In a world of cars and shopping malls, Bridin sells New Age trinkets--and waits for the man who can help her return home to an enchanted kingdom called Rush. She meets a rugged stranger, who is actually Tristan, the usurper who stole her kingdom. Tristan, deposed by his brother, has escaped into the mortal realm determined to win and wed Bridin--for only the magic of their passion can save their enchanted homeland.
I live in the teeny, tiny town of Taylor, NY, (Alliteration Alert!) though my mailing address is Cincinnatus, my telephone exchange is Truxton and I pay taxes and vote in Cuyler. All of these are at least in the same rural county in the southern hills of New York State; Cortland County. There are more cattle than people here. The nearest “big” cities are Syracuse and Binghamton and they are an hour away, in different directions, and not really all that big by most standards, though they both seem humongous to me. I look out my window to see rolling, green, thickly forested hills, wildflower laden meadows and wide open blue, blue skies. My road is barely paved. The nearest neighboring place is a 700 acre dairy farm.
My house is a big, century old farmhouse. I moved in here after my divorce in 2006. Just a little over a year later, the house, which I had named, SERENITY, burned. It was 99% gutted, and I lost my two dogs, Sally, an 11-year-old great Dane, and Wrinkles, my 14-year-old, blind bulldog. This was the culmination of my Dark Night of the soul, which had seemed to hit me all at once in 2006-2007. My mother died that year, after a 14 month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was only 60. The youngest of my five daughters had left home that same year, and while that’s not a tragedy at all, it felt like one to me. Then came the divorce. And finally there was the fire--it seemed my darkest night wasn’t quite finished with me after all. I had lost almost everything before that point, and as I poked through the wet ashes and soot the next day, I realized that I had now been stripped all the way to the bone.
No better time to start over. (And no, I didn’t come to that realization that day--there were a few days of wallowing in pity first, particularly the day after the fire, when I hit a deer and smashed up my car, which I was practically living in!)
That’s when I started to laugh. Just sat on the side of the road as the deer bounded, uninjured and carefree, out of sight, and laughed. It was just too ridiculous at that point, to do anything else!
And from there, I picked myself up, and brushed myself off, and said, okay, there’s only one way to go from here. Forward. And that’s what I did. There I was at the age of harrurmphemmph, living in my one, mostly undamaged remaining room, with a dorm-sized mini-fridge, a futon, a TV, my cat (nine lives!) and a laptop. And not much else. (Though thank goodness the room that survived the fire, was a room that had its own attached bathroom!)
Since then I have rebuilt my beloved home, which really has become my haven, my “Serenity.” I share it now with my fiancé, Lance, and we have accumulated quite the little family together. “Little” being a relative term. We have a pair of English Mastiffs, Dozer and Daisy, who weigh 203 pounds and 208 pounds respectively, and a little pudgy English Bulldog named Niblet, who is bigger than both of them, inside her mind. We also have the aforementioned cat, Glorificus (“Glory” for short,) who adores her canine pups and keeps them firmly in line. And we've acquired a pair of stray cats as well, a mother and son, Luna (Lulu for short) and Butters aka Buddy. Lulu showed up pregnant during a lunar eclipse, had a litter, and vanished again. We found homes for all the kittens except one. Butters. We got him fixed and kept him. A few months later, Lulu returned, again expecting. This litter was born on the "Monster Moon." Again, all the kittens were spayed and neutered and placed in homes, and this time we got Lulu to the vet in time to spay her before the cycle could repeat.
Glory is not amused.
She has a story of her own, my old Glory cat, having been with me before the Dark Times descended, she went through it all with me, moved with me, survived the fire, and remains with me still. She's tolerating the newcomers. Barely.

2 stars — First things first, I got lazy and didn’t contact Amazon to force whatever update to whatever latest version I could get (now entitled By Magic Enchanted). So this cover above, this is the version I read, and I truly think it’s a pretty early one. Honestly, I don’t think the blurb on Goodreads that’s associated with this cover is accurate either, and thus I was sooooo confused when I started this book and Bridin was in Rush, and then a bunch happens there before they ever come back to the human side. So I kinda think I won’t post this review anywhere but my blog and Goodreads, b/c I have NO IDEA how much changed between versions…this is really just for my own thought vomit.
