‘the pillars of the earth’] and Job 26:7 [‘hangs the earth upon nothing’], the comments are made, “how can the earth rest on pillars and at the same time hang on nothing? But remember that a true contradiction would be more like ‘hangs on nothing’ versus ‘hangs on something’… In addition, the idea of the earth having ‘pillars’ and ‘foundations’ seems to defy observations of our planet from afar… The supposed contradiction quickly disappears when we examine the context of each passage and recognize it as figurative language… We know that the earth does not literally have foundations and a cornerstone like a building; instead, God uses this figurative language to create a mental picture for Job… This is something we are all familiar with in everyday speech… Critics of our ministry often ridicule Answers in Genesis because we endorse the historical-grammatical hermeneutic. They claim that we must take everything in the Bible in a wooden literal sense. However, the historical-grammatical hermeneutic recognizes figures of speech are used in everyday language, and we should interpret them as such.” (Pg. 63-64)

About the timing of the withering of the fig tree [Mt 21:19/Mk 11:20-21], the writer observes, [Mk 11:20-24] recounts how Peter remembered and said to Jesus that the fig tree had withered to its roots. Matthew accounts for when the tree actually withered (being withered in appearance from a loss of moisture), and the passage in Mark’s Gospel states that Peter took not that the tree had withered all the way to the roots (meaning that the tree had at this point completely shriveled)… The other possible solutions are largely based on the variant meanings of two key terms… if this view is right, then Matthew simply wrote about this particular event from a topical approach rather than chronological, while Mark did the opposite. Another possible solution is based on the notion that ‘immediately’ in Matthew 21:19 is a relative timing word… it can be used… in certain contexts that would normally require a long period of time.” (Pg. 105-107)

Of the resurrection appearances of Jesus, the commentator suggests, “these accounts are not contradictory but are actually complementary… Scripture records two post-Resurrection appearances in Galilee… There is no indication of how much time had elapsed between the initial appearances in the Jerusalem area, but at a minimum, there had to have been eight days plus travel time… Who was present at this meeting on the mountain in Galilee? The 11 were certainly there, but nothing in theses verses suggests that they were the only ones. This appearance was very likely the event recorded in 1 Corinthians 15:6 when Christ appeared to more than five hundred brethren at once… hundreds of followers could have received word of the promised appearance and arrived at the pre-arranged place on a mountain there in Galilee… The verses tell us that the people worshiped Him, but some were doubtful… Despite their poor earlier performance, it is unlikely that any of the 111 were still in doubt, but it would not be at all surprising to initially find some lingering doubts in the five hundred… The accounts in Mark, Luke, and John deal with events in Jerusalem on Resurrection Sunday and then eight days later.” (Pg. 117-118)

Bodie Hodge compares/contrasts Covenant Theology with Dispensational Theology, and notes, “Both of these schools of thought answer why Christians do not adhere to all the Mosaic laws. There are Christians whose theologies do not fit into either of these camps… Answers in Genesis does not take a position on this theological debate… From here, we let your denomination go further.” (Pg. 163-165)

This book will be of keen interest to those (particularly with a YEC perspective) studying biblical apologetics.

Have you every been confused about how two different passages referring to the same things can possibly fit together, or even wondered if the Bible got it wrong? If so, or even if you haven't, this book is for you.

The multiple authors of this book answer answer forty questions clearing up some Biblical question marks, using the Bible, science, and literal root translation. The questions ranged from simple misunderstandings to tough and scientific questions, such as, "Do rabbits really 'chew the cud'?" The book dealt with both Old Testament and New Testament scriptures in an understandable comprehensive manner, that added both humor and logic. I thought I knew most of the stuff that would be covered in this book, but I was happily suprised to learn many new things.

Our family used it as part of our family devotions, and it was a great addition! I highly recommend using it this way because the chapters are short and won't go over the heads of children 11 & up.

Overall and wonderful read that is made into many short chapters so that it is easy to pick up and put down whenever you have a moment to spare, and that moment will definitely be worth your time!

I highly recommend that you pick up this wonderful read that can also be a powerful tool.

I received this book from the publisher in return for an honest review. Thanks!

"Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions, Volume 2" is a collection of answers written by various people explaining why various alleged contradictions in the Bible aren't actual contradictions. The book explained what, exactly, a contradiction is and why these alleged contradictions aren't true contradictions (like the word is used in a difference sense in different places or the dilemma wasn't an either/or but both are possible). They explained the answer or several possible answers to the specific alleged contradictions. The arguments were easy to follow and well-written. I'd highly recommend this book, especially to anyone who has been asked about (or wondered about) apparent contradictions in the Bible and didn't know the answer.

