deValera's American birth saved him from execution at Easter 1916. He opposed the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1922 and was defeated in the Civil War by WT Cosgrave, the successor of the assassinated Michael Collins. He later founded Fianna Fail in 1926 and took power peacefully after the election of 1932. He retained it for 16 successive years. He held to neutrality during the 2nd World War to the chagrin of Churchill & Roosevelt. He sympathised with the Germans on the death of Hitler. He was a devout Catholic who had tried to becomea priest. He had a vision of Jesus Christ in 1928. He served two terms as President.
