BOO! It's almost Halloween, and identical twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield have two great costumes to choose from: a witch outfit and a princess dress. Both girls want to be the princess. This becomes a problem. And the result is a Halloween full of surprises!
Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
Sweet Valley Kids Trick or Treat The twins get off the bus and look at all the scary decorations. They both agree they can’t wait for Halloween. Steven tries to scare them by saying a house on their street belongs to a witch bbut then he says “GOTCHA!” The twins go home and try on their old costumes from last year (clown suits). They agree their babyish. Then Steven tries to scare them again by popping up and putting a bag over his head. Liz is missing a tooth and Steven says she looks like a jack o lantern. She tells Jessica she can’t wait for her to be missing a tooth too so they can look alike again.
Mrs. Otis the next day says they all get to carve a pumpkin and the winner gets to lead the class parade. They all take a vote (scary face and funny face). Funny wins. Then, Mrs. Otis lets them all make their faces on white paper. Todd shows Liz his drawing. It has a tooth missing and he says it’s a “Elizabeth Pumpkin”. Mrs. Otis then has them all take their drawings to the front board so they can vote. The m ost popular are Todd’s and Ellen’s. Todd wins the vote.
At home, Mrs. Wakefield gives the girl’s a bunch of costumes. One is a dragon’s costume and the other is a Wild West cowgirl outfit, but their too big. But they see a princess dress and a witch’s costume. They both want the princess dress. The girls get a scare. There’s spider on the bed, but it turns out just to be a fake spider curtesy of Steven.
Mrs. Otis wants to know what her students are gonna be for Halloween. Caroline says a a genie. Lois says the toothfairy. Winston is going to be an alien. Todd a ghost. Lila a Mexican lady. There’s also a tiger, a circus clown, and a ballerina. Ken is going o be a football player. Mrs. Otis asks Jessica what her costume will be and she says the princess. Liz says at recess maybe they should flip a coin. Jessica says she can’t be a princess because they have perfect smiles and she has a tooth missing. Liz points out hers will probably come out any day now. They both agree to decide later.
After dinner, Mr. Wakefield suggest they go to the haunted house. Every year the community center has a haunted house and a party. The lobby is decorated to look like a dungeon. Mr. Wakefield asks if they want him to come with them. He always has but now they’re in the second grade so they tell him no. After the tunnel, they go play games, and bob for apples. The twins agree the dungeon was scarier than last year and go back a second time.
At home, the twins and Steven carve a pumpkin that looks like a vampire. They’re mother suggests they roast the nuts in the oven. The twins and Steven decorate their faces with pumpkin seeds. Their mother asks who’ll wear the princess dress and Jessica says it’s her. Liz is angry. Their mother says they need to settle it by tomorrow. The next morning, Jessica’s loses her tooth. If Liz can’t be the princess because of a missing tooth. She can’t either. So, Jessica tries to hide it by talking with her mouth closed but this doesn’t fool Liz for long. Liz says it doesn’t matter one can be the princess or the witch for the parade and then they can switch for trick or treating later. Jessica lets Liz be the Princess for the parade. Then she has an idea how to get Steven back.
At school, the kids pumpkins are lined up on the bale. Mrs. Armstrong chooses Mrs. Otis’s class and they get a ribbon. Mrs. Otis costume is she’s a chalk board. There are three awards (scariest, prettiest, best teachers). Winston wins the scariest. Mrs. Otis wins the best teacher’s costume.
Jessica’s big idea is to jump out of the closet and scream at Steven. It works tho. He tells them not to do it again. They tell him not to do it again. When they go trick or treating the twins switch costumes. Ms. Wakefield goes as .. a man with a mustache? Mrs. Brant is impressed with their costume and gives them apples. Todd has whip cream and tries to spray who he thinks is Liz, but Jessica tells him it’s not Liz. Liz scares Steven who thinks she’s Jessica. They all tell Mrs. Otis about all the candy they got. Then they talk about trying out for the Thanksgiving play and trying out for parts. The next book is about Winston getting a part in the play.
My Thoughts It featured my favorite holiday so points for that alone. Jessica’s idea was a really 9really0 good one and I’m impressed that it came from her since she’s usually the more selfish of the two. Of coure, I always wanted to be the witch. Prelude maybe? I do remember one year I came out in just the pointed hat and I nearly gave my little cousin a heartache. They had to tell him you see its (me). I didn’t even have on a mask. It took him AGES to calm down. Lol He really thought I was a witch. One of my other favorite books was always Ramona the Pest which chapter about hHalloween and how she wanted to be the baddest witch in the world. Who could ever forget her mother’s reply. “Sometimes I think you are.” Lol. I’m frankly surprised that Jessica didn’t win scariest and Liz prettiest considering they always win EVERYTHING in these series. And was the witches house Steven pointed out Nora Mercandy’s grandmother and grandfather?
