Nikki is a boring 17 year old girl who faints and cries every chance she gets. Nikki or Dikki as I like to call her somehow manages to get caught up in the war between heaven and hell. Naturally Dikki gets three hot protectors who DUN DUN DUN just so happen to be half human and aw yea half angel..I think I shall call them halfies, no half&half, no 50:50, no I've got it..I shall call them halflings...unoriginal you say? lame you say? uninspired you say? Well then you'd be 100% right.
Anywho 2 out of the 3 halflings fall in wuv Dikki because she's so speshul and bwave. Mace or Spice Angel as I like to call him is sweet, caring and an all round good guy. Raven or Dusky Angel if you please is wait for it.. a BAD BOY..SHOCK!HORROR!.. he's dangerous, arrogant and he's a player..don't hate the player, hate the game. Dikki can't help but be drawn to his badboybadishness..WHAT?! That'a real word! Spice Angel and Dusky Angel both want Dikki cos she's well..she's DIKKI isn't she?!
Dikki does karate and paints which makes her all deep and misunderstood, she doesn't care about boys, well boys who aren't the male protaganists anyway because otherwise according to YA romancelandia that would just make her appear shallow..of couse when Spice Angel and Dusky Angel come in to the picture she's torn and oh.. it's just so tragic..some readers may not be able to handle the level of non-emotion that Dikki's wuv life evokes.
She naturally has one friend who's superficial and boy crazy..thus in comparison giving the false impression that Dikki has substance.
Dikki gets in trouble a lot a la Bella Swan ...Spice Angel and Dusky Angel rescue her even though she and Spice/Dusky Angel claim she's strong and capable.
Dikki gets angry and mad when Spice Angel checks out some female haflings even though she's happily rubbing upto old Dusky Angel!! Oh Dikki, what are you like!
Dikki whines and cries and then some stuff happens which makes Dikki whine and cry more, then Dikki whines and cries some more. The End.
The sequel - questions that I hope are answered:
-Will Dikki ever stop whining and crying?
-Will she choose Spice or Dusky Angel?
-Will she become even more speshul?
-Will Dikki cope with all her hardships by painting and doing other profound things..therefore making her if possible even more irresistable to Spice and Dusky Angel??
Only time will tell and I for one await in bated breath for the sequel.

The main character in this story, Nikki, is supposedly a kick-ass girl who has a black belt in karate and rides a motorcycle. She is leading a "normal" until until suddenly, everywhere she turns, she is being attacked by evil creatures and she doesn't know why.

Luckily she has 3 half-human, half-angel protectors to watch over her. Mace, Raven, and Vine exist in a halfway between Earth and Heaven, and are outcasts in them both. Mace in particular feels inexplicably drawn to Nikki. But the 3 guardians are not supposed to get involved in the human's life.

That is all I know, because I only got 50 pages and four chapters into the story before I had to stop reading it. First of all, I didn't really buy Nikki as a realistic character. She is a 17 year old whose parents let her ride all around creation on a motorcycle, for cripes' sake? And she has a black belt in karate...she's also beautiful, but awkward around guys. SIGH. No, the beautiful-chick-who-is-awkward-around-guys motif has been overdone, and it's just so far from reality it's not even funny.

Second of all, I HATE HATE HATE instant LOVE in a novel. Mace came into contact with Nikki all of two times, during both she was unconscious...and he is all of a sudden in love with her. OOOK. Whatever.

Third, the language was way too sappy and cliche. Bad metaphors abound. For example, "His face was so very alive. Like moonbeams captured in flesh." Or, "I'm scared of myself. What I can do. What I can't do. Why I don't know who I am." Yeah. I just couldn't go on.

Don't even get me started on the guys' names. Mace, Raven, and Vine? Are they angelic protectors or pro wrestlers?

It's very rare I cannot finish a book, and I hate giving bad reviews, but I have to be honest. Halflings was not for me.

DISCLAIMER: This is an opinion of someone whose brain has been marinating in flu and colds medicine for at least a week. You might want to read somebody else's review...someone more coherent.

Halflings has all the recipe of what I can consider as a train wreck. Love triangle. Ick. A heroine with a predisposition to whining crying waffling. Double ick. A plot that seemed to veer off in several directions without a defined course. Triple...well, you know. Ick. It started out so good - action right off the bat. And the introduction of the three half-baked angels were nothing short of enticing. But with every turn of the page, the story becomes convoluted and confusing and...it was just all over the place. Arrrrggh! Nikki reminds me of well, me - in front of my closet deciding what to wear, picking one or two or three out, only to discard them in favor of my original choice. Hey, I'm a woman. I can change my mind. Sue me.

