First off, I'm not much of a book person. I rather TV or audiobooks so I may have given a lower rating than another book lover would. Anyways, Flight Or Fight is an easy read written by Diane Haynes. The story is about a young girl named Jane Ray who is shy but passionate about what she believes in. She was doing a daily jog around Stanley park when she saw a bird struggling in the canola oil covered Burrard Inlet. She knew she had to help so she grabbed the bird out of the inlet and took it to the Urban Wildlife Rescue Centre. She was shocked to see that there were hundreds of other birds who had found their self in the same situation. She was amazed and wanted to help, she signed up to be a volunteer at the centre and when she left, right outside the front door was a flock of reporters with big cameras and microphones. They proceeded to ask Jane hundreds of questions and she was so frustrated with Seaking Shipping (the company that was allegedly responsible for the spill) that she just spoke her mind and said what needed to be said. After that her rant that was on national television went viral and obviously Seaking was not happy. The rest of the book is about how Jane helps save all the endangered and also very common species of birds that were injured in the oil spill.
It's really a quite inspiring and sweet story. There was one sentence in the book that really stuck with me and it's been stuck in my head ever since I read it, it went something like "There's a place to keep your mouth shut, but an oil spill is not it." and this book really shows you why. This book helped me with knowing that oil spills and other environmental issues we are having in the world really need to be talked about. I know that I will never keep my mouth shut about an oil spill, I hope you won't either.
When Jane Ray finds a seabird coated in canola oil in Burrard Inlet it leads into training in wildlife rescue and pursuing a company that refuses to take responsibility for the spill. The book is well-researched in wildlife rescue information and is tied together with a well-written mystery.
My book review is on one of the Wildlife Rescue Series books: Flight or Fight. I will be giving a brief summary, what I like about the book, what I dislike about the book, what I assimilated from the book, and who I would recommend the book to.
Flight or Fight is about Jane Ray, a teenage girl with a timid attitude. One day, while Jane is practicing for a marathon, she encounters a bird that was drowning in oil from a spill. After saving the animal, she comes eye to eye with national television- and Seaking Shipping, the company supposedly responsible for the oil spill. Jane, with the help of her two friends Amy MacGillivray and Flory Morales and a animal rescue center, tries to put a stop to the culprits. Will she succeed?
What I enjoyed about this book was that the author, Diane Haynes, tried to use a teenager as an activist against a influential business. Haynes decided that a teenager is just as able to do an important role just like anyone else.
What I dislike about the book was that there were two contrasting plots within the story. In one chapter, Jane is trying to stop the oil company and be a helpful person, then in the next chapter, Jane is talking about boys and which is the cutest. I felt like the author should’ve been on topic with the plot.
I would recommend this book to people who are interested in stories about others aiding people or animals in need.
In conclusion, I believe this book is somewhat interesting to certain people, and can be found dull to others, like myself. There are aspects of this book that people can find likable and/or dislikable.
The book is about a teenage girl called Jane Ray saving a seabird from the oil spill in Burrad Inlet. Suddenly getting caught on camera face to face with the culprit, Seaking Shipping Pacific. With many seabirds caught in the oil spill, Jane volunteer with the Urban Wildlife Rescue Center and began a campaign urging Seaking to take responsibility for the oil spill, but Seaking is keeping a close eye on her. Will SeaKing resort to drastic measures to keep her quiet? or will Jane fight instead of running. Find out for yourself.
I like Jane as a character in the book because I like how courages she is. Like the part when she jump into the Inlet trying to save a seabird without any reason at all. Even after that she wants SeaKing to take responsibility for their action.
I hate SeaKing for not admitting to their crime because in even in real life I hate people that don't take responsibility for their action.
I learned how to make my own animal rescue kit.
I would recommend this book to people that cares about the nature because the trigger to the conflict was when the oil spill happened.
Flight or fight is about Jane, a girl that lives in Vancouver BC. While she was running one day she saw a duck that was stuck in oil spill. Once she brings to the animal shelter she lives near, they told her it was this company that did, when Jane tries confronting them they, of course, say they didn’t do it. I found this book interesting because it takes the “yes no” argument and turns into a two hundred page book, with some extra in between, but that’s the whole idea of the book it’s just jane, Jake and others saying the company did it and the company said they didn’t do it. If I had to give this book to someone I think I would give it to an earth activist.
In My Opinion This Book Was not as exciting as i thought it would be in the beginning The Reason Why is that the beginning of the book wasn't that exciting until you reach the middle or End of the book where the best parts happen
I loved this book, it is factual without detracting from the story and the end leaves you feeling so inspired and uplifted. An easy read, this book will definitely be one of my go-to pick-me-ups.
