My star rating:

Plot: 4/5
Pacing: 4/5
Characters: 3.5/5
World: 4/5
Romance: 2/5

Enjoyment level: 3/5 stars

I love the premise of this series - individually I also loved the characters (mostly). I just didn't like what the author did with Larena. She is supposed to be a kick-ass warrior - but came across as an insecure mess most of the time.

As for the romance.... well it was too much insta-everything. Insta-love, insta-lust, insta-angst.... just mostly pissed me off as the rest of the storyline was brilliant. The romance (I hesitate to even use the word) was completely under-developed and every single thing happened far too quickly. There was also too much chopping and changing around of feelings - eg. one minute Fallon would completely understand her not telling him the big "secret" and then the very next page he would be pissed and not sure if he could get over it! The "secret" was also completely under-utilised.

I have every single one of this series and both of the other spin-offs. I can only hope they get better.

3 1/2 maybe 4 Stars!

This one was good too. The romance side was lacking for me though. A little too instant, but also too much non communication. Plus Fallen's self esteem was low at times... annoying. But the world building continues to be good and I'm interested in all the warriors. Especially Quinn and Broc. On to the next book soon. Happy reading!

I love Fallon. He's been struggling to deal with the God inside him for centuries. Wine had kept it at bay most of that time but he's woke from his drunkenness with the end of the last book and the capture of his brother. Now he feels the guilt for all he should have been doing the 300 years instead of hiding in a bottle. He's clearly a Highlander and a male to the last degree. The kings castle is no place for this man of action. The politics of those that he finds there grate on him. Larena, on the other hand, has his complete attention.

This story has us at the kings castle for a lot of the book. And it introduces us to the only female warrior. Larena has the ability to disappear. It has her fighting in the raw. I was happy to have a female warrior. She's been trying to find the McLeod's for a while. It's beyond lucky that she found him at the kings castle, but he won't even hear her out. She's going to have to work hard to get his attention.

I enjoyed both of these characters and the introduction of Larena's cousin, Malcolm. I'm happy that he gets a book later on, though I feel he has a hard road ahead of him. There is a growing group of characters that all intrigue me. I do wonder a lot about the future of all of them. I know how things end up because I've read the spin-off series, Dark Kings. I just can't quite mesh the two yet. So, of course, I will read on.

I did wonder about why Fallon went to the kings castle instead of after his captured brother. The book did address it but I didn't buy the reasons. Fallon is too much a Highlander and dealing with guilt at this point. I just couldn't see him running to get his castle returned to him before he rescued his brother.

Having read this authors later books, I can see that she's improved in her style and ability. I did enjoy the story but I also saw the flaws.

Excited for more. Quinn's book is next and I wonder how that's going to go with him captured by Deirdre.

Loving these historical Highlanders that capture my heart as they battle the evil. Good stuff.

I thought I loved the first book in this series, but this one is definitely my favorite. I think Fallon has to be my favorite warrior! From page one until the end there is always something happening and just keeps you glued to the book. Full of action, love, Romance, mystery and more!I love that in this book Donna gave us a woman full of power and just as strong as the male warriors. Everything just went together and was very easy to envision. Donna Grant's Dark Sword series is slowly climbing to my top three. Love it!

Why I read: Received for review from publisher.

Fallon MacLeod is a Warrior, forced to accept a God into himself. He is immortal, having been alive 300 years and within him and his two brothers rests the god of revenge. Deirdre, a drough, a druid that has given herself to black magic captured Fallon and his brothers Lucan and Quinn all those years ago. But now Deirdre has Quinn in her grasp again, hidden away in her fortress and Fallon is desperate to get him back.

Fallon’s family has lost all their land, but he wants to ensure they get to keep their castle forever. He has opened the castle as a sanctuary to Warriors and druids, so they don’t suffer at the hands of Deirdre. He arrives in Edinburgh to meet with the king to discuss these matters, and it is here he meets Larena Monroe. One glance and his lust goes into full gear. Ironically, Larena is at the castle for information about him. Larena is a female Warrior, maybe the only one of her kind, and she needs Fallon’s help.

Fallon hears a rumor there is a scroll that contains all the names of every person that has been inhabited by a god. He knows Deirdre would do anything for this list – possibly trading his brother Quinn for it. When Larena learns that Fallon wants that scroll, she has a secret that changes everything.