Nikki Youngblood is one of those heroines who had potential at first. She's artistic, unimpressionable, ballsy. But all that changed as soon as she meets Mace. Oy vey. The fainting spells killed me every. single. time. Mace is beautiful. Mace is attracted to the human. Mace is confused. Mace must decide what was more important - to avoid eternal damnation or to love the most oblivious, beautiful daughter of man he's ever seen. In short, they both annoyed me to hell. At the risk of sounding pessimistic, I couldn't find anything in this book worth the time I spent reading it. I can probably count the number of times I did an eyeroll (probably the same amount of time Nikki vacillated between Mace and Raven). Somehow, they arrived at the conclusion that they'll be better off as friends...but then the female halflings showed up and Nikki was all jealous of Mace's and Raven's reactions to the half-angel females. Ugh.

Nikki is a Seer - someone who can forecast danger. In Nikki's case, she can draw the exact picture. Kick ass, right? It would've been if the author explored Nikki's ability more. Why didn't she see the hellhounds who were after her at the beginning of the novel? Why didn't she see...those people who were going to get killed in an accident? Or why didn't she see what was going to happen to her dog, Bo? Tsk. So many plot holes...er, questions.

The love triangle irked me. I wasn't at all interested in who Nikki ends up with. Raven seemed like a cool character until he developed an attraction for Nikki. It just felt too contrived. It didn't make sense that he was disgusted with Nikki (by virtue of being human) at first and then he was singing her praises the next. All because HE got her art? This guy was so full of himself. And Nikki was way too fascinated with his angel wings...I don't know if that's euphemism for something.

I'm not firmly set against love triangles, per se. But the author have got to make sense of it. Nikki's abject reactions to Raven was just as confusing as Raven's reactions to her. All in all, the romance (s) in this book? (They) It didn't work at all. Mace and Nikki decided that they're right and wrong for each other. Shoot. Me. Now. Seriously? They're a match made in heaven, if you ask me. I wanted to shake them both and yell at them to stop their freaking annoying song and dance.

I'd love to go on and tell you one or two things that I liked about this book but sadly, I couldn't find any. All the things that irritated me were just too distracting to find the good in the sea of bad.

"Halflings" seemed to me like a half-hearted attempt at a paranormal/urban fantasy story for the YA audience. My words might be blunt in that, but it was difficult to find much to like and hold interest through much of the novel. I found that it often skipped from one event to the next without proper transition, the characters were quite underdeveloped, and many familiar paranormal tropes were forced without so much as any development in the worldbuilding for this fantastical realm, with some assertions that nearly threw me completely from the story as I read through it.

To give a brief summary, Nikki Youngblood is a special teenager who's being hunted by dark forces. When the novel commences, she's being chased by Hellhounds, which I thought was an interesting place to start from, though I wasn't sure why she was chased at first. She's saved by a half-human, half-angel (ergo, a "Halfling") named Mace, who cares for her though trying to keep his identity under wraps.

The start of the novel seemed a bit in haste for events, transitioning from Hellhounds to a speeding van that follows Nikki (and results in her fainting two or three times within the first several chapters), but I thought maybe that it would expound later on as to why these events occurred. At the same time, the group of Halflings (a.k.a the Lost Boys) aren't exactly happy with the meddling of human affairs with regards to Nikki. There's some mildly amusing banter between Mace and the Lost Boys, but it's hard to tell who they are at first from the position in the novel - I figure that's something that'll be developed later as the story moves forward. By this time, Mace, Raven and Vine are all protectors that have fought for Nikki in some way, and she suspects something's up, but she never comes out and says what it is.

Until she marches up into their stronghold and tells them they're angels, which was another awkward transition because there wasn't any smooth path leading up to that mention. The explanation of a Halfling and their history is the first point where I nearly put the book down, because while some of the angel terminology seemed consistent with other works, if you're going to have a major historical event/shift/change/mention in any story and try to give it conviction that the reader can care about and/or *learn* from, it's a good idea to develop it and expound so that it doesn't seem just thrown in arbitrarily.

That said, the mention of the Holocaust and Hitler with the Halfling mythos didn't make sense. It wasn't developed to anything that really added to the story.

It's later revealed that Nikki has a Seer ability - which means she can draw things that depict events in the future. This is a cool concept, but it's never shown more than once. And the conflict of a super scientific conspiracy that can only be stopped by the interference of the angels seemed a bit grandiose at best for a conflict.

In the mix of that conflict, there's an instalove triangle developed with Nikki pinning betwen Mace, the Halfling who seemed to be a decent "good guy", and Raven, the "bad boy" Halfling and more daredevil personality. The transition between these likes seemed off, and it was as if one moment Nikki's affections went toward one and then turned to the other in a heartbeat.

It was just too many issues and derivations for me to really see beyond them.

Overall score: 1/5

Note: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, from the publisher Zondervan.

