The Mermaid's Knight
When a car accident takes Leah Sunderland's life, she finds herself in dire need of divine assistance. Her fairy godmother comes to the rescue, but her help comes with conditions. So her fairy godmother takes her voice so she can't tell anyone she's from the future, which leaves her unable to scream or cry out in pain when she's wounded but still able to giggle, moan, and whimper in pleasure? It bothered me how MANY sounds she was able to make caused by pleasure, when it's made such a big deal of that people maybe believe she's actually mute because she doesn't even make a sound when she's seriously wounded. If you can moan in pleasure, I'm betting cash money you can moan in pain. it's just the type of inconsistency that bugs me. There are several more like this throughout the book, like her deal with her fairy godmother seems to be one thing but then suddenly if she succeeds at her goal it's a totally different thing? Um, did I miss something? I couldn't bring myself to care enough to go back and reread the deal-making scene to verify. Also things like what she stitches into her embroidery and picks out isn't what is later seen (it has the same meaning but is different, which as detailed as I can get without spoilers). They just piled up and left me with this sort of niggling annoyance that knocked a solid star or two off my rating.
Time travel romances aren't really my thing (but little mermaid retellings totally are) and I may have never read this if not for the #rippedbodicebingo challenge that requires a time travel romance. That being said, the book seemed to use time travel as an excuse to go back to the 14th century and have it be OK that the "hero" basically threatens to rape her into speaking/telling him who she is. The narrative mostly follows Leah, and the few sections where we get peeks into Royce's head just aren't enough to redeem him as a character I want anything to do with.
Still, the writing was interesting and it has some interesting plot points. It didn't make me want to throw it across the room, and really if I wasn't so nit-picky about inconsistencies this would have been a 3.5 or possibly 4 star read for me.

As usual Jill Myles still maintains her charm and provocative skills for writing passionate and fun PNR reads. Leah wakes up only to discover she's been killed in car accident after a drunk driver speeds through a red light. With the help of her eccentric fairy godmother Muffin, a devastated Leah gets a second chance at life.
She must make the possessively handsome Lord Royce FitzWarren fall in love with her in thirty days, or else she will die. It sounds like a slice of heaven, however before you all run to find your own personal fairy godmother you must know that Leah can only fulfill this goal while maintaining life as a mermaid, secretly escaping to the beach daily to regularly exercise her fins while seducing Royce as a Mute woman.
I LOVED it!! Fairy tale lovers will find themselves swept away in the fantasy of Leah on her thirty day journey to discover if she completes her task given to her by her fairy godmother, therefore granting her a second chance at life.
The Mermaid's Knight is brilliantly executed by Jill Myles and has me dreaming of my own adult fairy tale ending, and I'll never look at Disney's The Little Mermaid the same way again.
This story has it all, fighting, danger, passion, deception, really HOT sex, and an adult fairy tale.
If you haven't read Jill Myles Succubus Diaries I highly recommend you reading those as well because she manages to write scorchingly erotic love scenes, while carrying that same passion into her characters that I just can't get enough of. They're awesome, fun and sexy!

Killed when she shouldn't have been, Leah's not very good fairy godmother gives her a second chance at living, the only catch she's now part of a fairy-tale and needs to get a very suspicious Baron to fall in love with her within a month or she looses her chance at living again.
There are moments when the Baron is more than a little arrogant and I wasn't keen on him threatening to give Leah
Wish this had more depth to it and the story was teased out a bit more, nevertheless it's an enjoyable quick read/re-read.

