If you want to understand the larger context of Karbala going all the way back to the beginnings of Islam through the fall of the Umayyad dynasty, this is excellent resource to put it all into perspective. I didn’t know I was going to get a refresher on Islamic history but I’m so glad that I did. This book doesn’t just summarize the eras of RasoolAllah, the Khalifas, Imam Ali, and Imam Hasan bin Ali, but discusses their impact on a growing Imam Husain.
Karbala isn’t just a random event in Islamic history, it is the culmination of thousands of years of the monotheistic faiths and the efforts of the Abrahamic prophets. It’s is the result of the failure of the Muslims to heed the Prophet’s call on Ghadir, of forsaking the truth after him. It’s the result of the three khalifas spreading Deen by the sword, effectively turning it in empire. It is the result of the gradual deterioration of the purity of the ummah, until a tyrant like Yazid Ibn Muawiya could be called “amirul momineen”. Karbala was the pinnacle of darkness against the pinnacle of light. And eternal light, in the form of Hussain’s selflessness and complete devotion to God, prevails.
The description of the actual horrors of the tragedy is lacking, but for the purpose of understanding the larger context, this is a good start.
