Rate this book
A unique offering of a book and CD recorded by Judy Collins , featuring the classic when you wish upon a star, your dreams come true.

Grammy award-winning singer Judy Collins and illustrator Eric Puybaret, who together created the New York Times best-selling version of Over the Rainbow, are collaborating once again to bring a classic song to life.

Written by Leigh Harline and Ned Washington in 1940, the Academy Award-winning When You Wish Upon a Star is beloved by listeners from 2 to 92 for its sweet hopefulness, poignant melody, and simple yet profound lyrics. In all probability, it is very likely we know the rhyme. Most children probably have made that wish every night to the stars… (At least, I know I did as a kid. To be honest, I still do! ☺️)

“Star light, star bright
First star I see tonight
I wish I may
I wish I might
Have the wish
I wish tonight.”

But what makes this book so beautiful, is the gorgeous illustrations by Alexandra Day and the lovely positive message that goes along with it.

Each child and parent will have an opportunity to enjoy the star gazing colorful beauty of this book for each bedtime reading.

When You Wish Upon a Star by Ned Washington, Leigh Harline and Eric Puybaret is a beautiful illustrated book of the classic song.

The book is filled with beautiful illustrations featuring multicultural children from all over the world and my class enjoyed seeing kids who looked like them in the illustrations. The song is included on a CD sung by Judy Collins and although the song is beautifully performed it was a bit classical for my students who said that they would rather that I sang them the song instead of playing the CD (and normally they're excited to hear CD's because they hear me sing every day).

This is a book that can be enjoyed by kids of all ages in a classroom format and kids 4-8 who are reading independently.

Excellent book on this classic song. The illustrations are amazing, magical and whimsical. The songs on the CD are beautiful and add something extra to the book.

The art in this book is magnificent. The song, put to a book, is wonderfully well done.

The pages are very beautiful. We didn't listen to the disc and I think that will help . Otherwise, the book is a bit odd without so many words.

3.5 stars (so far)

Haven't listened to the CD yet, but I had to read the book twice, back-to-back, the first time it appeared, so the 2yo approves.

The lyrics of the song as illuminated by artist Eric Puybaret. THESE PAINTINGS ARE GORGEOUS!

P.S. I liked that for the line “Anything your heart desires will come to you,” he paints children going towards their dreams, not their desires just coming to them.

Great artwork, not a great message. Lots of references to Fate.

I really enjoyed the cd attached to the book with the three songs sung and written by Judy Collins. Her voice is beautiful. I also love the words to song When You Wish Upon Star even if I hadn’t heard it through Disney for years.

I liked the style the art was done in but the images to me didn’t capture the song. Listening to the song it sounds very different from the snippets we hear from the Disney commercials and I feel as if the images where really all over the place. I did not get the feelings that these were dreams of children or adults. I just did not understand some of the connection.

My five-year-old son picked this book out from the library this week. He called it the "Twinkle Star book" -- close enough.

The illustrations are truly wonderful and wonder-filled; looking at them is like entering a sumptuous and slightly strange dream.

The text is a bit weak to stand on its own apart from the music. I'm not sure how this can be corrected since the song IS the text. Maybe it could have been embellished somehow? Anyway, that is my only criticism of this beautiful book.

The illustrations are okay, sure. But sometimes these song-lyric-as-book-for-the-kids ideas work and sometimes they just clang a bit. This one is a clanger. Can't explain it - just a bit shit, a bit out of date, a bit of a dud. Doesn't work.

I read this book before bed, and played the music cd... oh my goodness. The music and illustrations are so enchantingly soothing, It was putting ME to sleep. Very good for bedtime with kids.

My only complaint is that this spells "through" "thru"
which I don't think is good for a children's book. The Judy Collins CD is a nice bonus.