It isn't uncommon for the premise of books such as The Mermaid's Knight to be thought of as "Cliche", "Childish", and "Totally not worth the time". Well, ok I have to admit that: Cliche? Yes. Childish? A liiiittle bit. Totally not worth the time? Utter bullshit. Cause this book had my completely under its thrall throughout the reading process. It was, and is, THAT good. Hence, I was shellshocked.
Just a brief summary before I continue with my shellshocked ramblings - Leah died. It was a rather wronged way to go - drunk driver crashed into her, she died, he didn't. So while she was floating in the alternate dimension, her fairy godmother appeared.
Muffin is a plump, jovial woman. A little eccentric, but still possesses a genial disposition. She admitted that the accident was all her fault for not paying enough attention, and so grants her a second chance at life. Catch is (there will always be a catch. NO FREE LUNCH IN THIS WORLD!): She has to make a guy in another time and place fall in love with her - Fairytale-style.
So Muffin decides that Leah would take after Ariel in The Little Mermaid. Leah will be turned into a mermaid, and while she's on land as a human, she won't be able to talk. What's worse is that her intended target, one Lord Royce Northcliffe, is a weather-bitten, war-hardened warrior who doesn't indulge in things such as love. So how, oh how, will poor, mute-when-human Leah seduce old Royce's granite heart?
Well, I'm still reeling from the shock of having fallen in love with this book.. For one, I'm not big on the whole happy-gayness novels with an easy plot which I can breeze thru in no time. Nuh uh, no can do. But the thing is, this book, tho cliche in general, do have the elements of surprise that kept my eyeballs freaking glued to its pages. I assumed that this book would be very predictable, but Myles just kept the surprises rolling in, and I really liked that a lot.
Leah and Royce together, were just simply adorable. The suspicious nature of our dear warrior definitely did hinder their relationaship from progressing much, but well, it did liven up the atmosphere sometimes. For example when Leah was first found naked on shore (and subsequent times too), Royce was totally unamused to find, at that time he assumed to be, his enemy's leman or wench, or simpy, his prostitute, on his shore. So he immediately thought her a spy and was all macho-man, "What the hell are you doing here, girl?" Ok, not direct quote, but you get the point. And she fainted. LOL. So he threw her over his shoulder and carried her to camp. Wrapped in a cloak like a burrito.
The, um, I can't really say banters since Leah can't talk, but their exchanges are hilarious. I absolutely enjoyed them. Y'know, the fact that Myles could make it so engaging is phenomenal in itself. One party of the conversation can't freaking talk, for god's sake! But she did it. Oh, and I think she kinda made up for it by showing us what Leah was thinking in place of any verbal responses, so yep, it was still like a conversation. But whenever Royce said something Leah thought was ridiculous, Leah would stamp on his feet. It was real sweet. Haha. Albeit a little gay, but sweet all the same.
This book...is it under adult fiction or Young Adult? Um, it is childish in a YA way, but the sexuality of it is definitely adult fiction. Tho a LITTLE bit more childish than YA at the beginning (the rest was fine!), and a LITTLE bit less porny than adult fiction, so... To each his own.:)
To sum it all up, I am still shocked. Shocked that such a cliche fairytale story can be twisted and rewritten so well where all others have failed (and it wasn't because of the lack of attempts); Shocked that, well, I fell badly for such a gay story - but not the point; Shocked that the plot and storyline could be handled so well even when so much other problems were brewing in the background - made it all the more exciting that it's so eventful; Shocked that Myles could've made a mute's conversation so entertaining. List goes on. But all in all, I loved the story.
P.S. It kinda reminds me of The River of Times series because of the travelling back in time and falling for a lord of some castle, and Kathryn Lasky's Daughter of the Sea series which features women who can turn into mermaids when they come into any bodily contact with water. So, if you're a fan of either one, why not try this one?

I guess this would be one of those times where I’ve never found a quote that struck as something I wanted to remember or I was just too busy enjoying reading that I forgot I need to look for one.
I gotten this book free after signing up in a newsletter because Partner Games was uploaded per chapter on the author’s website as it was written and I just got too excited I wanted to be notified when the new chapter is up.
So one morning, feels like a fairytale, isn’t it?, I decided to read the book without of course reading what it’s about other than the fact that the heroine is supposedly a mermaid. What? The title didn’t clue you in, on that? Actually, I never thought about that, too. Boo me.
And so once upon a time, Leah was looking into her body, bloody because she forgot the seat belt, and most likely lifeless. It was a drunk driver that hit her in an accident in Seattle. And then the start of a Disney movie.
Yes, well, I was also thinking about The Siren, actually. I don’t know why. Maybe because of the task thingy? Whatever.
This is me summarizing my feelings and what I’ve been through while reading.
So you get the gist of it. In short, my heart felt that longing, those feelings of being in love, being hurt and everything that comes off in a relationship. All those were the only things that is important to me, the other stuff? I may have overlook it or I never given it a second thought, nor mind it. I enjoyed and it’s all that matters to me.

2.5 stars = okay. Not terrible, just didn't grab me - it didn't help that the heroine can't speak in this medieval set Little Mermaid inspired tale - on my first attempt I set this aside at 53%.
I did end up finishing this, mostly because I read book 2, The Beast' s Bride, and like it so much that inspired me to give this another shot. Still Mermaid's Knight never did really grab me, she fell in love too easily, and without her being able to speak there was no deeper relationship development beyond the physical. Plus there was so much frustration for the trouble she finds herself in as the story progresses and her helplessness at straightening things out since she can't speak. So this was just okay - but you know the original Little Mermaid is actually pretty depressing, so this was better than that.