I actually read this on line at answersingenesis.com (no edition correlates to this). Ken Ham, as always, does a great job of unraveling the relevant arguments and presuppositions and accurately expositing God's word with sound hermeneutics. (I'm writing the same review for both volumes.)

A lot of these contradictions are of such a level of triviality that anyone bringing them up as a reason why they are not believing in the Bible are either 1) completely ignorant or 2) not objecting in good faith

Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions, Volume 2 by Tim Chaffey, Ken Ham and Bodie Hodge is the second installment from the Answers in Genesis team dealing with supposed contradictions in the Bible. Forty supposed biblical contradictions are dealt with in this volume.

Many times, Christians are stopped cold in their attempts to share the biblical message when someone accuses the Bible of containing contradictions. The Christian must be prepared to defend the Word of God against such attacks. This book is a helpful addition in this regard.

Being able to confront these so-called contradictions is a necessary preparation for the believer for two important reasons:

First, the believer who is prepared to give good answers to supposed Bible contradictions will be much more successful in breaking down the barriers that inhibit unbelievers coming to saving faith. We know that it is the Holy Spirit who convicts the heart, but it is our duty to be prepared to be used by God to aid in that conviction. We are to be ready with a defense for why we believe what we believe (I Peter 3:15).

Second, knowing that good answers exist for any question a skeptic might bring up gives the Christian more confidence in his faith and in his God. The Bible is the Word of God and it is Truth. There are no mistakes in truth. If there appears to be a contradiction in the Bible, it is due to our not fully understanding all the issues involved. Through prayer, Bible study, and helpful resources such as this book, seeming contradictions will disappear.

This volume, and its companion Volume 1, helps to prepare the believer to face the skeptic’s questions. It helps acquaint the Christian with some issues that might come up in witnessing situations. Many skeptics cling to their autonomy voraciously. Many will attack the Bible, and the Christian’s faith, violently. The believer must be ready for that attack.

This book helps the believer prepare a defense for some of the arguments that skeptics are liable to sling his or her way. This builds the believer’s faith and stops the skeptic’s argument at the same time. It makes the Christian a better prepared representative of Jesus Christ.

Christians will not be able to convince everyone we speak to of the veracity of the Word of God. However, with books like these to help us prepare our arguments, and the Holy Spirit’s power working in our hearts and the skeptic’s heart, we will be much more effective for the Kingdom of God.

Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions, Volume 2, and all of the books from Master Book publishers, is a helpful addition to any Christian’s library.

Skeptics. You got to love'em. You try and proclaim the kingdom of God to them, and what do they do? They begin pitching details and trivia, doing all they can to discredit the Bible and our faith in God. You present the reality of a Heavenly Creator and our hope of living eternally with him, and they counter with, "The Bible is full of contradictions. Did the rooster crow once our twice when Peter denied Jesus? "

Talk about straining a gnat and swallowing a camel!

But their questioning isn't a bad thing is it? Is our Bible the infallible guide we claim it to be? Should we be scared of their accusations?

Thankfully the Word of God has withstood every assault and proven itself reliable time and again. When we think we may have encountered a mistake, it is only we who are mistaken. With a little research and prayer many of these supposed contradictions can be resolved in short order. To help us in this endeavor, we have valuable resources such as Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions Volume 2, to set the record straight.

This book lays out forty alleged contradictions that atheist and skeptics often use in an attempt to cause us to doubt the Bible's veracity. I found most of these to be so easily explained that I thought it amazing that some people read the bible with such bias against it that they are unable to see even the simplest of truths. It's as if they have no ears to hear!

So why do we need these types of books? Because unfortunately not all of these supposed contradictions are so easily answered. That's where the knowledge and research of godly scholars comes in. Tim Chaffey, Ken Ham, and Bodie Hodge put in the leg work, so that we can be prepared to give an honest defense of the faith. Knowledge such as cultural context, Greek verb tenses, or Middle Eastern geology, can often shed light on what seems dark to modern believers. Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions Volume 2 is the culmination of intense study that most of us simply do not have the time to dedicate ourselves to.

I read through this the first time realizing that this book would be most useful as a handy quick reference tool when helping others, or ourselves, when facing difficulties in God's Word. If you're one who frequently finds themselves in the midst of these types of conversations, or just want to explore these issues in more depth, then this just might be the book for you. Everything is written clearly and concisely so that no matter where you may happen to be in your walk, you should find the information accessible.

I'd like to thank Master Books for sending me this free copy for review as part of their Bible Defenders Review Team.

