Opposite Day

Rate this book
Davis has it all: the wealth, the connections, the job, the car—and the cheating ex. His long weekend with his lover ruined, tired of his life and the way it always goes wrong, Davis just wants to go home and enjoy a stiff drink.

All that changes, however, when a moment of carelessness results in a chance meeting. Brody is everything that Davis is not supposed to want, so far from his tightly regulated world that spending even thirty seconds with him would be a foolish waste of time. Any other day of the week, Davis wouldn’t waste his time.

But every other day hasn’t worked out so great, and Davis decides that for just one day, maybe he should try something different…

I’m an ordinary working woman with aspirations to be a writer. Am slowly but surely getting there My tastes obviously lean toward men doing naughty things to other men, and while I occasionally stray into the fantastical, generally I stick to the here and now. Nothing terribly remarkable about me: I like pop (soda), storms, and gleefully mashing the keyboard until a story comes out.

Davis has just found his second boyfriend cheating on him, this time with his secretary, of all the biggest cliches. Coming from a family of obsessive social-climbers, he’s accepted to fill the two uses his family has for him: a business asset and a fashionably gay son. He is finally at the end of his tether with his unfulfilling and, frankly boring, job as CFO of a firm with lots and lots of names, and the kinds of boyfriends that come along with that social and business position are tedious, as once again another has fallen to the allure of “sucking other cocks.” Adding to his distress, Davis finds himself cursing the rainy weather for being melodramatic and being splashed by a car.

The man who emerges to apologize is opposite from him in every way. Sinfully sexy and covered in tattoos, Brody is genuine and an honest ray of sunshine, and the difference between sweet and talented bad boy and boring and depressed Suit has Davis declaring the day Opposite Day when Brody offers to take him for a beer to pay for smearing him with the roadside puddle. Opposite Day means that Davis can sleep with anyone he wants to. It means he can say what he wants and complain about his family. It means that he can be as uninhibited as he wants and not have to worry about what happens when Opposite Day is over.

This was a cute story and though Davis isn’t an easy character to come to like, he isn’t a difficult one either. Brody, however, is a delight, and through his influence Davis starts to open up and show what he’s really like under all of his family’s repression. His sullen meekness becomes fire and gumption and his boredom with life becomes passion.

I could see in the connection with these two characters that they could have had a much longer story that kept me interested (I usually really like the Opposites Attract theme), but the small amount of external conflict served to set the story’s length without overloading the plot and focusing more of the story on the sexual connection Brody and Davis foster, which while short in length, was satisfyingly steamy.

I would have liked to read more of the story though the story and it’s length is fine as it is. Though I wanted to know more about Davis’ family (and certainly more about Brody’s life, since we see everything through Davis’ POV), there is so much story there that the story would have to have been much longer without taking the focus away from the relationship. Still, this was a satisfying and cute story — and quite enjoyable to read. B-

This was a good little short story about two total opposites. One CFO wearing a suit and one tattooist wearing tattoos. It was cute and a little bit hot. I just wish it would have been longer because I'm not sure I'm convinced that the relationship between these two will last very long.

An adorable short story about a very bad day at the end of which Davis elects to take a chance and things starting looking up.

Davis gets more character development than Brody but the dynamic between them is kind and fun.

A nice little quick read.

A really cute story about a guy whose always played by his family's rules, doing the job they expect, dating the guys they expect, who is having an awful day after finding his BF cheating. When he's splashed at the bus stop by a driver, he makes some decisions that turn it into opposite day, as the guy who splashed him and stops is a tattoo artist and so not his type, but what the heck. A weekend of dealing with this uptight status conscious family and reexamining his life, lead him to make some drastic changes in his life, including following up on his his relationship with the "Mr. Wrong". I would have loved to see them dealing with Davis' family when he tells them he's changing his life. I think Brody would have been a strong ally for him, so there was definitely room for more, but it was a cute story and I liked both men a great deal and was pleased to see David stand up for what HE wants for a change.