Muffin needs to be arrested. I'm pretty sure stranding a person in another era of history naked, and in pain, with no way to defend herself, in the middle of a little civil war, is NOT in the fairy godmother handbook. I say this despite how much I want to slap any character from the modern era who can't be arsed to use her finger to write the word "MUTE" in the dirt to explain why she's not talking and who cant improvise an emergency beach-wrap when the occasion calls for it.
The cover looked so promising despite it's less than stellar execution & chubby knight- I'd actually hoped it would be a mermaid tale in which the fishy half would be a mammal just like the human-half (because surely that makes more sense than being half-fish?!).

I loved the story of the little mermaid, so I bought this for £3 (bargain). It was good, nothing to fawn over or read over and over, but good enough to spend a Sunday morning reading with a cup of tea.
The writing was lackluster ... I'm not dying to absorb more of Miss Myles wordplay, I've forgotten most of it already, but the characters were engaging as I read. It seemed a bit long for what it was, lots of padding here and there that I had to force myself not to flick through. Without a doubt what I enjoyed most was the intensity between Leah and Bryce (leading couple). Very good, though Leah herself was a bit of a whimp at times. For example, she's a mute and cannot communicate with anybody. Okay, tough break, but not the end of the world. Pen meet paper. No paper? Find some other freaking way. Hell, scratch words into the castle walls with a rock if you need to. I just didn't get that she was well educated and too dense to figure out how to pass for a lady rather than be used as a leman.
The fairy godmother was odd. I kept thinking of Jackie Stalone with magical powers whenever she popped up, not a great combination.
Um ... not much else to say, it was just OK. Oh yeah, I do have more to say! My god, that cover. Ick. I've seen better slabs of fish at the local fishmongers than the representation of what should be a beautiful mermaid. Not pretty *shudders* What is that? Mermaids have lovely shimmering scales ... don't they? That tail looks suspiciously dolphin-like. I take against ugly covers, there is just no need for it I tell you.

Uhm no.. this book isn't for me. It had an interesting synopsis but somehow Leah just irritated the heck out of me. Like seriously, instead of doing a poor job at playing charades, couldn't she have found a stick or something and written everything she wanted to say on the ground? Oh well...

To tell the truth I kinda expected more. Not to say I'm not happy now either. I am. This story is good enough that my feminist panties weren't in much of a twist at least. Hey, it's the middle ages and the whole "me Tarzan, you Jane" wasn't my favourite part of the book but it was readable and gave credence to the story so I wasn't terribly upset. And I did get to read about some hot warrior full of muscles and scars who somehow managed to be a softie for our heroine. *sigh* Okay. So it wasn't enough to erase the parts I didn't care for, Leah was kind of a Mary Sue and I spent most of the book hoping she'd grow a backbone. It wasn't perfect. But I read it in one sitting and don't regret a single second. It was funny, dramatic, romantic and enjoyable. I had a great time and, right this moment, I'm only sorry it wasn't longer. I wanted to know a little more about them afterwards. She did give up everything for him. The least I deserved was to know the prize.

The mermaid's knight is one of my repeated re-read's. The once upon a time travel stories that Jill creates has always been favorites of mine. The mermaid's knight is a twist on the little mermaid. After Leah dies in an unfortunate accident, her godmother Muffin comes to rescue her, but with a task that Leah must complete if she desires a second chance at life.

I was looking for a good read similar to the goddess summoning series by P.C. Cast and finally came across this series. I throughly enjoyed this read. This is the start of what looks to be a good series. This book gives us the story of the Little mermaid with a little twist. The mermaid in this story is a modern day woman that after her sudden death is sent back for a second chance. I love this story a great deal and have already started book 2.

I started following Jill Myles GoodReads reviews a long while ago and always thought they were well thought out or witty.
This is my first book by said author and I actually liked it quite a bit. It’s not a deep thinker, but it is a decent bit of puff. The ending felt rushed but I’m not put off and will be trying the next in the series.

Overall, I liked it. I would have liked the plot to be from a lesser known fairy tale, though. I had a really hard time liking the hero at first; however, he grew on me. If I thought about the time frame, then his attitude was less offensive to me. One thing that really bothered me was how the heroine gave in to him so easily. I would have made him work for it more.

I love this book! I love the characters, the plot, everything! I love all of the books in this series and i can't wait to read more. This one is my favourite of the series so far because its longer and had a great storyline.

