Elizabeth’s Broken Arm
Mrs. Otis announces someone will be coming to visit their class from the zoo. They’ll be brining a snake, a tarantula, and a leopard and they’ll need an assistant. Everyone in the class wants to do it so Mrs. Otis says they’ll have a contest. On the board, she puts each of their names and ten stars by each. If you lose stars by (being late, being absent, not having assignments done, or talking during class) it counts toward Friday where whoever has the most stars wins. If there’s a tie, a question will be asked about the zoo and whoever gives the best answer wins.

The contest is six days away. This is how the class is fairing. Liz is in the lead and still has all her stars. Lila has nine stars. So do Caroline and Andy. Amy has eight stars (She was late and forgot her homework). Ellen and Jessica have six stars (They were caught talking and whispering). After school, the twins go to Amy’s. After having a snack, they go play on what Amy calls “The Elephant Tree”. (It’s trunk looks like an elephants leg). While Liz is on a branch it starts to crack. Jessica tries to grab her but it’s too late and she falls.

Mr. Sutton takes Liz to the hospital where Mrs. Wakefield is waiting. She and Liz go in while Mr. Sutton, Amy, and Jessica wait in the waiting area. When Liz comes back, she has a cast. She shows them the X-ray where her bone was was broken. She also got a special pen from the nurse that writes in different colors. Jessica signs the cast with a heart and a get well soon. Amy signs the cast that she’s sorry about the tree.

Despite Liz’s protest, Mrs. Wakefield still makes her stay home from school. Even after reading her book about zoo animals twice, the time drags by. Liz finds her mother and starts to whine about her arm hurting. Her mother’s suggestion is to take a nap? Then she gets a delivery of balloons from the Suttons. Instead of taking a nap, Liz decides to help her mother bake peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. Then the doorbell rings again.

Meanwhile, Jessica is having a horrible day! Since Liz isn’t there, she gets stuck with Winston as an art partner. She leaves her lunch at home because Liz is the one that reminds her. Mrs. Otis gives her lunch money but they’re having meat loaf and creamed corn. Jessica’s least favorite foods. On the bus, she gets picked on by Charlie and Jerry. When she gets home, she finds out Liz has gotten flowers, candy, and balloon (deliveries). Jessica is all to happy to tell her the bad news that she and Lila are tied in the contest.

The next day is Thursday and Liz goes back to school. They have a special show and tell and she gets to tell everyone what happened. Jessica keeps trying to put in her commentary but no one is interested and tell her to be quiet. By lunch -and recess- Jessica is mad and not talking to Elizabeth. In class, Lila and Liz are still tied. Jessica sees Lila walk over to Liz’s desk, take her spelling homework, rip it up, and throw it in the trash. But no one knows she saw. When Liz looks for her homework it’s not there. Caroline says she saw Lila take it, but Lila says Caroline is lying. The teacher is surprised that Liz doesn’t have her homework but says nothing and erases a star. Jessica is happy and thinks Liz doesn’t need to get all the attention *and* be the zoo keeper assistant too.
In class (the next day) Lila and Ellen are caught whispering when Ellen passes Lila a drawing of a skinny guy (and says it’s Winston) and makes a crack about his ears. They both lose a point. Now Liz and Lila both have eight. Mrs. Otis asks Lila what a nocturnal animal and Lila answers a animal

that knocks on wood like a wood pecker. Liz knows the answer from her book and says it’s an animal that stays up during the night. Jessica exclaims it’s not fair. The question was too hard. Liz wonders why jessica is so mad at her. The twins aren’t in great moods when they get home, so there mom gives them cookies. Liz asks why Jess is mad at her. Jess says it’s because she broke her arm and Liz says she won’t do it again. Jessica thinks having a broken arm sounds like fun because of all the attention and the presents. Liz tells her it wasn’t. Jessica tells her she’s happy she got to be the assistant. Lila probably wouldn’t know what to do with the animals.
At the end of the book, Liz gets back at Lila by putting a fake spider in her lunch. She and Jessica decide she needs to be taught a lesson for what she did to Liz.