I was kind of underwhelmed by this book. It felt like something I might write, and since I’m not an aspiring author, that’s not a compliment. It was flat, shallow, cheesy at times. There were definitely continuity issues with book 1 (though again, I read a newer version of book 1, so that might be why). I didn’t like Bridin or Tristan for the first half. Their romance is everything I’m not a fan of in enemies to lovers. They were snippy and mean to one another, there wasn’t much that connected them. I don’t think I ever really understood what their connection was, and I definitely didn’t feel it. It’s almost like at a certain point it changed and they weren’t the same characters I had been reading. I don’t know. I also had a few days in between reading and might have gotten out of the zone.
When they finally go back, it was almost over the top how much they both wanted to sacrifice for one another. They both claimed to care about the kingdom, but it felt a bit shallow. Vincent was horrifically evil, in a creepy way.
The last “steamy” scene between the two of them made me feel kind of gross, and I don’t understand the point.
And then it just…I don’t know. I don’t know how to describe it other than the entire climax felt like an eye roll. *sigh*
The difference in writing between the two books has me believing that if I’d been less lazy and gotten a newer version of this book, it would have been better. How much better? I don’t know, but I’m betting at least one star better. So learn from me — make Amazon give you the latest version they can. Or get it from the library. Or, I don’t know, something. Needless to say I definitely won’t be reading more.
Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha, Michelle L. Olson:
I have been, and will always be, a huge Maggie Shayne fan. Her Wings in the Night series is very special to me, & played an integral part in overcoming things during a very difficult time of my life. As soon as I had read them all and checked out a few of her other series, I started to hunt down her Classics. Fairytale and Forever Enchanted sat on my Kindle for quite awhile and now I am kicking myself for not reading them sooner. Fairytale was an absolutely wonderful adult fairytale, but Forever Enchanted took my breath away.
Action packed from beginning to end, Forever Enchanted pulls you in from the very first page and never lets go. When you flip the last page you are left wanting for nothing, except maybe just a little bit more. :)
Bridin and Tristan are an incredible heroine and hero and prove that the old cliche can often times be the most accurate - There really is a fine line between love and hate.
Fated to be mortal enemies by the actions of their ancestors it was expected that they would forever battle for the throne of Rush (or as Tristan's people call it, Shara). In order to stop Bridin from taking the throne Tristan locked her away on the Other Side (the mortal realm) from the time she was a little girl. Just 10 years her senior though, while he had her locked away so that she couldn't steal the throne or kingdom from him, he couldn't find it within himself to ever harm her, and in fact, provided for her as best he could.
Growing up with an animosity toward The Dark Prince, Bridin battles the conflicting feelings within herself over Tristan. He's her jailer, the one who stole her childhood, her freedom, and her throne, but he's always been a draw for her as well. She chalked it up to Stockholm Syndrome and a childish crush, but after she returns to Rush to try and reclaim the throne she realizes that it just might be much more than that.
When a series of events in Shara force both of them back to the Other Side and back into one another's lives in a capacity other than adversaries for the throne, the passion between them ignites and though they fight it at every turn, it soon becomes apparent that there's no way they can deny it.
Set in a complicated and beautiful world surrounded by captivating characters, Forever Enchanted was an emotionally charged and action packed thrill ride full of wonderful surprises.
I adored this book, and I would recommend it to EVERYONE.
LITERAL ADDICTION gives Forever Enchanted an easily earned 5 Skulls. This will definitely go on my re-read shelf. :)
Whenever I saw Ms. Shayne's name on a book, it became an auto-buy. She is one of my first group of paranormal romance authors I adored. years have passed and I still enjoy her books. Over a decade ago, I found one of her really early works. I cannot tell you how hard it was to find this book pre-kindle adoption. My spouse searched all over eBay to find this book. He finally found a copy to be sold... in all places - Merry Ole England. He bought it for my birthday and I loved it.

2.5 🌟 Fey Princess Bridin's kingdom was seized by the father of dark wizard Tristan twenty years ago.
Tristan and Bridin have spent years in a love-hate relationship, referring to the other as their Dearest Enemy. But now they must join forces in a shaky truce to overthrow Tristan's evil brother Vincent after he violently usurps Tristan's reign.
This whole book is spent with the MCs to-ing and fro-ing over their feelings. They don't trust each other but are physically attracted to one another. They think their ultimate goals are opposed, as both believe that only they are the rightful ruler of the land, but also knowing that marrying each other is a sure way to secure peace.