Forbidden Highlander quickly turned into a frustrating read for me. The foundation of my frustrations lay at the attraction, and subsequent relationship of Fallon and Larena. It is lust/love at first sight for them, which is fine. I don’t love that scenario, for as much as sexual tension gives me heart burn, these relationships need a certain degree of it. They went straight to bed the first night. But what REALLY got under my skin is the familiarity they have with each other less than 24 hours together. For example, after only knowing each other a few hours:

She wanted months, nay years, with him.
”You are a good man, Fallon McLeod.” She tilted her head to look at him. She didn’t know any other Warrior who would go against Deirdre in such a manner.

She doesn’t even KNOW him!! Another example:

Not even his admission of having been a drunk had any effect on her wanting him. He was trying to change from what he had been, and who was she to judge him after everything he had been through. She had known by being around him that he no longer drank. The reason he had started she could understand, and she was happy to hear that he stopped.

Again, she has known him one day. She knows he no longer drinks for one day? That doesn’t even make sense. How can she judge or even form an opinion from someone who she really doesn’t know?
As Larena is unconscious after an attack, the druid asks Fallon is he knows what the ring she wears is. His response:

“I know she never takes it off. It goes everywhere with her.”

No he doesn’t know this. Unless I missed something, how does he know this ring is important to her or that she always has it on?

I will say, in the beginning of chapter 14, Fallon admits to himself:

She should have known him better.
We were only together a few hours.
Fallon sighed. It seemed as if he had known Larena for centuries, not hours.

Although he makes this admission, it does not make up for the conversations in the beginning of the book.

Larena also must deal with her secret, that she actually has the scroll hidden on the ring on her finger. They love each other from the start, but Larena is scared if Fallon knows she has the scroll, he will first take it and give to Deirdre and then be upset that she withheld that information from him. Even this didn’t add tension to the story because eventually Larena just gives in. She breaks the vow she gave to never tell of the scroll, even to her husband. Deirdre, the villain couldn’t decide if she was evil or if her minions should do all the dirty work. Plus, she orally rapes Quinn and I really don’t think that added anything to her storyline. Nothing worked for me in this book.

Fallon MacLeod and his brothers are the last of the MacLeod clan. The MacLeod clan was destroyed by Deirdre. She wants the brothers for herself. She once had them long ago. The MacLeod men are cursed with strong Gods entrapped inside each of them.

Fallon feeling horrible that he didn’t do more for his clan decides to travel to see King James to ask for his help.

Larena Monroe has been searching for the MacLeods for a long time. When she learns that Fallon is near, she seeks him out. She needs his protection but can she get him to listen to her?

Forbidden Highlander is book two in the Dark Sword series. I enjoyed Dangerous Highlander but Forbidden Highlander blew me away. I couldn’t get enough of Fallon and Larena. Fallon and Larena sizzled and smoked together. I like that Larena was an equal to Fallon. This book is darker and edgier then the first one. If you like historical novels with hot, sexy warriors and strong heroines then you have to check out this series. The only thing forbidden about Forbidden Highlander is if you don’t pick up a copy of this book today!

This series is like Lay's Potato Chips; when you have the bag you just eat it all. I LOVED this book. I could barely put it down. I completely and wholeheartedly devoured this book. I thought that the story line was absolutely fluid and kept pace with the 1st book. One thing that I will point out about the book that I had a slight problem with, was the immediate connection between Larena & Fallon. I thought that they were thrown together a little to quickly. Now, with me having said that I can understand why the yearning was so strong for him being that he had just spent the last 300 years alone with his brothers and drunk; and his younger brother has a wife. So because of those circumstances I will let that one slide. I do like a romance to develop a little bit more, but I know for the sake of the story things have to get moving. The action is very gripping in the novel. Most times, I am not a fan of reading actions scenes in books but, Donna really does a great job of crafting the imagery. I am so excited to read the next book in the series. Real great Highlander series.

After going through my very first disappointment with Donna Grant's Dark Sword series (see rant/review on Dangerous Highlander) I bravely decided to continue and give another shot at it, praying for the best. I was a hopeless fool it seems.

Fallon MacLeod was to become the next laird of his clan, when the god inside him was unleashed. After the extinction of his people and going through hell, he kept himself detouched and in line by drinking. Failing his newly formed family is not an option for him though. After three hundred years he decided to be the man he was supposed to be and fight for his own beliefs. That is until Larena Monroe comes along. A woman of many secrets, who warms up his soul... and body.

