The anthology is the product of the combined vision of three organizations dedicated to the enhancement of education in Bamboo Ridge Press, Curriculum Research and Development Group, and Hawaii Education Association. Poetry. Fiction. Pacific Island Studies.
I have to admit that I didn't finish this book. I got about 2/3 of the way through and then had to return it to the library because my vacation in Hawaii was ending. That said, I probably don't need to read that last 1/3 of the book to know it's a great anthology filled with local voices, local stories, and local culture written entirely by locals of all ages. I loved that the editors included stories/prose/poems written by locals of all ages and abilities, not just adults or seasoned, professional writers. Great book if you're interested in what life is like for the locals in Hawaii.
Like most anthologies, this had a few jewels set amongst the typical and just eh. The short story/ essay (it was hard to tell if much of the prose was fact or fiction) about the tsunami aftermath in Hilo was particularly affecting. It was interesting to read several stories and poems in Pidgin dialect, and I learned a few things about the local culture reading this.