This book was irritating because the MCs couldn't accept their feelings, then when they finally did, they seemed to be trying to outdo each other in the martyrdom stakes.
This book contains descriptive love scenes, including an awkward and slightly ick scene in a dungeon.
After reading book one, I had to know what would happen with Bridin and Tristan. I honestly didn't expect to enjoy the story as much as I did. As a 40 year old woman, I am only just now enjoying fairy tale type stories and this one did not disappoint. I liked the chemistry between the two and the magic world of Rush was interesting - I enjoy different authors visions on what a magical world would look like. Overall - good story, quick read, and enjoyable.
It's not often you can say you love a sequel better than the first, but with this book, I definitely did! The dynamic between Tristan and Bridin was outstanding and so alluring! I felt more connected to these characters as their emotions and responses to each other and other circumstances were deeply moving, most likely due to their emotional intensity. A lot of that emotional intensity is set up from the first book in the series, which is great, because it sucks you right in. I struggled with setting the book down...I had to finish it all in one day! I was disappointed when later in the book there was an inconsistency about her past from the first book. It diminished the read a bit. I loved the book so much that I'm still going to give it a five even with the inconsistency.
This book leaves off shortly after Fairytale ended. After escaping her captivity and returning to Rush in order to reclaim her family's throne, Bridin finds Tristan, her captor ruling as prince. She is committed to overthrowing his family and exiling them once again. Tristan is determined to keep the throne his father had reclaimed for his long-exiled family. Bridin and Tristan soon discover an inner conflict as Tristan and Bridin seem to have an emotionally charged connection, wishing neither harmed, and both adamantly deny it. When word of a raid is heard, Tristan orders Bridin's life spared, but his brother Vincent chooses to fulfill his long-awaited plans to usurp Tristan and take the thrown. He captures Bridin and attempts to strike her down with a sword, but Tristan leaps in and takes the death blow meant for Bridin. His last words to her are to run.
Shaken, Bridin escapes Vincent, but learns Tristan has died for her. Crushed and conflicted that she had feelings for the "monster" that held her captive her whole life and killed her adopted family, she is forced to face a worse enemy than Tristan, her cherished nemesis. Using deceitful means, Vincent has managed to convince Tristan and Bridin's people they were betrayed by their leaders. Bridin is physically forced by her loyal followers to retreat to the mortal world where a wood nymph prophesies her only hope is to seek a male to marry and only then can they return together. Until then she cannot reenter Rush and is magically prohibited to do so.
Tristan, saved only from his mortal wound by Bridin's necklace which Vincent cut from her neck, is also forced to retreat to the mortal world. He learns of Bridin's prophecy and plans to convince Bridin he is her destined mate, but with an illusioned appearance. Only then can he reclaim his throne and save his people from a tyrannical leader. Without his appearance, will the connection between them finally be free to run its course? Or will her soul recognize Tristan's? How would she ever be able to love the one who killed her adoptive family and imprisoned her, stealing her childhood and adolescence? Or is it possible Tristan saved her from something worse? Would she be able to set her feelings aside in order to save her people as Rush is being destroyed and her people are savagely mistreated?
Frankly this book is an intresting read. You will actually fall in love with Tristan and Bridin, the lead characters.
So here is how the story begins. Once upon a time there was this land known as Rush.It had a princess named Bridin, but her land got captured by the Shara. They ruled over her land for over more than 10yrs,and now the commander of the the land is prince Tristan. The rule of the land states that to become the king or the queen you need to be married.
Bridin and Tristan are most passionate enemies to each other.Tristan can't harm Bridin more than she can harm him. Until Tristan loses his life for Bridin she didn't come to know that he loved her, infact she too loved him.
The charcters are very much convincing in their role.Bridin is in love with Tristan but that doesn't keep her from contesting against him for her rule. She loves him passionately .Her character has the strength to fight,to survive,to love unconditionally.
Tristan, the prince could lay his life for Brindin but doesn't know why.He thinks its due to the promise he gave to his friend. He loves Bridin to his core, to his soul.
Now the twist is will the crown hold the power over love???
If you have ever read fairytale stories you know the end.
But this is a good one time read. You will certainly enjoy the story as well as the magic in it.
I actually liked this book better than the first one. I thought that both Bridin and Tristan stayed true to their established characters from book one and I was actually quite surprised at how much I enjoyed their story - and how much I wanted to read to the end.