Fallon - remember that drunkard of a brother, who couldn't get a grip endangering everyone, including Cara? - decides to "man up", or so Mrs. Grant thinks. Apparently leaving the castle and making a trip to Edinburg for a day or two without drinking makes him da man. Yeah... because all great, macho men leave their home, quit drinking and *poof* they're admirable and agreeable MEN! Duh! How could you not know?! And gosh - God forbid - don't let me skip the part where our macho fella forms a deep bond - wicked, wild, bunny sex, sex, sex - with a highly estimated lady, who of course is on the receiving end of tons of love, respect and lustful thoughts & gazes. It all happens in a matter of hours, love, sex, trusting issues, both turning special (a.k.a. warriors) on each other and... bodily fluids exchange - spit, seed, blood. *rolls eyes... hard*

I felt as if no one spared me on this book. It was boring, so much worse than the first - at least that one was a freaking first, held some sort of surprise element - and downright sappy. Fallon and Larena fighting, misreading each other and then making goo-goo eyes was damn creepy and annoying. It could've been hilarious, but since the author wrote the book in such a clichéd way, I got no choice but to object to it.

Fallon was the usual disappointment despite the obvious changes in and on him. Larena on the other hand started off miraculously well, being an untrusting female warrior, keeper of the Scross and slightly callous, but ended up being rediculously naive, childish and gooey, when it came to Fallon. The dialogues left me appalled with the inconsistencies and totally uninteresting content.

At this point, I assume there's no salvation to the series. The basics are fun, but the portrayal of the storyline and the final outcome lacks in many ways. Once more the poor vocabulary and lovey dovy scenes made me wanna hit something, not for lack of smoochies, but for lack of creativity and real passion. I'm shocked to see that people comment saying that they couldn't put the book aside and kept reading.

are you kidding me

It was my favourite part while going through this highlander romance nightmare of a book!

This is the second book in the Dark Sword series and is a part of the greater Dark World. Donna Grant does create a wonderful world, with many fantastical creatures. So, if you find this book compelling and entertaining, the world does continue and evolve. This series was read as a part of the Audible Escape package.

This is the story of Fallon and Larena. He is the eldest MacLeod brother and has the gift of teleporting. She is the only female warrior and has the gift of invisibility. Fallon is looking for something that Lorena has, an item she is sworn to protect. As with all secrets, they come out and the duo have to overcome trust issues all while fighting the evil drough Diedre

I loved this troubled tale of Fallon and Larena! So sad that Malcolm had the run in he had and I am a bit weary of Broc... I hope he isn't really on Dierdre's side and is only spying....
I enjoyed watching Fallon allow himself to become the leader he was meant to be... The love scenes in this were so mmmm delicious and then to find out Malcolm is a warrior too!!??? talk about jaw dropping, I almost dropped my kindle when I read that!! as always, you have not disappointed me Donna.... You keep writing, I will keep reading!!

First off for me I LOVED the characters and the story line in this book. Donna did a fabulous job at this but at times it felt like Donna veered off of the path of the story with too many thoughts. I found myself skimming through to get to the interesting parts. This book could have easily been a 5 star book for me if it would have kept my attention all the way through. Like I said the characters and story line in this series are fabulous and I do want and will continue with this series because of that.

Another great one! Fallon and Larena work well together. They are both strong, and Larena is the first Female warrior we come accross I am hoping there are more like that. Deidra is making problems again and keeping them all on their toes but there is a kink in her plan I just hope he doesn't get caught. I am of course excited for the next one since it will be about Quinn and we have to know how he escapes or is rescued. I am also curious about Malcom and to see how his story plays out.

The plot continues well throughout the second book without becoming repetitive. Warriors are added to the ranks as the war continues. Battle scenes are well written and the emotions of the characters are believable.

Book one, Dangerous Highlander, was $2.99 but the rest of the books are not. So I had do the paperback on sale with a coupon thing to keep going with these intriguing brothers. This book is about the eldest brother Fallon. He was the drunk of the family in book one. He drank to keep his god leashed because he feared he couldn't control it. He grew a set in the first book so we find him much better off at the beginning of this one. He still has some issues but he's not living in a bottle any longer.

Fallon decided to step up and take care of his family and new friends. He needs to have the king restore ownership of their castle to his family. Of course no one knew they were immortal and hiding in their castle for 300 years. He goes to see the king and meets a mysterious woman named Larena. She's beautiful and he's handsome so 'instant love'. I liked her character and back-story right away. Larena has a few secrets that she needs Fallon to help her protect from the evil Druid Deidre. Yeah, Deidre is back and once again doing wicked things in her attempt for world domination.

I liked this book better than the first because now we are meeting some of the other demon possessed warriors and learning of their stories. We get a better idea of what Deidre is really up to. She is much more depraved than was revealed in the first book. She's still an a-typical villian but I like her survival techniques. Fallon and Larena survive everything that is thrown at them and find their HEA. So now, we have two brothers with HEAs and a plot that keeps getting better. Oh yeah, some kilts are starting to show up but I don't think the brogue is going to improve.

