When Gotham City's Clown Prince of Crime discovers a thousand-year-old relic that makes him invincible, Batman must find a way to save the city from these two madcap maniacs. Original. (Graphic Novel)
The animated Batman version of the Joker gets a hold of The Mask and 4 issues of light amusement occur. There's no real story here, just the Joker terrorizing Gotham without being all that funny.
It's one of those crossovers that feel immediately obvious when you hear them, and could have you dread for some dark times if you cared for either character, which I admittedly don't. It takes the best it can out of the idea, addresses the unfortunate fact that the Joker with the Mask on can't possibly be much crazier or wackier than he already is, and had a bit of character growth for everyone as well as a couple decent plots and ploys, albeit not laughs.
It's also a definite plus to see the Joker actually be concerned with humour and laughs, once again, rather than the modern interpretation of a blood-thirsty psychopath obsessed over driving Batman mad. Fuck that guy.
Joker/Mask is the collection of a four issue series from DC and Dark Horse. The story was written by Henry Gilroy with art from Ramon F. Bachs and Howard M. Shum. I have not seen the work of any of these creators before but Gilroy is a co-writer on the Star Wars: Clone Wars TV series among other animation series credits. Bachs is a Spanish artist who has worked on a number of Star Wars comics as well as some titles for Marvel and DC. Shum is a writer on a number of titles as well as an artist.
The Joker decides to go to a museum and blow up an exhibition featuring frowning clown masks. However his day does not go well as the head henchman has sent the other henchmen to the wrong location and Harley Quinn has removed the detonators from all the explosives. But the henchman discovers a mask that gives the wearer a manic energy and superhuman powers. Wearing the mask, the Joker is able to beat Batman severely enough that he is out of action feared dead and the Joker is left free to pursue his insane agenda across Gotham while monopolising the television airwaves. Harley fears for the Joker and enlists Poison Ivy's help to remove the mask from the Joker before he blows up Gotham for real.
This story features the Joker on maximum overdrive and overkill. Even Harley Quinn finds it hard to continue to love her Mister J and the Joker/Mask has to keep coming up with wilder and more extreme exploits to stop himself becoming bored with how easy committing crime is with super powers. While there is some really good comic moments in this book, the manic intensity of the Joker/Mask combination is sometimes too much for the reader as it is for the characters in the story. With the Joker/Mask as the main character throughout the book, the pressure to come up with gag after gag relentlessly is a perhaps a drag on the writing.
I liked the art from Bachs and Shum. It is very cartoony in style but fit in well with cartoon qualities of the Mask and the manifestation of his powers. There are even some lovely renderings of Poison Ivy as well.
A quick and cheerful read that won't change your life but is worth a look if you can find it.
I'm a sucker for a crossover. This story works well, as if the Mask were just another magic artifact in the DC universe. The art is exactly the sort of cartoony that you need to match the manic tone. My only gripe is that the Mask's backstory wasn't a necessary inclusion and bogs down the story a little.
A shameless crossover? Yes. Amazingly, they perfectly captured the maniacy of the Joker. It's a mad, fun romp. If only it didn't drag the Mask backstory along with it...
A bonkers crossover but so much fun. Joker ends up with that mask and puts it on. So what happens when an insane maniac puts on a mask that lets you live out your inner most desires...Joker cranked up to 11 and now he has taken over the TV. Joker/Mask 24/7 and Batman is out of action for the most part. How can they stop an invincible lunatic? Will the jokes keep exploding?
When the craziest characters in all comics meet together and combine their insanity. I really liked this series because I'm a big fan of Joker and the mask. I prefer the mask as some superhero like the movie not like this kind of villain.
4 issues. I was just wondering if Mask was inspired by Joker. This issue is so cartoonishly cute and classic, fun. I love how Joker keeps being perturbed by how wrinkly his suit is. Humor more Invader Zim than Mask movies though.