Rating: 6 Yeah I know I usually give these books five because as a whole they’re pretty basic but I’m partical. So I rated it just a little higher than normal.

One of my favourite sweet valley kids books! I liked the halloween atmosphere in school and outside, the costume of the kids, also the characters were good even the side characters were really good (a delightful book to read in the halloween season) Verdict: (7.4/10)
I loved this book about the twins and Halloween. It was the first time that Jessica wasn't a complete brat. There was a moment about the costumes, but it was resolved quick enough. The ended up sharing each costume.
Jessica got to be the Witch during school parade and then Elizabeth when they went Trick or Treating. I thought it was a great idea. I also liked them scaring their brother Steven who constantly was scaring them.
The second grade class won big during Halloween contests. Their pumpkin won blue ribbon, Winston their class mate won best kids costume and their teacher won among the teachers. All around it was cute and fun.
It was the second of four I read in one day of the Sweet Valley Kids books and I like them a lot. Defiantly would been great read as a kid, but I did have a life back then that was more fun I guess.

Elizabeth and Jessica keep getting played by Steven, their brother and they need a plan to get back at him. At the same time they are having a tooth crisis, a competition for the best carved pumpkin and the twins have to share their Halloween costumes!
I really enjoyed this as an adult (aka not the target audience). It’s really packed with Halloween goodness and obviously it’s a quick read. I had this book back in the 90s so the cover alone is so nostalgic for me.
A delightful Halloween read with fun and a bit of mischief. Costumes, carved pumpkins, activities and interactions bring Halloween excitement to Elizabeth and Jessica.
The girls partake in all the traditional Halloween activities including class pumpkin carving and deciding who will get what costume. Each twin loses a front tooth.
It’s Halloween in Sweet Valley and all of the kids in Mrs. Otis’s second grade class are excited about the upcoming jack-o-lantern competition and costume parade. Elizabeth and Jessica have grown out of their matching clown costumes from the previous Halloween, so Alice buys a box of new costumes from a yard sale. Two are the right size for the twins: a witch costume and a princess costume. The trouble is, they both want to be the princess.
Meanwhile, Steven is doing his best to show his Halloween spirit by scaring his younger sisters with a rubber spider. When he teases them for being chickens, Jessica warns Steven that they’ll get back at him.
This has to be the most boring book in the series so far, which doesn’t make sense at all when Halloween is such a great event to play with. There’s very little conflict in here at all, and no real stakes, even in seven-year-old terms. Even at 71 large print pages, it dragged.
Sweet Valley Kids 12 - Sweet Valley Trick or Treat It’s Halloween, and the twins can’t decide which costumes they want. Plus, Steven keeps scaring them (he really is a jerk as a kid). Then Alice brings home a box of secondhand costumes, and the only two that fit are a Princess and a Witch - and they both want the Princess. Mrs W tells them to work it out. I feel like she should have just let them choose their own and avoided this issue. Anyway... Jess keeps telling everyone she’s going to be a Princess, and to Liz’s credit, she stands up to her. But Jess says Liz can’t be a Princess because she lost a tooth and Princesses have pretty smiles 😬 Ouch. Guess who then loses her tooth? Anyway, Jess (surprisingly) comes up with the idea that they switch costumes so they get to be both. Then they hatch a plan to get even with Steven (pretty sure that’s an SVT title). It works, and now everyone is talking about Thanksgiving 💁🏼♀️ My rating - 5/10 - We don’t do Halloween here (well it’s coming in lately) but it was fun to read about, and points for Jess coming up with the compromise. #sweetvalley #sweetvalleykids #sweetvalleytwins #unicornclub #sweetvalleyjnrhigh #sweetvalleyhigh #sweetvalleysenioryear #sweetvalleyuniversity #sweetvalleyseries #bookreview
This was the earliest source of information which introduced the concept of Halloween to me as a child growing up. It made Halloween (and the consequent Trick or Treating come alive for me, seeing that we don't celebrate this event in the Philippines (although times are changing).
It's almost Halloween and everyone in Mrs. Otis's second-grade class is excited. In preparation for the upcoming school parade, each student draws a pumpkin and then votes on the best one. Three guesses as to whom did Todd Wilkins ends up drawing.
Meanwhile, the twins are arguing over who will get to wear the princess costume on Halloween, while the other twin is left with the witch costume, which neither twin really wants to wear (I guess when you're that age, you just want to be all pink and glitzy). The solution they ultimately arrive at will surprise the jaded reader but will accentuate the bonds of closeness between the twins.
The cover on the one I read was the classic cover. I disliked the newer ones. ---------------- It's Halloween in Sweet Valley, and the Wakefield Household is full of tricks and treats. The tricks are by brother, Steven, and the treats are a witch dress and a princess dress for Jessica and Elizabeth. The twins argue about who should wear which dress, with Jessica assuming the princess dress will be hers. Luckily, Jessica loses her loose tooth, and comes up with a plan to share the dresses, which works great.