If you like a good paranormal love story, these books are quite satisfying. If you are hardcore on your Highlander lore and brogue, you won't be happy with the brogue. It's not a deal breaker for me with this series because it's well done in every other respect.

FORBIDDEN HIGHLANDER by Donna Grant is a spellbinding historical romance set in 1603 Edinburgh, Scotland. It is the second in A Dark Sword Novel, but can easily be read as a stand alone. Some of the characters from the first book Dangerous Highlander reappear in this one also.It has danger, romance, sensuality, secrets, passion, demons, druids, an extremely evil witch who is after more power, dark magic, find their destinies, true love and a battle to overcome an ancient curse. The hero, Fallon is the eldest of the MacLeod brothers( Fallon, Lucan, and Quinn). We meet Lucan in Dangerous Highlander. Fallon is strong, handsome, is immortal due to his demon, drank to much to try to keep his demon at bay,
is battling guilt from not being able to save his family, and falls for the beautiful Larena. The heroine, Larena,is beautiful, has a dark secret, fears for her life, needs the MacLeod clan to help her. For Larena is also has a demon, a female demon one of few, if not the only one known. She holds the secret to how to vanquish the evil druid who wishes to wreak havoc on earth and mankind.Sparks fly between Fallon and Larena for she is able to open his heart and his soul. The story is about Fallon and Larena and their quest to find true love. I would highly recommend this book especially if you enjoy romance, passion, dark, sensual and enchanting reading. It is fast paced page turning and will keep you on the edge of yours seat. I am waiting for the next installment to learn about the younger brother Quinn, who has been captured by the evil witch and the MacLeods out to free and destroy the evil witch. This book was received for review and details can be found at St. Martins Paperbacks and My Book Addiction and More.

I truly loved this one and many of the elements of the story had me captivated. I have recently fell in love with Grant's historical paranormal series, and this series is so unique and different and not what you expect, in fact I might lean toward a bit more fantasy. In Forbidden Highlander we have three brothers, who are immortal, and each of them have a beast inside of them, with godlike gifts. Fallon's brother has been taking hostage by their nemesis and he is desperate to find a way to free him, the key one woman...Larena Monroe. Larena is in hiding, from their mutual enemy and seeks refuge from being on the run every day of her life. What she doesn't expect to find is her future mate, a man to love and stand by her side. This story pretty much starts off after the first book left off, and I would highly recommend you read this series in order. the first book really sets the tone for the series, and even though Grant explains the background information, I feel you really need the first book to understand more fully what is happening in this story. i really liked the various qualities that made this story a true gem. Donna Grants has such a compelling storytelling ability, and draws you into the story in ways you don't expect. There is no dull moment in this book, and I was pretty much at the edge from beginning to end. What I truly loved was seeing the brothers and the complexity of the plot that works its way into the story, we see some very intense moments and boy did I just love this one almost as much as the first book. What a wild ride of adventure, dangerous villains, plenty of steamy action and sword fighting, and a powerful romance to steal your heart.

Forbidden Highlander is book two in the Dark Sword series.
I enjoyed to book and I am glad the plot moved forward.

The MacLeod brothers are the last of his clan, Immortals and Warriors hosting the same god. Their castle and family were destroyed by Deirdre a dark Druid. With Cara's arrival, other Warriors - Hayden, Galen, Logan, Ramsey - and a Druid - Sonia - have joined the brothers and Fallon must go and try and take back his castle from the King.
His journey to the court leads him to the only female Warrior - Larena.
Larena was alone most of her life after being exiled by her clan. The only companion in her life was Malcolm, her cousin.
Her need to join the fight and the Macleod brothers takes her to Fallon's chamer.

Fallon and Larena had great chemistry from beginning. After Lucan and Cara it feels like they are fated pairs considering their insta-attraction-lust.

The story starts off were the first book left off, Quinn is in Deirdre's mountain, prisoner and learning to control his God.
There are more details given into Deirdre's past and what made her evil.
A little is explained to why she wants to MacLeod brothers and why in particular Quinn.

More is added to the story: prophecies, scrolls and ancient magic.
I like the fact that every character has a voice and personality that can be clear in the story. The multiple POV's add to the story's appeal.

I am looking forward to Quinn story now.

Another great story by Donna Grant. Loving the Dark Swords series. Fallon’s story was as good as Logan’s. So much happens in this one.