I was excited to get this for review! The cover isn't as beautiful as the other debuts, but the story sure is good. I had to read it on my kindle app. Since I don't have a kindle and I hate reading on my laptop because it's so distracting...like seriously -___- So I finally found a way to read the books on my iPod. It took me about 2 and a half days? I stand up all night today, finishing it. It was so addicting, I could not put the book down. I love the plot and setting. This book is just great!

First Chapter: Nicole Youndblood, her nickname is Nikki was being chased by a pack of 'wolves'. She was running for her live. Raven, Mace, Vine, and Will are just looking at her in the distance trying to see when to come in to save her. These guys job is to protect Nikki, because that's their mission. The reason why they're protecting her is because she's special in some type of way. They don't understand why they have to protect her since she's human. They never did protect one before. Suddenly it was time to save her but Mace made a mistake by letting Nikki see his face.

Halflings: What are halflings? They are angels. Wait heavenly angels or fallen angels? None the above! They are in the middle...or actually they aren't. They are half angel and half human. They don't live with their parents, never got to meet them. Every Halflings group has 3 angels and has a guardian which is a heavenly angel. Halflings was made by Hitler causing the Holocaust to happen.

Love Triangle:
It's between Raven, Mace, and Nikki. I think Nikki is perfect with Raven but he is a player though. Mace is just ehhh. I think Raven can be a more of a boyfriend to Nikki.

I received this from NetGalley. I became enchanted from the start. Halflings is the telling of half-human half-angels, figures sent to protect Nicole Youngblood. Not sure of their journey, Mace, Raven and Vine aka The Lost Boys. They keep close tabs on Nikki. Even saving her life a few times. Towards the middle of the story their is a love triangle between Mace, Nikki and Raven. However it is forbidden for Halflings to fall in love. Rather not be the downfall for either boy. Nikki tries to control her feelings. Throughout the course of the story she questions whether or not she can help with their journey and if she's stronger for the epic ethereal battle.

I loved this story!! Couldn't even tell that this was a debut novel!! I look forward to the rest of the series and seeing where the storyline goes!

I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to read this book. I hope my review does it justice. Thank you Netgalley.com and Zondervan publishers for allowing me to review an ARC copy of Halflings by Heather Burch.

MY REVIEW:
Halflings is an amazing YA novel that absolutely had me parked in my kindle. It rocked my world!

Halflings had me enchanted from the beginning. It was so well written and fast paced that I just could not put it down. I had it read in one sitting. Burch's writing style is lovely. Her descriptive scenes that were painted for me had me frantically reading and hungry for more!

The main character Nikki isn't the usual damsel in distress she's more kick-butt and more of a heroine. Her protectors that have just arrived are Halflings or half fallen angel + half human. The Halflings Mace, Raven and Vine show up at the very beginning of the book when Nikki is fighting off hell hounds and they are sure to change her world forever.

Instantly Nikki and Mace are drawn to one another but "for Halflings to fall in love with a human is the unpardonable sin." I absolutely loved Nikki and Mace and the romantic tension between these two. Mace has never been tempted by a girl before, he's actually never been tempted at all so to watch their stolen moments together it was just wonderful!

Raven is the typical bad boy. He's cocky and so sure of himself but Nikki gets to him in a way no other human girl ever has. Did I mention their might be a love triangle? I know I know, I hate them too but this one works!

Heather Burch has created a novel that had me from the fast paced beginning to the nail biting ending. The characters and world she has created have me so hungry for more! I am so excited to see where Heather Burch will take us in the next book. I am anxiously awaiting!

Halfling by Heather Burch

Chased by hell hounds, nearly run off the road by a suv Nikki’s life used to be simply now she seems like every bad thing in the world is trying to kill her. With evil ready to strike at every turn Nikki ends up having three beautiful guys watching over her. They call themselves Halflings the offspring of fallen angels. They plan to keep Nikki out of dangers but sometimes that’s not easy to do. New problems arise when Nikki finds herself falling in love with two of her protectors. This comes a big shock as she has never been interested in guys, but now she can’t help but want two but more trouble is ahead than just love because Nikki needs to work out what’s going on before she is killed.

I would just like to say when people I know read books and tell me there is a MASSIVE! Love triangle in the book I normally choose to stay clear but this book was very different. The love triangle in this book was deep and emotional. Raven and Mace are two very different characters at first look I thought of mace as light and caring one and Raven as dark and sexy but there is a whole lot more to these two characters and the book was so much more than just love drama. It’s about family and making the right chooses and the evil that's inside us all it’s our choice to be good or bad and this book really did show that.