My Thoughts
This one was weird for a lot of reasons. First of all, I don’t even know why half of em wanted to be assistants when the animals were a SNAKE, a spider, and a leopard. Ok so the leopard maaaybe. It depends on how tame it is. I assume it probably is. I can see the boys maybe caring about a snake and a spider. I certainly wouldn’t have wanted to volunteer to help with either of these. I don’t see it for Jessica or Lila or Ellen. All I have to say is these are some BRAVE little girls! Mine would have been the only hand in the class *not* raised.

The other weird thing about this is Jessica actually thought a broken arm sounded fun? WTH! So you’d take a broken arm for some candy that you could get at the grocery store that your father whose a LAWYER could easily buy you. Or balloons that again you can get in a store that will probably deflate after a week. Or flowers that again you can buy at either a florist shop or a store that also will die in some days. Your jealous of a heavy, UNCOMFORTABLE, object that’s gonna be on your arm for some weeks and restrict you from doing somethings. Oh yeah and did I mention ITS PAINFUL. You want that for some things you can get at the store and the attention of your classmates?
Now I know Jessica is in the second grade, but even if I was in the second grade I’d know I wouldn’t want a BROKEN ARM. That was just NON-SENSE for her to get mad over.

So there is a zookeeper coming with a couple of animals and the teacher wants an assistant. To pick the assistant teacher decides to have a competition where students start with 10 stars and lose one star each for not doing home work, being absent etc. Meanwhile Elizabeths arm is broken and she gets a lot of attention while Jessica keeps having bad days...
And because of being absent due to her broken arm Elizabeth couldn't go to school for a day or two and she loses stars which is not fair in my opinion...

Elizabeth’s Broken Arm
A Zoo Keeper is coming to visit the twins class, and one lucky student gets to be the assistant to help with the Boa Constrictor, Tarantula and Leopard... and everyone wants to do it 😳 Mrs Otis (clever old thing) decides to to give student 10 stars. Each time they talk in class, forget homework, or are out sick (not sure I agree with that last one) they lose a star. The person with the most at the end wins, and if there’s a tie, she’ll ask zoo questions. Jess wants to win badly, but is almost immediately at the bottom 😂 Lila is second and Liz is first. The twins go to Amy’s house to play, which involves climbing a giant tree. A branch snaps and Liz goes down... her arm is broken and she has to miss school 😞 But her family and the Sutton’s send her gifts, and she feels better. Jess has a horrible day without Liz (no one to partner with except Winston) and is super jealous when she sees all the gifts, more so when everyone wants to hear all about Liz’s broken arm. Liz hers everything! Lila and Liz are now tied for first place, and Lila takes Liz’s homework off her desk, rips it up and throws it away. Jess sees and says nothing. Liz loses a star and Lila is winning - until she laughs out loud at a drawing of Winston Ellen passes her. Tied again! Mrs Otis asks Lila ‘what’s a nocturnal animal?’ She replies, ‘an animal that knocks?’ 😂 Love it. Liz knows of course, and wins. Jess is furious, but they go home, work it out and Liz shares her candy 🤷🏼‍♀️ Turns out Liz needs her own assistant with assisting because of her broken arm and chooses Jess. They also get revenge on Lila with a fake spider on her lunch 🙊
My rating - 5/10 - although Jess’s petty anger at Liz was dumb (but in character), I loved the cover, and Mrs Otis’s clever contest! Oh and someone coloured in the pictures, never seen that before!

This one was a bit frustrating for me, because it included smug!Elizabeth, who is my second least favourite Elizabeth, after self-righteous emo Elizabeth. I also thought that the issues between the twins were caused almost entirely by the adults in their life, as everyone knows you don't just neglect one kid in order to spoil the other.

I barely remember this one, but doesn't Elizabeth fall off the monkey bars or jungle gym (or some other piece of playground equipment)?