Fallon, who up until now is broken or at least thinks he is, drowns himself in wine to drown out his god. Fear does that to him. Meeting Larena, Fallon learns to turn that fear into courage, because he learns to care and love Larena. She’s a fierce female Warrior, who’s fear spurs Fallon’s protectiveness and forces him to face his own fears to protect her. Larena, although weary of everyone, learns to put her trust in the one man who loves her enough to unleash and control his god so that he can become the man and Warrior he was born to be. Larena is such a strong character, and a perfect match for Fallon.

This was such a spectacular story. I enjoyed it as much as the first one. Loving the MacLeods. In this one some more Warriors and Druids are introduced, so we are really seeing the affects of what Deidre has been doing. What I love about these books is that each Warrior or Druid coming to the MacLeod Castle, play a pivitol part of the story and the MacLeod family. Each are welcome and each learn to care for the others and are willing to fight against Deidre.

So much action, romance and magic in this story. It was fast paced and hard to put down.

LOVED this one! Fallon is every kind of awesome and so far my favorite of the brothers! Larena was pretty fiercely spectacular too. A female warrior? Who knew!

It was great to watch Fallon finally embrace his role as a leader and take charge and be the head of his clan as he was always meant to be. Watching him leave the castle and venture out into the world for the first time in centuries was very touching. He meets Larena during the course of this and their attraction is immediate and undeniable. I love it! I absolutely LOVE the way they come together and make things work with each other.

We also meet a whole host of new Warriors during this one. And I love them all and I hope each of them gets his own story. Especially Galen even though we met him in Lucan's book. Logan would be fascinating as well.

I would love to see more of Fallon and Larena in the future of these books. They are so good for each other and to each other. Even more so than Lucan and Cara I think.

Great second installment in this very catching series.

Loving this series so much! In fact read this book in one day.. maybe cos i have the latest in death on my kindle to read, but i so want to know what happens next in this series that im going to read all 5 books first if it hold my interest!

I always thought I wouldnt enjoy anything paranormal wise. Okay its not out there, but of a more mystical time. Druids, Mie and Warriors..and off course Highlanders!

Love how the characters are growing and more being introduced slowly so dont get too mixed up on who is who.. though a wee bit confusing having two warriors named Logan and Lucan! I hope we get more of a back story on Logan, even though not been much about him yet, he appeals to me.

Anyway book 2 was Fallons and Larena's story. It does make me laugh how they fall in to bed within hours of meeting, nothing like building up some sexual tension is there lol

But i did enjoy the book, especially when Larena kneed a wrryan (?sp) where the sun dont shine lol! made me smile that did!

Onto Book 3!

OMG I loved this!!!!

Highlanders and Demons OH MY!!!

I loved that this one has a female demon and she is KICK ASS!!!!!!!

Fallon is the oldest MacLeod Brother and hes and Alcoholic HILARIOUS, the reasons behind his alcoholism is answered perfectly and dealt with respectfully.

Donna Grant has an amazing talet in drawing the reader in from the first chapter, she creates and interesting background and plot, her stories are consitent and fast paced, her charaters are priceless no two are alike not even the twins who cameo in the next book.

The entire emotional wheel is used Laughter, Crying, Grief and Happiness.
I found myselt laughing out loud a number of times and clapping my hands at the banter.

A wonderful story and very much looking forward to the next installment.

I didn't like this one as much as the first but I still loved the on-going plot. I really liked Fallon but I had problems with Larena's wishy-washiness. One minute she's all over him and the next she's sneaking out of his bed. I like that there is a traitor in Deidre's camp who is surreptitiously slipping the MacLeod's intel. Deidre is one evil bitch and I sure hope the MacLeod brothers kick her ass but good!

Poor Quinn, I can't wait for his book. I am wondering which druid is his HEA. Hmmm

I really enjoyed Fallon's story, I'm a little upset that Quinn is still being held by the evil Deirdre... Thank God that book's been written already so I jump into it next! :)

Things are really starting to heat up, I'm really looking forward to the rescue mision. The build up in this one was intense. I'm glad they are working to make a plan and not just storming the mountain. In the first book I was intrigued by Galen, this time it's Broc that has me wondering :)

While I really enjoyed this story, I liked the connection between the H/h better in the first book. In this second novel, we follow Fallon while he tries to reestablish his role as leader within his family. After 300 years of drinking away his misery and hiding from the God within him, Fallon is forced to accept what he has become and start to care and look out for others.

I like the series but there is something lacking . It doesn't hold my attention. I hate the way it just stops at the end of the book. It is not really a cliffhanger, but the story is unfinished. It is unlike any story I have read that is a series. Maybe it would be better to have it all be in one book.

Romantic scenes, I found myself skipping over them.