Nikki was a really good character. She is a fighter, deep down, and she faces what’s coming head on. As one of the main characters she was feisty and kind and enjoyable to read about. I also felt that there is a lot more we are going to learn about her as the series goes on. I just had a sense that there is a lot of hidden power or potential inside Nikki that’s begging to come out. The story was packed with danger, and Nikki went from a normal life to being on the supernatural hit list. There were a lot of intense moments in the book between characters and sometimes humour the book seemed to find a great mix of everything.

Now I would like to confess that as an avid reader you sometimes fall for the characters you're reading about and raven was one of those characters for me. While at first look you feel his just an arrogant pretty boy, but I felt there more to him, and I feel that over readers will spot that underneath his front, you will see someone different.

A wonderful written story Jam packed with forbidden love, danger and a burning evil that will suck you in.

A very different YA novel, from beginning to end this book will rock your world. Nikki is a 17 year old junior in high school, from there she is unlike any other teenager you would ever meet.

Guarded by three Halflings, Vine, Mace, and Raven with their guardian Will. Nikki finds the world of angels, half angels and demonic forces within a breath of her own world. Nikki is the target of the baddies, though we never find out why, (presume that will be part of Vol. 2)the action never lags. Having two of the most awesome admirers from the 'In Between' Nikki has her hands and heart full.

I loved this book. There are a lot of angel things this year, but this is one of the best. It’s one of my top recommends of 2011. . The only angel book comes remotely close is Mephisto Covenant by Trinity Faegen. It was well written and it starts with tons of action. It has it’s fluffy moments but overall it’s way better than its competition. I really don’t have anything else to say…other than that you should read it! Only mild language but definitely worth your read. It will be added to my shelf of fame after it’s renovated.

Halflings is the debut novel of author Heather Burch who has spent the last few years teaching writers how to relax. As an ordained minister, motivational speaker and a licensed esthetician, Burch has a wide knowledge base to influence her writing; and it's obvious she utilises that background.
Halflings is the story of three 'Lost Boys', sons of Fallen Angels working for Heaven, sent to Earth to protect Nikki Youngblood from a complicated and mysterious evil.
What I Liked: The story was innovative. I haven't read much angel fiction so it was interesting to see how it differed from vampires, werewolves and faeries. Nikki was a fun and strong character who worked hard to live by her beliefs while the Lost Boys, Raven, Mace and Vine were the usual sexy supernatural characters.
Vessler was an interesting character. He made me think of a strong, overwhelming perfume; you like the scent but you can't take it in such strong doses. He also left me feeling sufficiently suspicious and confused, without giving away too much or going for a silly plot twist like some YA stories.
What I didn't like: Some of the language was too floral - "You are safe now child of Man" - and almost everything Will says went right over my head. I'm not a religious person, and only really know the mythology behind the bible; I've never read it. I knew the story behind Queen Esther, but couldn't quite grasp the significance of her mention. It might be easier for other readers.
I also wanted a little more characterisation from the Lost Boys, and despite not being one of the love interests, I think I liked Vine (or Bloom) best.
One other problem I had, which I have with all YA Supernatural fiction is this overwhelming set of senses, skills and seduction these supernatural creatures seem to posses. Isn't enough that these creatures have wings, fangs, claws and venom? Do they need to be irresistible too? Are there ugly Supernatural creatures?
I'll give Burch some credit here because she introduced a Halfling who was pale, and...not quite weak, but not as overtly strong as the others. It's nice to see some weakness (beyond falling for human girls) in supernatural fiction.
For all that I'm getting sick of the re-occurrence of sexy supernaturals, I can't seem to stop myself reading about them. Halflings especially, drew me in more than any other supernatural YA since The Discovery of Witches. I found myself wanting more and I was devastated to find it ended before anything was revealed.
Halflings will be released February 1st, and it's sequel Guardian is due out in September. In the meantime, try and get your hands on 11:15: The Making of Halflings; a short illustrated story set before Halflings.

I did not finish this book, however, since I read half of it, I am going to give my thoughts on that half and explain why I chose not to finish.

I thought the premise sounded really interesting. I’ve never read an angel book and was looking forward to seeing how that story line was played out. Also, the summary promised some swoon-worthy lovin’ and I’m always up for that.

There were several formatting issues with my Kindle and while I appreciate that this was a PDF not formatted for the Kindle, it was bothersome and I think worth mentioning.

There were several times where the point of view changed. There were paragraphs of ‘she’ then all of a sudden it switched to ‘I.’ Again, maybe this is something that will get corrected before publication, so I’m not holding it against the book itself.

Here’s where I started disliking the book. There were a few instances of foreshadowing that felt silly to me. Two people would be talking and then one would think something like “I could see in his eyes that life as I knew it was about to change.” (I’m paraphrasing here, but that’s about the gist of it.) It was like the characters were taking huge leaps as to what a look or a face meant.

Then there were other little things like those below. For some reason, they just rubbed me the wrong way. It seemed to me like something a high schooler might write, trying to be extra descriptive and flowery.

