Jake awoke to a pollution-ridden, war-torn planet sometime in the distant future. With his own family long gone and most of Earth’s population wiped out, Jake found a new place to call home. However, just as he began to make a life for himself at Haven, a man named Mikal Glenov took it all away. Jake tried to move on, but the scars ran too deep, and he vowed to get revenge.
~ The Episode 1
In his hunt for Glenov, Jake meets some new people along the way who could prove invaluable.
Will the lone wolf stick to the fringe where he only has himself to worry about? Or will he let himself get invested in building a new home?
The Colony is Episode 1 of Variant Inoculum. It is a post-apocalyptic dystopian future fiction without the 'zombie' aspect.
In a post apocalyptic world, Jake is on a mission. He won't stop until his target has been neutralized. Dead. This short story stayed on an action-packed pace from beginning to end.
A writer to keep an eye on The Colony Variant Inoculum: Episode 1 I purchased this planning on reading it at a later date but seeing the short page count gave it a go. Very good! I honestly didn't expect much being a first book. My mistake it's nicely written with interesting characters. The first entry is just a teasing look into this world. I was disappointed there wasn't any real zombie encounters other than a mention but I'm sure that's coming in later stories. I was mostly interested in what new take on zombies this book might have. The action and dialogue are tight. Writing is crisp with none of the awkwardness sometimes found in tales taking place in future settings. Author Jackson Howl (what a great name by the way) gave me enough to want to keep reading his continuing saga. Ready for more!
Good start for a series. I went into Variant with the assumption it would be the precursor to an interesting series. I got what I expected. I'm interested to see the journey Jake takes. Who he encounters. What people he crosses paths with again. * I'll wait until the series is complete and binge the entire thing.
A quick read that glimpses a new world. Interested to see where this series goes. Would of liked the story to be a little longer so we can know more of what is going on in the world, but otherwise enjoyable.
