Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield have made a bet with their brother Steven. If Steven wins first prize in the science fair, Elizabeth and Jessica will have to do his chores for a week. Now Steven has won the bet, and it's work, work, work for Jessica and Elizabeth.
That's when the twins decide to start another bet. Mr. Wakefield's birthday is coming up. If they bake a better birthday cake, then the first bet is off. But if Steven's is better, he will never let them forge who's the boss!
Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
Bossy Steven It’s “Science Day” at the elementary school. It’s neither of the twins favorite subject but Steven has a project on display. Steven and the twins have a bet. If his volcano project wins first place they’ll do his chores around the house for a week. If the twins win he’ll do theres. Steven then shows a judge how it works and answers her questions. Liz is proud of Steven and wants him to win. Jessica just doesn’t want to do his chores. But Liz gets her wish and he wins first place.
Mrs. Wakefield says he deserves a special dinner. He says he wants cheeseburgers, pizza, and apple pie, but Alice says she is not gonna be cooking all night and Ned says he gets ONE dinner. Steven says he wants them to clean his room. It’s a week’s worth of mess. Ned says they’re stuck with Steven’s OLD chores since that was the bet. He tells the twins not to slam the car door because of his sensitive ears. Jessica slams the car door.
Since it’s Steven’s turn to set the table, Liz says she’ll do it. Steven tells her don’t forget to fold the napkins nicely. Her mom reminds her it’s just a week. Liz says she doesn’t mind. They have fries. There’s no ketcup. Liz has to get it. Then the salt and pepper aren’t there. Steven makes Jessica go fetch it. Steven reminds them about cleaning his room and then helping Ned with the dishes. Jessica wants to watch tv and tries to get Liz do it. Ned says they can do it together and still watch the movie. Her mother says she’ll be the one to decide not Steven. The twins know then it’ll be a looooong week!
The twins complain to their friends that he made them make his bed twice and then clean his room. Eva tells her to make another bet with Steven-one that they know they can win-. They give them some ideas (spelling contest, name more colors, etc). Jessica says they can have a better present contest for their father’s bday but it’s no good. Ned always likes all his present. Steven comes over and tells Jessica he promised dad he’d help him clean out the garage. Liz says she’ll do it by herself if she wants to stay. Jessica promises she’ll do the next one. She vows to find a way go get out of doing them at all.
While they’re working, her father says he’d rather be on a fishing trip -like he and Grandpa Wakefield use to take-. He talks about his mothers lemonade and cookies. Liz all of a sudden knows what to get their father. Liz is telling Jessica but Steven comes out and they think he over hears them. Mrs. Wakefield brings up Mr. Wakefield’s bday and Steven says he’s going to make him a cake. The twins accuse him of stealing their idea. There mom suggest they do two cakes. Steven says the twins will make his cake for him, There mom says she’ll have a talk with him and tell him to make his own cake.
Todd says he’s a good cook and his favorite is marble cake with confetti icing. I VOTE FOR THIS ONE! Liz says Ned’s favorite cake is angel food cake. Steven says he’s making a chocolate cake with secret ingrediants. It’ll be a piece of cake (pun intended). They try to get him to do a second bet. IF there cake is better the whole bet is off. Steven finally agrees and before walking off reminds them one of them has to get the leaves out of the pool. Todd tells Liz he bets they’ll make the better cake.
They make a big mess, but the twins follow the recipe carefully. Steven just seems to be making it up as she goes along. Todd comes by but Steven won’t allow him to help. He says he’ll help them clean up. Steven’s cake is lumpy and covered in chocolate frosting. It’s hard to cut. It looks dry and crumbly. Ned says it’s “an unsual recipe”. It’s hard and dry and taste terrible. Steven’s ingrediants are peanut butter and marshmallow. Even he has to admit it’s bad. The twins cake look golden. Ned thinks it’s beautiful and taste delicious. So the twins swin the contest and don’t have to do any more chores They make him apologize before giving him some cake.
Mr. Wakefield says to celebrate his bday they’ll be going on a fishing trip. Jessica doesn’t think this is such a good idea.
My Thoughts This is exactly why I’m glad I didn’t grow up with a brother. NO THANK U to being bossed around. I have a male cousin who substitutes in the “big brother” type role and he is ENOUGH. Even he’s gotten better tho. I guess I’m just too much of a “Sagitarius” to put up with someone like Steven. Even tho I’m not big on angel food cake and out of all the ones named would rather they have took Todd’s suggestion for a marble cake, I would have tired the twins cake. I remember one time when I did give someone a surprise German chocolate cake and throw them a surprise party. I didn’t bake it tho. Went right to the bakery and bought it. MUCH EASIER that way and they appreciated it just as much.
In the last book, the twins and Steven made a bet that if Steven wins the science fair prize, the twins have to do his chores for a week. It happens, and they are frustrated with doing his chores, so they cal off that bet and decide to make cakes for one of their parents birthdays, and the one that had the last liked cake would have to do chores. Steven made a cake from peanut butter and marshmallows that no one liked, and the twins made angel food cake which everyone loved, so no more chores!
Steven is the worst. He bets the twins he’ll win the science fair, and if he does, they have to do all his chores for a week. Of course he wins (vinegar and baking soda volcano) and is the worst. He just is. Liz gets stuck with the most chores of course. Jess bets him they’ll make Ned the best birthday cake - and if they win, no more chores. Arrogant Steven just throws stuff in a bowl then puts it in the microwave. I think you know who wins. But what gets me is Alice and Ned just go along with Steven being such a jerk. Not cool. My rating - 2/10 - Steven sucks. Also, check out the twins on the inside covers!
I feel like this plot has been done a million times: siblings make bet, the loser has to do the winner's chores, the winner becomes an enormous bossy-boots because of it. I think the thing I found most surprising here is just how many chores the kids seem to be expected to do, given their age. Setting the table, sure, but cleaning the pool? A seven-year-old? No need for a cleaner when you have three tiny kids!
I think the twins lose a bet w/ Steven & have to do his chores for a week. But then they get off the hook when they cook angel food cake (by the recipe) & Steven invents his own cake, that doesn't taste very good--for their mom's birthday. Mmmm...this story made me hungry for cake...
Steven was a butthead and it made me happy that I didn't have a brother. But he sometimes came through for the twins. This was an interesting installment in the series because it revolved around Steven who was often mentioned in the series but rarely spotlighted.