Okay, I'm sorry, but this makes no sense whatsoever. So you have an average teenager who dies in a car accident, and a fairy godmother shows up and basically tells you that you've got one month to make some guy fall in love with you while you're a mute mermaid, or otherwise you die for good. Like WTF? Why? How? WHY???
Then there's the issue of Leah, supposedly American, suddenly thrown back in time to medieval Cornwall where, of course, everybody speaks exactly the same (???), and she just stumbles upon the Baron who needs to fall in love with her. So we've got a time-traveling fairy tale re-telling of the little mermaid... That's just weird. And that godmother is just a horrid creature. She basically leaves Leah naked on a beach with no voice, shows up now and then to bitch about that other girl that's competition and is annoyed when Leah gives "the goodies away for free". Seriously, the godmother and Leah were two peas in a pod, both childish teenagers with no idea about life whatsoever. Then there's your typical YA bitch who every needs to hate and Royce, the handsome, bad guy alpha male.
This book is just a very weird mixture of different attempts of fantasy and none of them word. The writing is immature and annoying, the characters are so stereotypical it's almost offensive, and the godmother feels more like a pimp... I stopped roughly half way through, this was just not my cup of tea at all.

Quick breakdown, Leah is killed in a horrific car accident in this world. But is given a second chance at life by her fairy godmother. She is taken to another time and place in the distant past.
But she has to fulfill a challenge or die and go to heaven. Her challenge is that she has to make a nobleman fall in love with her within 30 days. Oh, and she's a mermaid by night. Minor details.
There's a lot of suspension of belief. But despite a lot of contradictions of the rules, I enjoyed the story.
A few of the problems, for me were, firstly she HAD to go back to the water within every 24 hour or something terrible would happen. But what, besides terrible pain in her legs, is never addressed. Two, is that she can not speak to anyone except her FG. But I don't know if that was voluntary or struck Mute. Thirrd, and most annoying for me, was that her FG seemed to be working against her. She gave her some really bad advice on making Royce, the knight, fall for her. I was often like, Damn, who's side are you on, anyway?
Also, it was obvious most of the way through the book that Royce was in love with her despite their lack of communication and his distrust of her. I didn't know what was required of Leah to prove his love for her. And the ending wasn't as satisfying as I would have hoped.

The Mermaid's Knight is the first book in the Once Upon a Time Travel series, and can be read as a standalone book.
Leah finds herself dead because of a drunk driver hitting her car. Muffin, her fairy godmother, comes along to offer her a second chance at another life or she can go straight to heaven. Leah picks the second chance. To qualify for her second chance, Leah has to act out the part of the voiceless mermaid in the Little Mermaid fairy tale. She has a month to get the Lord of the Castle to fall in love with her.
Royce finds a fully naked Leah on the beach as he approached his keep with a band of warriors to reclaim it as his own. He assumed Leah is a spy for his enemy and likely his mistress. For a woman of no words, Leah has a lot of explaining to do. She also needs to sneak back to the salt water often to return to her mermaid form to avoid severe pain in her legs...without anyone, especially Royce, knowing.
Will she be able to accomplish her goals without losing her own heart? Will Royce learn to trust her, even without words of reassurance? Even if she succeeds, what happens next? Fun fairy tale twist quick read.

Why isn't this called 'The Mermaid's Tale"?
Aside from that, this book is full on fast food - delicious and fun but probably bad for you in giant doses. It's a bit cartoonish (isekai in novel format), but the saucy scenes are decent. There are a couple of plot holes but if you take it for what it is - not a life changing book but a fun one - then you should be good.
It follows the Hans Christian Anderson tale more than the Disney one, namely the pain of having legs and the .
The fairy godmother is a bit of a turd - but she's not in it for much.

mildly diverting
after relishing The Scarecrow king, I was intrigued to check out other books by Jill Myles.
This one was entertaining, but didn't have the sweet appeal of the other.
I thought it was enjoyable, but not memorable.
The fairy godmother subplot was ludicrous in a vexing way.
I'll try another novel from this author, before deciding... because the Scarecrow King was just that good.

Fabulous story
Jill does a wonderful job with her characters and her world building. I love her Once Upon a Time series and many of her other stories. They are great the first time you read them and only get better when you read them the second—or twenty-fifth time. I would highly recommend this story and any other written by this author.

I really enjoyed this book and became determined to read the whole series. Even though I was looking for a romance novel with a woman thrown back into ancient times, the fairytale twist this novel took had me all sorts of giddy. Talk about taking a tale known by so many and spinning it in one hell of a way.