“Strands of hair pressed against her forehead where her helmet held them in place, trapped like butterflies under glass.”
Her helmet hair looks like butterflies?

“A perfect nose that seemed to be crafted by Michelangelo himself. Two high cheekbones rested above a mouth that looked capable of pleasing any girl’s lips but also able to draw into a tight line of defense when necessary.”
Someone could tell all that by looking at his lips? They must be damn expressive lips.

[A]s she studied him, it seemed like the uncertainty between them created a canyon of doubt but there was a curiosity that forged a bridge neither seemed able to completely ignore.
There’s a canyon, but wait, there’s a bridge!

The characters (mostly the 3 halflings and their “guardian”) seemed to feel the need to repeat Nikki’s name over and over again. Nikki Youngblood is this and Nikki Youngblood is that and Nikki Youngblood is here and Nikki Youngblood is there. There was only 1 Nikki, I didn’t think we needed to hear her last name every single time she was mentioned.

Maybe I was in a bad mood when I started this one, but I just never could get into it and every time I read something I didn’t like, it grated on my nerves. Honestly, the only reason I read all the way to the halfway point was that I felt obligated to NetGalley and my blog. But you know what, I have a mile-high pile of books that I want to read and I don’t want to waste my time on something I’m having to force myself to stick with.

Let me conclude this by reminding everyone that these are my opinions. I personally did not like this book enough to finish it and am explaining why. You may find the writing lyrical and delightful and the things that annoyed me may be witty and expressive to you. We are different people and unlikely to have the exact same reaction to a book. And that’s okay.

It takes a great angel book to really hook me and this one did the job! I loved the story, the characters, all the twists and turns of the plot -- wonderful!! :) Can't wait to read the next one in this series.
*Full review*

Review: I admit, it's hard for me to love angel books, typically. I'm not sure why but only rarely do they grab my attention. But, Halflings was incredible! Definitely in the top 3 angel books I've ever read and I can't wait to get the 2nd book in the series.

First, Nikki was an amazing female character. I love to see someone who can run with the boys and kick some butt. Nikki is smart, determined, and fierce! She does well tackling the things that come her way, until it's more than teenage drama she is forced to deal with. For reasons unknown to her, evil creatures want her dead. But she isn't alone in the fight. She has 3 fabulous halflings helping her with the battle. 3 fabulous ...hot, male...halflings! I mean really, who wouldn't want them as bodyguards??

Mace, Raven, and Vine have missions to protect people and now that person is Nikki. She is thrown into their world and she immediately knows they are not normal guys. Mace saves her from an accident on her motorcycle, and while he tries to convince her that nothing strange happens, Nikki isn't buying it. After a while she learns what the guys really are.

Mace is the good-guy. He is strong but he follows along with the rules and tries to do what is right. He is the first to share a deep connection with Nikki. But something, or someone, throws a wrench into his plans. Raven is pretty much the total opposite of Mace. He is stubborn and has a bad attitude. He never wants to do what he is told and for some reason, Nikki loves that. But then again, he's totally hot, so I understand :) But now Nikki has a nice love triangle on her hands.

I know some people hate love triangles but I am not one of them. It's difficult to make a love triangle realistic and genuine but Heather Burch did a fantastic job at this! I really believed the connections Nikki had with Mace and Raven. Nothing seemed forced and the chemistry was there. Loved it!

I don't want to forget mentioning Vine too because he was just adorable. He's the newbie, and usually the one who tries to keep the peace between Mace and Raven. I really liked his character a lot.

The plot of Halflings was incredibly gripping. It was unique and full of action, twists, and turns that I never expected. There were so many pulse-pounding moments that had me on the edge of my seat.

Heather Burch beautifully crafted this story and everything about it drew me in. I couldn't stop reading and I'm anxiously awaiting book 2!

Highly recommended read!

I've had the privilege of reading a pre-publication manuscript and can tell you this book, Halflings, will not disappoint. Fast paced, strong plot, and compelling characters make this a to-read selection. I Love Halflings!

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Where to begin? To start off, I really wanted to like this story. There are a lot of good ideas in here. Unfortunately, to me, this book was a soup pot filled with good idea and bad execution.
Nikki is your average paranormal book heroine. She doesn’t believe in her beauty. She is not really a girly girl. And she is generally smart. Not terrible that this is the structure for most paranormal books these days. In fact, I read a number of novels that do well with this base model. Now this author layers on her on touches.

Nikki is an artist, no surprise there. Writers/Authors are creative people and tend to have their heroes and heroines creative people as well. But Nikki also drives a motorcycle. This is new or at least not done a lot. I don’t think it a spoiler to reveal that. Knowing she’s an artist and drives a motorcycle isn’t earth shattering. So that was a good thing.