Davis Wheaton is having the bad day of all bad days. His live-in boyfriend has cheated on him (not the first boyfriend to do so), his job and family are strangling him in expectations and demands, and it is pouring outside. Unbelievably, his day gets worse. Standing at the bus stop, a passing car hits the puddle in front of him and he’s drenched.

Enter Brody Simons, hot, handsome, and the driver of the car that just soaked him. Brody is the opposite of every man Davis has ever dated and not the type of man his family would find acceptable. When Brody offers Davis a ride home to make up for the soaking, a range of choices appear before him. There is the safe, normal path…refuse the ride and go on as usual. Or take a chance and do the opposite of what he has always done. What will Davis choose?

This is a delight of a book. Winning characters, great dialog, and realistic scenes combine to present a picture of a life on hold until an unexpected opportunity offers him the chance to make a change. Davis charmed me right from the beginning. Erica Kealey makes it so easy to empathize with him. Davis’ frustrations are our frustrations. The tone is just right for someone feeling boxed in but stymied in his attempts to move forward. Brody is another great character, sympathetic, easy going and willing to take a chance on rejection from a “suit”. Brody has layers to him and that pulls in the reader and Davis at the same time.

All of this happens in 11,000 words. Opposite Day is a book small in size but not in heart. By the end of the book, I wanted to buy a “Opposite Day” t-shirt or make Opposite Day a national holiday. Trust me…it would do us all good. So does reading this book. You’ll love it.

2.75 stars. Predictable but enjoyable. I would have loved if this was a full-length, slow burn.

Our story begins with Davis standing outside, having just caught his boyfriend Roger cheating on him. Roger wasn’t the first boyfriend to cheat on Davis, but actually brought his ex to the apartment he shared with Davis to have his fun. Davis has had it, and as he standing outside contemplating going to the city apartment he didn’t give up when he moved in with Roger, he is splashed by a passing vehicle. This is just it! He is surprised, however, when the driver of the vehicle, actually stops, apologizes and offers to drive Davis home.

Davis has the most obnoxious social climbing family, and he is expected to perform like a trained dog and do exactly what they expect him to. By choosing to go with Brody, have a drink, maybe sleep with him, he is choosing something different. Opposite day, he is choosing something different than the norm. No family accepted, socially conscious boring men who know what fork to use. Today, Davis is choosing someone different, someone tattooed who follows his own beat, not that of his family.

The story is smooth, and watching Davis awaken is very nice. Just the fact that his mother turns up her nose at his Lexus as “not good enough” shows how little his mother is really interested in her son. He is a symbol, a gay son they can flaunt as a sign of how progressive they are, provided he is in a stable relationship with the man of their choosing and approval. Seeing him begin to break away from this was a breath of fresh air.

This book was simply too short to get a higher ranking. There was a lot of potential for conflicts but they were left open. You could have made more of this story because Davis and Brody where interesting characters. But they stayed kind of shallow because there was not enough room for development. Everything was very fast and sudden.
I think a few more pages would have been good for the story but I guess it was supposed to be a short, so it's okay. I still liked it.

Nice little story, a bit heavy on the smut, but which still bothered with a bit of context and plot. Maybe if it were longer the characters would have had more of a chance to win me over, but they seemed a bit simplistic. Let's just say it didn't feel squee inducing :)
I should probably give it 3 stars, but I think I'll stick with the Goodreads definition of 2 stars = it was ok.

What a fun little story this is! There have been many times in my life I wished I could have turned into 'Opposite Day', but Davis' day turned out perfect. Such a cute little story, and I'd love to hear more about Davis and Brody and what happens after.

If it was longer I would have given it 4⭐️, but the story in General was really cute and sweet. I liked it, this is a new author for me and I hope she thinks of a sequel for this story. I think Davis and Brody need another novella, just so we can see what they've been up too.

Opposite Day is a delightful short story about a guy trying to break free from his oppressing life. Low on the angst yet not too fluffy, this is a very lovely story and I would recommend it to everyone.

For the 25 pages (approx) this book was just okey, but the cover are unique and incredibly cool, I loved it! Also, This book was different, it wasn't a typical romance, more of a HFN than an HEA .