As a Christian I have often heard non-Christian, and even uneducated, luke-warm Christans, mention contradictions in God’s Word. I haven’t given it much thought, instead choosing to have the faith as a child and just know that God didn’t make any mistakes, that it must be through the interpretation that there was error.
That is exactly what this book is intended for, working out those interpretations and bringing them into the light through additional passage references, looking at the times during when they were written, and taking into account translation from the original Word.
40 supposed contradictions from Genesis through Revelation. Each one given a problem statement, or verses that allegedly contradict one another. Then offers a solution for the reader to demolish this contradiction, and then a conclusion for the reader to take the knowledge and utilize it when confronted.
Many of these I have seen scattered around the Creation Museum on signs as you walk through the Bible. I remember reading them then and thinking they were a great treasure to remember. Being of little memory, I of course didn’t retain them from that and was so glad to see them written in this second volume of Demolishing Strongholds.
This is a book to read through, and get an understanding of the scriptures that those questioning the faith may present to you as contradicting. It is an excellent reference to hang on to when those times present themselves and you may or may not as in my limited memory be able to give a solid reason why. I can always say, hold on.. I have a book on that!!
From a homeschool Mom standpoint I think this would be a wonderful book for the teens to read and reference as well. They will come up against many of these once the leave the nest and need to take their biblical worldview out into the world. Perfect guide for young graduates to take with them as well. I am thankful for the editors and researchers who commit time to bringing these contradictions under scrutiny and glorifying God.

For years those of us in the Christian community have endured the skeptics of Christianity as they have tried to make everyone (including us) think that only uneducated people believe the Bible. Well, no more! Once again we have a resource from Answers in Genesis that shows the average lay person how to defend his faith in a very competent way.

This book has detailed answers to forty supposed contradictions in the Bible in a very clear and concise manner. It also has a really good introduction that explains why it is better to have a good offense than to just always be on the defensive. With tips on how to turn the tables on the skeptics without being rude, this book could very well change the way Christians see their role in the secular world.

I like a lot about this book. It is short (169 pages) but packed with information. Each “contradiction” is dealt with using the same format:

First, the “problem” is plainly stated and includes the Bible passages that pertain to it.

Second, there is the solution to the question explained in a logical way with scripture references and other sources to back it up.

Finally, there is a short conclusion that ties it all together.

Make no apologies or excuses for the Word of God.
Stand up for what you believe.
Defend your faith.
This book is a must have for the Christian home library.
You will not want to be without it.

Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions (Vol. 2) is another excellent book written by the combined authorship of Ken Ham, Bodie Hodge, and Tim Chaffey. Designed to give Christians a Biblical basis to stand strong on God's Word, this book does away with the "smoke screens" that unbelievers will throw in your path.

This book has 40 chapters, one for each (you guessed it) supposed Bible contradiction. It's interesting to follow through Biblical chronological history, the original language the texts were written in, and other fact-revealing methods of determining what some have considered contradictory scripture passages.

Even several supposed inconsistencies I had heard of before (that seemed so obvious as non-contradictory) are laid out in reader-friendly terms. It's nice to have easy-to-relate answers to those who have questions.

The Bible doesn't contradict itself in any way. As the book states, it is written to show you that the Bible is completely trustworthy. If we have a difficult time understanding or accepting something, it doesn't mean it is false. We need to look into the issue on a deeper level. I believe that God has preserved His Word through the ages and the original manuscripts were inspired by God. Reading this book has encouraged me to dig deeper into passages before glossing over information that appears more tedious or difficult to understand.

I have yet to read Volume 1 of Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions; it is now on my to-read list. I received this book in exchange for my honest review from New Leaf Publishing Group.

Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions Volume 2 teaches that we, as Christians, need to be able to stop being on the defensive and start being on the offensive when it comes to Biblical truths. It also reminds us that we need to make sure that all we say and do needs to be done in a manner which will be pleasing to the Lord. It gives us tools to help us dig deeper and start to answer some of the questions that are routinely thrown out at Christians.

The book is broken down into 5 main sections:

Genesis
Exodus – Deuteronomy
Joshua – Malachi
Matthew – John
Acts – Revelation
Within these sections, several different questions about supposed scriptural contradictions are answered by different authors. I like that they brought in different authors to help answer the questions as the different styles of writing and answering is a nice change of pace. The conversational style of the book makes it less intimidating and easy to read and comprehend.

The book can be read straight through as a way to prepare for questions that we receive, or it can be used as a resource for when we’re hit with some of the seemingly tough questions. As always, we are strongly encouraged to really get into the Word of God for the answers. The book is only a resource as the truth is found in His Word.

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book to help facilitate the writing of a frank and honest review.

"Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions: Volume 2" is edited by Ken Ham, Bodie Hodge and Tim Chaffey and written by a group of biblical creationists. There are two volumes in this series. Herein, supposed Bible contradictions are challenged and found wanting. This book does the same thing as the first volume and it does a really good job of it.
I have nothing more to say.
