HOW IT ALL BEGAN
I started writing my first romance novel in secret. I was working a temp job in an insurance office in Manhattan at the time, and the office manager had made it clear that even if there was nothing to do, I still had to look busy-- never one of my big talents. I felt bad about the wasted time, though, and I needed something to round out my other chosen career, which was singing. Yeah, that's right. Most artists choose a more practical Plan B to back up their improbable Plan A. Me? No way. "Long Shot" is my middle name.
So I sneakily set up a Document 1 and a Document 2 with a spreadsheet on it. If my Boss du Jour walked by I could quick-like-a-bunny switch screens, and whenever the coast was clear, I went back to my story. Not that I was slacking, mind you. If there was work to be done, I did it. The sneakiness felt familiar, though, because I've been teased about reading romances since I was a kid. I think the day I finally grew up was the day I stopped trying to cover up what I was reading on the bus, train or subway. Let people think whatever they like.
It wasn't until I moved to Italy (details of that Long Shot provided later on) that I got serious about writing, though. I found myself with many long, quiet days alone with nothing to do, so I slogged my way bravely to the end of the manuscript and sent it out. Everybody rejected it-except for Kensington. I wrote for them for a few years, and then made a bid for an erotic novella for the new Brava imprint, and oh joy, they accepted it. Then I wrote BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. And so on, and so forth.
That's how I started. I can't think of anything I'd rather do. I never knew it would be so scary, and so hard . . . all that solitude and silence, a blank computer screen, and no one to blame. But still. It's worth it. It's great.
I tried, yet could appreciate much of this series. Each book in the series is just a rewrite with a different lead. They don’t want love, they obsess over the person they don’t want, then they struggle to keep them alive against evil. In the end they don’t believe they are loved, are separated from weeks for some ridiculous reason, then struggle to break through that ludicrous reason. The love scenes lean more toward sexual assault than affection or love. Very disappointed.
I read all of the McCloud Brothers books and loved them. Some were more favourites than others but all in all - they all had great action stories with a steamy romance. I love the way these books are all tied together but can also stand alone. It's best to read them in order (although I started with one of the middle books) because the stories have more significance that way. I recommend these books for a fun thriller ride.
DNF, I simply could not make it past the first half of the first book. Just completely unbelievable and lacking a true plot or realistic characters. And the lead female is supposed to be intelligent and driven and instead she’s a bumbling, simpering, stupid mess always waiting for someone to save her or not realize the clear mistakes she made.
Filled with suspense, murder, crazy mad scientist experiment and some hot loving. This series is definitely worth reading. Not for the prudish as well. The only negative I can say is the level of abuse the women went through and that “no” didn’t seem to mean much. But all in all very good stories and all with happy endings.
Oh boy, what a collection, it has it all, pain, anguish, torture, evil mean people, strong men and stronger women, love, passion, hot, hot love scenes, good versus evil, good always winning, you need to read the whole collection to follow the plot, I need to keep reading the rest of the books to see how the plot thickens and how it finished, enjoy
This is by far the most prolific and engaging books I have read in last five year, hands down. All the characters and stories are so well-developed. I fell in love with the McClouds and their friends by the time I finished reading Connor and Erin's story. I loved the way Raine's character was shaped in the first book.
Connor and Erin's love story was a Saga in itself.
Davy and Margot's story is equally suspenseful and exciting.
The most moving story I found was Sean's and Liv's. Their reunion and the way Liv's family controls her life.
Nick and Becca are caught into an tumultuous situation (to put it lightly), and the only thing I could totally get was when Becca says- 'Squinting fiercely' to get work done in the kitchen. I am a myopic and squinting is a habit of every myopic.
The way Val is described- I think it is enough for the ladies to wonder if he actually looks like a GQ model. And Tamara- I feel I do not know enough English or enough words to describe Tamara. Even if I had the capacity to describe her, I am sure I would fail miserably. It was exciting to finally learn of her story, where she comes from and how she ends up with Lazar, Kurt Novak and into the nails of Daddy Novak, and finally with Val.
I hate to admit, but I do not know the titles of the individual books, but I know the names of protagonists and the bad guys in each book by heart!
I finished reading the books last year, 2018,but I missed my McCloud family so much, that I decided to come back to the books one more time in 2019. And I must say- it was equally exciting to give it a second reading.
Honestly, I would never be ready to part with McCloud's ever, though Shannon has made clear that the last book with Sveti and Sam is the end of the series. But the bond and closeness to the characters is unparalleled.