The problem, I have with Nikki and most of the characters in the book, is the lack of character development. By the end of the book, I really don’t feel like I know her or can relate to her any better. I don’t have to like the main character in the story to enjoy it. But I should feel I understood the reason why they were who they were and how that relates to the story. Nikki was just one dimensional to me. As were the rest of the characters. The character I liked the most was Zero and he played a very minor role, but I found him interesting.

The story started on a bang and really kept moving from there, but I never felt part of the story. The writing was disjointed. At the end of every chapter it felt like you were hunger for a bite of a really good burger, but then the burger is gone and you now have a pencil and paper in your hand. The problem is you have no idea why the burger is gone and what happened to it. Not to mention that you are still starving. It was annoying. This writing style didn’t create a chapter ending cliffhanger to entice you to move to read on. Especially after a few chapters, when you realize that this follows a pattern every time. Just when things get good, we end up at a new place with significant time passage. In fact the timeline is horrible to follow.

I could probably say more, but why beat a dead horse. As I mentioned I received this from the publisher and who knows if I’ll get another book to review after this, but I had to be honest.

On a positive note, like I said, there were a lot of good ideas. The mythology was pretty good. So you might enjoy this one. You don’t have to take my word for it.

My Book Boyfriend if I had to choose would be Mace. But I'll post pics of the other guys too.

When I was approved to read and review this book through NetGalley I was more than excited. First off, the cover is just like pure beauty is it not? I have a thing for the color red I think. Secondly the blurb caught my attention right away. I love the whole angel theme, and this was a great little twist from other angel books out there. This book wasted no time catching your attention and hurling you into all the action. From page one it was like Heather Burch is telling you hold on to your seat, this is going to be one insane ride and it really is. From the characters whom you grow extremely attached to the insane plot that is driving the story, there is no time to calm down and gather yourself. You have to keep pushing through so you can understand it all, and quench the thirst the book leaves you with. Because trust me, this book leaves you hanging in so many ways.

One thing that I didn't enjoy with this book was after the incredible first two chapters you have so much information thrown at you and then loose site of where the book is going. I was sort of in and out of this book for the first half. I knew a great story was there, I felt it in my bones, but I was just coming up short. It was page 179 that started really hitting it off with me. After you get to a certain point it starts to slow down and you finally see the world of this book come together. Once I hit it that groove I could NOT put this book down. I loved the characters even more than before and started to put together the puzzle pieces I had gotten earlier. This is no easy puzzle to put together though folks, the Halflings world is a crazy piece of literary genius.

Like any great YA book nowadays there was one hell of a love triangle. You have the bad boy Raven and the good hearted Mace. Now I loved them both, I really did, but I definitely had my favorite. [*cough* Raven *cough*] The thing with this love triangle is that no matter who she chooses, she could never be with either one. It put a huge damper on my heart when certain things happened and left me clinching my chest for the boys I had grown to love. Nikki was seriously a breath of fresh air in this book. She was strong, knew how to hold her own, and didn't let others get to her. She was far from heartless though, and the depth of her emotions is what really endeared her to me. I wanted the book to never end, I needed to know what happened to her and her fight to figure out what was going on around her.

The ending half of this book was my favorite, like I said, I honestly could not put it down. I was so attached to everyone at this point that I didn't want to let them go. As I kept flipping the last few pages I kept hoping the page numbers would somehow double because the ending in this book is killer. KILLER I tell you! I don't want to spoil it for anyone out there but be ready to pre-order the second book in this series, because you will HAVE to. After the last page I sat stunned in my chair for a good 20 minutes. I couldn't believe it just ended that way, no doubt Heather Burch knows how to keep her readers hooked. So, if you are asthmatic [like me] make sure to keep your rescue inhaler close because this book is going to take your breath away. This was definitely a great debut book and I will be keeping an eye out for the second to this dazzling series.

cover

I love the cover of Halflings. There's something about the expression of the girl in the cover that grabs your attention and makes you not want to look away until you've figured it out.

review

Halflings wasn’t afraid to sink its teeth straight into the action! The book opens with Nikki, a perfectly normal girl, being chased by “hell hounds”. Hovering in the background are Mace, Raven and Vine who have been assigned to protect her. Who are these boys? They are halflings- half angel and half human; the product of fallen angels and humans.

Over the course of the book, we get insights into why Nikki is chased by hell hounds, an operation that might just lead to World War Three and more on the origins and nature of halflings. There’s also plenty of shadiness in the form of Damon Vessler who claims to be Nikki’s godfather. But here’s the thing… Nikki knew nothing of his existence until his recent and sudden appearance!

