A Practical Approach to Teach Children (and Adults) to Read Music. Bertalot's fresh approach motivates both experienced teachers and novices alike. He identifies five basic principles and twelve steps to success.
The cover says it teaches you to read music, but it doesn't. Rather, this book describes a system of teaching primarily children in a choir setting to sight-sing from written music. Good enough, not what I wanted, but I read it all because some of the guy's teaching methods were worthwhile in a more general sense. For instance, he never tells a student what they did wrong, but asks questions until the student figures it out for himself. His entire teaching style is based on respect for the student, that the student does not need constant hand holding. I like that. There wasn't a lot of this, so it's not worth reading the book for this reason, but what there was of it made a good impression on me.
Whilst the style of writing takes some getting used to, it trains you in the method and attitude as you read. everything is common sense and I already did a lot of it, but I found putting it into words and practice helpful in consolidating my approach. It is easy to read, thought provoking and useful.