I don't want to say too much about the book and spoil it, but I will say this - don't try to read this book first. I think you need to know the characters from book one so that this book will make sense. It made me like Tristan and I never thought that would happen.
I'm hoping there will be more books set in this world, but I have the feeling we've now seen the last of the fairy twins.
Okay, so this is one of my few forays into this genre, and I have to say, I wasn't feeling it so much. Perhaps it's because I missed the previous book, but I really wasn't feeling the connection between these two. So much of this book talks about how they feel about each other, but I never really felt it hit me, you know?
Also, I found the trip into the "mortal realm" to be a bit bizzarre, and sort of out of place. I'm trying to understand the appeal of these kinds of novels, but I don't feel like this one really explained it to me very well.
Going into this book, I didn't want to like it. I was invested in the characters from book one, and wanted to know more about them. But, I was pleasantly surprised. In bridin's story it's more magic, and of course more love, but you get to be in the fairy kingdom, instead of the mortal one. The love story is sweet, and you know it can't end any other way than happily ever after. I thouroughly enjoyed this book.
I love the "bad boy is actually good" books, and I've suspected this will be the case after finishing the first book in the series. And this book is so much better! I couldn't put it down, and after I finished the book I was left with the happiest feeling ever. Needless to say, I love the books that make me smile after I finish them and this one did.
It was a refreshing read!!!! Absolutely worth the time to read it! When I started the book I couldn't put it down! Literally! Bridin and Tristan's love was so romantic. Typical enemies falling in love. Then Marie pops out of no where in the climax of the story! Great surprise there! The ending I thought was very touching and all in all I say give this book a try; it's worth your time. :)
Guess I got my wish to find out what happens to Bridin and Trystin. This was a really good with lots of action some magic from and enchanted castle and battles to be had. While their is a love story in here the battle continues for the throne, however, they both learn what is of greater importance. I thought this book would be more for tweens, however it is really a good adult fairy tale.
Forever Enchanted is kinda set up in Fairytale, if you didn't read the first one your kind of lost, not normal in Maggie Shayne's books.
GREAT book Maggie Shayne amazed me AGAIN, I have only went into a couple of her books expecting not to like them. But always amazed by the end tht I was narrow minded enough to think tht I wouldn't like anything she writes.
I just finished this and I must say this was better than Fairytale. That's not to say Fairytale wasn't good because I loved it too! I wasn't sure how I felt about Bridin going into this story, but I totally fell in love with her! She is such a strong character. Tristan wasn't what I was expecting at all....he was SO much better. Loved this book and can't wait for more from Maggie Shayne!!
This is the sequel to "Fairytale" that is about fairies. This book was great! Much better than the first one! They are about twin sisters and what they do to try to avoid, or rule, their Fairy Kingdom, and the men they fall in love with as they are trying to accomplish one or the other.
I liked this much better than the first book in the series. In fact I read this first. Tristan & Bridin are both strong characters, just in different ways. The ending could have been better. All in all, an enjoyable read.
I've really enjoyed these books. Mostly the struggle to keep the romance going and all the ups and downs has kept me interested. It's written well. I have enjoyed the fight scenes, which is always a plus.
I really liked this one... I hope that this author has more of this series in the offing. I did like it even more than the first in the series. I liked the male lead and the little twists... a nice weekend read.
This one wasnt as bad as the first book! There are still sex scenes but they aren't as many. I still skipped them cause I could tell they were semi detailed but this story was also very good. I like the characters and their personalities.
Just like the first book, Forever Enchanted is a great read that will leave you with a good mood and happy ending. I think this book had more action in it compared to the first, and the ending definitely makes you keep reading. I really enjoyed this :)
Love this book. A little too much graphic sex for ya but not too much for adults.Loved the characters but they seemed to pick up on the less important things easier than the more important ones. Plenty of stuff for a prequel.Iwant to know who Raze really is. Read it in one setting.
I enjoyed this 2-book series by Shayne. It certainly amused me that the 'mortal' side of the family resided in Ithaca on the banks of the Cayuga -- right where I summer. I liked that. Nothing beats a fairy tale. Good reads.
Not as good as the first one, but I liked the characters better. There was a contradiction in the story as to the heroine's background which was annoying, but if you ignore that it's a sweet story.
Excellent follow up to Fairytale. A little more fantasy but enjoyable. I was disappointed that the characters from both books didn't interact a little more.