I’m not a huge fan of angel books but I loved the halflings! Halflings are portrayed as creatures born from the “seeds of rebellion”. Mace, Raven and Vine are beautiful to look at: with blonde hair, blue eyes and great features but what made my heart flutter was the conflict and uncertainty brewing within them! Mace, who Nikki is instantly attracted to, is caught in between two worlds and doesn’t know where he belongs. Raven, who suffers from a similar conflict, is more aggressive and is resigned to “falling” from grace.

Halflings also fight for the good side, the side that isn't very vocal in wanting them, because it's the right thing to do. All that drives them is hope. Vine, the youngest halfling, wants to be away from this eternal struggle- he wants to be oblivious to it. In other words, he wants to be human. Halflings started off fast-paced, slow down a lot and then geared up, just in time, to end on a riveting note! I’m so glad this is a series! I’d love to read more about Mace, Raven and Vine who were all gorgeous in their own way!

The only issue I have about the book is that while I loved the characters, it didn’t seem to have much plot. Don’t get me wrong… there was plenty of background information but other than that, there were just a lot of questions and loose ends that may or may not have significance in the later parts of the series. First books generally do just that. But the way the action and subplots are handled in the second book will largely determine whether I’ll be reading the later parts.

Till then, you should definitely give Halflings a try! It’s filled with promise. I just hope a lot more happens in the later parts that makes the awesome premise worth it.

Halflings. Half human... half angel.

That's all I needed to know!
It starts off quick with lots of action and you instantly get sucked right in, running through the forest and trying to catch your breath while trying to figure out what is going on, right along with Nikki Youngblood.
Nikki was definitely not who I expected her to be! From the synopsis, I got the impression of 'damsel in distress', but she is quite the opposite - this girl is super smart, gutsy, stubborn and forthright.

Meet the "Lost Boys"... Mace. Oh, sweet Mace!
The leader. The rule follower. The one with the biggest heart.
And then Raven. Raven.
The confused 'bad boy' - but instantly you can tell that it is all just a front and you will grow a soft spot for this tough guy...
And lastly, but certainly not the least in one bit, Vine.
Vine is the youngest of the three 'brothers' - innocent, sweet, and probably the strongest.

Halflings reminded me of Peter Pan's story - the angels refer to themselves as 'lost boys' and Mace definitely played the Peter Pan lead-role, while Nikki was a lot like Wendy; and "Captain Hook" and his minions are everywhere!

This book is fast paced, the story is laid out well, the writing is good and easy to follow...
but I can't help but feel that the book was a bit short! It ended too quick for me - it left me hanging and wanting to know more about ALL the characters, which is good! It ends a good spot where you know that the story will pick up where it exactly left off and storm ahead with more action, love... and lots of angel wings!

Review by Jill Williamson

Some strange things are happening to Nikki Youngblood. She’s been chased by ugly dogs and followed by some really cute guys. And she’s not sure why. The next thing she knows, all three guys enroll in her school and are in all her classes! How weird is that? But the more she learns about Mace, Raven, and Vine, the more she learns about why those weird things were happening to her. One thing is certain: life will never be the same!

Whoo! Now this was a fun read—and a quick one too. (I love quick reads.) Heather Burch has crafted an intriguing storyworld with her Halflings (half angel/half humans) and their history.

One thing... The premise of angels having mated with humans bothers me. While there are some who interpret the passage in Genesis 6:4 to mean that demons mated with human women, I find that extremely disturbing and suggest a deeper study of Genesis 6:4. (I highly recommend Randy Alcorn’s article on the subject--click here to read it.) I realize, however, that not everyone holds my view of this subject and that this is a fictional story. But if that kind of subject matter bothers you, this story might.

That being said, I was drawn into the story from page one and couldn't wait to see how this story would turn out. Luckily I knew in advance what I was in for. This is the first book in a trilogy. So I knew there would be a bit of a cliffhanger headed my way as to the overall mystery. No matter. It was still a fun, romantic read. I have no guesses as to which angel boy Nikki might choose—or if she even will! But I look forward to reading the next two books. I hope it won’t be too long of a wait because I am hooked on Halfings!

LOVE:
The love triangle in this story is pretty good. Raven is the bad boy in the story. He was presented as the one having a darker side. I love the fact that Raven acts like a tough guy, but gets derailed whenever he's around Nikki. I found it cute. On the other hand, there are also tender moments between Nikki and Mace. I also love the forbidden love theme of the story (halflings cannot fall in love with humans). I was deeply affected when Mace rejected Nikki. Most of all, I love the brotherly moment between Mace and Raven. Even though they don't see eye to eye most of the time, I can say that they care for one another.

NO LOVE:
The beginning of the story dragged on. I didn't know where the story was heading. It even made me very sleepy at one point. I also did not like (and understand) the fact that Nikki barged into the halflings' home out of the blue. I really don't understand why this was necessary. It's rude and intrusive. It made me dislike Nikki.

