Of all the Chicken Soup books I've read, I felt this was somewhat underwhelming given the audience it is meant to inspire. Although I am not a cancer survivor, my mother fought the battle for 21 months before the disease inevitably took her from us and my aunt is a 5+ year survivor of breast cancer, so I've been a first-hand witness to the strength needed when you are feeling most scared and weak. In truth, I feel there needs to be a 2nd/newer edition of this book, as the stories in it are dated, and not necessarily dated in that things have changed since the book was written but dated in that a lot of the survivor stories are from people who fought cancer 10, 15, 20, even 30 years before it was written. Not that this should be a deal-breaker to keep someone from reading it, but I didn't feel the connection to the situations I've witnessed, so I wonder if readers seeking strength from hearing of others who have been in their shoes would feel the same disconnect. Also, some of the authors had multiple stories in the book, so certain anecdotes, quotes, and situations are repeated. This is one of the earliest books in the series, before the internet was a primary form of communication and education, so a newer book could provide connections to resources and support groups available online as opposed to by mail as this book indicates. Also, the stories would be more timely and reflect the changes in treatments, both medical and alternative, and perspectives that have occurred in the last couple decades. I have not researched if such a book exists, as this one was given to my mom during her battle and I recently found it in her library, but the format of Chicken Soup books lends itself well to reading a story or two during chemo or at times when a person may be tired or have difficulty focusing but is also seeking inspiration and a reason to keep going. I hope it does for all cancer patients out there, but if it does not, this is a reasonable read full of messages that I imagine ring true always.
This book of stories of those of us who have survived cancer (I qualify twice) offers tons of encouragement to those currently fighting the battle. But it's also encouraging reading for anyone fighting any life-threatening disease.
It's a good rebuttal to those readers who think Jesus is no longer working in our lives today as the Great Physician. The stories and poems are of varied lengths, so the reader can easily find a stopping place if he must put the book down.
My wife had breast cancer in 1996. I had prostrate cancer twelve years later. And yet here we both are twenty-eight years later; only God knows why we have survived this and other life threatening health issues while others we have known have not. I read the stories of all these survivors with increased appreciations. If you have survived cancer, you will appreciate them too.
I love the Chicken Soup books. This one hit especially close to home as a survivor and because cancer has affected my family and my friends. Although several (most) of the stories made me cry, this collection also gave me hope and inspiration. An excellent collection of stories, for sure. Just make sure you have plenty of tissues nearby!
I liked some entries better than others, but the whole feeling was very uplifting. A good book for those fighting cancer and for those who know others fighting cancer.
my coworker gave me this book as she had survived breast cancer she was 10 years cancer free and was diagnosed in February 2008 and passed away on halloween 10-31-08 I havent experienced cancer but their are good story of courage and inspiration. she was my best bud at work and I will miss her gratly. as she gave me advice and guidance