MUSINGS:
The writing was okay. It's probably the main positive thing I can say about this book. But what makes this book interesting for me is the convergence of science and beliefs. This is the only reason why I would pick up the sequel. For me, this book is forgettable. It has its good parts, and it has its bad parts. It's an angel book. But that's just it, it's another one of those angel books. Nothing stands out.

Thanks NetGalley.

The first thing that caught my attention about Halflings was the beautiful, visual writing. It reminded me of The Mortal Instrument series but more religious since it talked about heaven, hell and God (but not in a preachy way). Peter Pan felt like an inspiration for some aspects of the book, especially the Halfling characters. Peter Pan is one of my favorite books and I loved the way it influenced this story. The only thing I didn’t like about this book was the term “Halflings” because it invoked this image in my head of short, hairy boys. And then when I learned that these Halflings are supposed to protect the main character, Nikki, it invoked a Snow White and the Seven Dwarves image in my head. But it’s not like that at all, I promise. Heather Burch’s Halflings are really half human, half angel. I enjoyed the characters. They were interesting and complex and I thought the heroine was very unique. The romance was adorable and I even liked the love triangle – it was well done. The author builds an interesting world full of mystery and sets you up for a great series to come. Heather doesn’t point out who the villan is, but I have an idea and if I’m right, the villan would be one of the most unique and interesting ones that I’ve come across. The ending left me full of questions and eager to read more.

I really enjoyed Halflings! It was amazing. It had me gasping, crying, awing, and doing a little happy dance. The writing was very well written and it was enjoyable all around.

Cover: The cover is quite simple. The wings in the background have a meaning, but I'm not gonna mention it! :) I love the simplicity of it. Some covers can rock the over done look, but this works perfectly!

Plot: The plot kept me interested throughout the whole book. It had many plot twists, even though I saw some of them coming. It was one of those stories that I read in a day, actually a couple hours and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Characters:
Lets start with Nikki. She was a kick butt black belt and an artist who did not run away. Even when being chased by Hell Hounds she ran, but in the end turned around and tried to fight. She stood up for what she believed in, and didn't take anyone's crap. She was in it till the end, and followed her gut. She sacrificed her happiness for someones well being!

Then there's Mace. Ah Mace. Everyone wants a Mace. He is sweet and caring, and only wants what's best for people. He is the rule follower and puts everyone's well being over his. He is the one that you would want to have your back, no matter what.

All in all: This was a really good book! It doesn't come out till February 1, but it is worth it to be put on your to be read list! 51 out of 51 tacos!

I am so confused by this book. From the very beginning I could barely follow it. For all the characters, we are told one thing about them, and see them act in ways that totally contradict what we've been told. They are all trying so badly to fit into stereotypes it hurts.

Nikki has potential to be a great protagonist; self sufficient, strong, brave. We are told she is all these things. And yet - she spends so much time crying and fainting that you get whiplash.

Her best friend's first scene with Raven is so, so painful, I almost gave up the book right there. She's made out to be a total shallow ditz (and is made to look that way before this too, but this particular scene was really over the top), presumably to make Nikki look awesome by comparison - but really it just makes Nikki look dumb and desperate for having such a cliche plot device with no personality for a friend.

And I didn't see the appeal to either Mace or Raven. They don't have much depth, and quite honestly I find them both a little bit useless. I'm not a huge fan of love triangles, either, and this one was so overdone with the jumping back and forth from one to the other - again with the character inconsistency! It didn't help that I personally didn't see why Nikki would waste her time with either of them, I guess.

Also, the writing was pretty jarring and amateur.

There is a major love triangle going on here. Between two halfings and a mortal. In the modern world known as Mace and Raven, who are both majorly crushing on Nikki. They were sent there to watch over her with their other brother Vine ,but as they get to know her they both fall under her spell. You see she's not just any other mortal she can see their realm. They both fall for her for different reasons,Raven for her strength and Mace for her love of the world. But Nikki's worried when three female halfings also show up to protect her.Are they taking away the only family she has left after her parents are killed in a car crash. Was it really on accident or is someone trying to kill her and her family? And when her godfather turns on her she only has the halflings for help,so she can't shut them out of her life as I think she was planing to do.

I had the opportunity to pre-read the Halflings book and I must say Heather is a fine artist as well as a writer. The descriptive scenes she painted in my mind still remain very vivid ! I didn't want to read several hours at a time but very hard to find a good place to stop, needless to say any more but I promise you it's a page turner.ENJOY !!

In Halflings, the characters straddle two worlds, and when worlds meet, there is danger and promise. The halflings and the one they protect will discover each other while discovering the reasons they are targeted by unholy pursuers.
Heather Burch has built a story that won't stop! I can't wait for the reveal!
